I Found the 10 Ugliest Thrift Store Items…But Look What I Did With Them!

- Hi, I’m Sherry! In today’s video, I upcycle/repurpose some of the ugliest items that a variety of people found for me in area thrift stores. I asked some friends, Goodwill employees, a store owner, my son and his girlfriend, and even a complete stranger to pick out what they considered to be the ugliest things in the store. Today, in ten DIY projects, I transform an ugly lamp, plexiglass panels, a dark wall plaque, a hand painted sliced spindle, a doll desk, a ceramic scarecrow, an aluminum foil owl, a floral vase, a 1990’s oak light fixture, and a 1970’s looking wall spoon into decor that I would be proud to use in my own home. I’m so curious-would you display any of these items in your home? Please, leave a comment and let me know.
I hope you’ll check out Sarah’s channel. I think you will love her!

This was such a fun video to make. I sure hope you enjoy it! It turns out that people love to pick out ugly things for me to buy, and I love trying to make them pretty!
I absolutely loved the bluebird sconce! Thank you so much
for all the great ideas and inspiration!
I enjoyed this video so much!
I couldn’t think of anything you could do with that warty looking scarecrow but you did and it was actually my second favorite item. I love lanterns so that was my most favorite item! It made me want to find an ugly lamp two!
Thank you so much!
@Canterbury Cottage
I'm totally gobsmacked. You have a very talented, creative mind to have turned every ugly thing into beautiful, useful, homey items. I'm creative too, but quite a few of those things had me thinking you couldn't pull it off. Was I wrong. I would have used everything...this IF I had a home. I had a nasty fall @ a nursing-rehab facility recovering from a near death experience from sepsis, a haven't walked since the accident 7 yrs ago. I live vicariously through channels like yours. I used to be known for my curbside shopping hauls and what I created from othe people's trash. I'm so thankful this video popped up in my feed as I was looking for videos to teach me my newest hobby which is beading and jewelry making. You did such an awesome job that you got a new subbie. I am wondering if you are in my birthstone of Illinois? Evanston was where home was for the first 2 yrs of my life. Again, thanks for such an awesome video. I think I gonna go do some binge watching, to find out what else you've been playing with. 😂
At first I thought the lamp-to-lantern was my favorite & then you made The plexiglass that came out of it look phenomenal! And I love the little doll table to planter! Just love it all! What an eye you have!!!
Again, I’m standing here with my jaw on the floor! I did really like this video and would definitely watch another one. Thank you for your inspiration and teaching us to find beauty in the “ugly duckling.”
Oh, thank you, Deb! I really appreciate your feedback. This was a fun video to make, but I wasn’t sure if people who enjoy watching it.
I enjoyed every minute of this video and your “wizardry “ over the unfortunate “ misfits”. I would watch many more of the “humane rehabilitation “😂 of the unwanted. My favourite? The lamp! Entertaining and educational at the same time. 👏🏼🇨🇦❤️
I agree with everyone Sherry! You always amaze me with your creativity and you have such an eye for turning ordinary things into extraordinary decor. Love all your videos and please do more of thrifty ugly things turned into something to enjoy. The spoon was also my favorite. Thanks for being Authentically you! 😊🙏🏽
I think the “doll desk” is an envelope holder with a place for pens and the drawer for stamps. You always do such a great job!
Oh my!! Great transformations, Sherry! My favorite is the chunky vase and the mushroom plaque! Every time I watch you use printed images I want to say "Use a sponge applicator to sponge some brown or gray ink lightly around the edges to give it a more aged appearance!" I make cards and that's what I do for my vintage styled images! It just adds a little more dimension and frames it! :) Loved this video!!
The Spoon reminded me of a Welsh Love Spoon that a loved one would carve for his sweetheart! I love this the most
I am once again astounded at your creativity! I would definitely use all of those projects in my home!
Hi! All your transformations were terrific. I loved the lamp and the spoon. Please, continue to share thrift store transformations. I really enjoy the uniqueness of all your projects.
Thank you so much, Ana! I do try to be unique, so I really appreciate your comments!
My favorite was the spindle. It was beautiful and I love that you preserved some of the original hand painted details.
The 1st lamp, the plant desk, the blue bird spindle, the spoon( without the ribbon, it hides the pic), and the mushroom pic...those were my faves!!
Absolutely beautiful pieces my favorite was the lamp bace turned into a lantern ❤
So creative! I loved the lantern and the “doll desk” makeover!
I was wondering what you were going to do with the spoon. Beautiful.
Thank you, Mitzi! I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it either. I often start projects by painting the item and just hoping that an idea will come to me! 😜
I would use all of them in my home! You are so, out-of-the-box creative, and such a pleasure to watch. Thanks for sharing these projects on your channel.
I loved the the spoon frame transformation it was definitelymy favorite, but also liked the lantern and the mushroom.
Yep. Love the fern box.
Where do I start? the lamp transformation into a lantern was just brilliant! The IOD transfers on the plexiglass were stunning. The framed owl - pure genius! Personally, I would have any of these in my home. The spoon - OMG the spoon! You did it again!
