I received one of these in the plastic kit/box as a kid in the late 70’s! 40 plus years later. I still have it and have purchased many more! I have some for spare parts. Some for Extra kits. I take one with me every camping/fishing trip. I use it more than any of my other 5-6 spinning rods and bait casters! I love ultra-lite fishing! Caught some relatively big fish on my Minicast 2’s! I have #4 test on one reel and I keep a spare in a pouch with #6 test for when I want to catch larger fish. Great little kits! I just with they made the reels with bearings instead of bushings. Glad you were able to rekindle your love for these little kits! Got one for my girlfriend who loves to fish. She’d never heard or seen anything like it. She’s older than me and has been fishing probably as long as I have! She absolutely loves hers that I got for her for Christmas a couple of years ago! I got the kit and cleaned and restored it to almost new! 😃👍❤️
Back in the mid 80s. These little guys were the king of the trout streams. I remember seeing them at the lodge at Montauk trout park in southern Missouri. Back then, the ones made in Japan, were like 75 dollars with the rod. I always wanted one. 75 dollars was a lot of money back when I was 14 years old. To be honest with you. They are still expensive on eBay. Recently I finally found a vintage, new old stock, still in the package, made in Japan Diawa mini spin cast. It is a 4 piece rod and is the exact same style reel you have here. Needless to say I paid a small fortune to get it. 225 dollars to be exact. I loaded it with good old original Stren 4 pound test monofilament. I headed off to a creek near where I live. It was terrible. I spent as much time untangling line from the drag adjusting tip as I did fishing. So I took it home. Removed the line from the reel and reloaded it with 4 pound test braided spiderwire line. I was hoping that since braided line is a bit more stiff than monofilament line that it would not tangle up as bad. Well to make a long story short. It worked well with the spiderwire. However I have noticed that after about 4 short fishing trips the white nylon spool is starting to wear on its edges from the braided line. I’m going to keep using it until it won’t work anymore. I will admit though. I am very disappointed in it. It is a very smooth rod and reel. It is well designed and built. It is a pleasure to fish with. I just don’t see it lasting very long with the braided line on it. I could switch back to monofilament. Then I would have to put up with the tangles that go with it. It’s a shame to because my 35 dollar zebco micro 33 gold setup works great. It is really a nifty little setup. It’s just fun to tangle with a good sized bluegill with an ultralight setup. My cheap zebco ultralight setup works much better than the Diawa and I’ve had it for 3 years and never had to do a thing with it. It just works.
@@TroyGlaus-yv2yb 🤠Hey there! Sounds like we’ve had some of the same issues and history with these reels. The silver series, with the drag knob in the center of the cap were notorious for tangles.. The larger models were famous for the pickup pins not “picking up” lol. But I did figure out in one of my very recent videos (Andy visits Thousand Trails Campground) that filing the pickup pin and using 6lb line on the micro kept the line from tangling up around the drag button and snagging during a cast… then I gave the entire combo to Andy 😂. I was just happy to figure it out but I never wanted to see it again.. Thanks for watching and commenting!! I’m glad I haven’t been the only one on the planet to have those issues but try 6lb line and I may stop part of your problem with it.. I’m still looking for the greatest micro Spincast..
I don't have a Minicast 2 reel but the original Minicast reel got me re-started in fishing in my early 20's -I was gifted that outfit when leaving a summer job at a Paper Mill in Northern Ontario. I used it for small trout until I lost a section of the 4-piece rod in a river, moved it to a 4'-6" Quantum ultra-light casting rod and searched out another complete kit (for nostalgia's sake). The earlier Minicast has the drag mounted in the body, acting on a larger drag washer working on a cast aluminum spool - more metal than plastic parts and no front adjusting knob to get in the way. To be honest, it is on the verge of being a little too small for adult male hands but it works well. I actually landed an 18 inch rainbow on the little ultralight rod/reel but, full disclosure, at some point in the fight it collected weed on the line and across the fish's eyes so I think he was wondering why the lights went out as much as what was pulling him...😀🤣😀
Hey there!! I struggled with several versions of this little Daiwa as a child then decided that the Mitchell 308 was more in my price range, easier to take apart, and more dependable.. Had I known how versatile the old Johnson Century 100B was as a kid, I would’ve stuck with it. Daiwa and I have never been all that close until recently with the Revros and Regal.. great spinning reels.. I tried the larger Daiwa spin cast reels but they had trouble catching the line on the pickup pin unless there was tension on the line which caused me to miss quite a few hook sets.. Later I found the Abu Matic 170 and fell in love😂. The Gold series Daiwas from Japan weren’t too bad but I’ve never been fortunate enough to come across one of those either in good enough shape to fix or priced low enough to buy.. Maybe one day.. I actually ended up getting that reel to work quite well and gave the combo to a friend of mine who’s a Daiwa guy.. he’s used it several times and caught a lot of panfish with it..
I sold two of those Minicast reels last year. One had the drag knob that protruded out the front, the other had a drag adjustment on top of the frame. When I tested them I found that four pound line sometimes hung up on the drag knob that protruded out the front. The other reel had no issues and casted very smoothly with four pound line. Both reels sold very fast on eBay because they were in such good condition. The reel with the protruding drag adustement sold for $7. The one with the drag adjustment on top of the frame sold for $27.
I remember the issues and now that you’ve verified them, I’m afraid they’ll all come flooding back😄might try 6lb on it just to see if that’ll take the issue away, hopefully it’ll be different.. if not, then maybe whoever watches this video will learn a little something. Are you going to be doing a fishing video with it next?
Eventually.. just need some warmer weather.. got a lot of them to fish with this spring and summer..
@@TheGraytOutdoors Okay. Yeah me too. Thanks to some guy on UA-cam.
@@luigiprovencher Can’t believe those UA-camrs 😂… just a bunch of used car salesman. 🤣🤣
@@TheGraytOutdoors Yeah I know right? Lol
How’s it compare size wise to the Proficiency tiny?
I thought it was pronounced “Day Wa”?
Hey there!
The Profishency is definitely smaller and judging by the size of the foot, it only fits that Profishency rod..
That’s the world we live in, things just keep being built smaller..
I’m not sure if that’s how you pronounce Daiwa, but I definitely like your way better.. 😃
