"Dinosaurs are not just cool, they are MEGA COOL, and sculpting them are SUPER MEGA COOL" - thus, this man single-handedly convinced me to sculpt in Blender
@@robrobusa Yeah, it's way better. A lot more in depth, higher quality, more practical and useful content per video. I've just got my fingers crossed he doesn't disappear when the patreon money rolls in.
I love the accuracy and the heart behind this! The viewer really feels your enthusiasm for paleontology! I'm also really in paleontology, I started with Blender a while ago and feel like I'm now ready to sculpt some dinosaurs! Thanks for the great video!
Hey, Fellow paleo nerd here I'm super into Paleontology but very new to Blender took one class on it Last year, and I'm feeling like this video is a little advanced for me considering I haven't done any sculpting in Blender do you have any tips you could give me?
That is crazy, I was thinking of dinosaurs and UA-cam recommended this to me! Also your video was freaking awesome to watch, clear and straight to the point. It was so fun watching you work on the Rex in Blender and listening how you explained the processed. I've learned a few things from your video, especially for a game asset which is much needed and appreciated. ^-^ Thank you so much for making this video. Keep it up! ♥
I am so bad i am weeks in with my t-rex, though its my first time going through all of that stuff. - Now i've had a couple of days of texturing painting and boy did i make some errors, but i learned how and why i made them. But your's is so very beautiful, i am not comparing, Your efficiency and joy is wat i seek to get out of the program. ^^ gg's
I've always been wondering, is it possible that if you sculpt a dinosaur with clay that you're able to take a picture of it and somehow transport it into blender where you can edit it and all that, is it possible to do that or is that with a different program ?
Hi! A bit late but maybe it still helps you. You can use apps like Polycam to take multiple pictures of it from various angles, and then use it in blender. I think it'll be a lot easier if you have an iPhone with LiDAR, but it's not necessary. Good luck!
The retopology trick was awesome. However, couldn't you subdivide the original sculpt, sculpt the details on it, and use it to bake normals onto the retopo texture instead of doing the multires thingy?
Your method is different from what I seen before. You put in blocks and so on. Do you have a comparison VS shaping from a plane, then extruding etc? What is better for you? Or you always did it like in the video?
Hey, I'm new to your channel Super big paleo nerd, but I'm relatively new to Blender and am not as advanced as most of the people watching this video, that said would the full unedited video of your sculpting the T rex be useful for a newbie like me to just follow along and copy each step combined with these video's?
This is very helpful! I need to ask though, if I wanted to make a dog for some animations, would I have to sculpt the mouth open on the model to be able to animate it to open and close?
Personally I would sculpt the mouth open, makes it a lot easier to rig and animate after the fact, but if you sculpt it closed, then you just have to make sure to make an inside of the mouth so there is room to move the mouth. But again Iw ould just sculpt it open, should be easier, but I would only make it half open, so that it is not super deformed when you have to close it again, good luck!
I made the mesh for topology, but how did you turn it into the one shown at 4:04? How did it become so smooth and the name changed to retopo, did you just named it that or did you apply something that made the name change? I can't find any info on what to do further
"Dinosaurs are sadly no longer with us" *stares at the roughly 9700+ species of avian theropod still alive today* .....lol just pulling your leg, nice sculpt.
I'm wondering, why not use the sculpted version for rigging as the retopologized version's geometry is equally as dense as the sculpted version? The level of geometry and detail is the same right? Great sculpt by the way, genuinely impressed!
Because for rigging and animation you need proper edge flows to control how your mesh deforms, and in actuality the rigged model is using the lowest subdivisions, more like 20-40.000 faces this way the rig stays performant. If you were to use the sculpted mesh the rig wouldnt be as perfomant both in terms of how heavy it is to deform many vertices and the actual quality of the deformation. So while you are creation the pose or animation the model is low dubdivs but then using the multires modifier you can set it to upres during rendeirng only. This is the standard practice in the industry for film, for games it is a different story :) Hope this answers the question and thanks!
@@CriticalGiants Thanks for the explanation! Is there a proper explanation on the actual use of the multires modifier? I always thought of it as a kind of subdivision modifier. Seems like there's more to it
@@CriticalGiants hello how many poly does the optimised low poly retopo mesh have? I'm just wondering how many polys is ok for a game in ue5 because my low poly tyrannotitan has 32k polys
I'm a blender modeler and animator too. And like you, dinosaurs are among the things I model and animate in blender. Do you like all of my blender animation I made so far in my channel?
Hello. How you union model before sculpt? i from russia and only in 1 guide on my language use addon "bool tool" but he break the model. Can u explain or call name of video where it is?
hi ! interesting video, I want to ask you what about you say this is a Gamereadymodel but i see about more than 2 millon vertices. I think if you want more details you need bake the high poly normal map and then paste in the low poly model. I love dinosaurs thanks you !
if you add a multires modifier to the retopo mesh and up the subdivisions a couple times you can shrink-wrap the retopo to the original sculpt basically "projecting" it
I found your retopo method frustrating, when you use a cube like that it covers up the base mesh making it hard to see what you are doing. I also found extruding for arms and legs hard/impossible. I cant argue with your results but it just didnt work for me. Maybe a separate video on that by itself with more details?
How do you get your sculpt to look good? I don't mean it in the Artistic sense, I mean it in a practical sense When I try to play around with the sculpt, I often gets small bits where everything fucks up and gets tons of clipping issues. I don't understand why this is happening and it's infuriating and I just Rage quit

