All good except for the freezing part. Labs store bacteria for study in freezers. They don’t die in the freezers, nor will they die in yours. I think the scrubbing and alcohol application has a much greater impact. If you just stuck your shoes in the freezer, the bacteria would wake up when the shoes are warm again and you would be right where you started.

Ew! Well the shoe was still pretty stinky after the alcohol the freezer really seemed help a lot. Its prob something you just need to stay ahead of before the smell gets out of hand/foot.

Labs suspend bacteria in cryoprotectants such as glycerol if we want them to be alive after freezing. If we'd like them to be dead, a standard protocol to rupture cells is to put them under multiple freeze-thaw cycles. While the alcohol and scrubbing probably did most of the work, I'd guess the freezer may have contributed too, with more freeze thaw cycles improving things.

A lot of bacteria do die in temps below freezing. Only a few bacteria live through freezing temps so this is only partially true. Freezing will kill a ton of bacteria.

When I use to put my shoes in my backpack after climbing they stunk. Started attaching them to the outside of the pack with a carabiner so they air out each time and haven’t noticed any stank. So definitely would give it a shot.

The only thing that has worked for me is Friendly Foot shoe spray. It will not remove existing odor but if you start with a new pair of shoes and spray after every session there will never be any smell (except for the smell of the spray).

Backing soda once a week, even after daily use, does the trick ( pH too high for bacteria?)

I use small usb fans to dry the shoes after training for couple of hours and then place SmellWell packs in them. Works really well to prevent the smell from developing in the first place.

Soak in dishwashing liquid, scrub with brush, thoroughly rinse, soak in vinegar + water. Air dry next to fan.

I fixed the problem by NEVER putting them in a backpack/bag after training. You forget them ONCE inside and you are doomed, but since I’ve started hanging them always they don’t smell no more!

It should be noted that freezing only slows down bacteria growth. Therefore, bacteria in cold temperatures will not be able to function, but if they are brought back to room temperature, they will start to multiply. So you want a “one two punch” kill them off then preventing the growth. Stay ahead of the curve and keep the shoes clean that will keep your shoes fresh.

The freezer is a great idea. I'd go easy with the isopropyl, though. You never know which parts of the shoe might be really sensitive to that. Frankly, I just put mine in the washing machine on cold or lukewarm and never hat an issue with that.

Don't they lose some of their rigidity or something simmilar? Also I heard that putting tea packets over night can remove the smell. These two seem like the best options right now but I'm still a bit "scared" of washing them.

    • @TheS4ndm4n
      @TheS4ndm4n Рік тому

@@maringuic2484 Why would they lose any rigidity? If you don't use some kind of aggressive detergent it's basically just water and some warmth. If they stand up to foot sweat and climbing in the sun, they'll take a wash as well.

I fixed my foot odor long term (2+ years) with a course of OTC athletes foot powder (tolnaftate, miconazole, among others). Use it daily until the smell stops, then for a few weeks after. I haven't had it come back.

I swear by the Peet shoe dryer. It was $50 on Amazon and I leave it running 24/7. I put my sweaty climbing shoes on it and they dry overnight -- no more smell! I wasted my time with a bunch of other things before getting the recommendation from a skier, of all people.
It works wonders on my surf booties and running shoes.

@@BetaClimbersI also use this method^^ but with the Dr. Prepare shoe dryer (it's more portable). It works extremely well and it doesn't get hot enough to melt the glue on the shoes. Also, when it comes to scrubbing the inside, a light detergent with a soft bristled bottle brush works quite well.

Stinky shoes? First thing is to wash those stinking dogs of yours! Putting already sweary and dirty feet in climbing shoes is just going to transfer your stinking athletes foot into the shoe. Clean your feet!
I like to fill the sink with soapy water and put the shoes in and squish them around. After they are clean use a boot dryer! I really like the peet boot dryer.
