I'm not just saying this because I've had a Blues Junior for the past 15 years, but the Blues Junior just fills up the room with round and beautiful sonic goodness. I'd take it over the Bassbreaker any day. It just has THE sound you're looking for out of a Fender amp. If I were after "crunch", Vox's AV30 would be my go-to (at half the price of either of the Fender options). Plus, it might only be 10%, but the Blues Junior IS still less expensive.
Been using the Blues JR for over 10 years. Aint found anything better to lug around and bring tone on stage in most clubs. Always get a thumbs up from other players about tone. Great playing guys.
I have to say - I absolutely LOVED Captain Lee's playing in this video. The tone that he achieved with the amplifier(and pedals), and his casual, soulful playing... it made my jaw drop. What a musician. Also, his lead play during the jams(in all videos) just fits magnificently. Sorry for lots of words. Much love.
I would like to recommend placing a camera over the amps so that everybody can see where the dials are turned to. You know, for easily recreating tones and stuff. Thank you for all your amazingly helpful videos. Love you guys!
Yeah, id go with a tele and a plexi. Not to mention a tele and some of those old Valco made amps, like the mid wattage Supro's back in the day. But i have played through a blues jr a lot, and they are great. I own one.
If you compare 2 amps, you use the same guitar. 'Scientific method': hold some variables constant (player, guitar, cable), change other variables (amps).
Rj Bron if here the same pickups the difference between the two guitars wouldn’t be much. on of that as long as they’re humbuckers they should sound similar enough anyway
One player on one guitar could sound different when on a different amp because it's a different time playing. Best way is to have each player record some loops from a few different guitars then feed the looper into each amp for comparison.
I really do enjoy Lee's playing. Rob is definitely insanely good, but Lee plays more my style and leaves more space between his notes, a la David Gilmour.

It's funny. Most of us, when we first started learning guitar, wanted to be able to shred like Rob one day. As we age, or at least with me, we start to appreciate the subtle and soulful way that Lee plays. So much expression with such lack of volume.
Well. Actually Lee learned to play alongside Rob last 5 to 10 years or so. Back in the days he left it all to Rob. Rob is rock and shredding. Lee is Blues and soloing. Everyone it s own pick.
Hey guys, Can't thank you enough for your reviews on the Bass Breaker series. I have spent almost a year researching and trying out amps in the 10 to 30 watt range. Have played $1,500 amps down to $300 (used Peavey Classic 30). Finally settled on a used Bass Breaker 15 head. Play it through a 2x12 cab with Celestion GH-12 35 watt (circa 1991) speakers. One tip - the middle gain setting with the master turned up almost all the way - supper bluesy lead tone, but more importantly, roll back the volume and it's the amp's loudest cleans with almost no grit. One other tip - I run an ancient Fostex solid state spring reverb through the effects loop. Holly Hell !!!!! The other guitar player in the band plays a Dr. Z Maz Jr. He was absolutely flabbergasted at the BB's debut rehearsal. Tonal BLISS!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!
You guys are the most likeable music related youtube channel, keep it up. oh ye im still waiting on the distortion, gain, overdrive differences/tips video
I use these 2 amps together in a stereo set-up OR a wet/dry set-up. They are very different. Nice when played together. The Jr is scoopy and has a better clean tone. The bassbreaker is very mid oriented. Be aware that the extra gain in the structure med and hi comes from an analog circuit (TS style ) in the effect loop. Actually you can reproduce the structure med gain tones with a TS in the effect loop while structure is in low position....You can reproduce structure hi gain by adding a second TS overdrive in the effect loop with structure in low position....
+Rob Chapman in all honesty - a "Chappers does Dark Souls" series would probably be the one non-guitar related video series I'd love to see from you :P
I can't believe this is posted less than a day and you've got 5680 views already! Iwent out to purchase a Bassbreaker based on Rob's comment in a previous vid that "this is the best amp Fender has EVER made". Once I got to store I happened to plug into a Blues jr just for comparison and thought it to be the better of the two...nevertheless, I purchased BOTH and one will be returned in 30 days. I've only played a BJ at jams, for 20 mins at a clip, but like it alot. We'll see. Thanks for this shootout...same thing I"m engaged in right now.
Lee's Cap10 has such a chunky gain sound in the bridge when mixed with the drive and bass of the Bassbreaker and that's the sound I'd go for. So, personally, I believe the Bassbreaker is much better for diversity. The Junior kinda just does what it says on the tin but I respect that so much. It's an amp for people who know what they want.
I own a Jnr and I popped into my local guitar shop to try the BB. Very different beasts but I did prefer the jnr. Its got more range on it id say, The BB sounds very scooped.
