The story behind this is Bill walked into the studio, played this on the first take, got up and left. Why mess with perfection? Ever time I hear this tears roll down my cheeks. It's just that beautiful.
I concur. I can't stop them from wheeling up in my eyes and just rolling on down my cheeks. I do this every time I hear a masterpiece, which isn't very often these days. This is certainly a piece of heaven. Thank thank God for Bill Evans and Claude Debussy and the Queen, Joni Mitchell.
The consistency of the left hand, even through the discordant chaos of the right hand reminds me to be my self, even when outside forces try to draw me in other directions. Stay true to yourself. Be that consistent left hand.
You will go where you have to go. You will see what needs to be seen. And you will hear things occasionally that make you feel glad to be alive and wonder at the beauty of being a human. This is one of those moments that vibrates through all the walls of time. Share the way this makes you feel with the ones you love. May every word you use be like a note that's played as in this song.
I will never forget the moment when I crossed the Manhattan Bridge for the first time to the sound of music by Bill Evans. I saw the skyscrappers surrounded by large, gray, sheep-like clouds, letting orange rays of summer twilight filter through. This is how I define the music of Bill Evans. A masterpiece, yes a masterpiece.
This piece of music actually defines the word 'transcendental' for me. Mellow. Nostalgic. Lyrical. Emotive. Melancholy. Optimistic. It really is something quite special. As others have said, it's about the space between the phrasing, those harmonics. To know Bill Evans' music is a privilege, and a joy.

This is the absolute masterpiece. Those notes can heal and physically affect. It feels like you went through many difficulties through decades, maybe lost everything, got beaten and broken but finally reached peace. And you are ready for the next chapter of your life. You are the new person. It is very gentle but there is much more in those pauses. It is melancholic but positive and peaceful at the same time.
@@darrynlamonteastrologyI fully agree. There were some small minded critics who claimed Bill was an inferior jazz pianist because he supposedly couldn’t play blues. Let the critics carp. The most beautiful things in life don't overwhelm you, they're not obnoxious, they don't ask for attention. This song is truly beautiful; it gently rolls with the ebb and flow of life. I feel more and more in tune with life as it plays.

I remember really hearing this late one night almost 40 years ago. I was returning from Yellow Springs, OH to Xenia, OH along a stretch of road that was nearly deserted. I watched as the headlights cut a path of light through the enveloping darkness and then suddenly, I heard it. I played it again and I wept. Two times, three times and then I lost count. But I was overwhelmed with unutterable joy to hear this spare, lone voice with its ringing insinuation of atonality. I was and I am even now torn down and lifted up all at once. I hear Flamenco Sketches too but I also hear Some Other Time.

I am about to perform this in Chicago, at my first recital in 57 years. I have worked on this piece and will never consider it truly mastered. I will continue to work on it long after this performance. It is inside me.
When my two-year-old son first heard this, he abandoned his beloved cars, sat on the couch silent for 6 minutes and 45 seconds with his mouth gaped open. This is so beautiful the first time I heard it, it felt almost disrespectful to do anything else but sit and listen. Touches the very soul of a person, absolutely stunning.
Nice comment! I think very young children has an intuitive feeling for great music, long before they can express it in words. But then when they grow older this intuition somewhat disappears, other things will take more place.
Years ago, I played this piece at the funeral of the son of friends. I am also a bereaved parent. Currently writing my dissertation on the marriages/relationships of bereaved parent couples, I find myself turning to this piece again and again for company. Thank you for having posted it on youtube for all to share. So deep.
I know of a woman who has had her parental rights terminated for her US born son. Residing permanently out of the country, she wanted him to come to the USA to attend school and the state nabbed him. She hasn't seen or hugged him in nearly two years, his birthday just a couple of weeks away. Perhaps it's something related somehow to your bereavement, and may come up in your dissertation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It helps me deal with this. Playing piano definitely aids with my coping, as well as eating well, exercise. The pain from these emotional upheavals unravels any hope for a normal day of enjoying life. How can one do this when the ones that they love aren't "allowed" to? How I wish I'd had kids. I missed a great experience in this life. But geesh, this world and what's coming....
I am in tears. When Peace Piece plays on my playlist, there's a natural stop in whatever I am doing. I am utterly present. To learn this piece was improvised leaves me gutted. What was he thinking about? Was he thinking at all? The result is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Bill said in interviews that jazz is so beautiful because it's something you cannot describe that just flows through you, otherworldly, when you are improvising. He mentions that it's a mixture of knowing how to play the instrument, but then just letting it flow through him. Awesome.
Ogni giorno, ogni istante penso a mio padre. Ci ha lasciati un anno fa, ma non riesco a piangere perché mi sussurra spesso le sue battute ironiche e irriverenti. Purtroppo ha sofferto tanto e avrei voluto farmi carico di un po' di quella sofferenza.
