The Doctor/Donna miming scene was completely improvised by Catherine Tate. The script just said 'Donna Mimes'. She being a cracking comedian added her own flair to that moment. I heard her say that at a convention.
@Voltaic Fire she's still fantastic, so is Tennant to be honest
Their chemistry was incredible. I never really gelled with her comedy before Who, but the energy and heart and genius Tate brought to Donna was, to me, one of the great high points of Who, as was the way that she and Tennant bounced off each other. Cracking performances from them both, two astoundingly talented people becoming, together, even more than the already magnificent sum of their parts.
Personally i found Catherine Tate's over the top acting irritating and annoying. Still i didn't rate Matt Smith or David Tennent either so obviously i am in the minority. As far as i'm concerned there have only been two actors who have ever done the part of the Dr justice and they were Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker

I’ve almost forgotten what a good episode of Doctor Who looks like.
MitchCyan mate. Forget s11 and 12. Until a writer is recruited to correct the show after the Chibnall train wreck, s11 and 12 is un-cannon. Instead, watch Series 1 - 9. Golden era. And Series 10. A bit of a dip but it’s still quality Doctor Who.
Dr D Series 10 was always one of my favs, pretty underrated imo.

Fun fact: the journalist character was actually Russell T Davies' originally planned companion "penny" for series four. However, they discovered Catherine Tate was interested in coming back for the series so she became the companion but he left penny in the episode anyway as a reference to what could have been!
An interesting fact, definitely fun for sure.
The journalist woman had more character development in one episode than Yaz, Ryan, and Graham had in two seasons.

It also makes story sense that Cribbins filled that role, because The Doctor running into him by chance ties into the whole Doctor-Donna fate stuff orchestrated by Dalek Caan
This series is the most consistent in my opinion, there’s only 2 episodes that are below an 8/10 here for me (Fires of Pompeii, and the Doctor’s Daughter.) and even then I think both of those episodes are great.

To me FoP has a good function of showcasing both the Doctor and Donna's characters at the end.

I know! You feel Harry’s soul getting crushed with every 12th or 13th doctor episode he had to cover. DT, Catherine noble and RTD are an unbeatable combo!
Every time I think of Dr. Who, THIS episode is the first to come to mind.
This episode basically embodies all of doctor who's good parts
Donna was actually my favourite companion; and the one I'd argue was the 'Best' of the New Who companions. And the strange thing is, I dont actually like Catherine Tate. So I even remember wanting to hate Donna, and finding that I just couldn't. Funny what good writing and character development can do.

I was a teenager at the time, and I remember being worried that she was gonna suck and bring it down. But she didnt, and her season ended up being one of my all time favourites, and she is my favourite companion. She was not the companion the doctor really wanted. She was the one he needed. She wasn't the one I wanted, but the same thing applies.
She was one of the earlier companions that I watched and I just found her so charismatic. She's amazing

I would suggest watching her and David Tennant as Beatrice and Benedick in the 2011 version of Much Ado about Nothing. She was amazing in that and has a surprising amount of romantic chemistry with David Tennant.
Funnily enough I watched this episode last night - gotta say, despite the weirdness of the idea overall, this episode was SO MUCH fun and I absolutely love the focus on character development.

Remember watching this episode with my dad and us having a great laugh and wonderful time. He passed now, but my memories with him just make this episode even more enjoyable for me.

Russell has said that the Doctor's just getting over Rose and "then wham! Both hearts!" Personally, I'm thankful we didn't get another 10/companion romance.
Series four is the actual best - always a go to series for me - I’d give it a 10/10

Imagine Wilf being your Grandad
This episide was filmed at my grandfather's companys office building in Cardiff known as picture at the time and my mother is the dark haired lady in dark blue at 3.34 It's so weird everytime I see this episode as both my mum and uncle are extras in the episode. My grandad pulled some strings and got David's Autograph on a Adipose questionnaire prop ^_^

I honestly think the miming sequence is one of the best scene in the show. No matter how many times I watch it, it STILL cracks me up
Even without seeing this episode for about 7(?) years, this episode made such an impact, I can still hear the noise of that spaceship. Fantastic stuff.
I love this episode, especially the bit where Donna and the Doctor see each other for the first time through the windows and have an extended mime conversation until Ms Foster says “are we interrupting?” (or words to that effect). And the scene where the Doctor says he wants a mate, and Donna says “you’re not mating with me sonny Jim!”
Given that later in the series the Doctor says that something kept bringing him back to Donna, and that he’d met Wilf before, could Wilf be related to Cribbins character from the Peter Cushing Doctor Who movie? I know they’re not exactly canon as far as Cushing being an official Doctor, but...

