Donna injected a new kind of energy into the show after the slightly uncomfortable relationship between Martha and the Doctor ... Tennant bounced off her brilliantly, and I've always enjoyed this start to season 4 ... A season that steadily built up to its epic climax brilliantly!
Martyn Stembridge yeah, I really liked Donna as a companion, she was someone who could really butt heads with the Doctor in the way that none of the other companions, before, or since, have done. You can really see some of Lauren Cooper in her character, and David also brings his energy to clash with her, in much the same vain as that one Red Nose Day skit they did together, which was basically a crossover between Doctor Who and Lauren Cooper.
This is still THE funniest episode for me: - 10 and Donna missing each other at the beginning - The mouthing through the windows (I personally loved it) - "It's...sleek, right?" "Oh, yeah. Definitely sleek." - Basically any moment Donna was onscreen, she will forever be inconique
I have to argue about the Shadow Proclamation thing. Foster may be willing to break the law, but she's not happy about it. She's uncomfortable with it and gets edgy (murderous) when she's at risk of getting caught. However, she displays utter disdain for plucky adventurers like the journalist. By tying himself to authority - notably an authority that her employers are answerable to - he paints himself as something she cannot afford to ignore. It may bite him in the butt (as she kickstarted a process he couldn't undo without unexpected help), but it's very very much the Doctor to tailor his approach to have the optimal impact on his opponent. As for the hints she drops (Adipose and Foster), they always struck me as the result of a fusion of arrogance and guilt. She doesn't believe that humanity is intelligent enough for informed enough to catch these references (and, to be fair, they clearly aren't), but that little display of cheeky honesty is a much needed relief valve for a woman born to be a nanny but forced by necessity to to run an intergalactic criminal enterprise. Outside of those comments, I'd like to add that I've been following and enjoying your Doctor Who content for quite some time, since well before your Overdue Reviews began. I may not always agree with your take, but your perspective is always worth considering and your presentation of it is always entertaining.
I get the law quoting thing. Miss foster isn't just being evil for the sake of It, or to conquer the world. She's out to do a job. Like when it's finished she will imagine she will go back home, bask in the money she's earned from this job, and possibly be employed again for a similar task. The doctor is basicly saying "No. Stop being an idiot it's illegal (her being away from home could easily make her forget that) you're doing this, because it's the easiest way off making alot of money but if your caught (and very likley to be) you could end up with nothing" If the whole purpose of you breaking the law is to make money, then someone reminds you, that actually you could loose eveything, especially now I'm on to you, sometimes it can be a wake up call. Or maybe breeding on a level 5 planet is a bit like going topless in Dubai. Some people might actually not be aware it's illegal, just a little immoral. He does something similar in the 11th hour with the atraxi. Again not evil for evil sake, just wanted his prisoner back. Got carried away in his desperation. Maybe a bit like when our police force are willing to use illigal forces for confessions. "You was gonna beat up an homeless drunk for information? Did you think no one was watching? I've sent many bent coppers to prison over the years, now pee off before I do the same to You" I agree about Donna's music. Although I don't think it fits. It fits the episode of them sneaking around and being spy like characters. After this eppisode though it just doesn't work. Whilst watching the serise try and make note how often it's used other than this eppisode. I honestly can't remember it being used after this story.
Also when he says "they want to get rid of the accomplice" and "mum and dad have got the kids now, they don't need the nanny," that seems like a last attempt to tell her that she won't be helped by anyone else. It's like telling a drug dealing friend they'll eventually be alone in their crimes. So I see it as the Doctor saying "you're doing something illegal, and no one will want to associate with someone doing something illegal."
I love this episode, such a fun reunion. The window scene never fails to crack me up, though I can never figure out what she mimes after ‘... on the internet’ 😂
"I just wanna mate," "You just want TO MATE?!" "A mate." "You're not mating with me Sunshine!" Even they were cracking up at the read-through on this. Love Donna!
I loved the window scene! I thought it was the perfect ending to the Doctor and Donna missing each other bit. I remember when I first watched this episode, I had been very unhappy that Donna was coming back. But by the end I was like hell, yeah! Especially since it ends with Donna making it very clear that she's not looking for a romantic relationship (which is actually a relief for the Doctor). This was some of Russell T Davies best writing and character creation.
The window reunion scene is probably one of my favorite scenes in this episode. Tennant's face is absolutely priceless and always makes me laugh. I'm laughing just thinking about it.
