This is the absolute masterpiece. Those notes can heal and physically affect. It feels like you went through many difficulties through decades, maybe lost everything, got beaten and broken but finally reached peace. And you are ready for the next chapter of your life. You are the new person. It is very gentle but there is much more in those pauses. It is melancholic but positive and peaceful at the same time.

I remember really hearing this late one night almost 40 years ago. I was returning from Yellow Springs, OH to Xenia, OH along a stretch of road that was nearly deserted. I watched as the headlights cut a path of light through the enveloping darkness and then suddenly, I heard it. I played it again and I wept. Two times, three times and then I lost count. But I was overwhelmed with unutterable joy to hear this spare, lone voice with its ringing insinuation of atonality. I was and I am even now torn down and lifted up all at once. I hear Flamenco Sketches too but I also hear Some Other Time.

When my two-year-old son first heard this, he abandoned his beloved cars, sat on the couch silent for 6 minutes and 45 seconds with his mouth gaped open. I know of a woman who has had her parental rights terminated for her US born son. Residing permanently out of the country, she wanted him to come to the USA to attend school and the state nabbed him. She hasn't seen or hugged him in nearly two years, his birthday just a couple of weeks away. Perhaps it's something related somehow to your bereavement, and may come up in your dissertation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It helps me deal with this. Playing piano definitely aids with my coping, as well as eating well, exercise. The pain from these emotional upheavals unravels any hope for a normal day of enjoying life. How can one do this when the ones that they love aren't "allowed" to? How I wish I'd had kids. I missed a great experience in this life. But geesh, this world and what's coming....
I am in tears. When Peace Piece plays on my playlist, there's a natural stop in whatever I am doing. I am utterly present. To learn this piece was improvised leaves me gutted. What was he thinking about? Was he thinking at all? The result is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Bill said in interviews that jazz is so beautiful because it's something you cannot describe that just flows through you, otherworldly, when you are improvising. He mentions that it's a mixture of knowing how to play the instrument, but then just letting it flow through him. Awesome.

Allowing them to feel personally and organically connected to the music... Peace is an ever-present constant, no matter what else is happening. It is steadily there and it seems Bill is exploring and demonstrating no matter if you stretch things this way or that the peace is constantly present is we just notice it.

I had such a profound reaction to this song. I know many in the comment section may not be religious but idk just listening to it I truly feel more peace that I felt before, and I praise God for that. Even though he has been gone for a while his music lives on. His talents were used for good. I used to listen to this a lot, trying to get deeper with the music, sometimes i meditate before listen so that the music can hit me harder, it never fail. To me this music is so sad and yet so beautiful, it makes me want to be alone, slow down my breathing and just feel things all around me. But i stop listening to this because as the experience went deeper I was feeling very depressed as I realized could never find something similar to this experience in a real life unless i change myself which i don't have the courage to do so. It is true that beauty only reveals itself to the brave. If this music has inspired you, may you have the courage to become what it inspire you to be.

According to at least one account I have read, this was supposed to be a take/version of the Leonard Bernstein classic "Some Other Time", which also ended up on the Everybody Likes Bill Evans album. However, as Bill was playing the intro to what became this timeless improvisation, he realized quickly where it was "going" and waved off his bassist and drummer so he could focus on what quickly developed into one of the most beautiful and unique piano solos not only of Bill's career but in the history of recordings (and I do stress unique, because Bill never again attempted anything like this either in the studio or live). And yes, this probably was the template for Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue jazz piece "Flaminco Sketches".
I can't help but think that the point of the song is to tell the story of finding peace in life. Often the path to peace is filled with ludicrous pain, anxiety, and upheaval. It never occurs naturally - rather, it's progressive and often times more so regressive in its systematic subjective choreography. The off-key notes exemplify the hurdles and pain faced by the listener in their passionate pursuit of peace as every moment is broken down emotionally, piece... by piece.
Or he maybe he was improvised this as music independent from language and thought and then in retrospect titled it "Peace Piece" simply because of a "peaceful" vibe he found about it.
I agree with your thought. You might also consider that the path to peace might not be linear, so the off-key/out of synch notes might be symbolic of finding peace wherever one looks and in whatever one sees: the pieces of the puzzle whether they seem to fit or not. Painful or not, its all a piece of beautiful life

I was riding a city bus in San Antonio one afternoon. Sitting in the front, where the seats face each other. Three people across from me were talking about how at a certain time of the day, in certain seasons, the east-west streets in Manhattan light up gloriously as the sun (directly west) drops down in the sky. I thought this a celestial moment: three poetic souls talking about beauty, not about how Texas is the greatest place in the whole world.

I am about to perform this in Chicago, at my first recital in 57 years. I have worked on this piece and will never consider it truly mastered. I will continue to work on it long after this performance. It is inside me.

When my two-year-old son first heard this, he abandoned his beloved cars, sat on the couch silent for 6 minutes and 45 seconds with his mouth gaped open.
This is so beautiful the first time I heard it, it felt almost disrespectful to do anything else but sit and listen. Touches the very soul of a person, absolutely stunning.
Nice comment! I think very young children has an intuitive feeling for great music, long before they can express it in words. But then when they grow older this intuition somewhat disappears, other things will take more place.

Years ago, I played this piece at the funeral of the son of friends. I am also a bereaved parent. Currently writing my dissertation on the marriages/relationships of bereaved parent couples, I find myself turning to this piece again and again for company. Thank you for having posted it on youtube for all to share. So deep.