Thanks a lot guys..... I went out and bought the bassbreaker 15 head because of you!! Can't wait to fire it up at home with a proper cab!!!! You guys rock!
Thank you for this great review.. I was so impressed with your review I purchased the 15w Head and a 1x12 cabinet. Got it today and I am completely blown away! Thanks to you.. I have an awesome sounding rig! Keep up the good work!

I did this same AB comparison in guitar center. Both had great clean tones...the bassbreaker was a bit warmer and the bluesjunior a bit chimier. The bassbreaker obviously has more sound options but it only has one channel so I'm going to use pedals to get gain sounds anyways. The real deal breaker was all of the modern features on the bassbreaker. More tonal options for recording, an XRL out, an fx loop. The blues junior doesn't seem to do low "apartment" volumes well too, the volume really jumps up as you increase the master volume
Reverb Comparison (listening thru apple buds): I found the bass breaker 15's verb had a bit more clarity to it. It allowed you to hear the distinct notes when playing lead with a solid verb trail. The Blues Jr had that classic ol' school verb sound. It sounded like a larger space which is great for ambient tones, but didn't have the same clarity as the bass breaker. Both amps are awesome and choosing one or the other is not any easier :(
@@DavidRFIT I agree completely. They're not the same amp. The Tweed has a Jensen speaker and is modeled after the old Fender Deluxe amps. The Black tolex version is modeled from the Hot Rod series and has a Celestion speaker.
after playing both because I was a fan of both I would say that the blues Jr was basically plug and play I couldn't get a bad sound and though I got a sound I was happy with on the bassbreaker it did take more work than the jr did.
Dudes! You always present entertaining and informative reviews. I think you guys are the mutts nuts . . . . My only caveat might be: For me, when comparing two amps, I want to hear the amps, not a couple of pedals over the top, because I can't make a judgement on the amp if all I'm hearing is the pedals ;)
The Bassbreaker 15 is the best thing since sliced bread! For one its affordable and is a great practice amp. You can also gig with it by paring it with a cab!
Have you lads ever done a cab comparison? Would be great to hear the same head through different cabs. I think a lot of people would find it interesting how much difference a cab makes to tone. Keep up the fine work gentlemen.
There was some kind of funny volume compression happening on the amp mics that made it difficult to hear some of the cleaner - milder licks; as the volume dropped very low. Then - at the very end of each lick - as the amp volume faded - the compression kicked back out and the video volume increased a lot for a second. It wasn't good - very different than the sound handling on most of your videos. Whatever that was - let's hope you don't do that any more. Otherwise - a great comparison video !!
Your hearing the mic switch from the amp to the voices is all. In post editing, they go from the amp mic to the speaking mic, and when they switch to the voice mic, you're still hearing the live amp in the background.
It's probably gotta do with the fact that the amps were mic'd and whoever edited the video went back and forth between the amp mics and the overhead mics for Rob and Lee's voices.
I tried them both in the store. The clean sound on the blues jr is so much better then the bassbreaker. I thought the bassbreaker would be classic fender clean tone and marshall gain type sound but the clean sound in my opinion wasn't there on the bassbreaker.
+Riccardo Ferrari Yes different bridge but honestly, through UA-cam, the sound difference you will hear is negligible. For the purposes of this video, as long as they have the same pickups, the guitars pretty much sound the same .
I've tried both of these amps and I'll probably try them again after watching this but for my needs I think the Blues Jr. is just a little too loud! One of my favorite things about the Bassbreaker is that you can set it at a fairly low volume and still get that great fender tone! Still hoping I get to own both someday though! These are just two great amps period!
Blues Junior all day. But. it's hard to tell really. I'd rather just see this video as a showcase of Chapman guitars, and playing styles for both participants. Remove the limiter / compressor, all the post-processing that was done on the audio for an uncompromising comparison. Turn the amps down a bit, but also keep the tubes heated. We need RAW sound. Personally, I'd go for the Blues Junior and *A LOT* more blues playing. ;D Cheers
The blues Jr. just has "that" sound. I love mine and for the last 5 years haven't felt like I need a new amp or a better sound. If I were to feel that way someday I would go for a more expensive Fender than the Bass-breaker, or just mod my blue Jr.
I love my Mesa/ Boogie Express 5:50. Best $700 I spent on an amp(used/ great deal). $1200 amp that will appreciate in value over time if Mesa still has such a name in the industry. www.premierguitar.com/articles/mesa-boogie-express-5-50-combo-1
When playing at home you can crank your volume knob and keep the master really low and it gives you a gainy grainy rock tone without need for a pedal. Works well if you're on a tight budget but want to have "pickupability" if you're into a heavier sound. Personally I'm just as happy playing clean, but I thought I'd share.
