Fetish from Analogue Obessions is also great. The side chain circuit it has, really lets you dial in the sound In any case, the UAD LN sounds more "ready" meaning that, depending on what sound you're going for, the Nikel has a bit of a build up in the low mids, which sounds great on its own, but in the context of a busy mix you're *probably* going to dial the low mids back a bit with an EQ, whereas the UAD version sounds like it should, for lack of a better word. Waves is cheap, used on countless of hit records, its the company everyone loves to hate/diss, but it sounds absolutely fine, it does not require hardware to run on, doesn't cost absurd UAD prices, doesn't require an expensive CPU...really makes one wonder if the price (of the actual plug in/hardware) to "quality" ratio, is worth it. Anyhow, my favourite 1176 is the Nebula Tim P U76, even though I mostly use Fetish these days cause the side chain feature let do 1176 style compression and really focus on the frequencies I want to control. I also use the UAD but less than the ones I mentioned and I don't have the CLA...although in retrospect, I would just spend the 25bucks on the CLA and with along with Fetish, I'd just focus on mixing.
I use FETISH on my vocals all the time. I like it better than all other versions I've used that are payed. I would love to see what Matty thinks of FETISH.
I’ve always loved the Waves 1176, as long as you’re cool with narrowing the perceived stereo image of whatever you run through it. It imparts an instantly “in your face” kind of sound. I’m surprised how close the Waves and Acustica one are sonically. They sound VERY similar to my ears. Nickel seems to retain a little more “depth” and maybe a slight bump in the lower frequencies. I’ve never fallen in love with any of the Acustica comps before. Their EQs are stellar though. Probably because I got spoiled by some Nebula compressors ;)
i love grey - their dbx - my go to for the master bus, weirdly enough; tan - their ssl bus; and opal - their oram compressor. aquamarine sounds great, too. they do have some great compressors. when it comes to acustica, pretty much everything sounds at least good, if not great. they always win in every shoot out i do. i haven't come to terms with their ssl channel compressor - sand - which is one of my favorite compressors of all time, because of the different choices that are hard to shoot out since they seem gain staged differently, i'll have to dig in deeper on those. and haven't tried their fairchild, and this their 1176. but beyond the super weird interfaces, and the cpu assassination attempt, everything acustica sounds great.
Your professional ATMOS setup is looking great, Matty! In regards to the video, these plugins all sound like 1176s to me. I wanted to hear Nickel with the pre engaged, but for whatever reason, it still sounded thicker than UA's version. Nickel actually gives me nostalgia on how IK Multimedia's Black 76 FET sounded, when it first came out. Ha. Anyways, thank you for another video! Peace.
Awesome video as usual!! (The quality of your audio examples, always reveals the differences/subtleties of what you are discussing... even on UA-cam.) I've been wanting this plugin; waiting on my Acustica 'loyalty' coupon (which I now have). Happy New Year, to you and yours!! :)
The UA sounds like the singer is pinching their nose by comparison. The waves sounds closer but still lacks dimension. The Acustica retains dimensionality like hardware… if you close your eyes you can “feel” the air in the room with the singer. Sort of like listening to $500 monitors versus $4k monitors. The Acustica tech makes the algorithm plugs sound like, well plugins if you’re used to hearing hardware. All that said, track and release your songs with stock plugins if it sounds good, who the hell cares? Too many budding engineers now and the music itself is almost an afterthought.
my favorite 1176 is the blue stripe and the UAD version is the best plugin version i’ve heard. the thickness of the acustica version is nice but i can get that with other plugins of theirs like crimson. short of hardware, the combination of UAD and acustica is as good as it gets for me.
thanks for video ! My Favourite 76-th is PULSAR 1178 , amazing sound, full-featured sidechain EQ section , M/S mode, and modern metering section make it unbeatable :), but this new AA beast looks and sounds really great.
At least in this example, I definitely feel that the UAD version is so much better. That may change on certain material, but here it's the UAD for me 100%.
Surprised that people don't talk more about the Slate Digital 1176 emulations that are part of the Virtual Mix Rack. The compression artifacts on them are by far the most realistic I've heard. Acustica's compressors are not great, they have some random ones that do a good job, but overall I'm really just there for the EQs and the preamps for coloring. The El Rey is awesome, and the Camel Compressor is amazing as a bus compressor, the Sand (SSL) Bus compressor is REALLY good, but by far the most realistic sounding analog sounding compression from them is the Lime 2 (88 series Neve consoles). Honestly this 1176 sounds kinda ass. Really thin, really pumping (might be because you set the release so fast but it shouldn't be so exaggerated regardless). It does do the shininess thing, but the signal becomes so flimsy, so it's worthless. An 1176 should tighten the sound up and make it punchy as hell, while maintaining weight, if not even adding more depending on how you drive it. Whenever I want 1176 I just go for the Slate ones. The Waves is cool as a plug-in in its own right, but it doesn't sound like an actual 1176, really digital, thins things out so much. Thank you for the demo though.
the CPU usage for Acustica is ridiculous, and I'm on M1! for a simple compressor is non sense to use this, so little difference with other light CPU ones
Well...that was a weird and funny one. one. I literally turned off my monitors and asked my wife to stop doing weird things and to turn off kitchen devices because I heard buzzing during your videos. Then in the end I realized it's your vocal recording which is producing buzzing weird sound. Starting at 3:05 (second part of male sentence). Then at 3:10 and so on. It's so weird that I was thinking it's my wife blending something with her horrendous machines. In the end we laughed quite a lot. Good video nonetheless.
Shmod isn't the release, it's a "shape control for the attack behavior that allows you to fine-tune the attack shape"
Correct you are. I misspoke. Should have said attack. Thanks for pointing it out!
@@mixedbymatty no big deal man ;-)
Already bought it but so far I think i generally prefer Tim Ps 76, although I`ll pick this for something dirtier.....thanks for the vid.

Fetish from Analog Obessesion is probably the Most Hardware Sounding
@@lawinter1949 yeah Fetish is brilliant. When I first downloaded it, I wasn't expecting much, being a free plug in. Then I was very impressed.

I’m going with CLA76 based off cpu usage. Both sound almost identical though.
Yah. Waves 1176 always holds it's own.
@@mixedbymatty Hi Matty, have you had a chance to try DMG Audio's TrackComp 2, and their 1176 in particular?

After all these years do you still find that Nickel compression behavior is right? Do you still use it?

What? Ha ha no no no, there is something better
IK Multimedia is my favourite 1176. Don't know why but it just sounds the best to me.
That’s a great one too. IK is super underrated.

I Love Purple MC77 by PA
Even thought the tone is there with Nickel, the timing is off witch result in a strange pumpy compression. Thx for this video.
Soon as you played audio through the Nickel it sounded nothing like an 1176. Weird pumping and artifacts is what I’m hearing…
I agree, but that could just be because the release is set way too fast, kinda ruins the whole demo lol
The aa sounds like hardware the uad is harsh and thin
Props on your investment in acoustic treatment. Gotta be nice having all that absorption.
Awesome video. I really liked the thickness as well.
Peace.. I like the Arturia 76 with the extra eq's side-chain better than UA thought the Nickel sounded the best.
I’m a big fan of the Arturia as well.
Loved the weight that the Nickel gave to the voice
Same..I think it can work for some songs. Might be to heavy for others.

I the IKMultimedia version of the 1176 om drums in the vox but when I track vocals i use my War Audio wa76

If is not optimized for the M1, that can explain the poor perfomance.

Black Rooster 3A actually sound better than this on Vocals, Baselines and Drums
The Acoustica version sounds cheap in my opinion
