My husband and I stumbled onto your video in the nick of time! Your suggestions for aligning the magnetic catch side and using the washers to firm up the frame were especially helpful. THANK YOU for making this video!
This video was so helpful! The instructions that came with the door were very hard to follow. With your help the door is now up and working! Thank you!
Great tips -- especially the use of masking tape as a spare pair of hands, and using flatwashers to shim the magnetic catch side so that it's level. Pre-drilling is also highly recommended (without this the self-tapping screws will wobble all over and fall out. My model was the "Milano", which is comparable to the Siera except you provide the measurements and the factory does the cutting. If you're not confident of your measurements, go with the Sierra model. I also recommend that, after installing the screen cassette piece, dry-fitting the top, bottom, and magnetic side pieces before doing ANY drilling / screwing
I agree. Nice job on the video, very nice. I have installed one of these units and wish I had seen your video before doing so. The only real problem I had was in your first step and that was putting in the two little clips correctly. Very important step, Once again, kudos on the well explained video.
Great job 👏👍 Awesome tip on the caulking. The masking tape is a trick I never thought of. I would probably use blue painters tape because I'd worry that the regular masking tape would take off the paint on the moulding.
Great video! I got some washers handy just in case I needed to fill the gap between the side track and door frame. Then I opened the box and they had rubber spacers with sticky backing that you can stick between the side track with magnet strip and the door frame! Genius must have seen your video and put those in there to compensate! Thanks for the tips!
Amazing video!! I just wonder how you got the bottom track on when the side screen track is already attached to the edge of the door frame . How did you go underneath it ? The bottom track was already attached to the frame of the door in this video. Did it just slide under the right side track?
This is ideal for the door on our new second story balcony. The carpenter replaced a window with a door , but there isn't enough space for the traditional hinged screen door and that screen that you split to walk out just doesn't seem to long lasting. I will be installing one of these in the spring.
Very clear explanation of install process. You should license it to Genius! That would be genius! Ha, too bad manufacturers don’t have such clear videos. New subscriber.
The pro tips are great: 1/8" offset of the clips to allow clips to rock and lock; washer spacers to compensate for irregular door frame to ensure full mating of magnetic strips; and filler strip to meet height limits. All nice stuff to know BEFORE I get started. I've got much more confidence to proceed with this project now. Genius should just include this tutorial in their manual.
Great video! The only thing I noticed is when installing the side rail, it is supposed to go behind (to the left of) and over the bottom guide rail (where you see the flanges of the side rail in front and behind the bottom guide rail), which I think you did but just didn't mention. ALSO, and more importantly, the top of the side rail is supposed to be slid INTO the top guide rail, from an angle, to where it's on the INSIDE of the top guide rail flanges (so you won't see the side rail at the top, only the top guide rail). It looked to me like you put the side rail behind (to the left) of the top guide rail which also left a space at the top. Just an FYI for others. Thanks for the great video!
Good video. Just remember to leave enough room for the door handle. If you mount it too close and close the door (or the wind does it for you) it will damage it.
Wonderful and awesome video A question please If the bottom of my door is not fair and has a slope what should one do Should I install a shim ! If then how to measure it ?? Any other option ?? Thank you
The track that the door rides in will have to be vertical, so yes you will have to make some sort of shim to level out your frame. I would start by cutting a piece of wood to the width of the door frame and then sanding or planing down one side until you hit level. Then using screws and possibly construction adhesive secure the new bottom plate in place.
Thank You for the great video and information. You made this look simple with no extra words. Easy to understand. Could You tell me how wide, And how far the magnet plate sticks out from the door frame? I retired to Central America ( Panama ) and my metal door frame is different then Yours. My door handle assembly may cause a problem. Again Thank You.
I thought the same thing when I installed mine. We haven't had an issue yet but with our house you have to step up about 6 inches to come in the front door. If the base of the door was more flush with the ground and not as much of a step I could definitely see an issue.
I'm looking for some type of screen door like this that easy to open & close for my cottage. I'm not sure this one would be a good option because every time I pop in & out of the door in my wheelchair I'd be apt to bend the bottom track. Might have to go with something like the magnetic screen doors but they don't look like they close along the bottom. We have a lot of mosquitoes so they would just enter there. Do you have any suggestions for something that would be good?
Your best bet may be a swinging type door with an auto-closer, something similar to this: amzn.to/2vm50rj The track on this door would be very hard, if not impossible to get a wheelchair over and the wheels may over time damage the track.
Great video, great tips. I have to ask though, do you find yourself having to step over the bottom slide? It looked like it sat close to an inch above the threshold making it easy for any visitors that might not be familiar with it to trip going in or out. Thanks for the video.
It would also be easy to bend the track if you rolled a hand truck over it bringing in a refrigerator. He does a nice job explaining the installation but I don't like that lower track.
I haven't had an issue tripping on the lower track but I see your point about rolling a dolly over it. If I was bringing something large in like that I would come in through another door, but I realize that other people may not have that option. When we rolled a upright grand piano through the back door it had to go over the track for our slider. I put a 2x6 on either side so it rolled over the wood and didn't contact the track, which someone could do with this track as well if they didn't have any other option.
i like these slider screen doors only one thing that bugs me is the bottom track is too high and people can trip and when moving you cant use hand truck