@@tatianamelendez490 Indeed. I never connected to Rose as much because her relationship with 10 felt more artificial than we already saw with 9, Martha was treated too unfairly for me to enjoy but with Donna it's written and acted perfectly with real chemistry and that's why she's my favourite companion.
I agree with you on Donna's theme. I don't hate it, but it just seems odd that Rose, Martha, Amy, Clara and Bill got some really nice compositions that were whimsical at times, but also soft and wistful, serious. And then Donna gets a Looney Tunes theme. I mean sure, have some sassy notes in there for the character, but she had some great serious moments as well. I tend to associate "Life Among the Distant Stars" more with Donna even though it's not her tune (I think it accompanies her conversation with Wilf, and when she flies off with the Doctor after making sure to wave at the telescope) That would have been a great theme for her.
After watching Runaway Bride, I was ready to quit the show when I found out that Donna was going to be the new Companion. By the time Partners In Crime was done, I was actually starting to like her. Donna is my favourite New Who companion, hands down. Bill comes a close second, but Donna is always first. She has the best dynamic with Tennant, without all the romance and/or unrequited love that plagued the previous three seasons (which I've never liked on DW) and she's funny, warm, compassionate, brave and so sassy - but in her own way. She's wonderful. This was a solid first episode that set up a lot that would be built on later (the shadow proclamation, the disappearing planets etc), so you can't really begrudge it for being a little cheesy in places. At least, I can't. To each their own, however.
This has always be a personal favourite of mine. Donna and 10 is the main reason, but is also great sci-fi. You mentioned in Gridlock about inflating basic every day concepts (for gridlock thqts the traffic jam) - here its weight loss. It just works. Even the cartoon-fall damage death miss foster gets at the end i feel like can be explained as the gravity beam fades from the bottom up, with the light going of when the shut down starts (maybe not the soundest explaination, but thats the fiction part of sci-fi). Donnas theme is a little pantomime, but as long as its used in relaxed scenes it works. Inserting it into the segway scene in the runaway bride was noxious since the episode should have been buildeing tension. Theres this one shot of donna sitting at the table, feeling like she cant function with her mother jabbering on at her, busy at all times (i think its juat before she goes to the hill to meet wilf) - Truly one of NewWhos BEST scenes, absolutely love it Id say its the best start to a new season so far, and going forward only the 11th hour is on par with it.
I'd say regarding the quoting the law thing, it's more for the benefit of Miss Foster rather than necessarily reflecting the Doctor's own priorities. She seems fine with the loss of life so the only way to make her actually stop would be to remind her of the serious ramifications of her actions for herself. I think the Doctor thinks she would be slightly more likely to heed that, rather than just a reminder of how murder is wrong. This may feed into the Doctor's more active attempts to try to save her - but admittedly it can just be read as a slightly out of character line that RTD thought would sound cool.
9 did the same thing with the Nesteen Consciousness. He quoted galactic law and asked it to leave, not even mentioning the death of Wilson the electrician and possibly others too (not to mention the deaths in Spearhead from Space, etc., from his earlier incarnations). That seemed more in character for 9 because he himself was dismissive of humans in general, but your point stands because neither the Consciousness nor the Matron cared a whit about any humans they hurt. All they cared about was not being called to account on what they were doing.
I love that her first inital complaint when they’re back together is that he’s in the same suit. Also “Do you know what happens when you hold two sonic devices to each other?” “No.” “Neither do I” *zap*
I feel like in modern Doctor Who they often very intentionally make episodes “Doctor Who does [GENRE]”. Unicorn and the Wasp is a murder mystery, Blink is a straight up horror piece, Voyage of the Damned is a disaster movie, The Lodger is a romcom, Return of Doctor Mysterio is a superhero movie, etc. This episode has always felt like what Doctor Who would be like if it were a cartoon show. And that’s not a criticism! I kinda love it for that. It’s silly and weird and fun, and I feel like you could use it as a pitch for a Doctor Who animated series. HOWEVER I totally understand the more camp elements not working for you, I love them but that might be pure nostalgia. Honestly I’ve rewatched the first five series hundreds of times (only a slight exaggeration) both as I was growing up and like, recently, because that’s my most nostalgic Doctor Who comfort food. I love all of Who, but if I need a nice warm blanket it’s what I go for, so it’s hard for me to separate those feelings so that I can have a considered critical analysis. It’s bias basically. I’m overexplaining bias. SORRY
Bernard Cribbins played a main character in the Peter Cushing Doctor Who movie Daleks Invasion Earth 2150. Wilf was another missed opportunity to retcon those movies into the canon.
