picked up an 06 legacy sedan about 2 years ago, started getting more comfortable with doing mods like this since it's my first car, being able to see things at night will be amazing
The usdm facelift 07-09 turns on interior lights when you unlock or open doors. The back has the switch to turn that on or off. If you have the screen in the nav it has some more option like no beep upon unlocking or if you don't want interior lights coming on.
Thanks for the video, this mod is a little difficult to understand while reading it from a forum page and with this video it's much easier to understand. I just want to add something; If you take the power from back side dome light's brown wire, you can not close the lights while doors are open, I don't try yet but the power should be taken from the switch itself to control all the light when the switch is in off position. I'll try soon, I hope I won't fry anything :)
Also in our Outback, there is a secondary opaque cover behind the clear cover, apparently to restrict the light output so as to be not too distracting during driving. However, with the new LEDs in there it seems more restrictive than necessary, as the LEDs are not omnidirectional. That opaque cover HAS to go in there for the clear cover to stay in, but, I may try "Dremeling" the opaque cover a bit more open... 🙂
Hmmm.. I have a 2009 Outback and the appropriate door panel light comes on with the dome and map panel lights when I open a door. However, eventually the dome and map panel lights eventually time out (to save the battery if a door is left ajar), BUT, the door panel light does not turn off if the door is left ajar. So, I'm trying to figure out if I can intercept the power to the door panel light via either a time-out circuit for each or triggering the turn off from the map light's auto-turn-off. For the time being I put LED's in the door panel light spots to at least reduce the current draw. Getting to behind the door panel switch (if that turns out to be required) looks like a lot of trim removal... Ugh.
Definitely something to am going to do to my Liberty sedan! Hate that the map lights don't turn on. My other car, a VZ Holden Calais, map lights and rear dome/map lights all turn on when I unlock the car and/or open the doors and with LED's the entire cabin lights up. Hate that my Liberty doesn't do this however so I am going to attempt the same!
Hi! Tried exactly what you did but they got messed up with it in the back. So I removed everything so they were like original. But now the back doesn't want to shine when I open. Does not receive power from the brown cable. Are they a fuse or worse...?
Eh, VERY carefully. Best done on a hot day in the sun, so the plastic is not quite so brittle. Careful heating with a hair dryer works too, but "careful" is the word: A melted cover is as bad as a cracked cover!
Hi! Super useful i really like your tutorial, just one thing, I don't understand why do we have to switch the cables on the small connector, if we inverse the Led bulbs would it not be the same?
Did you put a diode each side as u have black tape on right hand side as we see near the soldering?which looks like you have connected something there?
One of the Japanese importers based in Mississauga, ON. I'm doing a series of videos about what is required to install them ie rewiring headlights etc so check out that video and expect more to come. I was expecting to put them on this weekend but currently the paint on the fenders is more scratched than I would like so I will be repairing that first then install video to come soon.
Hey thanks - here is a link to the bulbs in the map and dome lights. These are the brightest I've used (as you can see) and I've never had an issue with them. I'm adding the link the the description as well. amzn.to/32v79hw The only thing you will find with all of these LED replacement bulbs is they're 1-2mm longer than the normal ones so they are a tight fit but the brightness is worth it.
So far I've not had any problems with bayonet style LED lights in either my Outback or Chevy Tahoe, from Alla Lighting or Auxito (SP?). OTOH I've melted bulbs with plastic bases in the Outback's dome light spot. I've also tested some small LED bulbs (like 194's) and LED light modules and discovered they do not seem to have electronic current limiting. Apparently the limiting is done with a simple resistor. This is quite problematic if your LED's in the bulb are wired in series-parallel to give a total Vf of, say, 10.2 volts. If your battery is at 13v with the engine off, that gives 2.8 volts to drop through the resistor. If, say, the LEDs need 100 mA to be nice and bright, the resistor is 28 ohms, and must dissipate 0.28 watts. The entire bulb is dissipating W = V x A = 1.3 watts. However, if at some point with the engine on the battery voltage rises to 14.7 volts (I've measured that in the Tahoe) and the LED Vf was already being pushed a bit (what seller wants reviews of dim LEDs?) you might have a drop across the resistor of, oh, 4.4 volts. (I assumed Vf only went up another 0.1 volts.) NOW you have 157 mA pumping through the bulb, or 2.38 watts, and that could well cook it if (any combination or singly) ambient temps are high, heat sinking is poor, and/or the bulb is on for an extended time.

Why is it nobody gives a part number on the diodes...
Forgot to note, I did this a while back and it works amazing. Thank you for the video!

Hi, did it work?
@ never touched again :)
@@tugsaykulaksz2029 Thanks for the answer. Just another quick question, do you actually need to use any diodes att all?

on my legacy, the dome light in the back will come on, but not the map lights

Nice thank u-!
I couldn't see where you connect the back cable ?
without the diode?
Link to leds? I have a 05 legacy sedan with no sunroof.

How to remove the plastic cover?

What led’s did you buy for the interior?
Did you put a diode each side as I can see black tape near the right hand side soldering?
Yes he did
Do you have a link to the guide you followed?
How did you lose the tip of your index finger? Ouch!
Where did you get the white interior door lamp covers from?
Door lamp covers are stock
Everything here makes sense except swapping the cables in that connector. I don't see what that does for this
Like said in the video, I didn't invent this one. People who forget to swap those 2 wires all report something blowing somewhere so be warned.
Where did you get the front bumper and grill.?

RP Garage thanks it’s going to look awesome with the jdm parts great job
Does map lights still work with button/switch?
They do, the diodes make it so they function as originally intended
Nice!
@RP Garage What diodes did you use?
these are the ones i used but I'm sure any 12v diode will work: amzn.to/2L6FT16
Nice video ! Can you tell me where you got the led bulbs ? I've tried a few different brands and none of them last a long time.
I’ve used Diode Dynamics brand with no issues, i’ve had their leds in my legacy for 3-4 years now

I used this one - amzn.to/2V7M6zg
Nice for LED junkies, i dont like it! i like the normal candle orange light!
Still can be done without changing for LEDs. It's about triggering the lights to come on.
There are some pretty decent warm white LED's out now.
