  • The Georgia State Railroad Museum (formerly the Roundhouse Railroad Museum) is a museum in Savannah, Georgia located at a historic Central of Georgia Railway site. It includes parts of the Central of Georgia Railway: Savannah Shops and Terminal Facilities National Historic Landmark District. The complex is considered the most complete antebellum railroad complex in the United States. The museum, located at 655 Louisville Road, is part of a historic district included in the National Register of Historic Places.
The museum is across the street from the Central of Georgia Depot and Trainshed, also part of the historic district. The complex was constructed in 1853 by the Central of Georgia Railway (CofG) before the outbreak of the American Civil War. Savannah Shops and terminal buildings were declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976, a listing which was expanded in 1978 to include additional buildings in the complex.
The historic railroad structures at the Georgia State Railroad Museum site include a partial roundhouse with operating turntable, partial machine shop, Tender Frame Shop, Blacksmith Shop, Boiler House, Storehouse & Print Shop, Lumber and Planing Sheds, Coach and Paint Shops, and a partial Carpentry Shop which now houses Savannah Children's Museum. Many of these structures are open for visitors to explore.

My now deceased "Love of my Life" used to ride the Nancy Hanks from Savannah to (points forgotten), but she always had a glimmer in her eye when speaking of her memories aboard that Train and how she was treated and looked-after as a little girl back in the day. Her name was Joy Cargill, daughter of "A", (Henry) and Mildred, (Mimi), Ambos of Ambos Seafood.

I model the Central of Georgia in HO gauge but CofG coaches in that livery are impossible to find as is an E-8 to model the "Nancy Hanks" and the "Man O War." CofG was purchased by Southern Railways in 1963, and in turn was purchased by Norfolk Southern in 1982. Cheers from an ex-Georgian in eastern TN

I wasn't aware of that. I am a model railroader myself -- and I've got a few model trains of the Southern Railway as well as some the Florida East Coast and Seaboard. I do collect a lot of memorabilia from railroads from the Southeast -- my grandfather worked on the Jersey Central -- so I inherited some of his model trains, too (like the CNJ Blue Comet).

Why not visit the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland? They have a unique collection

I'm definitely going back to film it. I haven't been up to the B&O since the roof collapse - I am curious to see how the repairs turned out and what equipment they were able to salvage. The B&O was one of the very first museums I ever filmed -- but the video I posted here is really old, I filmed it way back in 1997. I do need to film it with a modern camera.
