    You guys should use the same guitar, or at least very similar guitars when comparing amps. We wanna hear the difference between the 2 amps without the differences in guitars. Like right now I don't know whether the Deluxe is actually darker or its because of your humbucking pickups

    Got the 68 Princeton 8 months ago. Love it. Les Paul sounds so good direct into the amp. Fender Strat... Iconic sound. Tube Reverb is classic. Crank it passed 5 so it starts breaking up nice. Passed 7 and you better be good cuz the whole block will hear you. It's a rock n' roll amp. So anyone disappointed in it, you gotta realize what this amp can do. It's sweet clean, but it also has a rectifier tube in it! I use this amp mic'd up at Church, and it's everything I could ever want for practice, or live performance. For the money... very good pick.

      Is the rectifier tube particular to the Princeton model or do the bigger ones have it as well? I just ordered the twin RI of this line.

    • @noblezada
      @noblezada 8 років тому +1

      Yes. It's particular to this Princeton custom. It's got a single 5AR4 rectifier tube. I'm surprised they didn't crank it in the demo and play some rock riffs through it.

      The custom deluxe has a rectifier tube also. Only the pro reverb and vibrolux in the new 68 models have the SS rectifier.

    Just bought a 66 Bassman, I'm a happy man! I think there's far too many vintage snobs, who will simply overlook the SF just because it's a SF. Still awesome amps.

    I actually prefer the captain's strat tone compared to robs own brand guitar. The strat just sounds so much better, than the ml-1 or whatever Chapman guitar it is.

    I bought a 1970 Silverface Twin Reverb about two months before Fender announced the RI Silverface line, and I have to say, it is the best amp I've ever played. I like to tell my family it's my "spirit amp." I initially purchased it with the intent of restoring and selling it (I got it for a ridiculous price), but after restoring it, I don't think I can sell it. I've named it Gandalf the Silver.

    1967 may have been the summer of love but 1968 was the summer of MC5. As Wayne Kramer said "The summer of love didn't make a stop in Detroit". I have the 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb and I find it more versatile than any of my Vintage Fender amps. Hopefully it will last a good long while despite being a PCB based amp

    Check out 9:20, when he takes the amp off standby.
    That AC blower motor sound you hear kicking in is the '68 DR in IDLE.
    Then check it out at 15:40 when he puts it back in standby, so he can relate the story in peace.
    I'm amazed it didn't go "THUNK".
    Surprisingly, the room mic really picks it up, but the 57 on the amp let's it go.
    Kudos to whoever worked that out, nice job indeed!
    The '68 Fender DR is the noisiest Fender amp ever, but it actually does shine when the ambient noise level covers it up.
    Don't worry about paying retail, found mine on the local Craigs list for less than half of retail.
    Never saw a guy so happy to part with a practically new Fender amp for so little!

    I appreciate that these guys get the value proposition part of buying instruments and gear in general. When they were talking about "is it too much" I kept thinking to myself, "for me, the 68 Deluxe, with an A/B/Y box and a Tubescreamer... is all the amp I will ever need," For other guys, this is too specialized and thus they'd be better served getting a modeller or a few amps, even if they were cheaper amps, so that they could be super-flexible - or it is too specialized in the wrong direction, and maybe if you play hard rock then a Marshall or whatnot might be a better choice..

  • @tjnugent62

    The Iconic Fender tone. Both have a tube rectifier and tube reverb. Both have had the negative feedback loop removed to accept pedals better. I like these amps much more than the Blackface... I used a vintage 68 with a JBL in it on the road for years... It was a workhorse and had stunning clean tone.

    While waiting for my blues jr to be fixed at guitar center, I started playing through a 68 custom princeton reverb out on the sales floor. By the time the Blues Jr was ready, I had already decided to just trade it in for the 68 custom princeton reverb that I was playing. The output transformer makes a world of difference. The blues jr sounds thin compared to the much rounder sound of the princeton even though the princeton has lower wattage.

    Glad to see them revisiting the '68s! I play through an original 68 Super Reverb and was convinced nobody wanted a 68 because it was a silver face. Mine is one of the original silver faces that had the black face circuitry, and my dad bought it for $100 when he was a kid. I'll never get rid of it.

