- Steven Drozd (guitar and synthesizer master for the Flaming Lips) is teaching a few college seminar classes about how to be a rock star. NPR's David Greene wants to be a drummer. So he asked Steven Drozd for a quick lesson.
@Tracebebo Yup. He was the drummer.
Hey wasn't Steven with Janis Eighteen also not just the lips? cuz i think Wayne said something about that
you spelled his name wrong in the video
Of the things that should censored….
Some bad advice here. He tells the guy to not try to be funky and instead, "play 1-2-3-4" which, when the guy does as instructed, is a terrible beat.
He's not hitting it in time. I don't think David thinks he's the next Tony Williams or anything. Steven's advice is sound. Really, he's telling him to work on solidifying rudiments first before practicing modern, syncopated styles. He has a natural groove but it's not very honed. Playing with a click will help
it doesnt matter how funky or fancy someone thinks they are if they have no concept of time
What?!?!?! Of course he can't play the straight beat properly... CAUSE HE CANT PLAY! probably why the funk thing shouldn't be top priority.