Donna is my favorite companion too. Runaway Bride was my very first episode of Doctor Who and no one else really compared to the introduction to Donna for me and then her coming back (when I got there, after RB I went to e1 of the new series). Tennant and Tate just have fantastic chemistry.
Donna is the BEST companion for Tennant, and I wish she'd had longer than a season with him. I love their rapport, their sense of fun, but also Donna's understanding of when things need to be taken seriously. She is so amazing and grows so much during her time with him. I never get tired of watching them get into trouble and have adventures. Honestly, I think Donna brings out this Doctor's best self.
I really like Donna's theme! It's different from the other companion's themes and might seem a little silly, but that's never bothered me. I also think the window scene is hilarious.
The scene between the doors is very english humour I think that's why you Dont like it as much, because I've heard no complaints my side of the pond and people seems to just adore that moment. But you know its also just plain old opinions.
I love it. I also felt, the point of it was the fact it went on way longer than needed too. I think it would have been better if us as an audience had saw miss foster clock them and they still carried on unaware but we knew everyone was looking at them.
+Greasy hair His only real complaint about it was that it went on to long, which it did, not that he didn't like it that much. For me, it started really great but by the end I'm thinking 'get on with it.' I'm from your side of the pond, so now you have someone from here complaining about it. ;-)
Donna is my favourite companion in New-Who & always will be. Her back and forth with the Doctor and in this episode, the bit of them missing each other everytime and the window scene are some of my favourite/funniest moments of Modern-Who. I absolutely adored Wilf as an addition to the cast. It's funny bc for ages, Amy & Rory were my favourite companions, and now they're probably third on the list with Bill as a close second, but upon my recent rewatch of the show, Donna quickly became my favourite companion and i fell in love with her properly. She's one of the more relatable companions too - granted, I am a sixteen year old girl so I can't relate to everything she goes through but more in terms of her not feeling special, and wanting to get out and travel & do something good, fun and exciting with her life. But she's just fun, too. Her banter & back and forth with the Doctor, challenging him in the fires of pompeii, etc etc. She's just... Great. I love her sm.
A great start to one of New Who's top two series. I love the scene with the Doctor and Donna miming to each other though the window. Back in 2008, when I first heard Donna was gonna be the companion, I was convinced she'd be awful, but boy was I mistaken! 10 and Donna is one of my favourite TARDIS teams. Tennant and Tate bounce off each other brilliantly. And I like the Adipose. They're something different from the usual DW monster, and Cofelia is a refreshing change from the normal villians. Instead of being obsessed with domination, she's just doing a job, but using an ends justify the means logic.
I love this episode. Probably in my top ten. A really funny adventure with Donna and the doctor. Light but has some deep character moments and really quaint scenes.
The best part about Donna is that she makes it clear from the beginning that there is no romantic component to their relationship. I wish this had been the end of the romantic aspect of companions which it almost did.
Yep, I agree that Donna is the greatest companion of all time. I disagree about the window-meeting scene: It's one of the cleverest and funniest scenes in all of new Who IMO.
Huh, weird I only just realised that Partners in Crime is also the name of an Agatha Christie short story collection and she shows up later this series--I doubt that was intentional but it made me chuckle. I love this episode though, it's not one I watch very often but it's probably the best series opener that Davis gave us. I think it just works really well for what it wants to do and that's exactly what you need for an opener.
The only time that the whole law thing works is in the 11th hour when the doctor says to the atraxi "you think nobody noticed?" and then they crap themselves and running off and he's like I am the doctor. It's is annoying in this though.
I assume the name drops like 'Adipose', etc. are there to stand out on re-watching, or just drawn in to give the attentive watcher clues _or_ mis-directions.
I like Donna's theme SO MUCH! I think it's the best companion theme in Doctor Who. Its suits her perfectly, its just fun to hear and it is really catchy:)
I sympathize with you as usual here, but I agree with you less than usual. I agree about the Doctor quoting law: it's out of character. I disagree about the miming through the windows: maybe it goes on a bit too long, but I think it's OK, it's quite amusing, it doesn't bother me. What I like about this episode is the Doctor and Donna -- even though I'm not a Tennant fan. What I don't like is all the Adipose stuff, the fat that walks away, it's another unconvincing Doctor Who monster concept. I dislike most of the Doctor Who monster concepts, because I don't believe in them. I didn't like Donna when I first saw her, but she grew on me, she's good.
