- This is a rip from the B side of the 7" single released by the BBC in 1978 (RESL 58) featuring the Federation March incidental piece as interpreted by the Dudley Simpson Orchestra. The original piece was used in a few episodes as i remember, one i most recall is in the Season 2 episode "Redemption" when Blake, Avon & Jenna are marched through The System by the guards to the interrogation room/cells.
Such an underrated villain theme, I wish it were used more in the show.

My parents bought me the theme tune single for my 8th birthday, used to play both sides regularly. Wish I still had my vinyl collection now :(
I hope this gets reused in a movie or tv show someday. Awesome piece.

Nice to hear this in full, it's ironic that it was written for an episode which didn't have the Federation in it!
According to one of the books it was supposed to synch with the footage of marching, but someone messed around with a metronome on location & put it on the wrong time structure.

Ashworth6 the reason there were no isolated scores was that almost none exist. Nearly all of Dudley Simpson's scores for B7 and DW are now missing.
terrible .... and Look what bbc produces now .. . ..No doubt They wiill look after and preserve their 'Rap battles' tunes . ..but treat a genius like Dudley simpson like scum ....

Wow Never knew this single even existed. The BBC need to release Dudley Simpsons themes for all seasons on proper CD compilations. Don't understand why they didnt include isolated audio tracks for the music on the DVDs, they did it on many of the 80s Dr Who DVD releases.
There were a number of Blake's 7 recording released (at least one special effects album and this single). Some day, perhaps the BBC will rank the series good enough to re-transfer to a higher-definition form and re-release. But, then, perhaps they will turn into Wombles too. Damn good music, too damn obscure.

I’m trying to work out what the main instrument is? Sounds wood - maybe a bassoon, but with slightly metallic like an oboe. Then again - maybe a moog synth sound. Anyone know?
Most likely the Fairlight CMI.. The BBC used the Fairlight extensively in the 70s and 80s, for its impressive Sci-Fi effects. The Fairlight was a true audio sampling instrument which could not only record and store sounds, but could apply numerous effects to those sounds. Kate Bush also used a Fairlight CMI in many of her recordings.
@TheUTubeTeamSucks Nonono, the real reason is that the Liberator got sucked into a time vortex at the end of Terminal and ended up in the 1960s.
Dudley simpson did the best music...Dr who theme was the best ...😛
