I had been a YTT student in 1978/80 and remember those years as the best I had in my youth, so sad that I had to leave Australia in late 1980. But music is still part of my life, and still, have high hopes.. :)
Great words, "you do not sexaulize children" it's a shame producers these days don't get it.
Very true. That statement got my attention too.
You do not sexualise them, but the world is such a hot mess today. It is very sad.
Yes, and the dance moves they taught them were much more appropriate too. Johnny Young deserves a lot of respect for that attitude.
They have questions on their minds about
No comment from Ben McCormick but he did want to know which kids were pashing - creep
OMG i loved that show, never missed it, love to have another YTT again. Johnny Young was just the most perfect host ever.
It did come back. Did you miss it somehow? Was hosted by Rob Mills in 2012 on channel 10.
farronfox oh yes i did see that...but it wasn't quite the same as it was with John Young. I should see if i can find some with Rob Mills and have a recap. :)
+Lorretta Lewis the 2012 version only lasted one year but I remember watching it every time it was on and loving it. It's not just the older generation who loved YTT, it's also the younger generation who enjoy it (mainly the 2012 one). It's a shame it only lasted one season because it was a really good, decent, feel good show for families and most stuff that is on tv these days are crap and not family friendly
I think ACA did a great job of this story......but there was so much more to share....could be a 1 hour show!
Joey Perrone seems to have not aged since 1982!!!
Johnny Young is the nicest man
Who got deported from the Philippines for investing in and helping to run a scam medical clinic.
Awww. This was amazing. I love this clip. Thanks for the upload. TV isn't the same anymore. :(
I watched it from the mid 70s..
Till it stopped in 88'
I left Australia in 1997 october, i was 17years old. watched saturday nights ytt loved the show and at the moment i am following the past and the things i missed. Thanks to tecnolojics appliances that keep us still seeing each other or what we have missed or whats on. Miss Australia but i am still following from internet.
How the bloody hell does Johnny Bowles NOT AGE??!! WTF? The bastard is gorgeous!! 😜
I don't think I ever missed a show. I wouldn't go out on a Saturday night until YTT was finished. I wasn't happy when they changed the time slot to Sunday.
Loved this show in the 80s... my sister and i always watched when we were teens... my faves were beven and dannii... johnny was a awesome choice for the host
Geez I wish I was around then. To see the great Australian shows shape Australian TV. Countdown, ytt, neighbours, etc. I was born in 96 and I really wish I was born earlier to be able to have watched all the amazing TV shows especially ytt and countdown. I love music. I've been obsessed watching clips of ytt and countdown just wishing I was around back then to enjoy it.
Rodney - I'll watch old Aussie TV with you anytime!
Rodney Bailey: It was a really well-produced show which had excellent young vocalists, most of whom went onto huge careers. No egos (certainly not in the beginning), no scandal or anything like that, just good, clean entertainment. I was 6 when it debuted, so grew up with it and remember Dannii Minogue, Tina Arena, Sally Boyden, Debra Byrne and Jamie Redfern before they were stars. Some of the later production numbers were cheesy, but it WAS the 1980s!! (I personally loved Vikki Broughton, Nicole Cooper, Jane Scali, Karen Knowles and Julie Ryalls!!)
Need another show like YOUNG TALENT TIME for your young kids today please bring joy go our young ones again
It did come back. Did you miss it somehow? Was hosted by Rob Mills in 2012 on channel 10.
But it was done differently and not the same format - it was more like a competition and not a "show"; I think if they had made it more like before it might have been more successful and still be on. I thought Rob Mills was a good choice of host too. But hey, what can you do?
8:44 Expo 88. I was there that night, walking past when the show was on. I was 7 years old. And we climbed over a fence to get a look at it. It was packed. They were still at the top of their game: can't believe the show was cancelled in 88!!
yeah weird aye
The success of the show depended so much on the character of Johnnie Young. Long before there was much public sensibility about the exploitation and possible abuse of performing children, Johnnie Young set standards where children were treated with the greatest respect. He was genuine, loving, caring and encouraging. And the success of those young people really did him proud.
How about little Courtney Compagnino? Johnny Young was the perfect choice for a host. Endless memories!
Courtney was very talented and sang very well, she is one of the ex team members who established a career outside the music industry.
Went to primary school with Joey. He was right. Copped a lot of shit.
its called jealousy
Those students were jealous, Joe Perrone was talent plus, excellent singer, dancer and actor.