Thats not really true for me. I have a H&K tm18 and the lead channel sounds really shitty and fizzy to me, but with my Soulfood, Joyo VO, Joyo UD and my Plush Drive in the clean channel it sounds great.
When they switch guitars you can hear the bassbreaker isn't as dynamic as the blues jr. The heavy sound of the bassbreaker is really good but the clean and crunch isn't as good as the bluse jr. The bassbreaker is good if you want to shred to a backing track cracked really loud but when you go play in a rock band with real songs Blues Junior kicks its butt and it's frustrating because I have the base breaker. Lol
blue junior is the tele to the bassbreakers start. they're both amazing, just the bassbreaker wins in versatility. but as a guy who plays almost exclusively clean tones i do not regret buying my blues junior. phenomenal amplifier.
I've owned both. Still have a Bassbreaker 30R. I love that Fender sound. Fender's reverb is, in my opinion, the best on the planet. However, it sounded very much like both of you were pushing the reverb to it's limit. When you get that much "woosh" at the end of a stroke... it's too much, don't you think? Great demo but I was just curious about this.
The Paranoid Blues Man mabye to you but I dont agree the terms your using are literally sayi ng that its not a great sounding amp thin idk what your talking about this amp is very round if you know what that means but I really disagree with you saying thin have you ever played one I would think that you have just from your name and I would think you would like it because alot of blues players love the tone of that amp it is one of the most popular amps out right now especially for a smaller amp
i own a blues jr iii and its not a full sounding amp. it was very bright and no bass before the mods and c-rex speaker. my super champ xd with rajun cajun sounded tons better on channel 1 clean. the jr still really doesnt sound that great after the mods. with distortion or tube screamer it sounds decent, but on clean the notes just are not defined or super clear. for $600 there is probably better choices. i would save and get a deluxe reverb. the best clean amp ive ever heard was a twin reverb.
Not sure what you mean by no gain from the Blues Jr. without pedals? Peg the Volume knob at 3:00, the Master knob at 7:00 or 8:00, hit the FAT switch and plug in something with humbuckers. That tone breaks up very nicely. I would say positively crunchy. Love the Blues Jr. I did buy a new amp recently and played the Bassbreaker 15 on several occasions for test drives with Telecasters. A great amp. However, the Blackstar Artist 15 won in a head to head comparison with the Bassbreaker 15. It was close though. Good review! Thanks.

My phone went of because chappers uploaded a video , teachers mad right now...
ha I'm off school for half term
+2nd hand circle VEVO same
Schools out for me today :)
Dudes! You always present entertaining and informative reviews. I think you guys are the mutts nuts . . . .
My only caveat might be:
For me, when comparing two amps, I want to hear the amps, not a couple of pedals over the top, because I can't make a judgement on the amp if all I'm hearing is the pedals ;)
the sound levels are all over the shop
phew - thought it was my ears. Can hardly hear the Junior at times
Probably because chapman uses too much pedal gain through loud pickups.. throws the whole mix out
loving the captains playing so soulful
Is it just me or was Lee's guitar recorded too low?
No, it wasn't just you, levels seemed massively out of whack
Is it just me or am I all on my own again??
+BiteThePillowImGoingDry You are a figment of your own imagination...
I think we've got a different song man :D - Im talking about "is it just me" by the Darkness
+BiteThePillowImGoingDry Ah I see, thought you were being sarcastic there!
I've been looking for an in-depth video such as this one for ages! Thank you so much!
Do a video of a Bassbreaker 45 and a Hot Rod Deluxe III. That would be interesting.
I totally agree with the conclusion of the video. You can't go wrong with either amp.
lees playing has become so sweet!
The Bassbreaker 15 is the best thing since sliced bread! For one its affordable and is a great practice amp. You can also gig with it by paring it with a cab!
Lee is such a tasteful player
This video reminds me of the old videos with those guitars, you guys are awesome.
I really think that when they review amps they should show the settings.
Have you lads ever done a cab comparison? Would be great to hear the same head through different cabs. I think a lot of people would find it interesting how much difference a cab makes to tone. Keep up the fine work gentlemen.
You can get gain out of a Blues Junior by just turning the master down and the volume up
You guys are the Top Gear(Clarkson/May/Hammond version) of gear reviews. Cheers from Nashville...y'all. (I don't ever actually say y'all...or cheers.)