I know of a woman who has had her parental rights terminated for her US born son. Residing permanently out of the country, she wanted him to come to the USA to attend school and the state nabbed him. She hasn't seen or hugged him in nearly two years, his birthday just a couple of weeks away. Perhaps it's something related somehow to your bereavement, and may come up in your dissertation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It helps me deal with this. Playing piano definitely aids with my coping, as well as eating well, exercise. The pain from these emotional upheavals unravels any hope for a normal day of enjoying life. How can one do this when the ones that they love aren't "allowed" to? How I wish I'd had kids. I missed a great experience in this life. But geesh, this world and what's coming....

I am in tears. When Peace Piece plays on my playlist, there's a natural stop in whatever I am doing. I am utterly present. To learn this piece was improvised leaves me gutted. What was he thinking about? Was he thinking at all? The result is nothing short of a masterpiece.

Wow I did not know this was improvised. Bill Evans unfortunately had a lot of sadness in his life and it is portrayed through the sounds of his music.

Bill said in interviews that jazz is so beautiful because it's something you cannot describe that just flows through you, otherworldly, when you are improvising. He mentions that it's a mixture of knowing how to play the instrument, but then just letting it flow through him. Awesome.

I’ve got a couple of kids and they aren't into jazz. But one day I played Bill Evans for them, and they were like, 'Jesus, that's pretty good.' So I think it's great that young people are just discovering Bill Evans, and I want young people to discover Bill Evans. I think he's a great artist, and I think more people should listen to him and respect the beauty that he was able to create.

This was the first song I ever heard of Bill Evans. The definition of class. He leaves just enough space between the music to allow the listeners thoughts and memories to be their own... Allowing them to feel personally and organically connected to the music... While bringing it back so perfectly to keep the listener engaged mentally without getting lost in their own emotions or overbearing avant-garde nonsense

This song always makes me smile and brings a tear to my eye, all at the same time. No matter what I am doing, I have to stop and pay attention to the music. It does something to me, something good. I love jazz and I love Bill Evans but this, this is something else I cannot define. I don't want this song played during my funeral, I would like to listen to it when the moment of my exit of this world comes. Pure beauty.
I’ve listened to plenty of pieces but I’d have to say this has to be one of the most beautiful songs in existence. Bill is speaking to us through his piano which I feel portrays sadness paired with the feeling that everything will be alright. My mind has been extremely busy lately, and very few pieces can quiet my mind like this does. Absolutely brilliant. May Will rest in piece knowing that this song has blessed millions of people.
The atonal section in the middle is so breathtakingly brilliant, and the slow resolution back to tonality is just gorgeous.

I've heard this song before but the other day i was in the kitchen cooking and this song came on... And i stopped in my tracks... The utter beauty of the song is remarkable but the feelings that came over me where mind blowing. Sheer joy and great saddness overcame my senses all at the same time!!! Through those 6 minutes i relived all the highest highs and lowest lows of my life and was completely grateful to the Universe for all the experiences that is my life!!! I guess you can say i made Peace with ALL the Pieces... Thank you Mr. Bill Evans for capturing all of that in just this one song!!!

I had such a profound reaction to this song. I know many in the comment section may not be religious but idk just listening to it I truly feel more peace that I felt before, and I praise God for that. Even though he has been gone for a while his music lives on. His talents were used for good. He uplifted the voices of Civil Rights activists like Billy Holliday and even today his music has such a profound effect. I did not expect to react with such emotion to this song. Powerful stuff. I used to listen to this a lot, trying to get deeper with the music, sometimes i meditate before listen so that the music can hit me harder, it never fail. To me this music is so sad and yet so beautiful, it makes me want to be alone, slow down my breathing and just feel things all around me. But i stop listening to this because as the experience went deeper I was feeling very depressed as I realized could never find something similar to this experience in a real life unless i change myself which i don't have the courage to do so. It is true that beauty only reveals itself to the brave. If this music has inspired you, may you have the courage to become what it inspire you to be.

According to at least one account I have read, this was supposed to be a take/version of the Leonard Bernstein classic "Some Other Time", which also ended up on the Everybody Likes Bill Evans album. However, as Bill was playing the intro to what became this timeless improvisation, he realized quickly where it was "going" and waved off his bassist and drummer so he could focus on what quickly developed into one of the most beautiful and unique piano solos not only of Bill's career but in the history of recordings (and I do stress unique, because Bill never again attempted anything like this either in the studio or live). And yes, this probably was the template for Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue jazz piece "Flaminco Sketches".

I can't help but think that the point of the song is to tell the story of finding peace in life. Often the path to peace is filled with ludicrous pain, anxiety, and upheaval. It never occurs naturally - rather, it's progressive and often times more so regressive in its systematic subjective choreography. The off-key notes exemplify the hurdles and pain faced by the listener in their passionate pursuit of peace as every moment is broken down emotionally, piece... by piece.
Or he maybe he was improvised this as music independent from language and thought and then in retrospect titled it "Peace Piece" simply because of a "peaceful" vibe he found about it.

You might also consider that the path to peace might not be linear, so the off-key/out of synch notes might be symbolic of finding peace wherever one looks and in whatever one sees: the pieces of the puzzle whether they seem to fit or not. Painful or not, its all a piece of beautiful life
Heard this on Scala radio yesterday. I hadn't heard of Bill Evans before but now I have. I love all kinds of music but this knocked my soul sideways when I heard it. It is what makes music so very special. You may be long dead but bless you Bill.

I was riding a city bus in San Antonio one afternoon. Sitting in the front, where the seats face each other. Three people across from me were talking about how at a certain time of the day, in certain seasons, the east-west streets in Manhattan light up gloriously as the sun (directly west) drops down in the sky. I thought this a celestial moment: three poetic souls talking about beauty, not about how Texas is the greatest place in the whole world.
