- Wristlocks are an effective, if potentially dangerous, submission in BJJ sparring, they just have to be applied a little differently than in Aikido, Hapkido and Aiki-jitsu. Other related techniques and videos include...

Great vid, as a new blue belt I've started playing with these to open up defense of my opponent. Thanks .
Im glad you mentioned apply slowly because we are here to learn and we should all be kept safe. I would rather let go knowing i could than apply for the tap during training.
Oh, man, the sankyo lock/straight arm lock combo is killer from that step-over triangle position from broken scarf. Naaasssstttyyyyy!
Stephan you left out the best one that everyone needs to learn. The one where your opponent reaches for an underhook in lets say sidemount and you wristlock them using your armpit.
Great stuff! Although I'd recommend NOT trying wrist locks on someone who is two or three belts higher than you. You kick them in to high defensive mode! It's an automatic reaction, and usually gets you choked out fast and hard. Lol!
It makes a great last option, not a first attack. Just my opinion.
Please use responsibly! Yes, it’s one quick way to break a wrist and equally swift to make your teammates hate you.
brilliant! I have been submitted the first one a couple times. This material becoming usable again via BJJ and positioning by isolating the arm in rolling situations reminds me of seeing trapping finally make sense in mounted positions, I first saw that through Marc Denny.
New blue belt and got on a wrist locking kick. Wristlocked like five people with these. Thank you!
Hey man! Got know of you through Rokas!
Think I should send him this video - he's pretty bummed out these past few weeks, think it might bring him back a bit to see good ol' wristlocks being applied alive again.
Solid podcast, btw - I often don't listen to them, but good stuff :)
Hi Stephan! For me Aikido and wrist locks sometimes sounds almost like synonyms, specially when translating it to BJJ. I'm still struggling to find them, or how to make sure they work and this video is a great direction and pointers for me to look at, so thank you!
It was our conversation Rokas that gave me the idea of making this video. Thanks again!

Aikido is not bad... Not bad at all. Like quite many people say... In the end it all comes to how individual is capable to apply aikiskills (pretty hard if there isn't any experience of fighting (sparring)). Same goes to BJJ locks, not all can apply juji under the pressure when another is struggling against etc. infact you can see many locks/chokes failing in BJJ/MMA tournaments (it seems that many have forgotten this or chose not to remember it) 🤔
Great Wrist Lock Tips/Concepts...I’ve gotten a handful, but I’m going to try these too. Good explanation on isolating the forearm.
You are great athlete and coach
Could we see a follow up video on how to ESCAPE wrist locks? Thanks!
Make a fist. Free your elbow. That's the defense for every wrist lock
Thanks! BTW I really like that triangle setup!
You guys rock -many thanks!
Good stuff. Thank you.
Hi Stephan!
I left a comment on one of your earlier Aikido application videos in BJJ (I've trained Aikido for about 4 years and wanted to take BJJ as well at the time). Well, I just started as a white belt at Gracie Academy and I'm really enjoying it so far! It's so fascinating to compare and find the cross-over points between these 2 jiu-jitsu based arts and their different approaches.
I'm still learning the basics of BJJ like armbar from guard and mount, or the standard triangle choke, the americana, the guillotine, etc. etc. - But it's very interesting for you to find these Japanese Jiu Jitsu based joint locks within the frame work of BJJ. It helps me take advantage of my cross training and further my own martial studies. Thank you!
I hope you are doing well, my friend. Best regards.
Excellent! Very practical and useable.
Very informative video, i appreciate the teaching sensei.
Great as usual. Thanx!!!!!
I've successfully used Daito Ryu wrist locks at will during jiujitsu grappling or any grappling. But it earns a lot of hate because most jiujitsu guys think I'm a dirty grappler or cheater for using them. Same w/digital chokes, neck cranks and face gromets. As if heel hooks aren't dirty and wrist locking is. SMH. Guys who claim wrist locks don't work soon tell me they're afraid to touch me after I keep locking or torquing they're wrists w/Daito Ryu based locks. I'm extremely careful not to injure them y release the lock. Not to get tap just to open up for dominate positions.
I would advise not using body weight to apply opportunistic wristlocks on misplaced hands. Wristlocks are so funny to me because even when I tap to one I don't feel like I was really tapped - like it's an unmanly way to "win". Of course, it is a real submission and a real tap but I still have my "denial" thing going on in my head.
BTW, what you were showing as your favorite triangle entry is mine too ( alright, my only triangle entry ). In the gi I will grip behind the tricep but that two on one grip is my favorite at the moment. There is a lot you can work off it.
Ed McGuigan agreed. Body weight rapidly dropped can really F up someone’s wrist!!
Wrist locks 🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨
Senseiii!!!
juicy stuff mhm
I'm generally ok with most of submissions applied to me WHEN DONE WITH CONTROL ffs, but me havin unbendy wrists makes me tap FAST when subjected to one of these, especially when part of an self defence "kata" going like bend, pull, drag, bend some moar.
How about aikido application from defense of label grab in judo/bjj ?
Anyone know the IBJJF rules on wrist locks at certain belts? Thanks!
Legal in blue and upper, illegal in white
Anything possible in bjj
Edit/ is wrist lock legal in MMA ?
i need some wristlocks in my game
so question why are wrist locks look down apon in bjj community, there look down more then heel locks
Because they are quick and can be very painful/damaging if applied suddenly with a lot of force, similar to leg locks. They also can be an ego punch 😂.
dont agree with the heel hock / wrist lock thing. cause the damage of a heel hock is soo much bigger, if there is pain, mostly because your knee is already injured. the wrist can take much more punichment
but nice video
Is this legal?
I think it's amusing you have opertunity to go for another submission but you're going for something else got a guy deep in a shoulder lock but it's his wrist you're going for but I guess two for the price of one
Wussup?
yea dude holla
It is quite funny, that in another video this man claimed that he sees traditional martial artist when fighting BJJ trying to get the wrist and he claims it does not work.
However in this video he is showing wrist locks. Are BJJ this arrogant and hypocritical?
Really?? He did that? 🤔
