Thank you very much for this tutorial! My wife and I put a couple of pieces of wood at the bottom just to keep the screen level while drilling the holes in. That way the other person who isn't drilling could concentrate on holding the screen in as close as possible. This might help if you're doing this by yourself too.
Thank you for sharing this tutorial. I just purchased this exact same screen door and am excited to finally leave the doors open in our living room without fear of bringing in flies inside the house. Our door opening is actually 30” inches, but I was told in Home Depot that this door would still work with some minor adjustments. Let’s see, hopefully it does because my favorite feature is how it closes on its own.
Paola Arletty This might sound a little silly, but be careful you don’t accidentally walk through the screendoor when it is in place, Ha ha. It is actually easier to do than you might think. Particularly when you’re not used to having a screen door in the doorway.
Oh my, you’re right! We had the door installed this morning and my brother walked right into it, thankfully gently. However, the screen is now not as taught as I would like. The fabric sort of needs to be re-rolled to remove an annoying wrinkle it has. We actually had to cut 2 inches off the sides of the door to fit into our 30 inch opening, so perhaps this is why the fabric is not stretched as taught 😩 Don’t know how I will get the fabric to stretch more? One significant issue that I've discovered since installing this is that if you have strong airflow through the screen from another open window or door in the house, the force of the air may cause the bottom of the screen to blow out of the lower track. That could be a real problem for some people. It could also eventually cause more serious issues with the screen over time.
Great video and thanks for sharing. I am wondering which big box store you bought this from? I have Anderson's door and would like to install this for my back yard patio door. Thanks!
The threshold angled like that is unsightly and a tripping hazard. I lowered mine so that threshold was much more level and added a filler at the top of the door. I'd also like to findout how to adjust the tension. There seems to be one adjustment point that rotates but on my door thst doesn't seem to increase the tension so the door will open faster. It is very slow now and not because of the dampened at the other end of the door.
@@BrianK586 I agree with you about it being unsightly & think you're lowering the threshold and adding filler at the top was a good idea. Curious how you lowered the threshold in case we do the same. Thanks!
Thanks for creating an extremely helpful and easy to follow video. I have to first figure out which area to measure. 😕 In the meantime, I noticed the comment on strong airflow. That is sometimes the case for me. Do you not recommend this door in that case?
Rita Cory in my experience, If you have strong airflow, it is very likely that the bottom of the screen will be pushed out of the track. It would not be an ideal solution in that case. Having said that, if you are careful and remember to close the opposing windows that enable the flow-through, it reduces the risk of that happening. That's what I try to do. It's frequently windy where I live but I like having the option to have the screen so I just try to keep the airflow to a minimum by closing other windows.
Your comment about there being another version of this door to fit 31 7/8 to 33 15/16” openings is incorrect. That Dimension is the opening for a 32” door one already has on their home. This luminaire retractable screen door will fit either a 32, or 36” door size. In fact, I installed mine yesterday on my 32” doorway with a rough opening of less then 31 7/8” by cutting the top and bottom screen guides as directed in appendix A. One just needs a hacksaw or reciprocating saw. Just thought you would like to know....
Very nice tutorial. I have had my retractable screen for over a year. Today, for some unknown reason, it won't retract - the spring roller inside seems to be broken. I'm wondering if you know if there's someway to reset the spring? There is a grey round thing on the top where the center axis of the spring roller seems to be. Any ideas?
I would recommend drilling each mounting hole and placing its screw prior to drilling the next hole. That way there’s no risk of the holes not aligning.
@@tandbappliance I no longer live in the condo, but after the third year the screen did start binding a bit and was slow to retract. I was never really able to determine the cause of that.
George It does not seem to me that it would be any more of a hazard than a typical threshold for a door. It’s about 2” high on the outside. It has the little ramp on the inside.
Hi, thanks for this video..it's really helpful. I have checked the size of my door fitting and it's 31 n not 32 width. Can this retractable door fit my setting?
This is the video i am looking for as i have just purchased the exact same screen door from Home Depot! Your installed screen door slides from left to right, so if i need to have my screen door sliding from right to left, do i just flip it and installed it upside down?
You said you need 3/4 in door frame molding..I have 1in..will it still work? Also how does this brand compare to LARSON Brisa 36-in x 80-in White Aluminum Frame Retractable Screen Door? Thanks
That would be quite a project which I have not even thought about. But yes, it would require disassembly and not sure how to deal with the spring tension.
No, I don’t suppose you absolutely need to install the sill adapter. However, there would be sort of a trip hazard if you don’t. The bottom track would be sticking up, whereas the sill adapter ramps up to it. It will also add some structural integrity to the bottom track.
Just brought this home. My height opening is 80 inches. The Anderson Luminaire product is 81.5 inches in height and can't be adjusted. Am I missing something????
@@michaelerbreviews Thanks. So the 80 inches is almost irrelevant. I have to build a completely extended frame to fit this thing outside my 80 framing.
@@ralpharonni I don’t know what your existing door frame looks like or how it’s built, but this is fairly standard. It’s an external screen that fits into an 80 inch height.
Mine doesn't bind but I would say it will definitely lag a bit if you attempt to open it too quickly. I do vacuum the track periodically to keep it clean because debris can collect in the track which could cause binding at some future time.

That is what happened with my previous retractable screen door. But it took a year for that to begin happening. I'd contact Andersen immediately and seek their advice or return it to the place of purchase as defective.
What doesn’t make sense? It has to be sloped for it to ramp up to meet the top of the bottom track. If it’s not installed you would have a tripping hazard caused by the bottom screen track.
