Bought the 68 princeton and threw a greenback speaker in there. It sounds absolutely fantastic and the greenback gives me a little more clean headroom. This pairs amazingly with my Gibson LP Custom and made me fall in love with my rig all over again.

This is a killer amp, I've gigged with mine and it fits well in the mix and is plenty loud enough for most places and mic'ed up into a PA you're set. Also takes pedals extremely well.

I love the ‘68 Princeton. I had a very though time deciding between it, and an AC-15. I went with the Vox, and I’m very happy with it, but I still think a lot about the Princeton - I may have to add it to my arsenal. 😉👍

Thanks! Appreciate that -- I actually got that idea because I've always enjoyed when amps came with cards or manuals that show EQ settings on how to get different genre or artist inspired tones. Even if the ones on the cards were terrible in real life!
I just found my Hot Rod Deluxe manual from 2005 and went through those settings a couple weeks ago! I agree it was really cool to have it as a guide even though most of those settings weren't good. Keep it up man! I've realized all the tube amps I've ever had are great I just don't know who to EQ them, I kept an AC 15 for only like 3 weeks because I couldn't figure out how to push the mids. These descriptions are perfect for people like me, I've been practicing guitar for a very long time by myself but I've only been playing in bands for a few years. I still have a lot to learn about EQing my amps, what sounds good when practicing isn't the same as what I need to sit in the mix well. The fact that you describe the characteristics of each amp and how moving the knobs changes each one is awesome!

I have a 68 custom Princeton reverb and I realized the secret of how to set it. The issue with the amp is a resistor on the tone stack that makes this amp more like a bassman amp. Hear me out. The issue is not that the amp has more bass, it’s that there is a preset amount of low mids. Because of this, even if you turn the bass off, there’s always a very present low end.
However, set the volume to 5, the treble to 8 and the bass to 5 and turn the volume on your guitar down to 3-4 and you will have the beautiful fender clean sound, very much like a standard Princeton. By raising the treble and bass, you effectively scoop the low mids that make this amp sound weird in a lot of demos. Even better, turn up the volume knob on your guitar and you have the best breakup in a small fender amp that I have heard.
This took a while to get to. You cannot just leave your guitar volume on 10 and set the amp the same as you would another Princeton. This amp is it’s own thing. Explore it and you’ll be rewarded.

This is a super common way of playing with non-master volume amps. Have your guitar volume pot control the breakup as well as volume
lomoholga Yes. Super common for breakup, but I was also bringing up that it creates a tonal change to roll the volume back and have the amp turned up. Amp on 5 and guitar volume at 3, is a different tonality than amp on three and guitar on 10 even though it’s pushing the same dB in the room.

Yes of course. I think this was literally super common in the past but since the 2000’s many players are not aware of this as they are playing master volume everything etc
Agreed, I found that at lower volumes from 1 to 4 or five, the treble control needs to be turned to about eight and the base down to about three. It sounds fantastic at that level. If you have the treble control turned down below seven I believe it sounds way too boxy and mid rangey. I have the Celestion Gold in mine. Sounds great!
I dig this amp! I got one in 2015. Just recently I put a Celestion G10 Alnico Gold 10" speaker in, and I like what that's doing. It's a little louder (cleaner at the volume I play at) and has more nice detail. I've been recording with this amp for the last few months using the Two Notes Torpedo CaptorX and am really happy. I rarely take it past 4 Volume. Nice demo Jack! Take care.

@@matheuscolombari3110 I LOVE the sound quality of the CaptorX. I have two of them now - one for each Princeton (65/68). I only record through the CaptorX' now. Sound great through cans too. The attenuation is too much for me though. The first selection is way too quiet IMO, and the 2nd selection is just a joke. Princetons are 12 watt amps though. It may be fine with a 50-100 watt amp that's cranked. I didn't buy the CaptorX for attenuation, but for silent recording, and for that they are amazing.
@@ChadWork1 nice! Im looking to get a tube amp but live in an apartment and sound will be an issue when dialing "the tone", even tho Im getting a 15 watt max tube amp. I like that you can play with headphones on the captor, and most attenuators do not have that possibility. So Im looking at the captor X as a solution that does all I need. The OX has bettwr attenuation, but Costs 2x-3x de Captor ;-;
@@matheuscolombari3110 yeah it’s about impossible to jam without headphones in an apartment. You never know, the CaptorX might put it at a level you can use in the room. All I know that it sounds great for recording.
Let me give you a little humble tip. Change the Celestion ten 30, is not a bad speaker at all !!,( I save mine). I put on my 68 custom PR a Jensen p10r, and bingo!, there is much more magic inside this awesome amp now, with this fantastic upgrade!, ah....beautiful

