      @Niko Nelson Yes. Simply a matter of being old (now), young (then) and being in the right place at the right time. Hard to believe it's been 40+ years.

    This and "Very Early" are my two favorite Evan's tunes. He really moved the whole genre into more interesting and sophisticated places; I'm glad there are these kinds of records of his greatness.

    After all of the stuff that he went thru in his life, including his heroin addiction, it is amazing that he could sound so beautiful and so strong. He was damaged but he left a monumental legacy and many great tunes. He was one of the best.

    I performed this song for judges at a College, as a performance major. I trained with Wes Belcamp of Five Towns College in LI NY. Very difficult song to play. It took weeks( or months) to learn, but I did it. I got a high grade for the performance.

    Whenever I watch him or listen to him I think, "if only we hadn't lost him so young." I saw him live in Evanston, Illinois probably around 1975, not sure what album he was releasing at the time. Still one of the 5 most influential jazz pianists in my lifetime.

    Thank you, Bill Evans for playing the piano with such brilliance! Your music is a solace and a source of joy!

    It's like you are just watching this genius make piano playing effortless, and it's not! And it sounds like there are at least two other pianists involved. Incredible!
    And don't say anything bad about him. He really set the bar high for anyone else to match up with him. He was an artist and we have no right to speak

      It's not really about how complicated it sounds...it's about his total dominance over the instrument and over jazz itslef.

    yeah, I noticed that for sure. Depending on the song I really do like the frantic feeling. though. One of his recordings of "Bill's Hit Tune" off the final village vanguard sessions is absolutely out of this world. Of course, it totally sounded like he was high off his mind while playing.

    I couldn't agree more with your critique. He only reflects that slow lugubrious depressing aspect of the music and its title at the very end--but, brilliantly of course.

    • @positivegrenola
      @positivegrenola 5 років тому +1

      callingeuterpe have you even heard half of his music? Bill was known for being on the rushing side than dragging so to say ‘he only reflects that slow lugubrious depressing aspect of the music’ is sheerly wrong. As for his language when soloing it’s heavily bebop influenced mainly, which no one has ever associated with being depressing. He can reflect melancholy brilliantly but can cover the whole spectrum of moods as any good artist can, people just like to generalise him to one end like you have

    He was addicted to cocaine during the latter part of his life. I do agree he played more frantically and also think his tone suffered somewhat.