+Dustin Draper it may work, but I would think you would be a pain to close. They start retracting as soon as you let go of them unless they're attached to something so getting them together it would be a hassle.
I have the exact same kit. Did your kit come with three mounting clips? Mine did. You mounted two and the instructions only mention two but I have an extra one for some reason.
Great video. That aluminum base bar that you did not install, is that in the case that the bottom of my door frame is slightly sloped and not flat like yours was? It's purpose is to provide a flat surface to screw the bottom track into?
The aluminum bar is for support to protect the bottom guard rail and for aesthetic purposes. There are shams included in the kit if you have a slanted threshold.
+Christina Stamey I've heard from several people about parts that are included now that weren't when I purchased mine. Glad to hear the company noticed some of the issues and corrected them.
HI, I'm wondering how your door is doing these days? I just saw another video with a guy who installed the same door and he was saying the door is not all that great because the screen gets caught when it retracts to quickly. Is this so?
It's still working well. The re-tractor has a dampener in it so it doesn't slam open. If you release it and let it open on it's own it works great, if you try to push it open you can push it faster than the re-tractor and that can cause it to bunch up.
It took a while for the impatient people in my house to listen to me when I told them to just open it and let go. After having it bunch up on them a few times they realized it opens itself slowly and without bunching up if you just let go of it once started. No slamming open like they expected.
I havn't had an issue, but my door threshold isn't flush with the ground so I already had to step up a few inches to clear the door. It may be different if your threshold is flush with the ground.
this screen would be great except my dog learned how to press the screen with his nose, releasing the door from the magnet. Seems like the magnet needs to be more powerful. Any suggestions?
@@123bluespinner Thanks for that idea! Don't have a dog, but have a young male cat that has tried to run through another screen door -- I don't think the retractable door would hold! Maybe the slam of the retracting screen will give the rabbits and birds enough warning! :) :)
I purchased one of these from Lowes. It did not operate smoothly from the get-go and after a few days it started coming out of its track. When closed it becomes transparent to people depending on the ambient lighting, so there is a risk of walking into the screen. The metal track on the bottom is also awkward if not dangerous. Not recommended.
i am trying to install the Sierra 100 kit, the top retainer guide does not fit properly, when pushed in by hand it only went in 1/2 way and i had to use a hammer to get it out any suggestions on what to do about this?
If the door frame is too narrow for the track you may have to cut the track shorter. I would recommend using a metal cutting blade on a hack saw and using a guide to keep the cut straight.
Regarding building up the frame: so long as the height of your door is within the specification of the product then you don't need to build up the frame like this guy did. The boot body is retractable and can be adjusted for heights between 78.5 - 80.5 inches (199.39 - 204.47 cm). It took me a while to figure this out since it's not explicitly stated in the instructions and I was about the buy material to build up my door frame. I guess if you door is a lot shorter and outside the product height specifications then yes I guess you would need to build it up.
The retractable doors' bottom track looks like a tripping hazard. Look at the sill. Great job installing but, I would not recommend installing this type of screen door with that sill. I think you are asking for trouble. Not only could someone trip, but if you need to truck in or out of the house, the bottom track will have to be removed.
Has anyone tried to install one of these into a floor that is tile over concrete? Seems to be that drilling into my tile will cause the tile to break. If it were to remain intact wouldn't drilling into the concrete cause the concrete to disintegrate?
Just a FYI....When having to move large furniture(Oversized sofa) or appliances(side by side Fridge) thru this door...the screen door will have to be removed.
I just picked up the Genius screen door kit from Costco. Mine is quite different than this one. Unfortunate, because the instructions on the door I bought are not good. I guess I'll just have to resort to my brain and figure it out. Damn!
Still have it, it's held up well. The only problems I've had with it is the retractor slowed down due to dust getting into the roller, hosing it out fixed it. The other is the magnet closure sometimes pops open if it's extremely windy.
Wow look at all that space taken away, if you have only this one door and move out furniture or a refrigerator you have to disassemble that whole doorway. Otherwise cool screen. Good tutorial help.
You make a good point, I have the option of going through the back sliding door on my house, but if this was the only way to get things in and out it's something to take into consideration.
I made the mistake as using this as my ONLY guide for installing the door since the directions in the kit were clear as mud. Had a lot of left over pieces. Not sure hat they are for since the directions from the company were stupid. A little more detail for us DIY challenged would be great.
ftball1713 You can't get pissed at the guy that made the video. Pretty sure he is not affiliated with the manufacturer in any way. If the instructions were not clear why would you not contact the company that made it ? Usually in the instructions they will give you a 1-800 number to contact for any further information. Never have I read in an instruction booklet,,,, for further information please find a video on UA-cam and go by their directions.
Correct, not associated with the company at all. The company that makes the door has it's own video, I made this one with the few tricks that I found that their video didn't include.... like the washers to straighten the track in an uneven frame.
If you can't get them in at all try using a pair of plyers to open up the clip a tiny (very tiny bit). Then once everything is is up you can tap them closed again using the flat blade of a screw driver and a hammer (gently).
BEST tutorial for this product yet!
Clear, concise and I only had to watch it once.
Cheers for your efforts.
Thank you for the kind words!
I'm an industrious 72 year old lady, and after this video, eager to install the Genius Screen door myself ! Thank you!
Glad to hear it! If you have questions once you get started shoot me a message.
my neighbor (also 72) asked me to install these doors for her, glad she didn't see this video.....lol
Really well done video. Very clear, helpful and full of good tips. No shaky video. Clear and concise. Thank you, sir.