So the Shadow Proclamation bit was that doing the part where they seed an inhabited world is illegal, which is why he points it out to give her the chance to leave. It's not necessarily morally wrong todo that part. It's only when he gets confirmation that people are being murdered en masse that it becomes a real issue.
It is a story I guess Jim Sterling would enjoy greatly... you have a perfect solution for a problem that serves multiple sides. People lose their unhealthy weight problems, new (even adorable) entities gain life at the same time... but then a ceo type comes along who is too greedy and something good turns catastrophic.
It felt to me like they couldn't think of another way for the Doctor to try and assert authority over Foster, in a way that she'd listen, so they referenced the Shadow Procalamation, as it also helped seed it for later. Kind of like a get out clause for that moment but it didn't seem like a Doctor thing to do.
You must be the only one that doesn’t like that window scene. They acted that out so well, especially Tate. I was dying laughing. My favorite Who scene ever!!!!
I was glad to have Donna back but I thought the whole Adipose thing was "too silly" even by Doctor Who standards. Wish they'd reunited Donna and the Doctor in a story with a decent "villain".
I feel like this *should* be better than Smith & Jones, but in my mind it's not. I think S&J is a much more efficient introduction to the new companion. It also introduces the new mystery box much better - I don't like that right from episode 1, we know for absolute 100% certainty that Rose is back.
Shure Catherine Tate is an exellent Comedian . She really gave her role depth One of the best compagnions in DOCTOR WHO history. She and Jenna Coleman had been both top as sidecicks among the modern Doctor Who seasons.
Donna is awesome, my wife can't watch DR who, it gives her nightmares, but she did watch into the Smith/Amy/Rory term, and a little Smith/Clara with me before it became too much for her, and she agrees Donna was the Best. Amy is great too, don't get me/us wrong, and Martha was great too, although poorly used by the show's plot.
I quite like that "mouthing through the windows" scene, although I totally agree that it went on too long. They could have lost half of it in the edit and it would have been more effective.
I don't know whether it was there because of Catherine Tate's comedy style, as I've never seen her shows, and it started great but definitely went too long for me. It hits that 'get on with it' moment which is never good.
@@lwaves I love Catherine Tate, in and out of Doctor Who, so I don't think it was her style. Like you say, it started great but outstayed its welcome a little.
WHAT? THAT's the part you didn't like? I think the real life reason for your little... not-a-nitpick, is because people who think they're clever always think they're cleverer than everyone else. It gives them a thrill to see people find the hints and *not* put them together. That's something you see in real life, maybe not as much as in TV or books or movies, but it is very much real. And I think partly, if they really are thrill-seeking, they're kinda half-looking for an opponent who is as smart as they are. I know that if I were a villainous character I would totally be doing it. :D
I know some people think the Adipose are cute but I just don't see it, I think they're just disgusting. Every time I think about them I just feel queasy. And it's horrifying too, when they pop out of people.

Theres this one shot of donna sitting at the table, feeling like she cant function with her mother jabbering on at her, busy at all times (i think its juat before she goes to the hill to meet wilf) - Truly one of NewWhos BEST scenes, absolutely love it
Id say its the best start to a new season so far, and going forward only the 11th hour is on par with it.
Nooo Donnas theme is beautiful, But I do understand it’s not everyone’s cup of tea I guess
I really like it too, themes like Martha or Amy are sad and beautiful, but Donna's is just fun!
Yo who else gonna let Nathaniel roast them like that at the beginning?
I can't exactly slap him from where I am.
If the Doctor is speaking the law, to say, the Atraxi from Eleventh Hour, then yeah, it makes sense.
Good on you Nick, what a legend 👌👌👌
Donna is my favorite companion too. Runaway Bride was my very first episode of Doctor Who and no one else really compared to the introduction to Donna for me and then her coming back (when I got there, after RB I went to e1 of the new series). Tennant and Tate just have fantastic chemistry.
I loved the miming through the windows bit 😁
Love that bit
I’m a Brit and wasn’t keen on that scene either.
@@CulturePhilter oh okay, yeah, of course it could just be opinions too.
For me, it started really great but by the end I'm thinking 'get on with it.' I'm from your side of the pond, so now you have someone from here complaining about it. ;-)
I'm glad Wilfred was tennants last companion
Also that he got to be a companion, not just a recurring guest star.
