  • Joanna Johnson is attempting to gain relief from paying child support because the child is now 18 years old. George (the father), with whom the child lives with, insists that there are ongoing needs associated with having a special needs child and that he still needs the extra help.

      As it should be.
      Many people don't realize when you make a decision to have a child, you sacrifice until they reach 18 years old. It then becomes your job to guide them into becoming a contributing member of society and keep them from harm.
      At 18 years old, the relationship changes into more of a mentor-friendship. It's actually awesome.

      I'm disabled and I when to 5 judge for child support when I was 18 they told my brother no he could not get it how was rasing me he was told to go to go to social security get ssi or ssdi

      @jermell Yes she is. I have two special needs sisters. They will require constant care for the rest of their lives. They are basically kids for the rest of their lives. Which means the parent pays for them for the rest of their life

Parenthood is a lifelong responsivity. the government should not be responsible for your choice. why should my taxes be used to pay for someone else's child who is never be anything as you put it? The government should create workhouse to jail parents who abandon their kids to be raised by the government. So they can work to pay for their children's expenses.

    I have a son with Autism and he is 20. Since he gets a disability check. I let his father off of child support when our youngest graduated from high school. We both still take care of him. We both will always take care of him.

      I have one with down syndrome and chd. He gets a disability check it helps but not that much the thing that bothers me is when the other parent feels they dont need too help financially because the child recieves a disability check.

      Go to the "About" section of the channel it's just entertainment these are actors and Bailey isn't a real judge, but she is a attorney these aren't based on any specific people, but like Law & Order just any cases that come through the system on any given day

      Sadly there are those that never grow up to deal with responsibilities. If you've gone through the courts and he hasn't paid, you can have his job checks garnished. I wouldn't let it slip by. There are statute of limitations depending on the state. Good luck.
      To add, keep the kids out of it. It always backfires.

      Mr Miguel - Yes I often wonder why the parents aren’t instructed to bring their most recent paystubs and tax returns to the hearing. Bizarre to use word of mouth for verification, she said she was earning 32k and then jumped to 42k, 2 minutes later. I wouldn’t trust her calculations. Her 42k could be her net not her gross.

    My heart and sympathy goes out towards their child and Dad. I do hope they have better and loving life now. It hits close to home for myself when comes to my own childhood and my son’s childhood with our learning disabilities with ADHD and my son’s Asperger Syndrome too. I could never turn my back on him even as he is adult now. We are loving bonded through shared ups and downs of disabilities that we do understand about each other when other people had not understood nor choose to understand. I had given to my son what was not given to myself and I had sworn to be different with my own future child in my childhood.

    I don’t understand why people think that when there kids turn 18 there job is finished and they can toss them out in the streets like dogs? At 18 your job is not finished if they go to college there job has just begun. Your job as a parent ends when your kids can move on on there own not when there 18.

      If the state says he/she is an adult then they’re an adult. As for college/university were does it say that the parents pay. College/university is not a right, nor is it the responsibility of the parent to fully pay, helping if they can afford it.

      @@JudgeVondaB is there a age cut off age after 18. In some states it up to age 26 if they were still going to college after age 18.

    Miss judge I love you because it is definitely about the kids always should be you shouldn’t have to do this but if it’s not for people like you more of us wouldn’t have anything I was raised by a single mom without help from my dad or donor so I know first hand how hard it is for a person to bring up 2 kids and the effects it plays on the child thank you for you’re on consensual reminder of being a parent it’s sad that it needs to be done but you make a difference for the child thank you very much

    I get why he’s so bitter. I have autism, and if my mom acted like that I wouldn’t WANT to do anything or improve. Moms and kind figures are very much needed for us. Removing that AND finance, I hope her son never finds out. A lie would be kinder.

    I know someone's who chid support stopped because kids got more on SSI. Every situation is different. He still covers all kids on medical etc. This judge is awesome and agree

      SSI is government entitled benefits you don't get more unless a cost-of-living for the following year go up and you only going to get $10 extra each state have a certain standard on the amount of their SSI payments

    My daughter is 21 special needs I am with daddy its not cheap she gets SSi but dont even cover everything she needs But as a Mom Would do what i gotta do for my baby

    I think this has become my second favourite court program to watch when my adhd brain doesn’t know what to pick.. My number one spot will always be Judge Judy though.

      I agree that she needs to take care of her child but chose your wording wisely because disable people are entitled to their benefits. That's why they have waivers and funding for them. Ask God for wisdom

    Your Honor, that’s not fair. Upon the child turning 18 and is considered an adult, child support payments should cease & desist. Unless severely disabled the supporting parent is relieved of monetary requirements. Under the law this is an adult who if proven eligible can receive state benefits for further care.

    I have mild cerebral palsy and when I was growing up my parents were able to get state insurance for me. That takes a huge burden off the parent. The question is how long should the support go on? Forever? That's not realistic. And I had SSI. This father and mother need to do their research!

      Joel Evans Actually in Texas, if the court determines that the child will have future ongoing medical issues, child support can be indefinitely. You’re more than welcome to read up on in Chapter 154 of the Texas Family Code.