So glad to see that one of your pieces of tape did not go quite as planned because that definitely made it real. LOL! Great vid, thanks.
Great tips -- especially the use of masking tape as a spare pair of hands, and using flatwashers to shim the magnetic catch side so that it's level.

Question: do you have to be carefully moving heavy furniture, say on a dolly, through the door?
Great idea with the washers
Love it! This was very helpful ... Thank you!
Awesome! Glad we could help!
Now you have a door that is narrow by a few inches which will be a problem when you need to bring in our or out big items.
Great video!
The big question I have is: What happens if that screen gets ripped? Can it be replaced?
Good question . But no one answer . 😭
You could also use wood shims cut flush then use caulking to cover the gap
Very good point, I actually wound up using some trim to cover the gap later on.
Nice work 🎉
Thanks 🔥
i like these slider screen doors only one thing that bugs me is the bottom track is too high and people can trip and when moving you cant use hand truck
Do you know if you could put (2) of the screen doors together and use them on double patio doors?
+Dustin Draper it may work, but I would think you would be a pain to close. They start retracting as soon as you let go of them unless they're attached to something so getting them together it would be a hassle.
Dustin, They make a double door kit.

I have the exact same kit. Did your kit come with three mounting clips? Mine did. You mounted two and the instructions only mention two but I have an extra one for some reason.
Strange, mine only came with two. Id you have a third I would definitely use it!
Great video. That aluminum base bar that you did not install, is that in the case that the bottom of my door frame is slightly sloped and not flat like yours was? It's purpose is to provide a flat surface to screw the bottom track into?
It's purpose is to give a slope up to the track, we didn't use it because we didn't have the room to fit it in. Its an optional piece.
I don't understand why someone would someone want to use this piece instead of the spacers provided. What's the benefit?
The aluminum bar is for support to protect the bottom guard rail and for aesthetic purposes. There are shams included in the kit if you have a slanted threshold.
+Christina Stamey I've heard from several people about parts that are included now that weren't when I purchased mine. Glad to hear the company noticed some of the issues and corrected them.

AWSOME Video, thank you
My door opening is 78" long. Will I be able to install this by cutting off half an inch or would that wreck it?
You'll have to find one that will fit a 78 inch height. You cant cut the height down on this model.
Great video.Thanks!
just wondering if the bottom track created any kind of trip hazard????
I havn't had an issue, but my door threshold isn't flush with the ground so I already had to step up a few inches to clear the door. It may be different if your threshold is flush with the ground.

this screen would be great except my dog learned how to press the screen with his nose, releasing the door from the magnet. Seems like the magnet needs to be more powerful. Any suggestions?
There are other screens with a mechanical latch. That might be more what you need.
Get a few rare earth magnets and place in the track side.

My door frame is 78" high is there anything I could do to have this screen door fit?
Good question. Notice how they don't answer on this one? I have the same problem, searching for one that can be shortened.
nice work very helpfull.

You could use a masonry drill for the concrete, there are drills that are made specifically for drilling through tile and ceramic as well.
Is there a minimum width it has to be my door opening is 31"?
There is, this company makes a variety of doors for a variety of widths.
Just a FYI....When having to move large furniture(Oversized sofa) or appliances(side by side Fridge) thru this door...the screen door will have to be removed.