I agree with ya. The reverb seemed to kick in on Lee's guitar after he had stopped playing.
Your hearing the mic switch from the amp to the voices is all. In post editing, they go from the amp mic to the speaking mic, and when they switch to the voice mic, you're still hearing the live amp in the background.
It's super annoying. "listen to this reverb.." And the 'verb gets cut off after a second and they start speaking over it in the background.
Yeah. Sudden Volume & Reverb Surge ? It really threw-me-off.
It's probably gotta do with the fact that the amps were mic'd and whoever edited the video went back and forth between the amp mics and the overhead mics for Rob and Lee's voices.
I’ve gotten some great crunch out of a blues junior I love them
good to see the ml2 getting some love :) it's been a while!!
I really love this show :)
i could watch this all the time.
Absolute favourite youtube channel!!!
Thanks for the video as always! Can I suggest you balance the sound between voice and guitar a little better? Voice is a lot louder than the guitar.
I tried them both in the store. The clean sound on the blues jr is so much better then the bassbreaker. I thought the bassbreaker would be classic fender clean tone and marshall gain type sound but the clean sound in my opinion wasn't there on the bassbreaker.
"Say 'gain' one more time Rob I swear to god..." - Lee's inner monologue
It's made me love my FBJ all the more. Unplugging my Tubemeister 18 now.. Nice work, nice tones, nice tea, .. just nice!
you should use both the same guitar
They basically are. They're both mahogany solid bodies with bolt-on necks, ebony fretboards, and humbuckers.
Yes but different puckups and maybe strings and bridges
+Riccardo Ferrari Yes different bridge but honestly, through UA-cam, the sound difference you will hear is negligible. For the purposes of this video, as long as they have the same pickups, the guitars pretty much sound the same .
+gdawgs101 yes i know i know
+Riccardo Ferrari Then why'd you say they should use the same guitar?
best way to spend my birthday, watching you guys rocking it up :D
Happy Birthday!
+geetarbube thanks dude!
Congratulations mate ;)
+Giovanni Frau thanks bro ;)
You two should do a micro amp shootout, so like the blackstar fly3 vs the mini marshall ones, etc.
They're all terrible
Picked up a dsl20 cause of you guys and now I think I need a blues jr. for those luscious clean tones
Great demo and like the pictures of the pedals coming up on screen great idea
Blues Junior all day. But. it's hard to tell really. I'd rather just see this video as a showcase of Chapman guitars, and playing styles for both participants.
Remove the limiter / compressor, all the post-processing that was done on the audio for an uncompromising comparison. Turn the amps down a bit, but also keep the tubes heated. We need RAW sound. Personally, I'd go for the Blues Junior and *A LOT* more blues playing. ;D
Cheers
Is it just me or did the audio become really low during some of the guitar parts?
josh grant nah it's the mic set up.
When they play they switch over to the mic sound.
Thanks Guys - was going to buy the bassbreaker but from your video I like the Blues Jr. better.
I'd rather get the one that sounds better clean and use pedals for the dirt
Stinkfist2000 Trust me, if you don't like the amps dirt on its own, you won't like it with whatever pedal you put in front of it.
Thats not really true for me. I have a H&K tm18 and the lead channel sounds really shitty and fizzy to me, but with my Soulfood, Joyo VO, Joyo UD and my Plush Drive in the clean channel it sounds great.
Stinkfist2000 not me
I'd rather buy an amp with killer distortion and never play clean :p
mechmat12345 well that's kinda limiting. what do you play? punk?
Captains playing has gotten much better from earlier vids. Good work mate.
Lol
blue junior is the tele to the bassbreakers start. they're both amazing, just the bassbreaker wins in versatility. but as a guy who plays almost exclusively clean tones i do not regret buying my blues junior. phenomenal amplifier.
start => strat
The "woosh" thing comes from the post production ways, when they blend the close mic sounds back to the room mics for speaking.
Excellent! Love the gain on the Bassbreaker, and the awesome blues jr's strat tone ... dig it ... great stereo setup ... must buy both !!!! :-)
Blues Junior does to me sound more richer and dynamic
This comparison is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks guys :)
Blues Jr sounds way more full and has a better breakup. You can't beat it
it's a musician's term, you wouldn't understand it
I would never have described a Blues Junior as sounding "full"... "Thin", "reedy" and "prone to flatulence" comes to mind.
Apparently you've never played through a pro junior
I like the new look Rob, looks much better than the dreds imo.
Unusual for these videos but the levels in this seem off. Still enjoyed it though
Thanks.
bruh I'm getting bassbreaker 15 can't go wrong with this one