I love when the taxi driver pulls over to ask Donna where stacey is and you see an ATMOS sticker on his car... great use of foreshadowing!
Okay, I am so glad you're going to this series.
Showing Donna go from the basic secretary to someone who wants to be better was such a great idea. Showing instead of telling. Isn't that an interesting concept, Chibnall?
The villain was so good, so sleek and such a boss that, no shame for admitting, I got a sonic pen toy. Her death was a bit of a letdown because she was a great first villain for the series.
I do love how, with the adipose, it wasn't them being at fault. They're babies. It's the villain predacating on societal insecurities and using them like Zebu.
Donna was a companion Tennant needed. She knew what she was getting into and the chemistry was so good, Tennant and Tate worked together on multiple projects afterward. Super-Temp to the rescue. Love that bit in the Sontaran Strategym.. a two parter which has an ending that makes the sacrifice in Timeless Children look even more drawn out.
In terms of companions, Donna is my favourite in New Who, followed by Rose then Bill, Amy and Jack.

The only one I'm not keen on is the Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, and even that's good.

Recently on a re-watch I noticed the ATMOS signs on the cars, like the Taxi that Stacy gets, which is quite nice to see that it has spread quickly.
I'm so happy someone shares my adoration for Series 4's theme music. It's the best by _miles._

Donna is my favorite companion by far, the way her and the doctor play off of each other, their banter, the way she always acts at his level and so he treats her as such, it’s just brilliant

My eyes water and the biggest grin appears on my face every time I see that scene with Wilf absolutely overcome with joy at watching Donna fly off with the Doctor in the TARDIS and just screaming "GO ON!! GIT OUT THEH!!"
Surprised you didn’t pick up on the Atmos foreshadowing, but great episode as always
All I can say for the Doctor and Donna waiting all day for some after hours sleuthing is that the Doctor was hacking into that terminal he used to stop full parthenogenesis, and Donna might raise suspicion strolling in ten minutes from closing time. However, I hope Donna had a book or had UA-cam access on her phone to watch Harry's Haunted House reviews to pass the time. Great video as usual :)
series 4 is just a wow series makes you just shout wow after each episode

I know what you mean, simultaneously hyperbolic and inscrutable. I think that could also apply to the way VPNs are often advertised in these parts.
The idea of an app being an evil alien plot also makes me think of the episode that introduced (modern) Clara, something about wi-fi hotspots that uploaded people's consciousnesses (not that that was done particularly well).
I really liked how they touched on the Doctor's loneliness. It's evident, but it's not so on the nose obvious that the Doctor is lonely. Compare this to Can You Hear Me, where the Doctor literally points out lonely she is, talking to herself and then mentioning how she is talking to herself. It was so unnecessary to be TOLD the Doctor is lonely, especially when in this episode it is perfectly shown not told.
So happy to see yuo reviewing Series 4! It is by far my favourite out of all Dr Who and the Doctor Donna is unbeatable chemistry. I look forward to the next 12 weeks of your reviews.
This and eleventh hour are probably my favourite season openers.

I think 6 will get some weaker reviews from him... yes there are some great episodes in there (The 2 part opener, Doctor’s Wife and Good Man Goes To War all come to mind.) but I think it has a lot of bad ones. (Night Terrors... Closing Time... Let’s Kill Hitler... The finale... ew.)

The Dodo Night Terrors was up there with some of the best horror episodes in Dr Who, why tf do people rate that one low?
The Dodo let’s kill hitler. Harry nitpicked. It wasn’t so much the story but Harry’s personal preference that he didn’t like the direction but it wasn’t that it was bad altogether.
Edit: Let’s Killer Hitler was intriguing. It was conclusive, loved more or less every episode. Except closing time. I’ll give u that one.
jack dotdotdot I’m honestly so shocked. For as long as it can remember, Night Terrors, God Complex and The Girl Who Waited were like a perfect streak of filler episodes. Entertaining. Tbh I think people are just bitching. It was great. Only bad episodes of s6, closing time. All the rest were story based, dramatic, brilliant and the finale was conclusive.
You're bang on with that comment on RTD and scenes of confrontation in womens' bathrooms. There's also that scene in the SJA pilot- makes it three(?) in total? So far?
omg Sarah Lancashire in this episode! Almost nobody talks about Happy Valley on yt, which is crazy considering what a great bit of telly it is.
I know this episode is far from the best, but it's still one of my favourites and most rewatched as a kid, it's just such a really good time. Great review as always!
Donnas grandad also played Tom Campbell, who was also a companion to Dr. Who in the feature film Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. in 1966 he’s played two different Doctor Who companions....🤷🏽♂️