I've commented on this before but, this is just THE most stunning, wonderful piece of piano playing you will EVER let your ears listen to. Sheer perfection.
I am an old rocker from the 80’s. I know nothing about Jazz and for some reason saw this and decided to listen. This is awesome, pure genius. It’s time for me to dig deeper into his catalog.
It was Bill's sense of space that attracted Miles- the perfect pianist for Kind Of Blue. They have many similarities, especially when you listen to them solo.
I’ve got a couple of kids and they aren't into jazz. But one day I played Bill Evans for them, and they were like, 'Jesus, that's pretty good.' So I think it's great that young people are just discovering Bill Evans, and I want young people to discover Bill Evans. I think he's a great artist, and I think more people should listen to him and respect the beauty that he was able to create.
I once asked everyone I know:” If you could be in front of the whole humanity, all 7 billion, and language and focus wouldn’t been an issue, what would you say to the whole of humanity to reassure that the next day we would achieve peace? Some said they would cry, some would tell a joke, one of my favourite responses was to sing a beatles song, but now I am absolutely sure...this song, this wonderful expression of peace, this is the answer to my question.
Found this piece at the beginning of the pandemic. An unexpected gift. I would close my eyes and listen. Made it all go away if even for a few minutes. Makes me cry now when I listen. 😢
This was the first song I ever heard of Bill Evans. The definition of class. He leaves just enough space between the music to allow the listeners thoughts and memories to be their own... Allowing them to feel personally and organically connected to the music... While bringing it back so perfectly to keep the listener engaged mentally without getting lost in their own emotions or overbearing avant-garde nonsense
I came across Bill Evans in a music documentary yesterday and I can't believe I've only just heard of him. So glad though. This is just transcendental! Thank you so much W R for making this available.
Since art is infinite we can't come across all of it at an early age. I'm glad you came across this. Isn't it fantastic when you think you've heard or seen it all and find out that not only is there still a great deal to see and hear, but that what is left to see and hear is spectacular?
@@douglashott9843 Absolutely Douglas. I keep discovering the new from the old and am always delighted by the feeling that a switch in my mind has been flipped on!
I also just ran onto Bill Evans yesterday. I also agree with the other comment by Doug that it is cool that you can still keep running onto new and different things and they are spectacular.
Bill Evans
This song always makes me smile and brings a tear to my eye, all at the same time. No matter what I am doing, I have to stop and pay attention to the music. It does something to me, something good. I love jazz and I love Bill Evans but this, this is something else I cannot define. I don't want this song played during my funeral, I would like to listen to it when the moment of my exit of this world comes. Pure beauty.
I’ve listened to plenty of pieces but I’d have to say this has to be one of the most beautiful songs in existence. Bill is speaking to us through his piano which I feel portrays sadness paired with the feeling that everything will be alright. My mind has been extremely busy lately, and very few pieces can quiet my mind like this does. Absolutely brilliant. May Will rest in piece knowing that this song has blessed millions of people.
I've heard this song before but the other day i was in the kitchen cooking and this song came on... And i stopped in my tracks... The utter beauty of the song is remarkable but the feelings that came over me where mind blowing. Sheer joy and great saddness overcame my senses all at the same time!!! Through those 6 minutes i relived all the highest highs and lowest lows of my life and was completely grateful to the Universe for all the experiences that is my life!!! I guess you can say i made Peace with ALL the Pieces... Thank you Mr. Bill Evans for capturing all of that in just this one song!!!
the future is bright, remain positive and adaptable to change. Good things are ahead for many this year, many that deserve it, people like me, you and your friends. best wishes to David T and Chris G in Victoria Australia and their family-friends..
I am a blues/roots guitarist/vocalist. If you are any kind of a musician, how can you not listen to this after a gig, as I am tonight. It unites us all.
Peace is an ever-present constant, no matter what else is happening. It is steadily there and it seems Bill is exploring and demonstrating no matter if you stretch things this way or that the peace is constantly present is we just notice it.
One of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. Stunning in it's ability to evoke feelings and memories in my life despite hearing this "piece" for the first time. I've been playing it on a loop for the past 1/2 hour. The hook is in.
I had such a profound reaction to this song. I know many in the comment section may not be religious but idk just listening to it I truly feel more peace that I felt before, and I praise God for that. Even though he has been gone for a while his music lives on. His talents were used for good. He uplifted the voices of Civil Rights activists like Billy Holliday and even today his music has such a profound effect. I did not expect to react with such emotion to this song. Powerful stuff. Praise God.
Peace is the beginning and the end. Pure meaning. Pure silence. Let’s leave the storm behind. Few drops are still falling, here, there. Slowly. Thank you.
