I recently managed to digitally archive this orchestral overture to the Metroid Prime Trilogy, a classic sci-fi film series from the 50s! A Hollywood orchestra and choir performs the sinister, bombastic theme with help from otherworldly early synthesizers and a prelude narration. What a blast from the past!
Instruments used:
• Live narration
• Flute, piccolo, and bassoon - East West Hollywood Woodwinds
• Trumpet, horns, tuba, and bass trombone - East West Hollywood Brass
• Timpani and snare - East West Hollywood Percussion
• Harp - East West Hollywood Harp
• Celeste - Spectrasonics Keyscape
• Choir - East West Hollywood Choirs
• Violins and full string marcati - East West Hollywood Strings
• Melodic synthesizer - Logic ES2 custom patch
• Ambient synthesizer - Sugar Bytes Aparillo
Global filters used:
• Izotope Vinyl to emulate a worn, warping medium of playback
• Xfer Records OTT to compress and sculpt loudness
• Logic ChromaGlow to emulate tape saturation
• Logic DirMix to reduce stereo spread
Fun fact, the chozo suit used in filming was so heavy and bulky that the actor who played Samus couldn't get back up if she ever fell down. This limitation is what lead to the implimentation of the morph ball, as it meant they would never have to show her crawling through tight spaces. Truly an innovative film.
The directors also had to pretend she was a guy under the suit in order to get the movie greenlit. It wasn't until very late in production that executives caught on, but by that point the movie was too far along to replace the actress.
The scene where she takes off her helmet in the ending was even removed in some theatrical versions
Bravo 😂
I know this is overstated but I think Metroid Prime might be one of the best classic movies to date, and certainly the best one out of the trilogy. It presented a large action set piece and pioneered the space travel genre in movies. It’s a shame that rereleases of it were sparse so thank you for at least archiving the opening Scruffy. My condolences.
sorry i respectfully disagree as the best one in the series. While we cannot deny the impact that the first film in the series had across the sci-fi genre and film making as a whole, the second film in the series with its technological achievement in the development of technicolor and how that new technology was used during the transitions between the light and dark worlds was not only magical but a paradigm shift in how we see movies as we do today. And that fact is completely ignoring how the film presents the significant themes and concepts which had never been put to cellophane before which went further beyond mere imagination. Hell Jim Henson even later used those themes and concepts as a inspiration point when he made The Dark Crystal decades later.
I apologize, I get a bit heated. granted I have a bit of a bias as my grandfather not only played one of the space pirates in the film but also animated the beam blasts and puppeteer-ed the Emperor Ing monster so I have very fond memories of him telling me stories about the production.
Samus' reveal at the end of the _Metroid Prime_ movie is definitely one of the greatest plot twist in film's history.
The commitment to the old sci-fi movies, down to the narration, make this such an enjoyable experience
Ok but can we talk about how Scruffy's Transatlantic accent is perfection?
Er, I mean- what an incredible piece of history! We're so fortunate to have this preserved in such good condition! 👀
I think I saw this on Wario Science Theater 9000. That was my favorite episode along with Cosmo Beasts and The Thing That Wouldn't Stop Eating.
wtf this is sick, nailed the vibe perfectly
I thank you for your commitment to the preservation of this important yet oft overlooked part of film history so that future generations can see it. Truly a masterpiece of science fiction media both in 1956 and today
When discussing the all-time great sci-fi films, I think many people overlook 1956's Metroid Prime. In an era dominated by body snatchers, blobs, and fifty-foot-whatevers, this film really proved that truly great science fiction could be brought to the silver screen in ways unseen to that point. The innovative special effects may look cheesy now (you can definitely see the strings holding up Samus' ship in some shots) but they must have been mind-blowing to audiences in the mid-fifties. That's not even mentioning the in-depth worldbuilding, the likes of which had only previously been seen in literature. And the fact alone that a movie from that era had a woman in the lead role and didn't diminish her to then-common stereotypes is something to be applauded. Extremely underrated film, and a solid 9/10. The only reason it doesn't get a 10 is because sometimes it does feel like the plot is backtracking on itself.