Oh my goodness, I am in awe of your talent!! I think my favorite is also the wooden spoon along with the beautiful fern artwork you made with the frame. So much fun to watch your transformations!
Yup, the mushroom and owl are my two top favorites. Great ideas and fun!
I am amazed by your creativity. I would not have thought any of these would end up so pretty. Thank you.
The mushroom plaque and spoon were my favs. But I’d put any and all of these in my home! Such creative ideas! Cool challenge too! 😊
I can not pick a favorite. As usual, you hit it out of the park.
I love the fabulous things you create.
The spoon is my favorite project....but then I really like everything you create.
Everything turned out so beautiful! I think my favorites are the spoon and the spindle.
I just love the little wooden pench and the lamp!
The lamp and all the projects you got from it is my very favorite. Great job!
They are all so beautiful. I would use every one of them in my home.
Yes, please! More ugly item videos-they are so inspiring and give such great ideas for things we might find. Love your creativity, Sherry, and everything about you! Congratulations on the 200k subscribers!! No surprise there.
Sherry, I probably have said this before more than once, but you NEVER stop amazing me with your vision and talent!! I only wish I had it to make my thrifting more fun! But, because I don't, I'll get my ideas from you!! Thank you so much for shring your God given talents!!
I love the spoon project and the little house.
Just wanted you to know that I lost track of the number of times I literally said “Wow” during this video. 😮
Wow! That is so sweet, Monica!
Me, too!!
Such amazing transformations, the lamp into a lantern is great. The plexiglass transfers were lovely. And I agree, the spoon is a favorite. Thank you for doing this video and seeing more would be great. 🤗
I think my favorite was the fern. Really cute. Someday I would love to see your “stash.” It must be a treasure trove!
I would love to see more of these videos. The bench with the drawer was my favorite!
You have to be one of the most creative people here on UA-cam! I always enjoy seeing what you come up with even if all projects are not 100% my style. I love your channel so much!
I like the spoon as well. I mirror in the frame would look good as well.
I am blown away by then again. I always am. You make gorgeous decor.
I pick every single one, they’re all beautiful. You have got a great eye for seeing how you can create something new, out of something so ugly. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Have a wonderful week.
You did an amazing job with your transformations . It is so exciting to see how much your channel has grown. Every week is a real treat for all of us. ❤😊
You never cease to amaze me with your transformation ideas! Love all of these!
Absolutly agree , that little Vase was beautiful before. 🤷🏽♀️ and nothing beats that rabbit from another Video a little time ago 🐰
I would use the spoon sconce, and especially the mushroom picture!! ❤
I just love watching your transformations and my favorite was the spindle, unfortunately I was too late, some lucky person had already claimed it. Keep sharing as we continue to enjoy and learn from you.
As always you amaze me with your ideas. I loved the bird house with the picket fence and the spoon. Those items I would put in my own home. ❤
Sherry, You are brilliant! I love the spoon, but I also love the lantern. And yes, I would love to see another video like this one.
One project is better than the other! Great job.
I have a hard time visualizing what things can be, but every once in a while I get a revelation. Lol! When you saw a lantern in that lamp, you were so right. That frame really did look like a mushroom. Great job
Thank you so much, Debra!
Sherry, you hit it out of the ball park. What awesome transformation you did on ugly items. Far too many favorites to give. Yes, I would have many of these cuties in my home.
Your amazing girl!
♥️😊👍👍🌟🌟🌟
Oh, thank you, Shelly!
I loved what you did with the different parts of the lamp. What a fun video! Thank you!
All of these are great! Sherry, you're so creative! I would love to see you do this again!
I loved all of them. You have a very beautiful and lateral way of transforming things. I admire the way you are not afraid to deconstruct to remake and recreate. If I’m feeling “stuck” in my own creative path, I watch your videos amongst others and I get all happy again. The spoon frame is gorgeous. Do you ever put a piece of protective glass or transparent plastic over the picture? Or is it not worth it? Maybe it would make it too heavy..
You have quite lovely craftsperson’s hands, I love the shots of your hands at work! Keep up the amazing crafting, you make so many people happy xxxx🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤😊
The lamp was my favorite! You did the same thing I would have with the plexiglass but I didn't think of turning the frame into a candle.
The "gourd scarecrow" obviously won the ugly item contest because so little could be salvaged.
You are insanely Talented and full of Creativity! So Happy to have found your channel, Thank you
Loved this challenge! The lamp projects were my favorites.
I loved these projects! Bravo Sherry!! They’re all cute! Yes more of these please, you have a fantastic creative gift 🙌🏼💕.
my favorite is the box that held the spoon and also the spoon.
You have such brilliant and creative ideas - every project ended up looking beautiful.
What an ingenious mind you have for crafting items I wish I had. Can't wait until your next project.
Thank you so much, Carol!
Hi Sherry! Your transformations of all that thrift stuff was really impressive. You made some really nice things. I enjoyed watching this one.
