This really brings attention to something I've been banging on about for years. Firstly, you can pass your driving test in the UK at 17. I'm guessing you considered this already, but chose 21 because insurance would literally be impossible at 17. In the end I gave up and bought a 125cc motorbike because it was cheaper to insure. (£1,200 to insure a £1,750 bike). So, even at 21 - this is the situation you were faced with. You had to buy a TERRIBLE car. You had to pay almost THREE times the value of the car for insurance. (Which may have been third party only?) Then there is the issue with post codes. What post code was this insured at? I grew up in a poor area and my insurance was INSANE. That is absolutely insane. What about transparency? Insurance is a LEGAL requirement, and so there are two ways we can address this. Option one is that insurance companies become 100% transparent, and share the details of their algorithms. Like it or not, ultimately the reason for high insurance costs is high claim costs. I had a green 106 back in the day. Great car for a 19 year old soldier. Reliable as hell. Actually one of the best cars I have ever owned...Sold it for 206. Another great car!
Sorry to say but the insurance will be a LOT more than what they were getting. You will have to have a black box but speaking from experience get more miles than you'll need from the start otherwise you'll pay like £500 to top up with 1500 miles. If you can avoid a black box I would say it's worth spending an extra £750 for insurance without a black box. I had the worst experience with a black box. Even if you have to overtake someone and slightly go over the speed limit you'll get a warning for it. You have about 3 or 4 warnings.
My first year was £2400 with a 1.25 fiesta, it also depends on the area mate, I moved round the corner and was forced to pay an extra £600 for the year
Find a 1998 subaru legacy estate 2litre non turbo, for some reason insurance company's see it as a grand parents car. I was paying £160 a month as a named driver on my first car (skoda felicia 1.3) which died after 3 months an I found the subaru for 600quid, thought I was dreaming till I got insurance for £86 a month fully comp on my own 🙈
I'm 21, just bought my first car with admiral as my insurer, it was a 2 litre diesel focus estate (not exciting in the least) and the insurance was only £950 for full comprehensive and no black box.
I'm 22 and have a 1.9TDI MK4 Golf Estate, my insurance (fully comp, with personal use and commuting) was under £700. I think part of the trick is getting cars that people our age typically don't get. A Fiesta ST has to be higher.
@@Racing_Fox I did have a MINI Cooper S as my first car, the renewal for the 2nd year came in and was £1700, so I sold that and got the Golf (which was cheaper than what I sold the MINI for) which was as I say under £700. Bet an MX-5 as a first car is great fun, not sure I could stomach £2600 annually, and they wonder why people our age aren't driving as much...
Also it depends on what area you live (how bad the car crime is) like my first car at 20 was 1.0 Toyota Yaris and i paid 2200 without a black box, and it also depends how new your car is as well

Insurance is hilarious in the UK. I added 10k business miles and declared a stage 1 remap on the same phone call and my fully comp quote went up by 3£40 for the year. I'd love to see someone under 25 trying to avoid getting rodgered by their insurer for this.
True story: I recently passed my test and bought & insured my first car (not my 'first car', but first 'proper car') at the tender age of 37. Insurance for a 1.25l Fiesta was only a few hundred less than the car I wanted, (8th Gen Civic 1.8l 140hp 5dr ~2 grand insurance) so I went for that. Insurance for a 200hp Civic Type R and Focus ST170 was also a few hundred less than the car I wanted and got. Insurance is royally messed up. :D

@@cbflazaro A minority...
Bruno Lazaro I would disagree. I’m here in the states 20 years old with 4 years with my license, and have never gotten a ticket or in an accident. And yet I pay $4000 a year in insurance
@@cbflazaro how about a big fat fuck you, a majority rule should never be based off a minority of people. I am sorry, but insurance in UK is retardedly overpriced, especially for younger people, disgustingly so.
@@jacobshepherd3997 and why should you pay less than me? With 15 years license and 0 claims/accidents?
Reason for high prices are claims and scams. If you think its easy profit, make yourself an insurance company and undercut the 4k quotes for guys your age down to 3k. See if you can make a profit from that.
Like it or not, ultimately the reason for high insurance costs is high claim costs. In the UK for example (where this video is based) a few years ago, over 50% of small car accidents put through a whiplash claim, something that in some countries happens/gets claimed in much less than 1% of accidents.
Stop making silly whiplash claims (and others) and soon insurance costs will go down.

I still do 20 years later. Having someone with 36 years driving experience still knocks it down a couple hundred with some cars
I didn't, when I passed my mum had 9 points, she doubled my quote. So pass.
I do this and luckily I've been able to have 2.0 diesels since i passed at 21

@@dickenscider7328 legally true, however the insurance need to prove the primary driver isnt you which usually they cant be bothered with. You have about 3 or 4 warnings.
lol yeh ok
It's always the weird cars that you wouldn't expect that have low insurance
It drops drastically at 20, my MX5 was £2600 at 19 now 1,100 at 20
@@Racing_Fox I did have a MINI Cooper S as my first car, the renewal for the 2nd year came in and was £1700, so I sold that and got the Golf (which was cheaper than what I sold the MINI for) which was as I say under £700.