Absolutely loved Young Talent Time and always wished l could have been a part of the team.😟
classic show john young an aussie ledgend!
I loved YTT it was a family show I watched it with my Nana & Mum also sometimes my cousins I was there to the end .Thankyou Mr Jonny Young you had so much talent that you help other great performs learn the rope's also you looked out for them going to the trouble to change unsuitable words to more age approbate I really Admire & respect you and let's not for get you are a legion on your own Thank you for sharing my weekends and giving us a lovely family night together watching YTT bless you and all the stars of the show & the contestant.
And no mention about Vicky Broughton either
I don't think she has been involved in ANY reunions.........she went underground....
I noticed that too. She had such a beautiful voice.
Watching with family. Miss the show.miss my family.
I can't comprehend so much talent from anyone under 12.
Love a YTT reunion, but always sad my two favourites (Karen Dunkerton and Micheal Campbell) are often absent.
There was 40 team members not 42.
Jane Scali was 12 not 8 when Young Talent Time started.
Creepy that the host from a current affair was charged with engaging in under age porn
Love this story, so many wonderful memories. It's such a shame that young people will never experience this, so glad I was around in this era. Also, very, very interesting that YTT was never about creating stars or celebrity yet the artists that became 'famous' have been so for decades!!
I can name a few pop starts who would have really been good on YTT if it continued, Delta Goodren, Jess Mauboy, Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Human Nature, Darren Hayes, even love him or hate him Justin Bieber - he sings beautifully.
It’s now 2024 after finding this, JYTT, well that’s a trip down memory lane, remembering back it was a Saturday night must watch show, my daughter a toddler then and we use to have a sing a long together. I remember that it was followed on by “hey hey it’s Saturday night” with Daryl Summers, life seems so much easier then, those were the days.
I so glad to see this and that I could see my great uncle (johnny young) again
i have every young talent time ever made from the first to the last show and even most of there live preformances
would you be willing to share them online so this piece of Australian history is not lost for good. The studio used to dub over them, and not many of us had the good fortune to own video cassette recorders, (vcr's) back then to conserve this piece history.
Not "There live performances", rather, "their live performances!"
@@neilforbes416 - How puerile... there is always one grammar Nazi... Pathetic.
Better to have someone out there to keep watch, or else the English language goes down the toilet.
@@neilforbes416 - Oh yeah.. you're living the dream, bro.. saving the English language one UA-cam comment at a time *eyeroll* LMFAO!!
Ben McCormick would've loved doing this story about Young Talent.
never misst a show now its 2019 omg time has gone
Good old memories... :')
It was great to see them sign off with their signature rendition of "All My Loving" at the finish. Years after the original show was cancelled it was unsuccessfully revived in a more modern format. It flopped after only a few episodes, and one thing that I noticed during this unsuccessful revival was that they didn't sing "All My Loving" at the finish. It was no wonder that the modern version flopped.
The problem with the revival is that they put it up against The X Factor
Vikki Broughton my fav of the bunch. Need more about her
I LOVED Young Talent Time!!! It was an institution to me so much that I used to tape it on my VCR if I was going out on a Saturday Night. Part of my childhood.
The thing is... they DID sexualize them because the costumes became so sexy on the girls! and most of the songs were love songs, plus they were doing high kicks... skirts flying up, and sexy dance moves, lots of make up and wild hair do's... they in no way kept it innocent.
how about the contestants from the 70's .None of us have any memories.
I agree - unfortunately all the footage from the late 70's got lost.......... I have old video's but the quality is poor....One day I'll manage to get them onto dvd and then be able to upload them to youtube
Debbie Neat please consider doing these now. The Australian television archive has warned (this year 2017) that time is running out to preserve VHS/beta. Please contact them, they might be able to assist you with the preservation/transfer. If they charge, and you need help I'm sure a go fund me page woukd attract financial help. So much was lost, your tapes woukd be a gift to the nation and all us fans. Please act with haste, I'd hate the episodes you have to be lost forever. I've dug up their info for you : www.austvarchive.com I am not affiliated with them in anyway just a fan of their work.
You just can't have it the same now
Natalie Miller was my pen friend for a while.
😂
I have the natalie/ vince duet vinyl.
