Dark Photos, a new photo documentary series from Dark5, presents this impressive black-and-white photo showing the front part or engine of a steam locomotive tipped over the side of a building, clearly having crashed through a wall. The photo was taken on October 22nd, 1895, at the Gare Montparnasse in Paris, and is commonly referred to as the ‘Montparnasse derailment’...
That photo was taken in 1895 and it still has a greater quality than the photos I take..
1:52 "The firefighter"
you mean the fireman of the locomotive that shovels coal in

😮😮😮😮😮😮😯😯😯
Those are fantastic quality photos for the time they were taken
An episode of the 5th season of Thomas the Tank Engine titled "A Better View For Gordon" was also inspired by this accident.
Your comment actually made me literally LOL
Thomas the dank engine was real...
It was those troublesome trucks
Yo i remember that episode
That's got me nostalgic
...
So that nightmare sequence in *Hugo* was inspired by real events...
Yes
Stev Hussar It certainly was!
Stev Hussar yea... When i watch HUGO.... I be like thinking if it is real but yeah its real
Yup
The train in Hugo also shared the number 721 with its real-life counterpart. I think there's also a reference to the newsstand lady who passed away during the crash scene, but it might be far fetched. The train is seen crashing through a newsstand inside the station, but before it does that there's a woman walking by it on the other side. A man tackles her out of the path of the train and saves her.
Edit: It was some random guy that was saved nevermind. Ignore everything I just said before other than the train number.
That poor Newsstands Lady ;k
It was her time, apparently. ❤️
@@EphemeralProductions What a ridiculous thing to say.
Misha: why?? Actually don't respond to that. You'll probably have some stupid liberal reason that caused you to be "offended". Save it
I love watching this channel when I am all alone in the dark.
Karl Max was a lazy Devil Worshiper
slade tuner Devil worshiper? Marx did not worship Shaitan
It was a _final destination_
No but seriously, death was after the newsstand lady; she was the only one who died and the stand wasn’t even hers
It sucks when not even your stand is strong enough to save you
LeviathanRX the thing at the end of the tracks, 15m of floor and a stone wall didn’t stand a chance u think a wooden stand would
@@TheLuismaBeaTle Was making a JoJo reference but that's cool I guess
Wait, are you telling me the crew survived???
Superflamegameplays everyone but her
Damn I haven’t been here in a long time but you reached 2 mil already congrats my dude
“Well, Gordon, I know you wanted a panoramic view, but this is not the way to achieve it.”
Is that a Thomas the Tank Engine reference?
HUGO CABRE
Too soon man, too soon.
“Well Gordon, I know you wanted a panoramic view, but this is not the way to achieve it.” “Yes sir, sorry sir.”
I found this very interesting after having first seen the photo about 30 years ago as a print at a shop I worked in !
"All you had to do, was apply the damn brakes, Gordon"
And you know that notion just crossed my mind? 🐢
"Sacre Bleu! I did! They failed, Francious"
Lmao
Hi katheryn
Gta
I wonder if the poor lady suffered or went out fast " or in those split seconds did she see it coming " i guess we will never know r.i.p.
think about it this way.. she’d be long since dead by now anyway, right? you can dry up those sympathy tears and get over it now. you’re welcome.
I imagine she heard a smash crash and then her life just went blank
Alright I know no-one asked and this new presentation of Dark 5 is good but I miss the music and written text. You have to be congratulated on always having awesome and different music for every video too. Anyways :)
yeah say goodbye to that. Kinda miss that though
Ya I just started watching his channel after a long break and was disappointed to see the style change, oh well
I like it! 😊 Probably cause I like hearing more than reading I guess.
I like not having to read so i can have a good look at pictures.
@@imallowedmyopinionok2354 yeah i'll have to admit i've had to stop a few in the past to do that. Hey @Dark5 wheres your music channel?
Dark 5 now talking. great man
not to great for me
And that locomotive is.... GORDON!