I used to listen to this a lot, trying to get deeper with the music, sometimes i meditate before listen so that the music can hit me harder, it never fail. To me this music is so sad and yet so beautiful, it makes me want to be alone, slow down my breathing and just feel things all around me. But i stop listening to this because as the experience went deeper I was feeling very depressed as I realized could never find something similar to this experience in a real life unless i change myself which i don't have the courage to do so. It is true that beauty only reveals itself to the brave. If this music has inspired you, may you have the courage to become what it inspire you to be.
I heard this for the first time while listening to BBC 6 radio in the bath. Never has a song excreted so many tears from my eyes in an instant. Peace be with the world
According to at least one account I have read, this was supposed to be a take/version of the Leonard Bernstein classic "Some Other Time", which also ended up on the Everybody Likes Bill Evans album. However, as Bill was playing the intro to what became this timeless improvisation, he realized quickly where it was "going" and waved off his bassist and drummer so he could focus on what quickly developed into one of the most beautiful and unique piano solos not only of Bill's career but in the history of recordings (and I do stress unique, because Bill never again attempted anything like this either in the studio or live). And yes, this probably was the template for Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue jazz piece "Flaminco Sketches".
I can't help but think that the point of the song is to tell the story of finding peace in life. Often the path to peace is filled with ludicrous pain, anxiety, and upheaval. It never occurs naturally - rather, it's progressive and often times more so regressive in its systematic subjective choreography. The off-key notes exemplify the hurdles and pain faced by the listener in their passionate pursuit of peace as every moment is broken down emotionally, piece... by piece.
Or he maybe he was improvised this as music independent from language and thought and then in retrospect titled it "Peace Piece" simply because of a "peaceful" vibe he found about it.
I agree with your thought. You might also consider that the path to peace might not be linear, so the off-key/out of synch notes might be symbolic of finding peace wherever one looks and in whatever one sees: the pieces of the puzzle whether they seem to fit or not. Painful or not, its all a piece of beautiful life
Heard this on Scala radio yesterday. I hadn't heard of Bill Evans before but now I have. I love all kinds of music but this knocked my soul sideways when I heard it. It is what makes music so very special. You may be long dead but bless you Bill.
Bill Evans, one of those rarest of rare beings. Who brought from the heavens the sound of stars, the touch of eternity. As has no other. Surely, you have returned to those stars, William John Evans. Where even God weeps, as do we, for the beauty of your creation.
Whoever gave a thumbs down to this has no soul.♥️🙏. This is breathtaking...exquisite playing and a timeless composition. An intellectual man who gave his heart through a wonderful talent. This music will never die. I know he had his troubles but man he gave everything he had. Thank you Bill Evans. R.I.P Bill Evans.x
I was riding a city bus in San Antonio one afternoon. Sitting in the front, where the seats face each other. Three people across from me were talking about how at a certain time of the day, in certain seasons, the east-west streets in Manhattan light up gloriously as the sun (directly west) drops down in the sky. I thought this a celestial moment: three poetic souls talking about beauty, not about how Texas is the greatest place in the whole world.
This isn't sad or boring. It's beautiful, interesting, and haunting. From another world. Thank you so much for exposing me to this ineffable . . . piece.

Wow I did not know this was improvised. Bill Evans unfortunately had a lot of sadness in his life and it is portrayed through the sounds of his music.
when I first heard I had just parked..was sitting when it came on WBGO I felt the smooth, soft yet intense..bought me to tears..love it
Bill said in interviews that jazz is so beautiful because it's something you cannot describe that just flows through you, otherworldly, when you are improvising. He mentions that it's a mixture of knowing how to play the instrument, but then just letting it flow through him. Awesome.
"I am utterly present". Beautifully said, I completely agree.

Mucho Gracias...
I am an old rocker from the 80’s. I know nothing about Jazz and for some reason saw this and decided to listen. This is awesome, pure genius. It’s time for me to dig deeper into his catalog.
Inside this bubble of sound I am safe. Just me and Bill. Thanks man!
It was Bill's sense of space that attracted Miles- the perfect pianist for Kind Of Blue. They have many similarities, especially when you listen to them solo.
Kind of Bill
Yeah, now I want to go to the record store for some Miles.
The most touching thing ever heard. His music has its own soul. We are all blessed to feel it and to see through it.
❤
My ex wife said to me this was the most depressing piece!
That's why she is my ex.
This piece is living and breathing. Sounds like love!
🤣👍😁😊🤍
Idiot
🤣 isn't that the way it seems?
smart move
It's not depressing, it's deliciously melancholic. That's quite a difference.
A piece so beautiful it can disassemble you and put you all back together at the same time.
人生最期に聴きたい曲です。後半の不協和音を含めて、和音が本当に美しい。
One of the prettiest piano pieces one could ever hear. Snowing, wood stove going and the beauty of Bill Evans piano !
Out of this world....this is someone who really knew love, loss and pain and deep beauty.
