Scare Off Your Opponents Grip with Wrist Locks

  • Wristlocks in BJJ are an underutilized and often under appreciated technique. In a lot of situations people will call them cheap or even cheating!
Personally I've grown to really like wrist locks albeit unintentionally, in my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu arsenal. For multiple reasons.
    1. If you begin to attack people with wrist locks. Even if the submission attempt is unsuccessful at causing the tap. Afterwards, the opponent will be very cautious about where they place their hands on you. They begin second guessing their attempts which makes their BJJ techniques inherently weaker.
    2. It's a great submission that can be hit from so many positions! Just like with leg locks. Why would you NOT add something to your game? Be as well rounded as possible and throw as many attacks into the mix as you can!
The particular wrist lock I show in this video is from Full Guard.
It's simple BJJ submission that works right off of a common hand placement when they are trying to posture.
The wrist lock is a fantastic stand alone submission by itself. But it can also be used to disrupt your opponent's attempts to posture up and break guard.
I hope the video is helpful!

Can't wait to give this a shot tomorrow. Never occurred to me, even with out the tap, the potential setup for other positions is great. So many times I'll find someone trying to pass my gaurd and their hand is in the perfect position. Thanks as always Chew!

There's a new guy at the gym, he's younger, stronger and faster than me so it's frustratingly difficult to break his posture. I'll give this a go. Helpful advice as always. Thanks.

The gym I go to is a small, new one and it's actually pretty good like that. Most of us are in our 30's so there's no reckless teenagers who don't know their strength and there's very rarely more than four people rolling at once so the coach has a very close eye on what's going on.

Thanks! I'm a 56 year old new blue belt who is in way over my head! I've been watching yours and others videos for the past few months. I'm slowly figuring out how to delay and avoid getting submitted. Attacking the wrists has made even the younger more aggressive guys in my gym wary of what I am doing as soon as I get a hold of a wrist or elbow. I find this is breaking their focus on their attacks. It is not much! But, going a full 5 or 7 minute round to a draw is a win for me as I have a history of having to tap several times a round. I really wish I'd started this 30 years ago!

I'm 62 yrs old 5times cancer survivor. I was a Bodyguard for 25yrs. I was 240lbs and am nw 200 and not very strong. My son is 270 lbss and 25. This lock works on his big ass to create some space, he just about jumps off of me faster than I've ever seen him move!

Question for chewie. How do I let someone know I don't like rolling with them without sounding rude? There is a big guy at my gym who always stacks and injures me and everyone else at the gym. Even when he isn't stacking he just does moves that injure me and doesn't really use technique just power. He is nice guy besides that but I hate rolling with him because no one likes being injured. I'm 165 he is 240. Thanks! Like so he sees this please!

just don't roll with that guy. just tell him every time you roll with him you get hurt and you don't feel like getting injured today.

Generally, in my gym, you try to roll with guys who are no more than 30lbs heavier than you. That would likely fix the problem.

Starrybump 2 hey starry, sorry for a heaps late response, I don't know if you'll even be able to see this.
I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum and have been given criticism to how I should roll with team mates extremely lighter than me. As I have come from a powerlifting background and weigh close to +30kgs over most of my gym member's body weights, it's extremely frustrating to see everyone kind of look away from you when you look at them signalling if they want to roll with you - and then you get stuck with no one to roll with for one round on an odd numbered day.
The way I got told that I should take it easier was that people significantly lighter than me (easily 30kilograms lighter than I am) would come up to me and ask for a flow roll. When I was a freshie white belt, I had no idea what it meant and clearly was doing what your friend you are talking about is doing.
After a while, I started to grasp the understanding of a flow roll and decided to use little to no force in any of my movements to manipulate how the round would go. I would feed off my opponent's momentum. Maybe try asking him if he'd like to flow roll with you.
Either that or just tap before he even gets a chance to stack or create injuries. Another option would be to ask him if you could choose the position where you start off at to make up for the size difference.
If worst comes to worst, tell him nicely why you don't want to roll with him. Or simply look for other people to roll with before he gets the chance to ask you for a round.
      OSS!

You are always putting people in jiu jitsu submission holds...
"Hey guys. I just want to show you how to do this jiu jitsu submission hold."
Thanks for all the jiu jitsu submission holds and advice. You helped me figure out why my triangle choke submission hold wasn't as effective (and hurt my foot sometimes.) Problem solved.
Also, the music is cool. And I'm sorry if anyone actually took the time to read all of this..or any of this. Lesson learned; don't read UA-cam comments, you maniac. Life is short and you have better things to do. Like watching more videos on how to do sweet moves. I don't have the answers for you....look up there. I have practiced combat hapkido for 6yrs and bring a lot of wrist locks to my bjj game. While wrist locks are not doable in tournaments for my white belt status, the blue belts and higher love rolling with me because it makes them think through the ever present wrist lock danger. I find the Center Lock is the most useful because I can hit it from almost any position. I very seldom get a submission out of it. I use the wrist lock to move my opponent either out of a position he is in or, into a position I want him in.
BTW my 6yrs (2nd don+) in combat hapkido helped me very little when I roll bjj. People ask me which art is better? My response is if you want to dislocate a joint learn combat hapkido, if you want an art that will keep you interested the rest of your life AND keep you safe on the streets start a journey in BJJ and mix in some kick boxing.

I'm curious to see how wristlocks develop in BJJ. In Judo, wristlocks and finger locks were among the first techniques that were made illegal in sparring because there were some people that were so good at them that as soon as they were grabbed, the other person got locked, which kind of made it close to impossible to apply a Judo technique on them, which basically kind of made sparring them kind of "pointless" when it came to developing Judo technique. So, the solution that was arrived at was to make those techniques illegal. I kind of wonder whether this will happen in BJJ or whether people will just become really good at countering them to the point that they just stop getting used.

Question Chewie. So at this point I'm about 307 pounds. However I have lost about 40 pounds just through diet basically. So my question is should I wait to lose more weight before I start BJJ or should I not worry about it so much and just go? I just don't want to be the guy at the gym nobody wants to roll with because of my weight.

    • @TheLZempir3
      @TheLZempir3 7 років тому +3

the answer is start BJJ now. It will help you lose weight, and you may never get started if you wait for the moment. Today it's i'm overweight, tomorrow could be I need to build some muscle. It may take you a LONG time to lose "enough" weight, or you might become accustomed to the idea of getting ready to start training, and you may find another reason to delay.