❤️💜💚
Would love to see more of these videos! You do a fantastic job getting rid of ugly!🤣
I love this idea of getting strangers to pick your items! Great video
Yes please , more of these types of videos, I have so many ugly items in my stash so I could use your inspiration. Morel mushrooms are my favorite so I’m partial to that plaque.
This was a fun video. Yes, please more like this. My favorite is the plexiglass IOD floral transfer. Great idea for that one. The floral fit the 70's plexiglass. Nicely done
I loved them all. Love to see more videos like this. Very creative and an inspiration to do them myself. Thank you!
Everything came out beautiful, I love how you transformed everything ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Such great transformations! My son forages and grows mushrooms and he would love that mushroom picture. I am sure he would find a place to display it.
When I was a kid, my family would go “mushroom hunting,” and since I was little and low to the ground at that time, I often found some!
@@CanterburyCottage We love to forage. I showed your creation to my son and yep, he LOVES it!
Oh my goodness Sherry these transformations are amazing!! You are theeeee most clever upcycler! Mind blown! I really liked every one of them. Yes yes please do more of these ugly item videos.
I'm still thinking about an old cradle I found at a thrift store. So I love the ideas you come up with every time!!!! How do you do it!
Thank you so much, Robyn! You are always so very kind! I once had a vintage doll bed that I put on top of a shelf and staged with books and a faux plant. Your cradle might be too big for that, but perhaps, you could do something similar. Maybe do something so that it doesn’t rock and turn it into a planter.
You’re such a clever lady! It’s easy to see that you enjoyed the creative challenges you set for yourself in this video. I hope you’ll do more like this. That spoon was adorable, but I was perhaps most surprised by the plexiglass panels transformation. As usual, well done!
Favorites: spindle, mushroom picture, fern box in that order. You can make the darndest things look greaat. That is why I watch you all the time. Good video.
I, too, think the large spoon is my favorite. And yes, I would hang that in my home... Good job on all the challenges...
Thank you so much, Lucy!
I really think you did a great job with all the uglys, but the spindle with the bird was the best. Very good job!
Oh, thank you so much! I really appreciate your feedback!
I just loved everything, but the spoon is my favorite!! You are so talented ❤️
It is truly magical to which u transform all of these projects ❤
Love them all, you are so talented and creative, really like this type of video
Thanks so much 😊
Amazing the things you did with all that ugly to turn them into something beautiful!
Love this video! And the vase looks amazing!! I think you are wonderfully creative and so inspiring!!
Loved the mushroom print and frame
I never comment because I normally watch from my tv, however, I had to go on my IPAD to comment. You are the most creative crafter that I watch. I am always amazed with your transformations, but this time I am like WOW! If I did not see it I would not believe it. You are a crafting genius. I think the ugly spindle was my favorite.
Teresa, that is so sweet of you to go to the extra effort to leave a comment! Thank you so much for those kind comment. I had so much fun making this video, so I am really pleased that you enjoyed it!
That was great. I would love to see another.
Really enjoyed this. Would love to see more ugly transformations! I liked the fern frame the best.
Using the frame separate from the spoon has my 👍. I'd have like to see the spoon separated from the decorative handle. Using the bowl of the spoon with a frame also has my bote. The decorative handle would be great almost by itself in a frame
I loved them all and love your video's like this. My favorite was the little desk..
Loved this concept, and you pulled it off great.i enjoyed it very much.Would like more
You are very creative. Thank you
They all turned out great!
Thanks Sherry great job and everything!
Plexiglass.... beautiful. You might even make them different lengths and make them into wind chimes or put large suction cups on the outside of your slider to hang them as sun-catchers😊
Oh, I love that idea!!!!
I adore the spindle!!!
My favorite were the egg and butterfly transfers
I love your channel. You are so creative! I also share the same passion and love to give a second life to items that would end up either in the thrift store or in the garbage. I rescued several pieces of furniture from a home that I bought (I think the lady was a bit of a hoarder but most items left were broken...). I found this beautiful mahogany table but no legs.... So I used the legs of another piece of furniture that was badly damaged. This was my first furniture flip idea. It turned out very nice and the table is still sitting in my living room!
I love that you combined the best parts from two tables! I have a set of legs in my garage that are waiting for the perfect top!☺️
@@CanterburyCottage thank you so much for making these videos. I am glad I found your channel. It inspired me to restart renovating furniture and items. I recently refinished a metal glass bowl that was scratched. I used chalk paint (white and grey) and used a hummingbird silk stencils for the center part. It looked like an expensive bowl now!
Everything was great you are so clever ☺ ❤
Hi,I have just found your channel and I love it. Your challenges are fantastic. Thank you from Australia.
Amazing transformations! ❤
I love the idea of upcycling ugly stuff from goidwill Sherri!! If anybody can make something ugly beautiful from the thrift store it is you!!❤ I loved the little house shadow box and the transformation of the spoon was amazing!! The fern shadow box was beautiful as well!!❤ You are so creative!!❤ Tfs❤❤ I would add everyobe of these to my home!! The lantern and plexiglass florals were brillant!!
