When Cgi is used alongside physical props it works damn near flawlessly, I wish more directors knew that

Yes they now made a CGI out of it to see what the real picture used to look like but unfortunately I was so confused that this movie made me so confused this movie made the train crash into the world but do you know what this reminds me of? Yes it was Gordon from Thomas and friends Gordon always crashes into a wall it was the same thing as this!

Makes me wish Thomas and Friends had stuck with the model props,because I look at the props and say to myself”Wow,those look like real trains I could drive.” No matter how toylike they look outside of season 5.
Aside from the incredible miniature effects, the most impressive part is the seamless blend between live action actors and the miniatures. The compositing is seamless. Reminds me of lord of the rings.

This is my favourite scene of the movie, and for good reason. I just adore the fact they used actual models and blended it with cgi, plus some of the details from the real event they incorporated into it.
Fun fact: In the TTTE episode 'A View For Gordon' gordon did the same crash as shown in this video.
Robert Legato and his team deserved the Oscar they won for Best Visual Effects for this film. Melies would've been proud.

They did it in two takes. The first was good, but they didn’t think there was enough debris.
The second take was the final one you see in the film, albeit slowed down and with a cgi backdrop.
This is one of my favorite steam locomotive, because of the locomotive’s details are pretty good. Even the luggage vans.

I like how they digitally added a second luggage van like it had in real life.
But sadly there are a few inaccuracies on the loco itself, mainly the fact the real 721 had an open cab, the overall length of the engine being too short, and the headlamp being moulded into the smokebox door, when it should be above it.
Wow I love how they did that. It was very detailed and realistic!

It actually happened at Gare de Montparnasse. The train was delayed so the drive wanted to make up for it by stopping at the very last minute to impress the passengers. When braking the wheels slipped because of its speed, and as such the brakes were useless. The locomotive smashed into the buffers, onto the platform, leaving the 12 passenger coaches behind. It broke through the glass and landed onto the tram station where one unfortunate lady was killed.. There are some original pictures.

This scene was iconic
GOOD LORD for many years I thought the black box thingy on the left at 3:46 was a shadow of a human.
Anyhow, DAMN did they really put LOTS, and I mean *LOTS* of effort into making the miniatures into this scene, even after 13 years, it's impressive the amount of work and detail went into creating this.
Overall, one of my favorite movies of all time.
But what is the black box thing?

The most similar scene I can think to this is when Amrail 4070 crashed through central station(?) in Chicago in the 1976 film Silver Streak
However, the crash was done using a life size locomotive shell with a truck under it, crashing through the walls

It could be an intended ellipsis, cutting what's not necessary to preserve the action pace.
For example, when a character leaves their flat, you don't have to show them going down the lift or staircase. You can cut from their front door to the building's entrance.
Or maybe it was a discontinuity mistake that only few people can spot. ;)

One person died from this. When the train falls out of the window a person was right under from the window, the train hit him or her killing them instantly. Wrong place, wrong time.

This is based on a real crash and IRL there was no explosion. In fact, afaik, the loco was actually repaired and went back into service afterwards.

Yes. In 1895 In Gare Montparnese (I am sure I spelled that wrong) station in Paris France a express train was coming in too fast because the driver was trying to make up for lost time (They were late) however the brakes failed when they came into the station so the train became a runaway train. The train ran through the buffers at the end. Went across several meters of station concourse and flew out the window killing a woman on the ground.
It was time for Thomas to leave

Can somebody please explain what those stunt-people are running away from - was it a cgi train, an enlarged miniature or a real-sized 'mock-up' train. .In the film 'Silver Streak' a truck was disguised as a train and crashed through a mock-up station with stunt-people running out of the way. If the stunt-people are running away from a cgi train in Hugo then what is moving those tables and boxes out of the way??
bud ekins Did you watch the whole thing? it shows the composite of the miniature in some of those running away shots, so it was a combination of miniature shots and cg, but both would mean the actors were reacting to nothing, I assume any of the tables and boxes that were not shot with the miniature or cg, could have been pulled with wires
VFXProductions Sorry, I wasn't concentrating - my tunnel vision just focused on the model train going through the wall:) As for the other clips - that is one of the most solid looking cgi trains ever!
bud ekins yeah they matched it really well, it's just the smoke that gives it away a bit, I just watched some of the cgi breakdowns and it shows at least one of the shots was a big green block smashing through things
This might able to be converted into a live steam miniature loco, As I believe it ran of a tank of compressed air or steam from a feed pipe, as the cylinders are letting out steam from the pistons, its dummy model for testing ran on a battery, but that could be converted as there was a removable tank cover
