  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was one of the five releases we gave a 10/10 in 2023. It showcased a potential that stems from a deeply intimate familiarity with a game engine that can only come from having an experienced development team, capable of pushing an aged console at the end of its life cycle to its absolute limits, and producing magic.

TOTK is hands down game of the year or even game of the decade. Its amazing how easily the western media is overcome by "hype." You simply cannot say Baldurs Gate 3 is a more stunningly developed game than TOTK, no matter how hyped the title is or how much you enjoyed it. There is no technical wizardry on display in BG3. There's nothing in that game that makes me say "how did they do that?"

Bruh to say there is no wizardy in display at BG3 is just...an oversimplification. The systems in that game are so well designed and work in such a way that you can have limitless possibilities from a storytelling/gameplay standpoint that's hard to topple. People are saying it's the best rendition of an actual DnD game ever, and it's pretty hard to do that in a video game, which is constrained by what the devs designed the game around. It doesn't have an impressive physics engine like ToTK but BG3 innovated in ways we have hardly seen before

    • @Skinnypete38

Im not gonna argue what game should 've been goty but prior to launch, BG3 had no hype compared to TOTK. The only people who we're hyped for BG3 was CRPG fans. Even before it's release everybody thought TOTK was the sure goty. BG3 was just so good and unique in the mainstream area of games that some media outlets thought it took TOTK's chances of goty. Im just saying if hype was the category for goty then TOTK should of still won.

Don't really get this 10/10. I mean yeah, the mechanics are great, but still, there isn't much more to it. The depths are basically mostly empty and only offer a few interesting locations. Even the sky islands seemed awesome at first, but turned out to be very repetitive and not so many

I certainly wouldn't complain about having crisper graphics, but I honestly don't care about it or even think about it when playing TotK or just about any other Nintendo game. What makes the games great has virtually nothing to do with how realistic/sharp they look. Nintendo deeply understands the fundamental ideas behind what makes gameplay rewarding, and the rewards have very little to do with high frame rates and resolution.

This is called elegant design. It's when a single mechanic or system can be utilized for several different purposes in the game. In the case of TOTK, this assembling system can do pretty much anything you can think of. As a game dev myself, I imagine that one of the goals for this game was to have this all-encompassing mechanic that could serve more as a toy for the player's imagination, something like Will Wright envisioned for SimCity or Spore back in the day.
While a lot of triple A games rely more on graphics than on design and novelty, it's great to see that some big devs are continuously bringing new blood and ideas to the table.

No other title has such an accurate, and predictable physics system, that just works as intended, with so few glitches to be found! TOTK is a an absolute triumph of iterative game design! Hopefully they can take what they've learned here and apply it to their next game, while focusing a bit more on story continuity and consistent game progression, to deliver the ultimate Zelda game! The future is looking bright for the series!

This is one game that desperately needs another shot on the Switch 2 with modern visuals. Its no doubt the best game I played in years, but I'll never forget going from the RE4 remake on the PS5 to this and experiencing the jarring framerate dips, pop-ins and shadow shimmering on that tutorial island right in the beginning, it gave a horrible first impression. Thankfully after you land on Hyrule after 2 hours the game's visuals look and run noticably better and look fine overall.

Its really not that bad, but yeah running on an emulator with everything the best it can be natively looks amazing. Fun fact zelda botw and totk is pretty modern and technical engine wise, using the same rendering techniques as most other modern open world games. The game isnt even cellshaded only characters have a cell shader applied to them. And the game even has volumetric lighting and other cool fancy effects just used at a lower resolution for the poor switch 😂

Though the former is easy to justify since on a 720p switch screen you probably wouldn't notice them at all. Meanwhile i was playing on a 34" monitor.

No one has time and money like Nintendo to pull this off without taking a massive gamble. Microsoft possibly with their unlimited money but the fact that they don't care about making money off their own IPs unless they buy them after they're cash cows just shows they don't have the talent or patience to create something like this.
Nintendo took years to make BOTW and continuing with TOTK means over 10 years of development has cumulatively gone into TOTK.
It's a joke that yes it's a DLC for BOTW but they're completely different experiences.
