A 5000 year old Ancient Forest - a remnant of the Welsh Atlantis revealed on beach after storms at low tide.
A recent trip up to Garys Electricals in Clarach for a new second hand fridge freezer meant there was an opportunity for me to see if maybe the ancient forest of Borth Beach was visible. February and shortly after winter storms sends the sands shifting along the beach and now and then. revealing the ancient petrified forest situated a meter or so below. The winter months are the best time to catch this spectacle, for once the tourists return sometime later in the spring, the forest will once more be covered.
I took the drone up and flew low above the ancient forest floor for a few passes then I took off up the beach to get an overview. That was followed by a slow turn to take in the gob smacking vista of the Dyfi or Dovey estuary and the Cors Fochno (Bog) which is surrounded on one side by the mountains of the Eyri National Park to the north (Formerly Snowdonia - now by decree renamed in Welsh - because we are in Cymru! ) and the Cambrian Mountains to the east.
We are looking at the long village of Borth the popular holiday destination whom's population triples during holiday season. During WW2 there was an airbase behind the village where , fighter planes such as the Spitfire and Hurricane were assembled and tested ready to fly off to battle. There is no sign of this today from the footage but I assume it has been re-assimilated into the Cors Fochno bog.
The ancient forest was alive during the period 6000 to 4800 years ago when the shoreline was a kilometre further out to Sea. The tree stumps seen are alder, birch, oak and pine. Bones of aurochs, a massive now extinct ox have been discovered buried in the peat as well as a magnificent set of red deer antlers. Human footprints have also been found as well as the scant remains of a human constructed walkway, rather like the sweet way in Somerset.
Today the peat is hardened and it is no longer possible to leave footprints.
There are legends of now lost sunken lands around these parts specifically Cantre'r Gwealod (in english, the lowland hundred) which was said to be a vast swathe of coastal flats stretching out for up to seven miles along the eastern fringes of Cardigan Bay. This land was said to be the most fertile in all of Wales but it needed a dyke system to stop the encroachment of the slowly rising sea level.
One night the man in charge of opening and closing the dykes according to the tides, instead got very drunk and forgot to close the dyke and the sea rushed in at such a speed that a racing horse could barely escape.
There were said to be seven cities drowned and a nearby Aberdovey folklore legend has it that occasionally the sound of church bells can be heard during stormy seas.
Welsh Atlantis? well this sunken land and much of Cardigan Bay was dry land way above the sea level some ten thousand years ago when Plato said Atlantis existed. At the same time Britain was still connected to continental Europe via swathes of boggy flat lands across the entire north sea. Humans would have settled in these lush fertile lands with ample opportunities of fishing, fowling and foraging. The rising sea levels meant the population literally had to head for the then inland uplands, now the current land of Wales and Britain.
The legends of Cantre'r Gwealod can be traced back to the early medieval period and is spoken of in the Mabinogi. I have asked professional archaeologist's about this sunken land and whilst the timeframes may be different it seems that some sort of human memory must have told and passed down tales of the great loss of the fertile sunken planes from many thousands of years ago.
It was truly awesome to be walking around and flying over, these amazing ancient forests that are older than Stonehenge and The Great Pyramids of Egypt.
If you notice the peculiar cloud formations shown during the footage, it really set on fire as the sun set. After I had taken the last footage I headed back some 30 miles down the coast road and the the sunset was spectacularly awesome and it was recorded on my dashcam so I included a short section at the end of the video.
One more thing. I would like to think my work in this video is informative, I have never seen as comprehensive set of images of this forest as the footage I took. I understand my filming is not always perfect, could always be better but today was a unique opportunity, so I please forgive my shaky phone camera footage in places.
Music: 'Proxima Ultima' by Nostramus. The mood just seemed to fit although I had used a version of this track on an earlier video.
