I'm half Japanese and these songs, especially the ones for holidays, were a integral part of my early childhood.

Same here. I grew up in Yokosuka Navy Base, but before hand lived off-base in native Japan and spent my early childhood and went to school there. I will forever cherish these songs in my heart.

Hinamatsuri (Doll’s Festival) is an event to pray for young girls’ growth and happiness. Many families with girls display a set of Hina Dolls to celebrate the day. These dolls depict the ancient imperial court, and a full set includes: the Emperor, the Empress, three court ladies, five court musicians, the minister of the left, the minister of the right, and three servants. They are displayed on a tiered stand along with miniatures of some furniture, household goods, and ancient vehicles. On this day, we often eat traditional food like sushi, clam soup, white sake and sweet rice crackers (the ones in the square box in the last picture of this video).

I love this song ... I accidentally heard this from a Doraemon's episode. Initially, I'm completely fascinated by the melody of the song ... so ghostly but so traditional, it's really hard to explain the feeling after listening the song ... just like other Japanese songs, the melodies always attract me somehow and really good to know this is a traditional song.

I’m Japanese. I understand why you think this song ghostly, but I’m pretty sure this song is rather cheerful for people back then. I’m young and have grown up among western musics so I have a similar impression as yours, but my grandma would think this song is meant to celebrate and wouldn’t think it scary at all. I think this song is an example of Japanese standard of beauty. For centuries, Japanese people loved this kind of musics and found beauties in them.

Yeb, musical tastes are changing depend on generations, I think we (young folks) have been pinned to the head with ghostly music by creepy movies. It creates a new definition of scary rhymes which is compared with a happy one. I feel this song sounds scary because Ive never experienced a doll festival so I can't really how beautiful it is and this is not about no respect for tradition but just if you really put yourself in my case with a imagination of a person who sitting in a slide-door room, candle with white-skinned dolls and scary rhymes play along. Its really freaked out!

@@LongNguyen-ik5rx Nah, horror movies have nothing to do with it. I don't watch horror movies because they don't interest me, and yet I think songs like this have a hauntingly beautiful, eerie quality to them. There must absolutely be a reason for it, but I'm not well versed in music theory so I don't know. Maybe the melodies in these old songs have a kind of structure that causes our brains to feel something's 'off'. At times they're almost dissonant, but at the same time they're not. Maybe that's part of the reason.