Mine too 🤣
@@paulwilson9281 me too. I gave Natalie the bow earrings she is wearing on the cover of the vinyl for her birthday 🙂
What happened to Debbie Byrne
Jamie Redfern put that show on the map, sorry but if not for him there probably wouldn't be a fifty year anniversary. Where is he here?!
"is it true she wanted I sing 'like a virgin' and you didn't let her?" HAHA love Dannii Xx Wanted to see Vince Del Tito in this :-(
It was Reworded Especially for Dannii: Hence the Song, 'Like A Surgeon'.
loved that show so much
Love this show loved all them they were awesome and it was the best show for all family to watch and love of all ages both young old grand parents great great grand parents .💖♥️💝💘🙏
ok here is the original line up of YTT as of April 1971 Jane Scarli (11) Jamie Redfern (14) Rod Kirkham (15) Debra (Debbie) Byrne (14) Phil (Phillip) Gould (14) the first original group members to leave was Jamie Redfern in 1972 followed by Rod Kirkham in 1973 Vikki Broughton 1973 (first act to be signed) Phillip Gould 1975 (but returned stayed until 1976) Debra (debbie) Byrne 1975 Jane Scali 1976
There was Vikki Broughton, 16, Rod Kirkham, 16, Debra Byrne 14, Phillip Gould 14, Jamie Redfern 14 and Jane Scali 12 who were the originals, later in 1971 Greg Mills and Julie Ryles (sadly she died in 2011), both 14 joined the show. Trevor Hindmarsh (the other blonde haired team member), 13, joined in 1972, followed by Sally Boyden, then 8.
It seemed strange that several members were not even acknowledged. Even though they may not have wanted to take part in the reunion, viewers could still have been given an update about them surely?
we never miss it
I love Jane Scali!!
Awwwwww I loved young talent time ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I was a contestant on yet in the early days. Is there ny chance of getting footage?
😱 Don’t sing together talk about everyone of Key 😀
Nicole cooper ? I thought it was little patti.
i wish something could be back on again
Love. Love to them all and thanks for the memories.
I have the joey perrone lp.
Vikki Broughton
great memories
That’s so cool
They told me she had passed away , Joey .
The ex team members who sadly passed away were Juanita Coco, 18, Julie Ryles, 53 and Bobby Driessen, 56. I think former music director Ross Burton also passed away tragically.
Anyone know the song in the background at 3:11 ?
Edit: it starts at 3:03 for reference
True colours
True Colours Cindy Lauper
Robyn Conway it starts at 3:03 and goes up to 3:11 that song
❤❤❤❤❤❤
2:10 - Jane Scali was 11 years old! Jamie Redfern, Philip Gould and Debbie(now Debra) Byrne were 14 years old, Vicki Broughton was already 16 years old and Rod Kirkham would turn 16 in October, 1971. 16 years would become the "retirement" age for YTT members in latter years.
Vicky was born on 16th February 1954 so she would have been seventeen at the time jane scarli would have turned twelve in august that year and rod Kirkham born in 1955 had a hit in 1973 with I cant get sunday out of my mind making him the only a one hit wonder out of the three young talent time members who had hits in the early 1970's
Rod Kirkham is only 6 months younger than me. I was born in April, 1955 with Rod being born in October of that year. The first edition of YTT was recorded Friday, 23rd April, 1971 and broadcast by Station ATV-Melbourne the following night, Saturday, 24th April(ANZAC Day Eve). As you say, Vicki was born in February, 1954, she'd have already been too old for YTT as she was already 16 in 1970 when Station HSV-Melbourne finally axed "Brian & The Juniors".
@@neilforbes416 yes that's her correct birth date
n 1958 Naylor moved to Melbourne television station HSV-7, transferring Swallow's Juniors to television where it was renamed Brian and the Juniors. Running until 1969, it provided a stepping stone for performers such as Debra Byrne, Rod Kirkham, Jane Scali, Peter Doyle, Patti Newton, Anne Watt, Vikki Broughton and Jamie Redfern. Naylor also hosted the SSB Adventure Club in the early 1960s with Madeleine Burke,[4] and appeared as a regular on the station's daytime variety program Time For Terry in 1965.