    Hi, Guy. I bought fender american reissue blackface Princeton Reverb from the best music shop Andertons in UK. This is the best AMP in the world, for clean (blues, Jazz, Country, everything!), What is more, if you wanna get the crazy overdriven tone, using you pedal with this AMP, it will below your mind. Think about it, 10inch speaker. The middle range is awesome! Or if you like 412 kind of widely sound. just plug into your Marshall cabinet or Mesa cabinet. Merry Christmas Rob and Captian! Thank you introducing this amp! Cheers!

You guys always do a phenomenal job on the demos and the information on the gear. Love the Cross Over drive, gotta choose that over the eternity. Seems very versatile. Great review. I have been waiting for this one. I spied the new 68 Deluxe sitting back there in one of your reviews last week, and instantly started scouring your channel saying "did I miss one of their vids?". LOL. But alas here it is. I am a big fan of that old school Fender sound. Its what I grew up with. And was sort of perplexed why Fender would make these, because, as Captn has mentioned, it is a sort of dark period in Fender's history. But those early Silverface amps were very close to Blackface spec, and some were very cool going later in to the early 70's as well. For example, many later Silverface Champ and VibroChamp circuits never did change much from their blackface days. So I am glad to see that Fender is really thinking out of the box and making some cool stuff that maybe wont appeal to the larger audience. They did this a few years ago with their Vintage Modified Bandmaster and VM Deluxe amps. Those were a bit unusual of spec, and they were not really accepted by the masses. But I thought they had a great tone that straddled between that vintage and modern line, at a crazy affordable price for a Fender tube amp. I still have the VM Bandmaster and love that thing. I was hoping that these 68's would be more affordable than they are. I think if I were going to spend the money, I would still go for the 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue at this point.

  • @WilhelmDerMann
    @WilhelmDerMann 10 років тому

    Great review guys! I own the '68 ReissueDeluxe model and absolutely love it. I give it a 9.4. It takes an OCD pedal beautifully using Strats. I also own a Blues Junior ( little anemic), and a Blackface '65 Twin Reissue (definitely too much for my bedroom). I can't stop playing this Reissue Silverface. Vintage pure cleand and sweet when dirtied up with a pedal.

  • @Instramark
    @Instramark 10 років тому +1

    Pretty well said Captain about the Silverface series. But, I do know because I was there. I had a 72 Silverface Super Reverb, bought new in 1972 and used it as a full time club amp for 20 years. The quality of these series of amps did not really suffer until Fender started putting master volume controls on them. This new amp, the 68 Deluxe is interesting but not the real deal. The original amps were great when turned up to 6-7 or higher. Of course they were loud and mostly only purposeful in a performance environment. I wish Fender would stop teasing me in using Vintage nomenclature on these OK new amps that are unfortunately, not at all close to what they are alluding to. Having played for almost 50 years, Fender has put me in a place where I just walk by any of their new products when in a store. They play loose and fast with branding. This is a really nice and convincing video showing a certainly acceptability for buying these new Fender Teaser amps, just not for an old purist like me. Thank guys.

    I bought a 68 princeton and sold it. I wish I'd thought about a speaker upgrade. However, I feel that the Deluxe Reverb would have been a better choice for me. I hate how Fender release amps with poor quality speakers. I watched Vaughn Skows Fender Supersonic 22 speaker comparison video on UA-cam. I think it shows just how much a speaker can affect the sound of the amp.

    Captain with a moustache is a dead ringer for Freddy Mercury. I was waiting to hear "Dragon Attack". I get tickled every time he says "Fender". It comes out "Fenduh". Seriously, I really like their videos. Only suggestion I have would be to hear more jams without pedals, cleans and with the amp's natural breakup. Keep the videos coming, guys.

    Rob's Fender Twin being dropped down a flight of stairs and still being operational for the gig is a good story! I wonder why we can never hold onto all these old amps/guitars we have stories about? I guarantee if you ask him about that amp in the story he sold it years ago. We are so stupid about selling gear and then regretting the hell out of it later.

