Making A TITANIUM KNIFE - Part 5
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 вер 2024
- Another week of working on this titanium knife. Focusing on making the pommel nut and bushing. Material of choice for this is zirconium, by carefully forging and machining it I successfully make the required parts to hold the handle onto the titanium knife. Its been a long journey on this project and the finish line is near, but there still is a lot of hard work ahead yet. Thank you for watching!

That bad boy is shaping up so beautifully! I'd love to pick your brain at your drawing creative process.
My Brains a scary place to go! Hahaha, Thanks man!
You know what you have golden hands congrats
Then we have saying
It says a job in hands safe from poverty
Thanks very much for a wonderful video! You work with what you've got and I admire your enthusiasm and humor. I an 69 and have two daughters, so I miss sharing engineering stuff. Jesus love.
Indicating off the gaurd and machining to match was genius. 👏
Making anything out of titanium takes some dedication. Promise me you won’t make yourself suffer through giving it a mirror polish.
using the guard to indicate the top of the handle is genius, I bet we see Alec Steele use that in the future.
Tim! I’m digging this knife brother. So much fun to watch how much joy you get out of making things. Makers for life!
I love your videos because you see so many steps in the process. I watch other channels and you just see almost no progress or steps just like one little piece made and no commentary on the process.
Apologies I didn’t finish these vids before.
They’re great tutorials. Thanks bud you are a good Steele and woodworker.
Nice to see the titanium hammer in use
Taking care of that gap between the handle and the guard the way you did was genius man... took a minute to realize what you were doing, my idol for sure!!!
Kyle and you man - two of my favourites. You both should have way more subs. Keep up the great work
Going good Tim ,you say your not a knife maker well your better because you are a blacksmith .
You said you're not a knife maker but look at that craftsmanship! There's a reason titanium knife/sword videos are so rare on UA-cam and so far you're #1 for me. Keep it up!
I love watching forging, the talent on display, the hard work. Plus making a piece of metal look like cheese that you can mould at will, its inspiring. :)
Timothy Dyck and Abed in the morning! Cool. Cool cool cool.
The 20 dislikes are from the people who don't like the good waffling, I don't mind it at all. It just lets us know what you are doing and how nervous you are about making the project as perfect as you can. Awesome job so far, can't wait to see the end product.👍
It's coming out looking fantastic So far !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Top job Tim impressed with all your work 👍⚒🔨🔪
Not sure you guys will see this, but I just want to shout out the editing and filmography in your videos. Martin's use of tilt-shift blows me away. I could watch your machining sequences for hours. It's basically an art haha
Glad to see you experimenting some of with Kyle's techniques. Another UA-camr with an excellent start to finish build and other bits and bobs, Nick Wheeler, also a master smith. Although I'm not sure how frequently he uploads these days, there's a great Bowie build walkthrough, which was one of the first full bladesmithing projects I saw on UA-cam.
I think the fibers of the wood are juste compressed due to vibrations of the drill bit, a drop of water in that too large hole could be enough to make wood fibers expand and return to their initial shape.
Water is a good friend when woodworking.
Thanks for sharing such good videos !!
Hand sanding ...Hand sanding...Hand sanding woohoooo!!!!!!!! Great job ,it looks AWWWWSOME ‼️Im excited to see this finished
he deserves well over 100k subs for all the work he puts in. geez.
Tim, sometimes when i’m watching these videos, I just lose it too! You are one super entertaining guy. Thank you for all your content. I’m enjoying the heck out of it. 😊👍👍
I am a knife maker and this is my exact process! A+ man! Your videos are enjoyable and you offer a good amount of valuable knowledge to your viewers! I think you need a bigger lathe if you plan to make more pommel nuts😂😂
Really coming together nicely Tim
Tim the zombie killer is looking awesome well done.👍🇬🇧🍺🤘
A polished washer over the hole will cover the gap when the pommel nut is screwed on. File in a hollow on the washer on its side while it's on the lathe. It'll make it look like that was the plan all along. Cool build. 😃
You're definitely are not scared to try different things .l love your channel and how you approach challenges.
Project is coming along quite well! Tim owes us a song from earlier, doesn't he?
