Sabre - feel like you’d have a lot of fun with its electronics…plus, you can always get another SG anywhere

The Sabre is an active guitar - if you use the controls the way you would on a passive guitar, it sounds awfull. First tip: NEVER turn the volume, bass and treble pots to 10 - never. The switches are a bright switch and a phase switch.

sabre I and sabre, refers tho the neck radius, no the order of production. The Music Man Sabre was an electric guitar manufactured by Music Man from 1978[2] until 1980.[3] It came in two versions, the I and the II, that were identical other than the necks. The neck on the I had a 12” fretboard radius and standard size frets, while the II had a 7.5” fretboard radius and smaller, vintage style frets. the you are correct, the red switch is phased, not series/parallel . it is the first guitar than leo and george made, after their agreement with CBS was up. -JC from Fullerton/ proud owner of the sabre II i bought in fullerton. great show . thanks

The SG sounds great, but also sounds like just another 1 million guitars out there. The MM... if you just stop fidling with the knobs... what amazing distinctive tones it can provide.

I love everything about that SG! its got the binding and trapezoids plus a Kahler for extra metal factor! not to mention that oddball violin burst. definitely an SG no one else has, and with a case that seems like a great price. Also that MusicMan is very reminiscent of the G&L F100! love the weird onboard preamp stuff, just enough to make a superstrat a little weirder

You have to turn down the tone to get a normal sounding guitar on vintage Music Mans. otherwise they turn kinda weird. Once you get used to it they are a good funk machines.

That SG is pretty sweet. I tried a Sabre that my buddy had from the same era and it didn’t really click with me either. It felt kind of like a 70’s strat with humbuckers but didn’t have the visual coolness that I like about 70’s CBS strats

  • @PhilLament

G&L recently reissued the Sabre, right...along with a Sterling version? Also, the two tone knobs on G&Ls are usually passive treble and bass rolloffs, similar to Reverend guitars.

The SG has a locking nut. You have to tune it with the fine tuners on the tailpiece, not the tuning gears.

I'd choose the Sabre over a humbucker SG any day (although the humbuckers on that particular one did sound better than average). Also, I think we are long overdue for a "rule" (like the "no Stairway to Heaven" rule that's been around for decades) about "No AC/DC just because you picked up a frigging SG!", lol. Also "No Beatles or Tom Petty just because you picked up a Rickenbacker!", haha

I didn't get my hands on them, but I REALLY liked the sonic options of that Sabre....I also must confess my order of coil splitting guitar fell through with the "shortage" we are currently experiencing. I am in dire want of a guitar with a neat varied sonic palette. (Affordable - I am in a budget crunch).

  • @thejeffersonlee

The black switch is a phase switch, the white is a bright switch. Active treble and bass tone controls. I would go for the SG, even with the Kahler.

    the Gibson
a nice guitar but not too precious to mod if you need, the kahler is actually a pretty useable trem mainly because it doesn't affect the tuning with your hand palm muting, you can put a regular bridge and stoptail on it if you want they'll just be a hole under it. personally I dig the late 70s/80s SGs because they're a lil thicker with a slight bit more weight and different neck/body joint more solid. the music man is good guitar but might as well get a strat if you're looking for that style guitar plus it's just that wonky 70s look not uncool enough to be cool. plus out of these two even with all the tone options the SG just sounds so much better.
