Hunter quoted from the rolling stone interview:
"OK, to get very egotistical about it, way back when I thought we were making music for the ages. I thought that’s what we were doing and it’s what I tried to do. It’s what Jerry was trying to do. That’s one of the reasons we based our stuff very heavily on traditional music as a continuity with that tradition. That it worked out that way and continued to survive was not a big surprise…. I look back and I’ve realized what marvelous good luck I’ve had and a lot of it has it do with the persistent loyalty of fans. That’s a blessing! I won’t play for a couple of years and I forget. Playing Grateful Dead songs to Grateful Dead fans - there’s nothing to compare to that, being up onstage and doing “Ripple” in front of people who’ve grown up with that song. They love it, and I’m able to give it to them as close to the source as you’re going to get."

Hunter's masterpiece: a brilliant version of Terrapin Station stripped back to its origins in the Scottish ballad Lady from Carlisle, in turn stripped back to its Biblical origins in The Book of Daniel. Recorded here in London - I spotted Hunter in the street and walked on, thinking I was seeing things.

Saw Hunter at the Cellar Door late 70s maybe 80. Very small joint , 125 seats. We had two drunk assholes sitting at the table next to us that kept talking during the songs and heckling him the whole time. Really!? I was starting to get pissed and after one song it’s dead silent and Robert is tuning his guitar. So this nitwit says “ He looks like Elmer Fud “ Its embarrassing, rude, totally uncalled for. I’m about to snap. After a few seconds go by Robert looks up and has the best comeback ever. “ Nasty Wabbits” That eased some tensions for about ten minutes. The dumbasses spilled their drink in my girls lap. They should never have done that!

Hunter created a mythical Old West more convincing even than Dylan's cowboy songs. Cruel White Water is my favorite and always wanted to see Weir or Jerry cover it. Maybe Weir or Lesh (gasp) will do a tribute concert for Bob and play his songs. Robert Hunter is the ONLY member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame who never performed with his band. He's the only exclusively lyricist in the Hall of Fame. He didn't mind calling people assholes in the audience, very unusual. I remember him saying, at a show I attended, "I can't wait to go home, but my wife said to not expect a hero's welcome". "And that's fine". I imagine Bob finally set sail on the Maria Helena, bon voyage my friend. RIP

Lou, nice job. The tags are nice too. I have Rum Runners and Tiger Rose on vinyl. I liked them. I never heard this one. My new favorite! Hunter was a real wordsmith. I think he really pushed the Dead to the top. No other band had lyrics like this. Very deep and colorful "painting" with words. I like his voice too!

Despite the iconic accolades of us alive now, it will surely be the case that 50 years from now most of these tunes will be an integral part of American Music forever. I really enjoyed the song roll Columbia river.. have never found it again. Meeting the Merry pranksters was awesome, didn't know about the history at the time. Was lucky to live in laytonville, a small town home to the old hog farm people, Black Oak ranch.. , and wavy gravy. Much love and RIP Hunter, . Was cool meeting jorma, jack Cassidy, and Mitch Mitchell, and other characters. And was awesome to be gifted so many tickets, and backstage passes, food , and transportation to the beautiful dead concerts.