Very interesting subject. I always wondered what was up with this photograph. Kudos!
I miss the ominous music & text.. it's what made your channel unique..
This scene was inspired for "A better view for Gordon" from Thomas and it was a dream sequence in the movie "Hugo".
Man I was having a good day then Dark5 comes along and makes me sad again
Why would it make you sad?
Same
This channel is amazing
There was also a Thomas the Tank Engine episode inspired by this event.
A better view for Gordon
I remember when this channel received way more views, it's still really good just a little different 😄 Keep it up, I've been here for the last 4 years and I'm not ready to leave 😁
Hugo train crash scene and the Thomas scene with Gordon’s view In real life confirmed lol 😂 xd!
Its
Not funny
The Master Tanker Yeah I agree it’s not a laughing matter
If the train is big and blue lol
Wow I guess Gordon wants to be a bus now
The Hugo train crach inspired the crash from "better view for Gordon" when Gordon crashed through the station wall
These narrated videos are really interesting. The amount of research in your explanations is appreciated. Pretty obvious you know what you're talking about.
well done, as always, and congrats on 2.2 million subs!
PS, the injured "firefighter" if i'm not mistaken was actually the crewman called a "fireman" who feeds coal into the fire.
Yep, in Britain, a "fireman" can either be someone who stokes a fire or puts one out. In the USA, a "fireman" is a "firefighter"; one who stokes a fire is a "stoker"
Love your new Dark5 Docs and Dark5 Photos!!!
I know it's a change from what we know, but I quite enjoy hearing your voice. It has a very nice tone to it, very calming to listen to. Also, I'm quite impressed with your pronunciation of French words, I'm sure my French friends would agree. I for one welcome this change. Keep making these awesome videos, man.
Excellent video! Short, concise, informative, to the point. I was very impressed! Thanks!
gordon: wow that was dum of me
ghost of the engien: ha your one to talk
*applauses* thank you! this was a great video!
I just love you're channel 👍👍
I literally accidentally clicked this as soon as it popped up. Don’t regret it 🤷🏾♂️ .
Fascinating.
Behold, the power of the photograph.
Even back then before social media.
That's the picture simply captioned "Oh shit".
Remember when these uploads were scary.....
@TRUTH FTW pretty sure they kept doing like this forever. Changing suck
I thought the SCP foundation had hired dark5. Good to see he has time between experiments to continue his youtube account. ;D
@Bethesda sucks, but Zerglings still are cute. Agreed.
Nice vídeo man! Congrats from Argentina
I think Thomas & Friends as used this crashed in the episode “Gordon’s View”
Don't forget hugo to
A better viiew for gordon
@@nmuniz2 a better view for gordon
Poor news lady became the news.
This was not unlike the GG-1 electric locomotive #4876 that crashed through the floor of Union Station in Washington, DC in January 1953. However that accident was due to a mechanical failure and design flaw that caused the air brakes on most of the train to fail. The engineer was not at fault and did everything possible to try to stop the train and give warning that the train was out of control. Fortunately no one was killed in that accident. The GG-1 was cut into sections, sent to the PRR Altoona Works, and reassembled and served the railroad for many years afterwards and still exists today.
I miss the days when TTTE actually had accidents based off of real events. This is one of those darker ones that I love. And considering that I'm a veteran Thomas fan, all of this makes scenes. Except this happened to Gordon (minus the coaches). Thomas doesn't have to be in everything. He didn't even had a line in the season five episode.
Hahahaha
Fascinating. Really enjoyed this one.
That year: Lil Boy:MOM THERE IS A TRAIN CRASH!
2019: Me:I hate u Gordon...
Yup, you're right...that's a "dark photo."
Mr. Big : Lean Into It
And then there was trouble. As Gordon approached the new station, neither the driver or fireman could apply his brakes. The driver reduced steam but Gordon was still going too fast.
(Gordon then proceeds to run straight through the station and crash through the wall)
Help me, please!
Damn thats one big ass electric train set! 😂
You make amazing videos 🤘🏼😁
Very nice documentary !! Choo choo 🚂🚋🚃🚋🚃🚋🚃🚋🚃🚋🚃🚋
If thats a derailment id hate to see a crash
Well don't search up, "Snowdon Mountain railway accident"
This looks and feels like a completely different channel...still very interesting...😎👍
Very Cool Doc. Had the CD the day it was released. :)
Look at the resolution of some of those old cameras, crushes most of today's easily
Another great video, excellent French pronunciation. I’ve never understood that pic.
*thomas the tank engine theme blares loudly
There was a accident based in this in the Thomas the tank engine series
Wonderful! Well done!
Excellent video
Watch Thomas and Friends Season 5: A Better View for Gordon. You'll see Gordon crash into the station the same way this engine did
My fav narrarator.
This crash inspired the Thomas episode better view for gordon and the dream scene as part of Hugo in both the novel and movie