Haha I'm not sure #Doctorwhoreview works as you intended, maybe I'm just dirty minded tho😂
Lol thanks, now I can’t unsee it
Awesome episode. I love the comedic timing on display.
Video Begins
"I'm waving at fat"
Me: Hey!
This is the kind of goofy silliness I like from Russell. This is a really fun, funny episode that’s a straight up cartoon, and a solid one at that.
The window moment is my favourite moment of doctor who of all time!
Love this episode! Honestly really fun, and very doctor who!
Re : Evil Dad Jokes.. it dates back to the James Bond Villains. Its all over ther super hero /spy genre. I Love It!
I love this episode. Probably in my top ten. A really funny adventure with Donna and the doctor. Light but has some deep character moments and really quaint scenes.
Also, who else caught the ATMOS sticker on the taxi??? Excellent layering
It definitely made me chuckle.
This is definitely one of my favourite comedic episodes. I always love to rewatch it!
Im waiting for "Turn Left" bcs it is my fav epsiode
Huh, weird I only just realised that Partners in Crime is also the name of an Agatha Christie short story collection and she shows up later this series--I doubt that was intentional but it made me chuckle. I love this episode though, it's not one I watch very often but it's probably the best series opener that Davis gave us. I think it just works really well for what it wants to do and that's exactly what you need for an opener.
Oh, it will totally be a reference.
@@historymysteries4134 I really really hope so :)
Apparently the reporter Penny Carter was supposed to be the companion before they decided to use Donna
Don't say that something is "fantastic"... cause then I'll quote Ecclestone's last words...
If he's reading this, Hello Nick.
Her behaviour in the runaway bride was reminiscent of her sketch show characters. I dont think that was an accident.
“What is going on?”
“Are you a journalist?”
“Ya.”
“Well, then make it up.”
Your sponsorships are the only ones I don't skip, because you don't do a boneless Raid: Shadow Legends script reading.
I’ve had offers like those.
@@CouncilofGeeks They make me angrier than The Timeless Children.
And that's not easy.
Actually it was Martha that influence The Doctor which Donna stated on the roof and you forgot to mention Rose surprised cameo at the end!!!
So the Shadow Proclamation bit was that doing the part where they seed an inhabited world is illegal, which is why he points it out to give her the chance to leave. It's not necessarily morally wrong todo that part. It's only when he gets confirmation that people are being murdered en masse that it becomes a real issue.
Adipose is what fat tissue is called, that's where the name comes from.
This person is so apposed to light hearted themes they don’t even like happy music, that’s impressive.
No thoughts on Rose reappearing?
Jack Eaton he doesn’t overmuch seem to care about her!
Thankfully, from my perspective....
Donna was the best companion by far. Tate is a superb actress and the chemistry between Tennant and her was great.
What about the Wile E. Coyote-ish death scene for Miss Foster? Funny or Dumb?
That's a really well balanced thumbnail.
Yeah I consider the thing about the doctor quoting the shadow proclamation is kind of strange considering he *STOLE* his Tardis
Did you just call every single one of us fat?
Funniest Doctor Who episodes ever (for me): Partners in Crime, Frontier in Space, Brain of Morbius, Robots of Sherwood, Holy Terror, Caerdroia
I loved the Pantomime bit!
I have to say Series 4 was my favorite of the Tennant run.
The judoon are gonna be in series 12
I quite like that "mouthing through the windows" scene, although I totally agree that it went on too long. They could have lost half of it in the edit and it would have been more effective.
I don't know whether it was there because of Catherine Tate's comedy style, as I've never seen her shows, and it started great but definitely went too long for me. It hits that 'get on with it' moment which is never good.
@@lwaves I love Catherine Tate, in and out of Doctor Who, so I don't think it was her style. Like you say, it started great but outstayed its welcome a little.
This episode is so much fun, and I still think the Adipose fat babies are really cute!
I like this ok. It's fun and I love the rose camio
I honestly found the Adipose more grotesque than Cute and Goofy.
Only one problem love all you reactions, but hello Donna my old friend, just occurred to me
My favourite new who episode.
I’m not fat !
I love this episode for both ironic and unironic reasons.
I know some people think the Adipose are cute but I just don't see it, I think they're just disgusting. Every time I think about them I just feel queasy.
And it's horrifying too, when they pop out of people.
9:20 Fools
How is this not called "Overdue Who Review." ?
Amy is my favourite.
