Thank You most kindly REALVSMITH , Robert Hunter is one of the Modern Age's greatest visionaries/poets/lyricist/musicians, and I believe it is his open-ness to muses from other eras and other cultures that expands upon his innate genius --- I love you Robert Hunter. sincerely yours James
This man is the poet laureate of my generation. They talk of great songwriters and I never hear his name mentioned and he is one of the greatest there has been or will be . Rest in the arms of God
Saw Robert Hunter at the New Daisy theater in Memphis, Tennessee in the spring of 2002 (April I think) It was a surreal experience. 50 year old men sitting in front of the stage like they were Kindergarteners at story time. So much respect and reverence and was such an intimate experience. After the show he shook people's hands from the stage and signed autographs, including his Box of Rain book that I had brought with me. I recorded the show from the balcony with a pair of AKG C1000's and a Sony D-8 analog deck. God I wish I knew where those tapes were...
I came of age in the 90's and there is some good music from the however I say 1996 was the day the music died. Or year lol. The alternative scene before it became commercialized. Though I listen to nothing but 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's music and I was born in 81 so it was before my time. Funk, soul, blues, jazz and I have 958 Grateful Dead CDs. Anything that came out after 2000 I have absolutely no use for of any genre. It's all pop music now. Old school is where it's at. You sound like you have a good musical head on your shoulders. Check out Fela Kuti, he is unparalleled. Read about him on Wikipedia too, fuckin super interesting dude.
Yeah, that was a good show; very rowdy from what I remember. Hunter praised the New York Giants and stated the the Dead's recent European tour didn't go over so well in some places.
Love you hunter rock on and thanks for teaching and giving us these beautiful flowing tales I’ll see you in terrapin for that is where all will return for better or worse.
Adam's Rib He sure was, the quintessential storyteller and a true Bard . Thank you for the appreciation of the images used 😊. I hope to do this epic poem justice one day, what I want to do to expand on in the imagery I used is beyond my technical skill. A friend of Hunter’s is a friend of mine. Much love💖
Brings me back to mid to late 70's. Bleaker Street two shows each night he was there at the Bitter End / Other End. Tix were probably $10. Good times....
There's a decent quality download of this live on the Archives 97 Fox theater Boulder. Is the only time he has performed the entire suite with recognition. Good walking town Boulder. Coolest show seen at that little maybe 500 person place and seen lot of shows there over the years from Phish to String cheese to mcoury band to Electron. You name it. This Terrapin was the best thing ever played there.
Met Robert Hunter briefly, he was opening for Richard and Linda Thompson at a venue on Long Island NY. It was a late afternoon show in summer and we were standing in the hallway and the front door opened and out of the late afternoon sunshine a man running with his guitar case flew buy (obviously late) and we exchanged a few brief words. Wish we had more time. Great show though.
I never cared too much for this song when I heard the Dead perform it, but when I heard Robert Hunter perform it, I got chills, and still do. I got to see him live twice, and know my life is more full for it. Thank you RH for all you've given us.
James, This is such a beautiful comment ya made about R. Hunter, so true. The muses and the archetypes. For me to hear this music stirs something ancient and magical within my soul.To see him live is an honor; the way he transitions from one song to the next is pure perfection. He is, to me the quintessential storyteller. At the same time he’s able to be totally straight up and in the now if that makes sense? The tune “One Thing To Try” has some of the best advice I’ve heard in a song.
"One thing to try" is so good yes! Take care of your people... "Rose of sharon" "Book of Daniel" "Arizona lightnin" "Touch of darkness" whoa But especially all of it
@hubblebubbly Thanks! I got to see him when he came to Seattle about 6 years ago, someone in the audience requested Terripin and he said he would do it the next night, I ended up get’en tickets for the next night and he performed the whole suite, it was a beautiful thing, just the man and his guitar. I’m glad I got to hear him play it live because he said he would probably never do it again.
This is so beautiful ~♡~ We were so blessed to see him perform at Variety Play house in little five what a gracious honor to see the man of many amazing stories lift his voice to feel the air with supreme magic it was so beautiful. Hope I am blessed again to hear him tale his tales of old come to life like words leaping off the pages of ancient pages!~☆~
Hard to find this now. It's too bad that the Dead never completed Terrapin. In fact. Hunter wrote even more lyrics that he never recorded either! Thanks for uploading.
My little brothers middle name is Jerome his birthday is 5/2/96 and I love him with all my heart, Nate I will love you forever. This made me think of you.
OK finally got someone to dwnload that album for me just leave it up another 2days please... And yes you are awesome being so nice to a perfect and total stranger... The world needs a little more of that example! Thank you again
Thanks, good question, I uploaded it 2 years ago, back then there was a 15 min limit for most users, thankfully they changed that rule, now we get to see all these incredible shows.
What a gem!! As a lifelong deadhead, i always thought it was funny when i heard things like, "Robert Hunter was an honorary member of the Grateful Dead." This man was THE MUSE! Arguably the soul of the Grateful Dead. The worlds he created, inhabited by the likes of Stagger Lee, Bertha, Tennessee Jed, Althea, Reuben and Cerise......are not only reflections of our own, they are a world of their own.
I love Terrapin Station, but hearing it sung by Robert Hunter gives it more depth it seems. There's nothing like a song or a group of songs that actually tells a story and puts you in the midst thereof. I thought that Albert Bouchard of Blue Oyster Cult fame was the only one that had songs like this when he made the Imaginos demo tape, but Robert Hunter seems to blow him out of the water! Thank you for publishing this!
I remember finding a copy of this CD years ago.... so many hours of searching, followed by a thin trickle of bandwidth to download it on... And here it is! Haha, good upload, brev. I remember my room mate at the time talking about how he had to hear this song all the time while trying to sleep, because the room I was in was under his. Eventually he tried to take a crack at a couple of the parts, only to discover the guitar was trickier than he imagined. RIP Bob, you have always been my favorite GD member.
You do realize this is the ONLY studio version of Hunter's Terrapin on THE WHOLE !@#$%^ INTERNET!!! Id love a full mp3 copy for myself... LOVE IT!!! (why never released on cd???)
The annotated lyrics are at whitegum. Is cool to read. Very pretty stiff. Thanks for putting this up. Almost impossible to find on a record nowadays. Is very kind of yoj
Thanks for posting realv ! I don't think this album ever made it to disc ): nice archive link too...So cool to hear Hunter's visioning of this tune, one of my all time favorites too, this epic tale of Terrapin......nice job with the imagery too, you really captured the essence of these profound lyrics.....the music never stopped ~
I thought he peformed about 40 minutes of "Terrapin" on the album? Maybe I'm mistaken. He has a good voice! This is my favorite Garcia/Hunter song -- thanks for the upload!