Oh the Theremin is a really good replacement for the choir parts.
Scruffy always manages to create content that caters to me specifically in the most niche ways; this is so sick
Oh no way, I would have never expected this. Fantastic
The Metroid Prime Trilogy theme is SUCH a good track despite never being in an actual individual game. Thank you for showing it some love
Mmmm yes, live narration is my favorite instrument as well.
This is something I never would have thought of but it’s really neat!
I want to know how your mind works to think of these style mixes you dream up. This is amazing.
I'm impressed at the audio quality of this recording. it never ceases to amaze me what is possible with recording and mixing technology nowadays
I love retrofuturism so much
I love Metroid. Thank you, Scruffy.
This has become my new favorite thing. So much of Metroid is heavily inspired by classic space operas, and just the opening synopsis of the first Prime game being in the narration just sells it. I hope Kenji Yamamoto gets to hear this, because I bet he would love it.
Scruffy releases this the DAY I finish playing my first Metroid game…. what are the odds?
Which one?

The director of this movie apparently was exacting in his requests when filming, and apparently would actively film scenes with himself in the roles in order to demonstrate the overall vibe and tone of the scene for actors to replicate, meaning that somewhere, it’s possible there’s a whole cut of this movie with just the director!
That Hip Tanaka could direct like noone else! I love all his films
It's unfortunate that this would have way less traction without the visuals. The visuals are great! Happens to match the OG black and white of your channel too
scruffy just knocks it out of the park yet again
I'm so glad I'm subbed.
This is incredible
this is so cool and out of nowhere i love it
I remember seeing this on svengoolie and being surprised I had never heard of it before glad to see I'm not alone in discovering this amazing trilogy for the first time. I also just now am realising I forgot to ask. Why can't metroid crawl? I know its a silly question but I'd really like to know the answer as I find this film trilogy fascinating.
Incredible work! Reminds me of so many old shows like Space Patrol
Fun fact that I’m sure you may have noticed - the Metroid Prime Trilogy menu theme incorporates a leitmotif from a theme from each of the three Prime games in order
this is so cool 😭
Sure, Chris Pratt was passable as Ridley in the reboot, but no-one will ever top Vincent Price's portrayal.
The super high-pitched melody makes a lot more sense on a theremin than it did with the shrieky soprano voices they used ALL OVER the soundtracks for 3 and the Trilogy. Good change.
This is insane ! Like this feels real
Absolutely incredible holy moly.
this is so beautiful.
This is so creative, I love it!
Such a killer idea!
Love the theremin
haha awesome. not a metroid fan but i do enjoy this mixture of eras very much
@@burger1378 Start with Zero Mission, you will not be disappointed.
@@GherkinGarboi Nowhere did they say they hadn't played the games nor that they're looking for recommendations.
amazing
Love it!! Great work!!
i heard that the actor actually really liked being in the suit so much they never took it off
This is awesome!!!
In an alternate universe Doctor Who didn't make it ... but Metroid did, the tenth season was realised by some guy called Ridley Scott, they were working on some alien movie but when they were given the occasion to work on Metroid they dropped everything
I wish I could watch this movie
One of the great classic film serials that helped inspire Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
Omg this is throwing me off so much, there are obvious signs it's not real, yet it's not made very clear that it's a fan work 😵💫
What i ❤
Excellent package
This was the first film in history to blend special effects with live action footage. Before the advent of CGI, the filmmakers had to stretch their production budget to come up with a way to make the metroids interact with the characters onscreen.
Still looks seamless to this day! I watch it every year!
LETS FUCKING GO
Wow
LOL I approve!
Does anyone else remember the 2002 remake of this movie?
How dose he do it
An extra does of caffeine maybe?
They stole so much from this movie in the making of "Alien" down to the name of some characters. Let's not forget this classic came first!
Aren't you the guy who got ripped apart by a great western engine?
I liked the part where Metroid came in and samus'd all over the place
This isn't real lol
This feels like analogue horro
0:55 holy that's amazing 😮