I'm really having fun and find the weird metals you work with cool
You are one of the UA-camrs who really deserves more subscriber's
This is why I love this channel, showing every mistake when trying something new, feels like I'm learning with ya,nice work Tim!
Bed the tang in the handle with Brownells Accraglass, same stuff used for rifle actions. Wax the tang first for release because you want your takedown feature. It will make the handle more solid and the bedding compound doesn't shrink or creep.
Very relaxing to watch, thank you for the video sir!!
I can't believe that you don't have a million subscribers yet. I mean your videos are fascinating and amusing, what more do people want?
I love watching hot metal move hand hammering on the anvil.
Tim, your videos are a bit longer that what I am used to but the content you create is worth it. Love your style, the music, and the odd materials
That’s looking amazing!
When I saw the diagrams for this build I suspected that it might have been inspired by Kyle Royer, it’s really awesome to see two awesome smiths influencing each other and getting better! This has been an awesome project start to finish
If were'nt for that show stopper chicken you could have finish shaping/shaving the handle and no more part 6...
Looking forward to part 6👍👍👍
❤ from the PH 🇵🇭
Keep up the awesome work, cant wait to see it completed
Turning out amazing.
Worlds most expensive and coolest looking letter opener...
i dont know how i found your channel, but im glad i did. now i cant stop watching
Enjoy your video's and really like your honesty. Thanks for keeping it real.
Amazing job - you are very entertaining. Thanks to Martin too. I would love for you to say what machining machines (which models) you have - and in general some history of the workshop.
This thing is looking so sweet already. Watched all the videos for this knife back to back this evening and this one just came out. Can't wait to see this beauty all polished up. Epic build so far. 🍻
I absolutely love the attention to detail you've put into every aspect of this unique knife build. I especially enjoyed the fine choice of music used while you were making the pommel-nut.
Question: after all the work on the lathe on various exotic metals, do you sweep them all togather and remelt the shavings ?
I believe some people think titanium is a really strong metal but its about the same as steel. Its valuable for being light like aluminum AND strong as steel. I just don't want people getting the wrong idea and potentially getting hurt
YES YES YES!! Been waiting man!! Keep up the great work Tim, love your vids.
For that little gap on the back of the handle, it would have looked nice to enlarge the hole just a bit and then put in a brass plug. You then could have re-drilled out, leaving just a little brass accent around the zirconium insert collar. Same thing at the guard fitment. A really thin brass plate between the guard and the handle wood to give a little accent and visual contrast between pieces.
Ebony is such a great material to use! Made many many knife handles and rings out of it. You can machine it as if it were Delrin!
Does delrin behave like POM-C?
@@Sebastian-ed5kt I'm not sure I've never even heard of POM-C!
@@aidandaly3773 pom - c is easy to machine but relatively hard (if you drill it it can suck the drill in and break a piece of itself)
I really enjoy watching you work, really relaxing, keep it up bro! greetings from Croatia!
A fantastic series thus far, really interesting and entertaining. It’s good that your videos come from a 'real' working shop where you have paying customers for your skills. The whole atmosphere is one of being invited into the world of a true blacksmith. The way you always have your white balance to the warm side enhances this. I also like you challenge your boundaries of what you do with your clientele.
It's good when UA-camrs give shout outs to other good channels and Kyle Royer's blade’s are something special. A master blade smith who has earned his stripes. One of his earliest videos, if not his first, is his journey going through his test to move up from a journeyman to a master.
The only thing wrong is the chicken was a hen, you were right it lays eggs as it’s the female. However, females of any species or genus are addressed in the third person as 'she' not 'he'. Of course I'm being totally facetious with this last paragraph.
The easy way out would to have been to use one or more spacers, but your way is far more elegant. Kyle will be proud!
You're a whoot, Tim!!! Would love to see you become a full-time You-Tuber. I'm super happy the UA-cam algorithm found you and put you in my, " What to watch", feed! 😎
Keep SMASH'N!!! that hammer!
Looking forward to seeing the finished product keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend forge on love the videos keep it up
Superb content & camera work! Kudos
You Sir, have earned my sub.
That's an amazing looking knife! Pretty incredible process you have getting to this point - great work!