Same!
I was just thinking about a scene with dinosaurs in it, and your video came just in time!
Great tutorial as always
I Honestly DO NOT know how in the world to thank you. This is EXACTLY what i learned Blender for. Thanks man
I love how this is 5 minutes.
this guy is the new Ian Hubert

Always had trouble with sculpting, your videos have helped me a lot. Thanku
That’s an amazingly accurate model!!!
this makes me so happy, everything you need in a video that isn't a half hour long
Your tutorials are next level! That remesh workflow is mind blowing!
Can’t wait to watch this!
Thinking about adding a random dinosaur in the background of my current post appocalyptic project, thanks for the video :P

Amazing workflow breakdown and nice video structure. Of course some things could change but very informative. Thanks.
You're coming up with such amazing ideas for the community! Thank you!
Thank you, I really liked the series, short and informative!
That was a dope and efficient 5min man thank you so much
Oh yes, KILLING it with the content

It's indeed MEGA COOL!
how would you go about creating the lumpy muscles for secondary forms?
Yes i want to know this too
Imagine that EXCISION want a visual with this guy
This helped a lot with making my allosaurus.
finally, I can make a short film about dinosaurs that do photosynthesis!
Love it! I just wish you had some commentary on the Gumroads.
Looks dope!
Beautiful ❤
If you don't mind I'll be applying this dinosaur tutorial to a dragon, because they're even cooler than dinosaurs. They're giga cool
I would say this is more cinematic than scientific. From what I currently know, most up to date scientific models Trex have a layer of feathers
Actually, Tyrannosaurus wasnt feathered. its hatchlings may have been feathered tho.
it's still debated
Thank you!
2:35 that’s a unique way to use retopology. I mainly use the add on by this could be easier for me.
so cool!
hey
this guy knows the stuff
“dinosaurs arent just cool, they are mega cool!”
"Here, your knowledge in anatomy is really needed to shine"
me: Damn, I gave away my Anatomy textbook from Nursing school.
Where did you find those muscles in the unwrapping section?
You have to add layers to make the sculpts?
Right.
Dinosaurs ARE with us.......... BIRDS!!!😃

hey Critical Giants for some reason I'm having a lot of trouble with the shrink rap modifier while I was making a giganotosaurus so can you help?
Super👍👍👍
Where is that image of the herd of brachiosaurus at 00:14 from? I like it. I saw a similar style on a poster in an issue of National Geographic.
How many polys after the final game ready asset?
Trex was basically a giant chicken and was probably covered in feathers, kinda takes the lustre off of Jurrasic Park movies...
Fathers no evidence

What do I do if I forget to mirror objects before blocking them out? How do I mirror them so that they are on the other side?
wait, how exactly did you "project" the detail of the sculpt to the retopo? i r confused.. :(
if you add a multires modifier to the retopo mesh and up the subdivisions a couple times you can shrink-wrap the retopo to the original sculpt basically "projecting" it
Funnily enough I found this AFTER sculpting a Dimetrodon. (ik its not a dinosaur but close enough)
Do you have a more detailed tutorial to follow maybe? that would be amazing :) this one is too fast but interesting.
But when im attempt to sculpting something i only get failure ugly stuff 😭