@@cigaromn Really???,,,why??.. mine is 2 years of hard work and the cone is soo smooth ... and the alnico magnet make something too, demagnetizing .... mmm 30 years ago my fender DReverb does not sound the same as today...
I prefer speakers with more power. You can turn prs into much louder cleaner sounding amps with a heavier magnet speaker like an eminence. Or a celestion gold or blue. Or a Weber ceramic.
The Jensens and smaller celestions like the stock one here have a cool sound too. Great for low volume playing. But I like having more oomph that the above speakers and others can give
I do like 10 inch speaker better than 12 inch in Princeton reverbs

Just bought one of these and I am astounded by the clean tones with any single coil from Strat to Soap Bars to Jazzmaster Single coils although if you are a Gibson player this amp may not suit you! as it does get dark with higher output humbucking pickups.... But for single coil bliss there is nothing I have played that is better! My Twin is better all round but the clean on this little beauty is stunning!

I own this amp and to my knowledege there are 2 different channels also.....ch-1 is a bassman circuit and input 2 is the princeton circuit. I can clearly hear it night and day on my amp.
Thanks for the information and content. I bought one of these amps 7 or eight years ago and played it a bit then put it away. I started thinking about this amp and did a search for videos. Your video is an excellent introduction for this Princeton. I am going to bring my Princeton out and enjoy it. Especially since I have a NOS amp that I bought before inflation. Saved hundreds of dollars I guess....
I just bought this amp today. I had my reservations about getting a Princeton. I do plan on gigging with it mic’d up into the PA. We play a mix of country,rock,pop,blues...All over the place. Anyways... I played through the 65 Princeton and the 68 and there was such a difference to my ears. The 65 sounded thin and weak. The Silverface had WAY more body to it. I was shocked at how much low end it had. Right now I like the bass on 5 and the treble at 7. Needed a bit more treble to get it to sparkle. I’m looking forward to using this at my next show. I hope it does well for me within a live band context. Sure would be nice carrying around this little baby as opposed to a big heavy amp from now on. Lol!

Thanks for the overview. Just bought one a few weeks back and have been dialing it in to my particular style. You get some really nice Strat tones. Appreciate the tips on the different tonal varieties using the two guitars.
Cool amp I have had it about a week now, paired with my PRS McCarty MC58. It's got a nice sound but is WAY bass heavy. Even with the bass on ZERO it is still too "boomy".
try with the bass on 3 and trebble around 7 with volume around 5 if playing clean. with a Telecaster i don't find it boomy at all
@@HolodeckCaptain It's different with my Strat for sure. I fixed all my issues by replacing the v1 preamp tube from 12AX7 to 12AT7. It's way less "hot" now too, which is a good thing, clean headroom is now huge and it sounds fantastic and breaks up just right how I like it.
My next step will be to see if I can change out the reverb tube to something less output as I also find the reverb way too "heavy"
@@aqualung1466 glad to hear u made it work for you! i suggested those settings because i found that the bass and treble are very interactive, not unlike the controls on some pedals. mine is still all stock after about 3 years, but now i kinda wanna try a different speaker for more headroom.. i'd like to try a more efficient speaker, but not sure what to go with because i like the way the stock celestion sounds and i don't wanna lose the tone.

I own a 68 princeton myself, sounds great and pairs beautifully with strats and teles, only issue I have is when playing specifically with guitars that have Humbuckers the low ends can be really intense and almost too much even with the bass rolled all the way off. I almost never play my PRS through this amp because of this issue. Not a huge deal but definitely something to keep in mind, this amp has a way warmer tone then something like a 65 custom
There’s a mod you can do to fix the heavy bass response. Theres an 18k resistor across the bass pot. This adds bass to the signal even with the pot turned down. The fix is to solder a jumper across that resistor, taking it out of the circuit. I’m still waiting for my amp to be delivered so I haven’t tried it yet, but I read about it online where someone was about to sell their amp due to the same issue. Then they did this mod and it’s their favourite amp now. Hope this helps!
I purchased one of these, and I really like it.
The Celestion Ten30 speaker is great at low volumes.
But beyond about 2.5 to 3 on the volume, not so good.
I added a Gold speaker, and now it “Woo Hoo!!!”
And my bass know has to be low, like three and the treble, about eight.
I bet that gold sounds superb in it

Like everyone says, when I first installed it, I wasn’t very impressed.
But after about 3 hours of playing it started loosening up.
And it just kept getting better from there.
I have lots of hours on it now, and it’s pretty much settled into its own.
I think anyone buying one of these should just order a gold speaker when they order the amp.