Fantastic job. 🌹🌹🌹
Hey man, got to say, love what you do. This build has been crazy with the materials. Power to the discipline to stay the course and make it right. I think some of the other big name smith's out there could learn something from you. Keep it up! Big Mike from California. P.s. I watch all your stuff and would dig a shout out.
Awsome sauce man! Things are shaping up! All the right angles and shapes.
This series is so cool! Thanks dude!
I know nothing about forging, but since the metals you are using are so expensive, is it possible to recover the lathe /saw shavings and melt, reuse? You would probably need to use a different forge capable of a higher temp, but perhaps the cost of this would be offset by the recovery of the metals.
itd certainly be once in a life time experience for me- id never wannna go through all that effort sanding the titanium again lmao
I build furniture and when you have a small gap i usually ta k a bit of saw dust and make a paste with wood glue and use it as a filler for small gaps and even cracks .
Looking good!
Im not gonna lie im pissed i had to watch 5 freaking videos to see the finished product. Only to find out i still have to watch a 6th. This better be worth it!
Looking really good, can’t wait to see that zirconium blackening part, such a cool process. Would be badass to have some watch parts like a bezel and crown in that blackened zirc. Fantastic work as usual man!
I’ve noticed other folks on UA-cam use the talestock of the lathe to center taps for threads.
Instead of hand sanding have you tried ceramic belts to remove the grind marks?
AYYOO THIS MIGHT BE THE EARLIEST IVE BEEN TO A VIDEO
LOVE IT! :D
Just love your content IAM settled in for pt6
Love the hammer work. But what was the point in forging the pommel before machining it? Seem like you could have just machined it.
something about the jazz fusion playing over time-lapse lathe footage just... does it for me yknow
Super video!
Its been a while since you made the titanum hammer and have been using it a lot is it really good
Now that Ti is a hammer and a blade, how about a W hammer? Forging tungsten will be a great challenge don't you think?
I hope we can see a mirror finish on the blade... I know its really hard but u can do it!!
Just wanted to say Timothy I love your channel I love your new way of doing things and getting things done pushing the envelope hi what are subscribed to you and one of your people that is on your channel said I was just trying to get a free Knife when I asked if you could build one for me cuz I'm getting ready to come back with my channel and I need people to donate so my channel will be a success and somebody commented I just want a free night so I didn't really care about that yeah about a Cancer and I'm trying to get some sponsors get some new things going but it is what it is but I just wanted you to know
Super glue and sanding dust to fill gaps of inlaid items into wood, great way to hide those gaps.
Haven't heard your final review on the Titanium hammer yet!? Did I miss it???
As soon as I saw the shot at 16:22 I said to myself "I hope that speed wobble isn't going to cause issues". Oof... I guess it had a chip stuck on it up in the chuck?
you planning on doing some more madness with that gigantic chain mail tim?
I love this can you do a titanium Damascus
Love this and can't wait to see what's to come.
What about titanium tongs to go with the hammer, and hows about a titanium anvil?
Why the forging process on the pommel? It was big enough as round stock to just machine.
I don't understand why you forged the part before machining it. It looked like you had enough stock when you started. Just getting into this sort of thing help me understand.
Wood needs brad point bits my dude. Check out fisch brad point bits. They’ll do you right 👍
Give away a titanium blacksmith hammer, that would be totally awesome!!!
So, like what would this knife sell for in the end?? Like 7 grand or something in that neighborhood?
next time do the threading as soon in the making of the part as posible . so in your case aftrer cleaning up the rod . it will be a time saving tip for when you break it
My guess would be for the axe 🪓 as the giveaway.
I wonder what your experiences with the final blade are going to be. Personally I don't think it's going to be very practical. AFAIK titanium is typically not used for blades because it has a very low rockwell hardness and a bad edge retention. Even 420 steel is better at retaining an edge. There are titanium blades out there, but they're typically treated somehow.
Tim: I can see light
Me: tim dont go towards the light we still need ya buddy
OR
Me: time at least your not blinded by the light
And from your comment I immediately went to the original Poltergeist movie, "Carol Ann go towards the light".
An insert in the gap would also have been nice
