If this is the budget way, what is the ideal way?
I’d say a gentler approach and time with quality products. I brought one back from the grave. Check out this vid: ua-cam.com/video/Ss7CfT41HzQ/v-deo.html
@@KeepOnWrenching thanks! I'm gonna paint the under area with black extreme chassis paint. Do you restore any of the chrome beneath?
Nah. I’d just sandblast or wire wheel the rust out the under side and then get a can of undercoat spray. Tape off the chrome good…and you’re set. Like this: ua-cam.com/video/kcdxSJe7A14/v-deo.html
@@KeepOnWrenching youre the best bro, thank you so much. Wish I could buy you a beer! Will donate though
@@KeepOnWrenching followed the videos, bought Col. Brassy and got to work. Fenders look amazing. can't believe the amount of rust it took off and how much chrome was still there. It's not show room finish with all the pits but at least it stands out and protected. Thanks again man!
Dad ran an upholstry shop for years, very successfully. And YES I have spent many hours polishing chrome with foil, and it DOES work.
Just polished a similar fender using SOS pads worked great, buffed it with mothers polish, looks great.
SOS pads for the win. Need those around for sure.
That definitely makes for a very good improvement until you can stumble onto another fender that’s in better condition later on
Totally. Works for now.
I use a balled up foil to clean my BQ grill ,works better than a wire brush ... For chrome I have always used Brasso, even for paint finish scratches .
That definitely works!
I’ve used this method with water, and I’ve also used WD40 and that seemed to work well.
You can’t go wrong with WD40.
considering how quick this works, I am okay with the unpleasant sensation.
Wow! I'm a believer! Will try this on my Jeep frame.
Good luck….
Very useful !! Thanks.
Tried this before on a chrome exhaust using Coke instead of water but caused light scratches 😞
Yeah. It’s aggressive. Definitely wouldn’t use this method on nice chrome parts.
It works... did wonders on my truck rims. Obviously it won't take away pits & ripples but the chemical reaction works on rust.. not physical damage of rust.
Works in a pinch!
Great video Brian, always good to learn new ways to restore old bikes. Thank you!
Glad to help
Neat! Thank you for sharing another useful tip.
You’re welcome!
NO ! You will scratch the existing chrome with the rust particles that stick to the aluminum. Much better to cover the part in grease and leave for 2 days, which will soften the rust. Wash off the grease with solvent, then use an aluminum scouring pad, the sort you use to clean pans. This will allow the rust lumps that come off to NOT be forced against the good chrome, hence it will not be dulled in the process.
Have you tried it
It turned out ok.
I have used this on tables and not on deep pitted chrome like this and it takes out rust and leaves a like new mirror finish
nice job! would you think it would be better to dip it in Evaporust for a day first?
That’d take A LOT of evaporust and that stuff isn’t cheap. I think it did a fair job. Minimal effort and very friendly on the budget. It could be buffed and polished a lot more! Better than a kick in the butt as they say. Thanks for watching!
NICE-THANKS-Perhaps try it with vinegar...
Lol. Ugh…vinegar and me don’t mix. ua-cam.com/video/3M4ukPuw-6c/v-deo.html
Still wrenching
Never stop!
No, I won't buy into that but I appreciated the upload.
For the stupid among us, rust is the corrosion of the metal itself, eaten away, gone forever of the applied or surface/base metal.
You cleaned off the rust definitely, and a job well done for light tarnishing and surface applications (Depth of corrosion minimal), but the material has already been sacrificed in such an example before starting.
At that stage one must get it electrically stripped, prepare the metal again removing pits etc. and chrome plate again.
Nice upload for the hobby man Wrench, but for different levels or higher level towards show standards on automotive works, I'm sure you agree for car light surrounds etc. to perk them up, then for sure that'll help revitalize a sharper look.
It works in a pinch.
You Sir have no clue on everything you wrote here. I have been doing this for 30 years. I mainly use 0000 steel wool which doesn’t leave scratches and it completely removes the rust off the chrome. Sure if the chrome is peeling or pitted you will have to get it rechromed but if the chrome is still intact it will shine like brand new again. This has been used for years by motorcycle guys like myself and hot rod guys and they and myself swear by it and it works!
Looks good enough for government work!
Yup. Good enough for junk parts!