I'm here after finding out John Mayer listens to Bill Evans all the time, and man am I glad I'm here.
The atonal section in the middle is so breathtakingly brilliant, and the slow resolution back to tonality is just gorgeous.
That's why jazz is so beautiful, knowing the rules and then breaking them
Boski fortepian, ktokolwiek potrafi wydobyć takie dzwięki zasługuje na uwagę , niesamowity melanż...słucham z przyjemnością.

I feel the same way when I listen to this piece. I just stop whatever I am doing and just experience it. A masterpiece indeed.
3.5 million views! That gives me faith in humanity! We’re going to be just fine. It’ll just take a little while.
This gives me a little piece of peace
agree very ! "human circus" was in DIRE NEED to be slowed down .. Peace
the future is bright, remain positive and adaptable to change. Good things are ahead for many this year, many that deserve it, people like me, you and your friends. best wishes to David T and Chris G in Victoria Australia and their family-friends..
Haha
Well, actually it are only 3500 people who came to listen 1000 times to the same peace piece... So, sorry for that faith in humanity....
Such a beautiful piece. It is no mystery why he was MIles Davis' (a genius of space in his own right) favorite Pianist.
So smooth, like smoking in the late night, when no one's is around.
4:07 - 4:14 is so beautiful, the way he resolves the dissonant notes with that gorgeous chord is really just immaculate
That's the best Pianist in such tranquil and beautiful world. Peace and neat ...that I enjoy the most.
That's a wonderful way of putting it. Thank you.
One of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. Stunning in it's ability to evoke feelings and memories in my life despite hearing this "piece" for the first time. I've been playing it on a loop for the past 1/2 hour. The hook is in.
SO TRUE.....
Check out Erick Satie...you’re in for a treat.
This feels more like a brotherhood and sisterhood than a comment section.
Estaba durmiendo cuando oí esto y me desperté llorando.. . Tuve la suerte de que en la radio dieron a conocer en ese momento el título de composición
Praise God.
there is nothing in the world like this piece: the notes, the silence itself echoing on, the feeling it brings out. what a piece
I’m glad I randomly went here and heard this. It’s nice
Even frivolity can lead to beauty every now and then !
Gives me chills every time. I hear his soul speaking in this song -- the longing, the beauty, the poignancy of his life.
This beautiful piece never gets old. So simple… yet so complicated. What a genius!
Peace is the beginning and the end. Pure meaning. Pure silence. Let’s leave the storm behind. Few drops are still falling, here, there. Slowly. Thank you.
My go-to song when I need to calm my brain. Thank you, Bill Evans. Excuse my platitude, but what a gift music can be. Pure aural Valium.
Euphoria! That ending was tragic. Also Bill Evans is the goat
You can do it
If u feel it , Its in u :)
His notes, phrases move like a gentle gust of wind, a soft breeze that lingers. The silence between.
I heard this for the first time while listening to BBC 6 radio in the bath. Never has a song excreted so many tears from my eyes in an instant. Peace be with the world
Peace for everyone who listens to this music
Interesting and illuminating!
same song not template
Steve Neill llllp
Steve Heil; I couldn't agree with your more brother!
Wow Steve Neill...was thinking about something similar while listening to this beautiful piece...
What a truly outstanding piece of music.
Bill Evans, one of those rarest of rare beings. Who brought from the heavens the sound of stars, the touch of eternity. As has no other. Surely, you have returned to those stars, William John Evans. Where even God weeps, as do we, for the beauty of your creation.
in a class all his own
This songs takes me to places in my imagination that I never want to leave, what a powerful yet beautiful song. Forever one of my favourites
It does indeed echo peace.
One of the greatest jazzmusicians ever!
This isn't sad or boring. It's beautiful, interesting, and haunting. From another world. Thank you so much for exposing me to this ineffable . . . piece.
C"est tellement magnifique.. merci euphoria
Words escape me...this has to be one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.
Being improvised, this is music straight from his heart. Captivating.
...when the boundaries between classical music and jazz are infinitesimal...great music
Holy shit this is incredible, it feels like the left and right halves of his mind are both completely at ease at the same time on the keyboard
Same here....first time I heard this, I knew I was listening to something special and rare. I have invested time searching through all his work, duets, etc...that was 20 yrs. ago and this song still captivates me~K
it has to be the most relaxing collection of musical notes I've ever heard, if not then i dont know what else could be.
One day I was just sitting on my bed. I was brainstorming ideas for a story I wanted to write and decided to put on some music to work to. I asked the Alexa in the room to turn on some jazz music considering it's among my favorite genres. This was the first song that came on. I couldn't even work properly when I first heard it. I just sat there. Listening to this song. Music really is something special.
I really feel peace in this piece of music!!
What a beautiful thing a man can do by playing the piano. Fresh air and welling springs are all there.