I agree with you ... thanks for your words
Thank you James 💖

RIP Robert. My life would be very different without you
Jacob Shoaf he died close to my birthday
Robert Hunter ❤️ with his lyrical masterpieces was the unsung hero behind the magic of the Grateful Dead!
Absolutely. He was.
Always loved this version for making the story complete. Hunter was the band's wizard behind the curtain. His job was to shed light, not to master.
It's now all of our jobs. To only shed light. Never to b master
🥺😻✌🏽🥰🔥✨
🌹🌹🌹
So well spoken ❤❤❤
The essence of 🌱🌹🥀
The storyteller makes no choice
soon you will not hear his voice
his job is to shed light
and not to master
Rest in Peace, Robert
❤️⚡️❤️
Thank you for this masterpiece and your legacy Rest In Peace Robert Hunter we love you more than words can tell.
Robert’s lyrics made a difference in my life for 50+ years. RIP old friend. 🙏🏻
Travel well, Mr. Hunter. Thank you for your decades of wonderful poetry! We love you more than words can tell!

Godspeed, sir. The world's a richer place because you passed through it.
I'm 26, and I still find this to be better than 99% of music in the 90's and 00's.
Sturgeon's Law

I saw Robert Hunter live in NYC at the Ritz Nov. 9, 1990 and he played this. I'll never forget it.
Yeah, that was a good show; very rowdy from what I remember. Hunter praised the New York Giants and stated the the Dead's recent European tour didn't go over so well in some places.

RIP Robert Hunter...awesome songwriter!
The depth and beauty of Hunters lyrics are indescribable, forever grateful for words that touched me deeply since I was a child.. fly on RH
xoxoxoxoxoxoxo CB your heart and mind always seem to be united in kind place...thanks for that
If the Dead (or Jerry Garcia solo) had recorded the whole thing as an epic double album, it would have been their greatest achievement! .
It took Jerry 15 mins to sing a 3 min song😥

Ivory wheels on a rosewood track, quick Jack take us back to Terrapin!
Happy Birthday Robert Hunter 🥳🎉🎈 2022🥰

One of the best songs ever penned. Eternally Grateful.