35 mph doesn't feel that fast.........until you crash.
well done so engaging thanks
So we finally hear Dark5 speak!
Thank you for the Mr. Big mention
I’m so early that it doesn’t allow me to see the comments.... it feels lonely
Jason Marchant thank you.....
There are HUNDREDS of pictures of this
A very similar accident happened in Dublin in 1900. Thankfully, nobody died.
I have a picture of that train on my dining room wall. Came from Ikea many years ago
The film The Invention of Hugo in 2011 got shortened to just Hugo. I worked for a survey company at the time so I got familiar with the original title and was a little surprised when I saw official trailers the following year just calling it Hugo.
Beautiful film though.
I'm familiar with the photograph and now I know the story behind it.
the same crash that gordon the big blue engine when he crash into the staion in a better view for gordon from thomas the tank engine and friends
Camilo Gomez that episode was based on this crash

"the engine of a steam locomotive"
The Steam Engine IS the Locomotive. They're one and the same thing.
Excellent presentation.
What a great video
What about, "A View For Gordon?
There's a photo of this wreck at the library in Denver Union Station.
The Thomas and Friends episode called A Better View for Gordon was inspired by the 1895 train crash in Paris
I actually had to read that book on error analysis last semester for a physics class. Surprisingly readable for such a dry topic.
I thought for a moment Dark5 was narratoring the video and I got excited...
Hes already have second account only for narrating

Should include a recent photo of the building.
I wonder if they kept the train hanging out of it for tourists..
Huntington, Indiana had a similar incident with a loco actually running down a street......
Poor steam lady.... As a trainfan, this kind of stuff make my heart to break.
I know... The main thing is that there's no injuries... But the immage of that steam loco..... Man! Poor steam lady... 😳
On October 22nd the Paris express train accident after carry 71 passengers the conductor wants go faster the locomotive hit the station building many horse wagons come to rescue and after the last accident in the France
Remember when you were a kid and were disappointed when crashes didn’t go the way you want? This is what you wanted
Dark 5, PLEASE PLEASE go back to the old format with moody music and text instead of narration. I know some people prefer narration but you can keep doing that on dark docs. Please read the comments and see how many of us are really disappointed.
It's so sad, I can't watch this anymore, it's not the same great channel it used to be. Now it's just every other numbers channel. I'm sorry. I understand if it's a financial decision, but to me its just another casualty of utube's third reich business model...
Me too pretty sure ( or i could be wrong ) they will kept be like this forever.
That is SO incredibly freaky! I can't even get my head around that thing coming out all the way up there! And only one unfortunate person...not even on the train....killed. Thankyou Dark.🤔😲💔🤘
I have this as a poster on my wall above my PC xD
This is not the dark5 I have known......... once upon a time, it was darker than my dp
double penetration?
This was on Hugo. Hugo had a nightmare about getting hit by a train.
Ah yes the backstory for "A Better View For Gordon!"
Hey look! Its that one Human Fall Flat level!
I knew I saw that somewhere before, thanks for the reminder!
The driver:*goes fast cuz he late
The train: oh sh*t
good work on this one but shouldn't this video be in your Dark Docs channel instead?
I have a copy of the photo, when I have a bad day it reminds me that someone had a worse day.
Should have been an album cover for Led Zeppelin.