He became HSV-7's chief news presenter in 1970 replacing Geoff Raymond. Naylor switched to GTV-9 in 1978. He presented the Melbourne edition of National Nine News until he retired from this position on 27 November 1998. He was replaced by Peter Hitchener. sadly brian died in the Kinglake bushfires in February 2009
As I understand it, the show was called "Swallows Juniors" at the time the future Mrs Bert Newton, Pattie McGrath was part of the show. It became "Brian & The Juniors" after the Swallows Biscuit Company sponsorship collapsed. Brian Naylor was hosting the show at Station HSV-Melbourne when it was switched to TV from radio. The name change would've occurred in the early 1960s. In its last year, it was axed in 1970, the "Juniors" were all six future Young Talent Timers, Rod Kirkham, Vicki Broughton, Philip Gould, Debbie(now Debra) Byrne, Jamie Redfern and Jane Scali, the line-up also included Jamie's brother, Derek Redfern, and future members, Greg Mills and Trevor Hindmarch. I don't think Julie Ryles was a "Junior". Ryles would partner Greg Mills when she was picked, along with Greg Mills to augment the YTT team around July or August, 1971. They joined the show in time to take part in the shooting of the featurette, "Caravan Holiday", but the featured song, "The Rain, The Park & Other Things"(penned by Kornfeld & Duboff) originally done by The Cowsills, does not have Greg's or Julie's voice as the track was recorded for the first YTT album issued around May or June, 1971 when it was still a 6-member team. Trevor Hindmarch, who'd been a contestant on the show, doing "cute" little Irish folk songs, "Delaney's Donkey" or O'Flaherty's Motor Car" being typical, celebrated his 12th birthday the night YTT debuted on Station ATV-Melbourne. He would be Jamie's replacement on Edition #2 for 1972, with Edition #1 being Jamie's farewell show(he was presented with a small cassette recorder, made by Sony). Trevor's first song on his debut was the Johnny Farnham novelty hit, "Sadie(The Cleaning Lady)" which he duly recorded for the second YTT album in 1972.
King George world respect respected world wide ampire 💯🌹🤗 AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺
No research done here, clearly! Jane Scali was, in fact 11 years old at the time of the show's debut. Rod Kirkham was 15 and would turn 16 in October while Vicki Broughton was already 16, celebrating her birthday in February, 1971. Jamie had not long turned 14(9th April), Debbie had her 14 birthday 10 days earlier and Phil Gould was also 14 when the show debuted on 24th April, 1971.
Neil Forbes that I already know
actully vicki would have been seventeen
jane scali was born on 8th August 1959 three months out of her twelve birthday
@@youtubeviewer7030 Which means she was still 11 years old at the time the first YTT album was issued. She was yet to turn 12.
@@youtubeviewer7030 Vicki Broughton turned 16 in January, 1971. She was born in 1955. She's three months older than I am. The 16 years cut-off date was not a hard-and-fast rule in 1971 as it was the show's first year on air. Indeed Derek Redfern, Greg Mills and Trevor Hindmarch were still in the show as late as 1976's season.
Liberace took Jamie on a tour? That’s a bit of a worry looking back…
Jane Scully had dare you sing the Partridge family so I think I love you you’ve ruined the song you need vocal training
At 2:13 Jane Scali was 11 years old when the show started. It was Sally Boyden who was just 8 years old when she joined in 1973. Goes to show that the researchers on these segments do fuck-all research and get it so badly wrong!
jane scali was born on 8 August 1959 four months away being twelve sally boydon was born on 21 May 1965 and yes she was eight years old
@2:13 jane asked the question to Johnny about her age so it wasn't badly wrong
@@youtubeviewer7030 She was not quite 8 years old when the 1973 TV year started, and YTT came back on air in February, 1973 for that year. I remember Sally actually blurting out, in the middle of a host-set sequence, "I'm 8 now, Johnny!" or words similar. Station NBN-Newcastle was always a couple of months behind Sydney's editions, Sydney got their editions at the same time as Melbourne, but NBN, being regional, had to wait in line to get each edition. So we didn't see Sally's quip until about July or August of 1973.
@@neilforbes416 sally was born on 21 May 1965 she began on YTT when she was seven not eight
@@youtubeviewer7030 I just got through explaining that Sally blurted out in the middle of a host-set sequence that she'd just turned 8. The edition where this happened went to air in May, in Sydney and Melbourne, but would not be seen in Newcastle until about late July or August of 1973.
I begged mum and dad for tickets to see YTT live in concert when they came to my town. I thought it was so cool to see them singing & dancing on stage. Happy memories
