Special Stage set the bar for console Initial D games. Loads of extra content, music and even the extra story mode. I just wish they would’ve put Street Stage on PS2/PS3 instead of PSP. Ver. 3 is my all time favorite, but it would’ve been nice to see it get the Special Stage treatment. Still wayyyy better than Extreme Stage though… I’m glad they toned down the driftiness from AS5 onwards.
They did? I guess I'll have to give the later games a chance. I got the hang of extreme stage and beat it after awhile but it still felt off with how you could just gas through turns even if you wacked into every wall. Sometimes that was the better strategy against some of the AI.
I do agree street stage should have been ported to another console. I'm hoping for a remastered port special stage or maybe even Ver. 3. That would be insane.
@@BlankTriggerGamers They definitely improved it. I haven’t had the chance to play 5-7 with a wheel, but from the videos I’ve seen it looks a lot better. AS5 is the closest to Ver. 1-3 in terms of cars not sliding as much.
I’m not sure where you’re located, but if you have a Round 1 arcade in your state, it’s worth checking out. Mine has AS8 and it feels good with a wheel. Also, went to a local anime con and the arcade there had Arcade Stage Zero and it felt even better.
If you have a halfway decent PC, look into the emulators. There’s tutorials for how to get AS4-Zero working on a PC. Even the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune games. I’m currently playing through AS7 with a controller, but it still feels loads better than AS4/Extreme Stage
AS5 is considered to be the best Initial D game period. It’s physics is more grip based with some elements to drifting. However, it also comes with a tire management aspect. You need to take corners in 2nd or 3rd gear only, with minimal steering as possible, any more then that and it will hurt your tires which will slow you down at the later checkpoints. < do all of these things and it’s possible to beat the entire game using a stock car, well… maybe not with Bunta, that’s the one person I’ve yet to beat using a stock car.

I'm half Japanese and own an Original Fat Silver Japanese PS2. My Japanese Grandpa had bought me one back in 2001 at Toys R Us in Yokohama Japan. So I grew up playing this game, loved it. But never knew the Super Slim can't play the game. That sucks.
But besides that. Nice video man, very relatable on terms of playing it on the arcade and spending lots of money lmao.
Only later Slim models, 70xxx models still play fine, 75xxx and 90xxx series are the ones that get messy, they also screwed some PS1 titles in the process
I still own my ps2 fat and orignal ps2 I also have the boxes to.
Also, for anyone who doesn't want to import from Japan, The HDD mod that let's you boot games from a fat PS2 is region free. You can play this on a US PS2 with no hardware modding, and don't even need a working DVD drive.
I used fmcb, with opl to play it from USB (slim model)
Drawback is lag due to USB 1.1

Use free mcboot. It’s so easy to install and there are many options for loading.
The hdd version is maybe the best because you won’t have loading lag.
Usb works too but it has some lag on the video cutscene portions of the games because the ps2 only has usb 1.0
Another option is to use ESR to read discs you burn yourself.
There are many options and ways to break the region lock and run homebrew on your ps2. Look up a guide.

I made this experience before. I got an ultra rare Broadband Adapter for the Dreamcast directly from Japan - shipping per EMS was ridiculously inexpensive, less than half of what DHL would have cost, the item itself was also half of what they go for around these places, and then it also due to some shifty timezone magic, it arrived the same day that i ordered! Perfect condition, too. Crazy, right?
I would suggest the Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 (Kaido Touge No Densetsu) if you're itching for that Initial D experience, while the game itself had nothing to do with Initial D in any shape of form, there are a lot of FamilyMart versions of Initial D characters and even Over Rev characters of all things, and a pretty big car list to boot too
Problem is it's hard to find so i recommend Extreme Stage even though it's not realistic, but it's a very good INITIAL D game that i suggest playing because you don't need an emulator NOR a Japanese PS3.

All I have to say is FREEMCBOOT memory card. This thing unleashed the ultimate power of playing japanese racing gems I missed out on. Great video by the way.
yep also use ESR, lets u play any game bc it see's them all as DVD video and skips all disc checks. basicly the shortest possible Video file is used in the first sector of the dvd so it can boot the game and it immediately finishes and launches into the game

Happogahara is soooo fun. Irohazaka is great with the hair pin turns and interesting. Happo keeps you on your toes as you need to stay focused on the course. Shomaru is also difficult, narrow and wall taps kill any sort of speed you have... 2yrs ago on my trip to japan i got to drive up and down the Iroha slopes, in a coach bus with the tour. it was almost a dream come true ie 95.0% as the last 5% was small bus stop we passed on the way that had an amazing view of the downhill road from across the corresponding valley. the bus took up all the lanes on the hiarpins and was one of the highlights of the trip. the Kegone waterfalls use the Iroha slope as access to get there.
If everything fails, use an emulator to play the Initial D Arcade Stage 2 or Stage 3. Those games are good on Windows 7 with a good graphic card. I really missed those days when I spent all my allowance on completing Arcade Stage 3 and Stage 4. Stage 3 was really a challenge to me as I had no idea on how this game worked (such as shift point and "eraser" skill). It really took me long to know that cars would accelerate rapidly under drifting in Arcade Stage 3.
Where I was from in Montreal Downtown there was a arcade with Initial D 3 that then became D 4 and Maximum tune 5 with the years,
Best arcade game ever, from the amazing soundtracks, anime campaign, racing others, beating time scores of other's people ghosts, modifying, upgrading your car and it all saved your progress on your card making you always wanting to come back, no other arcade games ever gave me that kind of long-term commitment.
Now I live in Calgary and there is no arcade that has initial D sadly.
I came across this video by chance. Tonight I was struggling with sadness because tomorrow is the anniversary of my grandmother's passing. You actually don’t need a Japanese PS2 to play Special Stage if you softmod your PS2 to run it off a hard drive (or even a usb thumb drive if you don’t mind stuttering FMV). Basically the PS2 only does a region check when first booting up the disc so by launching games from a HDD it bypasses it so you can play games from any region. I even found a partial English translation for Special Stage that translates most of the menus.
Also I have the same wheel so that’s pretty cool. I found mine on the curb for free. I don’t have the pedals though so for now I’m stuck with a controller lol.