I put a Ragin' Cajun in mine. It handles the bass so much better. It's a little more efficient so it actually increased the headroom a little.
I run an archtop and a Tele through it. Versatile.

I put in a Celestion G10 Gold. Love it. Amp works equally well with a Tele and an archtop
The G10 Gold adds a little volume and sparkle.
Does it add more clean head room?
@@luthfimuhammad5248 to a small extent. The extra 3.5dB of sensitivity means you can turn down the volume control slightly.

Pops real nice into that mike. The Princetons are nice amps. Make a great studio amp as well but, they don't keep up to the Bass and Drummer. You need to listen real hard or get it on a stand closer to your ear.

I've owned this amp for a few years now and even with a more efficient /upgraded speaker and a 5751, it still sounds muffled and wank when paired with humbuckers.
I found the same thing. I had a fsr in bright blue tolex and a green back. I couldn't tame the low end muffle. Unless I turned the the bass almost off. I have a 65 princeton now and the tone is what I was expecting. I absolutely love it!
have you tried the #2 input with bass all the way down and the treble all the way up? I do that a lot on other amps, but don't own this one, never have tried it

It definitely seems like this amp is built for single coils. I’d be curious to hear a comparison of humbuckers vs P-90s with it.
I have one and it was to bassy for me even at 0 I play with a 335 on the neck pick up and I found out that there is a 18k resistor on the bass pot so took it to my tech and we by pass it now I got more control its perfect

@@JackFossett I found the stock '65 reissue harsh compared to the '68, which I love. I also recommend pairing it up with a hollowbody. Either an ES 175 type, or a Gretsch 6120 style, quite lovely.

Very different actually. The Vibro is voiced more like you’d expect whereas the Princeton is a departure from the classic tone. Vibro doesn’t have nearly the same bass response.

Nice review and playing. W the Gib sounded killer. Can you dial out the bass? If the knob is at 0 or 1? 2? Seems the best way to do that is kick in the Tubescreamer!

Great info Jack. I dearly want a Princeton amp. The last couple of years I have been playing Fender Blues Jr. But for the last couple of weeks I go back & forth between the 65 & 68. I listen to one video and I want to 65, I listen to another video and I want the 68. I basically play the blues & some jazz at home. The heavy bass on the 68 wants me to go to the 65. I appreciate your input.

Some times the 65 demos sound nicer. Sometimes the 68 demo do. This one is a magic best of both (68 & 65) worlds version with the added benefit of the 12” speaker giving a more natural/organic tone...

@@JackFossett Agree. I did numerous comparisons and the 65 Blackface Sounded Better. Higher Clean-headroom (however) The Tremolo on the 68 was slightly Deeper. Love my 65 = it's Phenomenal.

At 16:38 he is still talking and says “with the Reverb and the TWEED,” you can get some great blues tones off a 335-339 etc. Great video if you want to hear someone talking - might even help you sleep.

First off, great video! I bought one of these about 5 months ago and I'm looking to get a new speaker (problems with bass when hitting low notes, I hear it's a common problem with these). Based on reviews I'm currently looking into either an Eminence Ragin' Cajun or a Celestion Gold G10...anyone have any good pros and cons for these two speakers? (btw I'm playing a Les Paul into it at the moment)
Depends on what sound you're going for - I haven't compared them directly, but the RC will be fat and bold whereas I imagine the Gold will be warmer and a bit more compressed.

I have the black and blue edition, it has 12" Celestion Blue alnico speaker. I found it to be too heavy on the bass always. I tried maxing out the bass and treble, and the bass issue goes away.

Yup, the '68 Princeton is gonna be my tube amp. It's ALL tube. Even those 'all-tube' bigger Fenders have a solid state output stage.
I'm not aware of any fender tube amps that that have a solid state output except certain models of the champ. Their classic amps have pre amp tubes and power tubes.
I think he means rectifier. tube rectifier, in addition to preamp and power tubes.

I'd be interested in your opinion: does it have a good sound already at living room level (so at low volumes), or does it need high volume for real good sounds, like the bigger Fender amps ? Thanks for the video, Cheers!
Great guitar for jazz - sounds very good at lower volumes in my opinion. But if you’re looking at gigging you may want to think about the 65 instead - doesn’t break up as quickly.

