This song came out in 2003, so shortly after 9/11. I was only 12 years old when this happened, but I still remember everything about that day. It was a few days after 9/11 when I found out that my cousin that I'm still very close to was getting deployed to the Middle East.
I was 28 years old when this happened. I have such a vivid memory of exactly what I was doing when I saw this on the news. When the second plane hit and we realized it was no accident, I believe that was as scared as I had ever been. Nothing like that had ever happened in my lifetime. Life changed that day, I know that my perception of living in the US changed. We went from a world where as an American you felt completely safe, to an unknown in a matter of hours. I remember being terrified for days after it happened. Life was never the same again after that day.
I'm from Connecticut and was there when 9-11 happened. I didn't know anyone personally who passed in the attacks, but being so close to NYC, we had a bunch of firefighters who went there to help look for survivors in the rubble. Most of them ended up getting sick with cancer, blood clotting disorders, etc... many of those passed away from it. This country lost so many more firefighters after 9-11 from disease than the day itself! My friend and I wanted to do a fundraiser for the NYC firefighters and went to our local firehouse to enlist them in the effort. Just being around them in the coming weeks after 9-11, it inspired me to go to EMT school. I'm a hairdresser, so that was nowhere on my radar before... I just wanted to do something more to help. I have volunteered with the paramedic program at the hospital ever since then. I also met my now-husband because of it! He's an IAFF career firefighter/EMT in a neighboring town. We most likely wouldn't have ever met if it weren't for 9-11. If something good came from that day, we're so glad that was one of them! I've always loved this song. I was never a country music fan until Garth Brooks came on the scene. My best friend introduced him to me in the late '80s. I was well submerged in the genre by the time this song came out. It's my favorite of the 9-11 songs. I don't think I knew Darryl Worley was a military man. My brother and sister were both in the Navy when 9-ll happened. Fortunately, they both made it home safe and sound. One of my friends from high school lost her husband who was in the Army, fighting in Iraq in 2005. She passed a year later from an undetected heart defect... leaving their 3 kids without their mom or dad. This song just brings up so much for me. I can't hear it without getting teary. ♥
I remember when I was about 13 years old, I first saw a plane crashing into the Twin Towers. On the front of the newspaper, at school in my country. It's always heartbreaking to see the stories from that day. Even though it has passed It's been more than 20 years.

The line 'Some went down like heroes in that Pennsylvania field' is very pertinent. They prevented a terrorist attack on the Capitol, and therefore, even more lost lives. Furthermore, the symbolism of the Capitol being attacked would have profound because it's the heart of American politics; the legislature.

DO NOT apologize for getting emotional; it only means that you have a good heart!! 😊 I was also in middle school (6th grade) when those absolute cowards came at our country, our home, our people, in an attempt to destroy us. In true American spirit and fashion it only brought us closer together, made us stronger, let us show the world what we're really made of and capable of in times of tragedy, and angered us enough to cause us to be out for blood until the job was competed even though it took years. I hate to say it, but I genuinely believe that it will take another 9/11-type event to even come close to being anything like united again. I sincerely hope I'm wrong. Totally off topic, but I LOVE that Ringmaster poster in the background. One of my exes had picked Ringmaster as his Joker's card, and someone he knew had the jersey and blanket. As a huge fan myself I went to that guy when I got my taxes back and bought them both. When we spilt I let him keep the jersey and I kept the blanket. 🥰 Whoop whoop! MMFWCL to you!! 🖤💛
I've watched several reactions to this song, and i feel you are the one who had the most "real" reaction to the horror and understanding this song invokes. Unless you have an actual understanding of the US (either by age or by nationality) AT. THE. TIME you won't truly understand how bad and enraging this travisty was.
That song and "Wrong Side of Heaven" by Five Finger Death Punch make me cry every time. "Wrong Side of Heaven" requires watching the official music video to actually catch the true meaning and message though. "Some Gave All" by Billy Ray Cyrus, "If You're Reading This" by Tim McGraw, and "Arlington" by Trace Adkins are all beautiful military themed songs as well. There's another pretty new one by Ole 60 called "21 Guns" that I love. My grandpa was blessed to be honored by 21 guns himself at his graveside funeral service. There's truly nothing like it.

My husband, a lifelong first responder, firefighter and paramedic, has had such anger inside him since 9/11. Survivor's guilt maybe.

Unfortunately I feel that 23 years later we have forgotten. As united as we were afterward today there's more division in this country than ever.
