It’s sad and ridiculous that Las Vegas Tears Down Everything Historic. There is plenty of room around that Desert to build New Junk I’d rather have the old stuff than this new Junk!

Its Kinda sad to see something that has been there since almost day one...And they sold out for a stadium. Also with over 1800 rooms what the heck does a demolition company do with all the beds, furniture and stuff? its almost mind blowing to think about all the garbage

I don’t know why they can’t build that stupid stadium where the Hotel Last Frontier used to be, that land has been empty for nearly two decades now. The last of old Vegas falls.

Bob I put that molding up. That was my first union construction job when I moved to vegas. We had to drill holes in the concrete and hammer wooden plugs into the ceiling to secure the molding to. We also put rolled up notes under the center medallions for people to find in the future. Crazy to look at after all these years.

I enry you sir! Being the last person who stayed at the Tropicana Hotel & Casino is quite a thing to do. I'm a former 29 year resident of Las Vegas. I was the last person to do something like this in Las Vegas. I knew they were closing down Fremont Street to make it a walking mall. I went down there in my car and hung around Fremont Street and Las Vegas Blvd. I parked on a nearby street until I noticed they were about to close down Fremont Street. I asked one of the LVMPD officers if I could travel down it one last time. He waved my through. As I turned right onto Fremont Street the LVMPD were closing the street at Las Vegas Blvd. I was the LAST car to drive down the new closed to vehicle traffic. I felt VERY lucky to be the last person to drive there.

I stayed at the Tropicana a few times in the 80"s and then after MGM opened i stayed at the Trop as it was cheaper but i mainly played at MGM and other casinos along the Strip. I have been going to Vegas since the late 70"s, which only consisted of the Hacienda, the Trop, the Marina (which was built into the MGM (i stayed at the MGM in the Marina section.) Ever since Vegas has unthemed most of the current casinos, or imploded great Hotels like The Dunes, Riviera, Desert Inn, Stardust etc., i rarely visit Vegas anymore. Too expensive now. But i still have memories of Vegas as it was, including the Trop, and that stained glass ceiling overlooking the Trop Casino.

It's too bad that you couldn't acquire a set of the Tropicana letters off the side of the building. That would be something worth preserving. It's just sad that everyone keeps trying to be restart HISTORY. Once even sadder is that they're building a baseball park for a baseball team that the fans and even the team doesn't want to move it's just a stupid owner.

Thank you so much for doing this. I've enjoyed your thorough explorations and I've subscribed. My wife and I often spend Christmas in Vegas (from Phoenix) because our families are scattered turds. But it's been at Westgate, later Bally's/Horseshoe. We married in LV and love the history. On a curious whim, I chose Tropicana this past December, not knowing any of this. Really just for the change of being on that end of the strip and I'd walked through the Trop before. But when we checked in we learned of the impending closure. The staff, employed by Doubletree, hadn't even been told when yet. We not only got a great rate, she bumped us up to a suite near the top of the Club Tower. It had a separate living room with a bar, a bedroom and huge bath area. Also, and this made this hotel so special - a set of protruding Bay windows in each room, ours' overlooking McCarren. Beautiful, quiet room. But as you observed, the mood was very somber. On our way to the room we met a housekeeper carrying towels, probably in her late 50's and she told us she had never worked anywhere else. Tropicana was her whole life. I worked in hotels as Guest Services/Concierge for years after college. I know what it is to believe in your property and do anything within reason for your guests. I also know the lies, omissions, betrayal of management or ownership changes, and destructive aquisitions. The walk along that long Trop corridor back was the same in December - a neglected, empty, dying place. I now understand the original cabana rooms were already closed. I'm so glad we had that experience but it was so depressing it also ruined our holiday. Other than riding the NY NY rollercoaster, we just stayed in the Tropicana getting hammered, talking to staff. I tipped far far more than I should have, much like you splurging on that room. Watching the videos of the demolition has been jarring because that would have been our new Christmas choice. I lived in the Bay Area for years and I hate the f'n A's. They aren't going to missed there. I still have my key cards somewhere but I wish I remembered what room # so I could look at that gutted shell and see which concrete frame we spent our Christmas in - and Tropicana's last Christmas. I have a vague idea. There are so many horrid, dumpy hotel/casinos in LV, this isn't right. And now the rumors finances aren't yet secured for the stadium, the A's are demanding an absurd number of Away Games and this surprise aquistion of cash strapped Bally's. So, instead of views, a comedy club, stained glass, tropical motif with pools and a water fall, be prepared for this to be hot, dusty dirt for years like the Stardust lot, a giant parking lot like Riviera is, or an unfinished eyesore Founainbleau lingered as. BTW, there is history here in victims of the Country Music Festival massacre jumping fences and barriers desperate to reach Tropicana, where staff selflessly cared for them with blankets, pillows, medical attention, and safety in their main ballroom on that side. All while not knowing where the shooter or shooters were (Mandalay Bay). Officers down on the sidewalk outside. Google for pictures, it's shocking. The property and staff deserved a bit more reverence here. Anyway, your last night of celebration there just became ours'. Thanks for taking us along.

More so one that featured in James Bond and Elvis movies from the era; is a real tragedy for posterity.

If people actually cared to visit the place more often in recent years: its fate undoubtedly would have been different now, would it?
Flamingo, Caesars Palace and Golden Nugget still draw heavy foot traffic and they're vintage Vegas, so it isn't that people are conspiring to destroy all of vintage Vegas. It's that other places like the Tropicana fell out of favor and hardly anyone cared to visit anymore and, thus, their fates were sealed.

Bob I really thank you for sharing this time with us. It truly was a sad ending for such a nice place. I hate Baseball at times like these. Have a wonderful day.

It's not $600 for the overnight stay, they expect you to treat it more like àn all you can eat buffet as they expect you to take over 600 in "souvenirs" as in practically gut the room to the studs as many folks will

Museum may take it, it's just a matter of costs and upkeep if it were to be reinstalled in a museum. There's articles about the glass going back 5 years. Hope it gets saved. 👍

So the Oakland A's are building a spring training facility? I mean... When I lived out in Vegas... The rule was there were no professional sports teams allowed in Nevada due to potential influence. AFAIC, there are still no real sports teams in Vegas other than UNLV.

@@dethangelsshadow1722 the Oakland Raiders have already moved there. The Oakland A’s are moving once their new stadium gets built at the site of this hotel.