Hunter’s “Gallo dell Cielo” (Tom Russell) is one of his best performers ☮️ I made a tape @ Wolfgang’s in SF Oct. 10 1981
Going to see him next week. I can't wait..it has been 20 years since I last saw him.
@hubblebubbly Thanks! A free performance in PEOPLES PARK , Berkeley for the TEN ANNIVERSARY in 1979 was one high day

Thank you for this. I needed to hear this story. It is the right time.
yes, today i needed this Thank You All...
Statements just seem vain at last. This thought has came into my humble mind so many times in my earthly existence.
Hard to find this now. It's too bad that the Dead never completed Terrapin. In fact. Hunter wrote even more lyrics that he never recorded either! Thanks for uploading.
he's swell, huh? absolutely the best translator of Rilke the world has known.
Rilke?
@@paisleybabee google it😉
Saw him in 88 or 89 at UVA! It was such a treat! Dave Matthews Band was the opening act
I derive such pleasure from listening to this song as often as possible.
"strangers stopping strangers just to shake their hand" Thanks for posting.
Real bummed when i read Robert passed. You will be missed. All love.
So good.
So Beautiful to hear his voice.
Listen to it all.
The world became less. The pen goes silent but echoes of the words will live on.
My little brothers middle name is Jerome his birthday is 5/2/96 and I love him with all my heart, Nate I will love you forever. This made me think of you.
now i'm really sad. i had no idea that mr. hunter had passed on. this earth is a poorer place now...
poet of Terrapin his expression of. more precious there's none
RIP Robert Hunter....
So Sad...
Inspiration move me brightly
Light the song with sense and color, hold away despair. Been listening to this for 42 years and it still moves me brightly.
OK finally got someone to dwnload that album for me just leave it up another 2days please... And yes you are awesome being so nice to a perfect and total stranger... The world needs a little more of that example! Thank you again

Nice to have stumbled upon this! Brought back some great memories of listening to this album back in high school. Thanks!!!
Thank you. Thank you so very much.
Thanks, good question, I uploaded it 2 years ago, back then there was a 15 min limit for most users, thankfully they changed that rule, now we get to see all these incredible shows.
I just found out about his passing today! Rest In Peace, Robert Burns, AKA Robert Hunter!
What a gem!! As a lifelong deadhead, i always thought it was funny when i heard things like, "Robert Hunter was an honorary member of the Grateful Dead." This man was THE MUSE! wonderful images to go with this great jackoroses song. Ty.
Ya man , u stand the moon homie , I'm proud to see u live with a a water bottle by my side, RIP my 2nd father

Saw him in Houston back in '86 at a small club called Rockerfellers . . . my initiation into the Dead
I’m so lonesome I make Hank Williams look like a party of five , is the best line I’ve ever heard in a song ……absolutely brilliant ✌️👍✌️✌️✌️✌️

Beautiful!
His job was to shed light; not to master.
a poets poet..like no other.
absolutely!!!
this is remarkable!!!!!
First time I've heard this version and first time i've heard Hunter sing.. The band should have let him sit in!
They did occasionally.
Happy Birthday Robert Hunter!
what poetry!
More, more more and some more please xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
My LP of Jack O' Roses was "borrowed" over 20 years ago. Been missing it. Thanks for posting.

No it did and I used to used to have a copy :)
A fantastic rendition of a magnum opus RIP Robert Hunter.
Miss you already.
Thank you Realvsmith
I am a day late but wishing a very happy Birthday to one of the greatest bards in American history.
Jerry was the soul... Hunter was the essence.....
I think they we're just both play'n in the band
Excellent performance straight from the horses mouth, his original name was Robert Burns, that's no coincidence.
Thank you....
RIP Robert Hunter :(
This is the best song ever written
He was like the bards of olden days.
Most definitely Andy, 💯💖
Thank you so much for this upload and gorgeous video
robert is so lovely
thank god he and Jerry hooked up
I love Robert Hunter
I miss Jerry
love

I thought he peformed about 40 minutes of "Terrapin" on the album? Maybe I'm mistaken. He has a good voice! This is my favorite Garcia/Hunter song -- thanks for the upload!
Outstanding
The "Rosewood Track" section sounds a lot like Jethro Tull. Bob probably wouldn't think that was a compliment, though..
I think 11:11 sounds like Syd Barrett
If anyone can rival Bob Dylan as songwriter, it must be Robert Hunter.
Just imagine if a really great Bluegrass band played some of his songs!
Add to that fine mention.......Joni Mitchel ( familiar with coyote ? ) and Paul Simon....(.spirit voices)
awesome lyrics, would of been awesome if Jerry would of had time to complete it. Grateful he got as far as he did though.
Rip our YELLOW ANGEL
Rest in Peace Jack of Roses, how great you were
I can really hear the English/Scottish/Irish bard aspect to his voice/storytelling.
100%
Beautiful
Magical .....at a 1/4 to twice we roll again .
Hello, good soldier, where you been?
Did you take the wrong way round to get to Terrapin?
@@realvsmith So Funny I'm listening to it Right Now , lol again and again ....