Which of the two Princeton's 65 and 68 reissue amps do you prefer and why?
Tonally on its own I prefer the 65 by far, but if I were going for a pedal platform I think the 68 is more usable. Especially if you put in a better speaker.
@@JackFossett This review was what sold me on the 68CPR 3 years ago (i actually still have the vid bookmarked😅) and I've loved this amp ever since. I play mostly blues and jazz at home (on a Telecaster) on ch1 with volume at 5 +/-, sometimes clean, sometimes through a KeelyBD (now a Muse Driver). My question for you is, what would be a better speaker? I like the stock speaker, but at the same time maybe i'd like a bit more headroom? Thanks!
Hi Jack! Good video thank you for it... Just got the amp today, I love it... I like your BB King's tone when you start playing at the end, what did you dialed to get this tone? I own a Gibson Lucille and I'm a big fan of BB. I have an original '68 super reverb but, an old hurt back..., so I feel like this gets me to where I like to be with the SR and more and I don't need help to carry it 'cause my back's fucked..... Did you try it with and extension cab?
Thanks! Which spot in the video are you talking about exactly? I didn't do any work with an extension cab with this amp, it belongs to a friend of mine so I didnt have my hands on it for terribly long. I think for a good BB tone though start with the bass down, the treble and reverb up.

I have a 1974 twin reverb excellent condition but way too loud. Someone wants to trad for this 68 Princeton... is that a fair trade. I’m a home player only.

Just picked one up and the best amp I have ever owned but wondering why my Fender silver Vib/Reb 2 button pedal I pulled from my Deluxe reverb isn't engaging the Vibrato. Any suggestions?

I personally prefer the 65 - I’ve done a shootout between the two if you’re interested. For SRV/Mayer, the 68 may be a better bet though.

Thank you! At lower volumes they're similar, but this one breaks up much faster and sounds more like a blend with a Tweed amp. The 65 is a little brighter and has a smoother breakup, as well as more clean headroom.
Too loud for bedroom volumes? Can you get good OD sounds at bedroom volumes IF you use pedals for the OD?
At least decent. It depends a lot on the pedal you’re using. It does get a better tone if you can get the volume just a bit higher at least
Although this is not your app would you trade it for in original silver face fender Vibro Champ or Princeton
Hmm no I don't think I would. I'm personally not a fan of the old Vibro Champs, I think this is a much more versatile amp.

Don't get me wrong for asking but,,,Who started the "WHACK all your strings before you play a single note and bend or vibrato? I do like your playing and the demos sound excellent. The amp gets kinda ugly at 10 .Not in a sweet way..more Fkd up way

My step one was roll the 10 in woofer into traffic and get the 12 in baffle from mojotone.
Jack Fossett, does it have the kind of knobs that when you barely turn the volume up it turns up too quickly like my small, cheap, Fender Frontman 15G. The tech at the music store told me what I have is cheap pots and is not very good. I am used to the 1970 Fender Bronco Amp like the one on your vid except with an 8 inch speaker with knobs that don't turn up so quickly which I like. It concerned me when the maker of the Fender 68 Custom princeton reverb you're showing said "Touch Sensitive". I thought it might mean like my cheap amp pots. Thanks.
Nono wouldn’t say that - it has a reasonable sweep on the volume knob. By touch sensitive I mean it’s dynamic. If you pick lightly, it sounds softer and smoother, if you pick more aggressively it sounds bolder and brasher

2:50 - Hey Jack, I get it, but let me tell you that I used to play a lot of gigs in the 90's a lot and I made it through the entire decade with only one Marshall 2 guitars and 4 pedals and it never dawned on me to buy more guitars or amps or fx. It's only now that I no longer play gigs that I have 10 times more gear than I ever had, now tell me, does this make sense? But it's what we're all doing.
I've been there too, I used to travel and play alot with a pretty cheap rig. In fact for over a year a played entirely with an early Vox Valvetronix back around 2006.
Would you recommend that more than the blues jr or a deluxe reverb tonemaster? For using pedals
I think this amp is really hard to beat if you swap the speaker. I think even stock its probably better than a Blues Jr, but I havent played the Tonemaster deluxe, just the Super. I'd take the Tonemaster Super over this though.

How do you feel about the Princeton vs Super Reverb?
Even though they’re from the same amp family they’re oddly difficult to compare just because of the massive size difference. I think the Princeton is probably smarter for most situations unless you just need massive level of clean volume
