Mainly want shoes that fit right, then there shouldn't be sock slipping (socks) or sweat slipping and blisters (no socks). Also if one wears socks, you want the thin socks (can also be no-show ones that you can't see), or you can even go super thin with nylon, and then the distance from the wall really just isn't a factor (unless you're just that elite). There's a lot of reasons why people do it.
Then with "they're designed like that", that doesn't mean that it's therefore the best way in general, and of course not for every individual. There's still pros and cons, like smell and also ease of getting the shoe on and off, less sweaty feet, etc. The primary way they're designed for no socks is to get the foot as close to the wall as possible, and very thin socks just don't go against that design.

i just dislike being barefoot in shoes, it always feels cagey. that said, i'm new to climbing and on my first session i did that exact faux pas of wearing socks because i didn't know. i then took them off since everyone else was sockless. i kind of got accustomed to the feeling, but had to take the shoes off frequently in between attempts because they felt super swampy. i was actually surprised how much my feet sweated in those climbing shoes, since the upper was mostly knitted. i think i sweat less while skateboarding in full leather high top skateshoes. i might purchase a pair of climbing socks just to feel out if i like it. i can definitely see how being barefoot can give you an edge. it's similar to skating where some people prefer very thin shoes and socks(or no socks at all)for more boardfeel. the construction of climbing shoes also reminds me a bit of vulcanized skateshoes and they kind of feel like if you buy a pair of vans authentics half a size too small and took out the insole.
Give the thin ankle socks a try. Sweaty feet isn't good either.
Me and a friend have come up with a name for when your shoe farts when you jump down from a boulder, its Squeef..... 🤣

With sweaty feet, I always have to wear socks. Even when I down size my climbing shoes 3 sizes down climbing 5.12, I still wear socks.

@@climberdad Nothing specific to climbing. Meanwhile merino wool socks (thin or thick) work really well for sweaty feet.
I do as well. A thin sock in proper fitting shoes doesn't slip around. Below the ankle thin socks work the best
I wear socks with my climbing shoes all the time, and climbed up to V11 with them.
I don't want to try Mainland, because I have no stinky shoes. 😁

I wear very thin socks for comfort. I can feel the stitches in my shoe tug on my skin, especially on the heel. I feel like i can stand taller more comfortably on my tip toes when my heel is allowed to slide a couple mm. Where without socks my foot is forced in a shorter more inflexible position because of the friction.
Obviously don't want any deadspace in your shoe to slide around in, but being comfortable at all lengths of the shoe is important. I had a similar issue with my shoe being downsized too far, so my foot was forced so flat and i couldn't stand on my tip toes at all or smear.

Thanks. I've been hearing that a lot recently. I think something has happened internally to my cameras mic input. When I'm editing I still have sound through both channels but the left is a little more quite.

There’s no way I could fit socks in my shoes due to the fact I have to wear mole skin, that’s being said i disinfect after every session and deep clean them after every four😂