    I don't mean this video particularly but I would love if you guys tested out with the tone rolled back and/treble rolled off on the amp and attempt some jazz because I noticed it is appealed to a jimi hendrix flashy sort of clean but most demos don't always have that warm George benson tone showed off. I agree 100% trade in those Blues JR's and get Princetons! Blues Jr's are good amps but in my opinion need massive modifications to be great. Off the shelf I'll take the Princeton over the junior all day long. This is just my opinion. As well as saying 95% of the tone is the person that plays the guitar and not the guitar.

    Also, i would really like to hear you push these amps into distortion without any pedals as well. To many people, that's the best part of these low wattage Fenders.

    My advice is get the 65 deluxe reverb head and choose your own cab for limitless possibilities the 65 circuit has greater depth and clarity but the head is fairly reasonable cost wise

    Fender should do a demo video for these in B&W with everything like it's in the 50's

      Doh. I guess my idea wouldn't make much sense. Fender has a bunch of 58 reissues, mostly guitars I think.

    I have the Deluxe Reverb reissue...sounds great, but I'd actually like to have a good "re-issue" of Fender's 1964 Blonde Bassman head/cab (6G6-B circuit). More simple circuit w/ better tone and you can get a Strymon Flint if you want Reverb/Tremolo or El Capistan for Tape Echo.

    I think Lee and Rob need to put some of their duo jam sessions on a cd. I love this instrumental jam in this video and I have heard others that are just as good from them. I would certainly be willing to pay for such a cd. They are dang good.
    So guys when is the debute date of your 1st cd? (smirk)

    I love the deluxe reverb cause its a bit warmer and i think no one does clean better than fender blackface not even two rock they are all based on the fender design, the vox would be my second favourite.

    Stock Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue can still tend too much toward the Ice Pick side of the spectrum, but swapping tubes & speakers can easily rectify that without performing major surgery.

    • @bitterclinger
      @bitterclinger 10 років тому

      Fender Marshall I mean that it (just like the stock Blues Jr I had previously) is far too Sharp and Biting on the top-end/Treble frequency range which feels like someone is jabbing your eardrum with an Ice Pick (especially with Tele / single coil pickups). Another tip on all of the stock versions of these tube amps is to replace the power tubes with a good, matched set of NOS Power Tubes...it brought the noise floor way down and as a result made a big impact on the clean tone, and since the noise floor was lower you could also drop the volume a bit lower as well. This did the trick for me on Fender and Vox amps.

      Please let me know what tubes and speakers will alleviate major icepicking in any of the reissues. I have tried everything I can think of and nothing really I have found makes that much difference other than buying an original Fender silverface and hope I get the rebuild right. For what it is worth,I feel that if Fender really made these amps faithfully, and I bet they easily could, they would have a hard time selling any other amp. IMO, this is why the reissues look good, sound pretty good clean, but hate pedals and will not break up. If the reissues did all that, then all the other models would be unnecessary. What do you think? Also, all, without question, all vintage Fender amp restorers that I know will not either touch or warranty if they do touch, any mods on a Fender reissue. On a twin reissue I have has some success pulling two output tubes, pulling a12ax7 tube from the first channel, leaving that channel unused, and putting it in place of the inverter tube on the reverb chanel for a small amout of early breakup, This makes the amp 8 ohm instead of 4 and requires the use of one 8 ohm speaker, or an 8 ohm extension cab only and works best with a low wattage, small coned speaker. Still, this mod is minimal, IMO, and pedals, unless time based, are as difficult to use as in a stock amp setup. Please list suggestions, especially for the 65 deluxe reissue, and I will try them, otherwise it will be Ebay time for all my reissues!

      ***** The problem and the solution for the DRRi is that the power amp is new and so very efficient still. As the output transformer ages, the ice pick issue disappears. If one doesn't want to wait years for this aging to happen, all one needs to do is install an attenuater for about $35. Playing the amp at full volume with an attenuater driving the volume down to an acceptable level will quickly "break in" the output transformer. In a few hours the ice pickness will be gone forever. My all stock Mexico made Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue had terrible ice pickyness, but now she is the most incredible amp ever. I don't need the attenuater anymore and I don't use any pedals. I just plug straight in and she sings and screams so beautifully. But she is loud as a Harley, and so an attenuater is still a good idea in practice or small club situations.
      I have a video showing all this. It's called "Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue cranked"
