WA2188 Merlin's Hill, Carmarthenshire
Large contour site atop hill overlooking Gwili-Tywi and Arnall-Tywi confluence dated to around 400 bc. A large triangular single bank and ditch is sited with the entrance to the north east being defended by a massive barbican type outwork. An earlier phase shows a smaller elipticle defence enclosed within. Only discovered in 1951 and surveyed in 1971.
Gerald of Wales is said to have written that Merlin lived in a cave on the lower slopes of the hill, later it served as his tomb.
WA2124 Dryslwyn Castle (Welsh: Castell y Drysllwyn)
Was an important Welsh built fortress from the 1220s, which changed hands many times during the Anglo Welsh conflicts during the Middle Ages. The remains of the castle overlooks the Tywi Valley. It likely replaced an older hillfort due to its strategic river position. While no evidence exists, the hillfort's location aligns with typical hillfort criteria.
The 19th-century Paxton Tower stands opposite, a monument to Wellington.

    What do I think about the boulder? I think it's a mistake to regard such funerary monoliths as markers of burials as we do today, but rather memorialize the ancestor whose remains may have been deposed in a different manner.

      Thanks for your comment, I tend to agree, I think the spirit of an ancestor may be housed in a stone and venerated as such, but we can't really say for sure.

    • @philipdavid7558
      @philipdavid7558 2 місяці тому

      We can say with near certainty. There are three islands in the Vanatu archipelago (aka "New Hebrides") that have living tribes that build such megaliths. The spirits of the ancestors are said to live around them (Layard, 1942 / Burenhult, 1992). They are dancing grounds. The spirits speak through sound of the drums.

    Another totally shattered structure and no doubt zero explanation as to why this is. As like so many others, the debris field looks like it is laid to the west. If that is correct then it just smacks of more evidence for an event that happened 1500yrs ago and still isnt recognised by this country!!!! Thats the english for you, that have hidden what we, the Khumry are!

    Any so called 'Motte and Bailey' castles should be considered as the Normans building a fortification on top of an ancient man made ceremonial hill and a strong clue to look for a nearby stone/timber circle from the Neolithic age.

    • @DronescapingBritain
      @DronescapingBritain 6 місяців тому

      Or perhaps earlier than Norman! so I hear a whisper that many so called Motte and Baileys in west Wales may not be what they seem! There are people looking into it! Thanks for your input!

    This is a common shape of pre Iron age burials, they are Burial Cists and would have been covered with large capstones and a Mound of Earth, this was probably destroyed by the Normans who often took stones from these burials to build their Mottes. There is a similar one at Carn giwc near Coity Bridgend which has numerous Burials and small stone circles, many of the these have had their Mounds removed and the stones were used by the Normans to build Coity Castle, there are Hundreds of Neolithic sites on Sarn Hirwaun Coity and Pencoed Commons in a line of about Two Miles. just off the M4 at Parc Prison. there are also Roman Forts and Bronze age Smelting in the area. Please take a look Cadw do not give a Toss about Wales they are more in touch with English Heritage. diolch yn fawr i ti, nos da

    Hi,why do we call them hillforts,this is an anglo saxon word for them.they are 1000s of years old,many times repurposed like into opidums,fortified place the saxons took that word to describe it.i think they may be Burys,as this name seems to be used alot.each had a purpose like animals,crops etc.if you raise the water levels say 50m or so the valleys become saturated,no place to live,also did you notice how many are shio shaped with a stern and prow. I want to know whats inside them.cheers

    • @DronescapingBritain
      @DronescapingBritain 7 місяців тому

      Thanks for your reply. Yes that's an interesting point. 'Hillfort' is a designated term used by Archaeologists but there are many 'sub categories'. 'Defended Settlements' is often used, You have to bear in mind this is Wales or to give it's official name, Cymru. The usual names for 'Hillforts' are 'Pen Y Gaer' or 'Bryn Y Gaer' which means 'Fort on the headland or on the hill. 'The word 'Bury' (Old ruins or suchlike) is an Anglo Saxon word so it would not have been appropriate in a Welsh speaking land, Ship shaped forts are common in this area if you watch the whole series you will see how accessible to the Sea most of these monuments are, so you may have something there. But largely most 'Hillforts around here form a classic Pear Shaped configuration, incidentally Hillforts that crown a high promontory can be called 'Promontory Forts' or 'Contour Forts' we do explain the difference within the episodes. Pen Dinas in Penparcau, Aberystwyth is currently under study and they have found the southern fort has a Bronze Age Barrow inside, which is absolutely densely populated with building hollows and in some cases but no all, this seems to be the pattern. People lived there they were towns, villages the Welsh word 'Dinas' signifies 'Walled City'. Other monuments may have been more seasonal, perhaps meeting places or markets or perhaps ritual venues. Many 'Hillforts' seem to cherish the older Bronze Age Barrows which are often enclosed within. The valley floors were harsh as you say often wet, why did they choose to live high? Safety, Malaria and other disease in the wet lowlands, the need to keep as much sun and daylight on the thatched rooves as possible. I think there was more water about but I don't go with Robert Langham's prehistoric flooding theory. Here in Wales, it rains a lot and there steep hills, mountains, valleys and gully's, water put simply will rush to the nearest exit often in raging torrents , everywhere around here and quickly heads for the sea. It doesn't hang about when the weather dries up.

    I've long been convinced that there are ancient alignments in Britain, especially in the west. I'm from the Ayrshire coast in Scotland and have OS maps covered in pencil drawn straight lines that link sites. Two or three sites on a line could be coincidence but four or five is beyond the realms of chance. Keep your eye out for more as I'd love to know if you find more. And what were they used for? Navigation? Or for ownership? I reckon the answers are still out there to be found.

  • @ThunderboltWisdom

    Good video. The possible "altar stone" is the only truly worked stone on the site so you might have something there. Also, I liked the comparisons to other sites, these things weren't built in isolation so it's good to open one's gaze and look for similarities. Happy stone bothering for the future.👍
