Yes. But i like the way they introduced the new chracters in season 2 and 3, so that the audience can be prepared to love (or hate) them, the same as Alfred. For example, Aethelfled or Edward. And Finnan, of course, ha!
I really do not understand, why this show is so underrated. Society is sick. it is a masterpiece. Excellent work, outstanding actors and very interesting story and period of time. Saxon Britain after rule of Romans, vikings raids - king Alfred the Great that saved his country and his legacy lives on...
@@wyrrd Yes, Aethelhelm poisoned the water they were drinking being held captive and Aelswith drank most of it. Edward gave her permission to take care of Aethelstan in Bedwyn. Well since she became sick Edward looked at Uhtred and said you need to take care of him and teach him the ways of the Danes and of Northumbria. Uhtred takes Aethelstan with him
David Dawson's acting is so good he makes me cry every time I see the second last episode.. Awsome acting... And yet such an underrated actor.. Deserves Oscar.
It was beautiful to finally see Alfred give Uhtred the recognition he deserved. I cried in that scene, Alfred's words were so powerful. He waited for Uhtred to go back to him so he could say all he had kept to himself for years, and he could not die until he did so. I really love The Last Kingdom, the cast is full of amazing actors - especially David Dawson.
I loved this portrayal of Alfred. He was such a FRUSTRATING character at times because I could never get a read on him. He was so unpredictable. He made things so difficult for people who were close to him and loyal to him at times. His wife, children, advisors, Uhtred, everybody. When you thought he'd actually reward someone, he'd turn and threaten them with death, banishment, etc. He clearly loved Uhtred, but put him in impossible situations, constantly . A lot of it was due to social and political reasons. This was not a tolerant age and he couldn't be too openly friendly towards Uhtred or the Vikings, as he needed the support of the clergy and alliances with other monarchs to succeed with his own ambitions...but he was also very courageous, clever, resourceful, and honorable. Such a strong character
Super late comment I know, but I always thought Uhtred and Alfred were essentially 2 sides of the same coin, so different from each other, and yet so similar. Also without one you couldn't have the other and they show that they both understand that at the end of S3 and it shows even more in the books if you've read them.
@@andrewstewart5933 the two sides of the same coin reminded me of Merlin and Arthur of BBC. Another show I love. It was more of a family show of course.
That stuff cut deep this season. Especially Alfred's very human response to his nephew despite Aethelwold being a turd, admitted he didn't want to kill his brother's son. But yeah the whole scene with Alfred acknowledging all Uhtred had done for Alfred was huge. I had a lump in my throat the whole time
Uhtred basically ensured that Alfred remained king and untouched for as long as he lived, took care of his son twice, and now he's taking care of his grandson. His loyalty is deep.
There were times when I despised Alfred at times. He did everything in his power to ensure Uhtred would stay at his side and protect his family. Him giving Uhtred the acknowledgment he deserved before he died meant so much to Uhtred even though no one was around but them to hear it. Uthred speech to the people when Edward accepts that he is a free man brought tears to my eyes.
You're right. Just interested. Why do we still keep on calling the period between the withdrawal of the Romans and the Norman Invasion the "Dark Ages". What did the Normans do that the Anglo-Saxons didn't - especially in regard to scholarship and government??
I liked it the first time I watched it, but I started reading the books between S2 and S3, so by the time I rewatched I had finished all of them and I realized how much the show started deviating from the books starting in S3 such as major character deaths such as Ragnar and Thyra both of whom die of old age in the books, the other thing is the fact that they take so long to get Aethelflaed and Uhtred together in the books they get together at the end of Burning Land which should of been the end of th e 1st half of S3 yet they don't get together till S4 which honestly ruins the perception of their relationship because in the show it essentially comes off as jus some quick fling instead of what it was in the books which was the longest relationship Uhtred ever had (they were together for around 30 yrs in the books) and she was probably the most important women in his life the only one who even compares is Gisela. My bad for the rant lol I love the show it was prob my favorite show before I read the books and still is one of my favorite, but there is this underlying tinge of annoyance now with how far it deviates from the books especially S4&5 where literally the only thing that is the same is the general plot

For all his faults, King Alfred was a true man of God, honour, and selflessness. Despite my knowledge of his inevitable death, I still couldn’t prepare myself for when that moment came. Hey, at least I didn’t cry as much as I thought I would.
the strongest, the purerist and the most heartbreaking relationship between king Alfred and uhtreat strikes like lightening in the whole show. This bond they have goes beyond anything, even fate itself.

Great video. One of the best scenes imo is when Alfred tells edward to make a decision. At first, I was like what the hell Alfred, then after he said that, I was like OHHHHH
If you have the mind of a leader, you will come to understand why Alfred made these choices that may seem, impossible and disliked by many. But it is because he has too bear the burden of making a choice on his shoulders because nobody else can in order to build his kingdom. If you have the mind of perseverance, you can understand why Uhtred goes through so many battles and doesn't find peace in what he has. He is the only one that can protect the people he loves because no one else can fight for his dreams. If you you both of their minds, you will come to understand the pain of sacrifice they both had to endure in order to SURVIVE in this harsh world because there is no room in it for weakness. And through their bond could Alfred and Uhtred gone as far as they did. If Alfred was weak and favored Uhtred his kingdom would fall, causing him to act harshly on Uhtred. If Uhtred was weak he would lose everyone and everything in his life that he cared about, having to fight his kin in order to protect the people that he loved. This bond was the thing that kept them alive and to learn how to survive. They may have very different beliefs and values. But the bond and respect that they shared for each other was immense. An unbreakable bond.
This is so Powerful their relationship was so complicated and such an important part of the series which is really shown in this edit, this is amazing! 💓

I like it. The music, however, is too loud. Hard to hear what's being said.
Amazing but the music is too loud compared to the dialogue
Yes I know, sorry about that, sadly I can't change it anymore. I added subtitles though, so you will be able to know what they say.