Good to know I should have just bought the phat in the first place. I guess it's back to ebay for me too. Promise me this is the last thing I'll have to buy!
Same, I was tearing my hair out for weeks trying to figure out why it didn't work even though there weren't any scratches. But yeah if your game freezes in the opening movie then it's the slim Japanese PS2 that's causing it. The fat Japanese PS2 will fix it.

i hope you kept those ps2. because you can run free mcboot on memory cards and it works on Japanese ps2. i think you can even region unlock japanese ps2 with free mcboot.
I actually gifted the slim to one of my friends who lost her Japanese PS2 after she moved back to the US from Japan and I kept the fat one for myself.
Every year I used to spend a month in China, with my missus. There's an arcade I would go to and play Initial D. Was fun as hell but I'm sure they had the difficulty setting set higher. Lol.

The problem you had on Extreme Stage it's a feature if you have watched the anime then I think you might remember about the tires losing their grip it's all about how you drive and how you drift the same goes for the AI they also have to manage it the reason why drifting feels drifting.

my chipped slim PS2 had no problem with special stage back in the day though. and yeah special stage or Ver.2 is the best Initial D . even infinity nowadays doesn't give you the same feeling of the old school Ver.2 back in the arcade.
I play the Arcade Version and I now have a PS2 whit Initial D Special Stage, I spend so much money in the Arcade on my 1º to 3º Semester of the Univerity just enjoying the Arcade, and im planing on buying a Steering Wheel just to also play Initial D Special Stage and other racing Games.....

@@BlankTriggerGamers I didn't on my own. I was recruited by a local team at my arcade and trained me. It turns out, each arcade with an ID3 cabinet had their own team and does battle. Team leaders were in contact with each other to organize freindly touge's. Man your video brought so many good memories back 🥲

Dude I swear on my dead father’s SOUL I was on my downstairs toilet at 11:30PM when the KNOCK KNOCK sound effect at 5:25 hit my ears. The window in the bathroom leads to the backyard and it was pitch black out there. I called out to my pregnant wife who I’d HOPED had knocked on the bathroom door, no answer, she was asleep. I wiped my ass, jumped up and had my largest kitchen knife in my right hand within ten seconds! I Flicked on both backyard lights and psyched myself up to go out there and face the freak that was peeking on me and knocked on my bathroom window! Finally after about 3 minutes I gathered the courage and stormed outside ready to stab or slash the first person I saw!
My neighbors DEFINITELY saw me and I’m nervous they might call the cops. I played the clip back and realized it was a fucking sound effect you added in! Fuck me that was the most terrifying experience of my life! 😟🤣

@@Stoneybrownbear Oh ok. I am North of you so maybe I just didn't get to see how popular these modchips were. After FreeMCBoot it seemed pointless to chip, even if you wanted to pirate games.
As I recall it, part of Free McBoot's job was to reduce wear on both the HDD and the DVDs being launched, so a chipped system would still need FreeMcBoot anyway, as long as you wanted to preserve your laser and hdd.
im not gonna read through all the 100s of comments before i post this, you do know there's boot softwares and swap kits for each version of US ps2, right?! i have a silver slim version and got me a top loader kit and it works,. granted, it's most likely do to being the the necessary model series of slim. well i had a "brick" version that i was able to play it on years before i had gotten a slim version too.... just saying i guess.
oh ya, i play extreme stage on my ps3 and i couldn't care about the differences from the previous version. though, the physics are a bit up to date since "versions 2 & 3 to 4" and it does kinda make it harder to do a flawless drift in some ways or another. you know what i mean, right?
Yeah I know there's many ways to play this game through emulation or mods to ps2s. I just wanted to own a japanese ps2 and play the original disc. I collect videogames, so this was purely a personal reason. I wouldnt recommend people to do this unless they really want to, but I did want to show that depending on which japanese ps2 you buy...it may not work. It was hard for me to find info about that, so I wanted to make a video about it.

seems like sega rosso was a team only working on local titles, never released outside of japan. daytona was always introduced as better than ridge racer, but i dont really like daytona, initial d is closer to the fun of a ridge racer than a daytona is. too bad sega never trusted it's employees. so many unreleased arcade games and successfull title that never gets a sequel. sega race tv is the very last racing game of yu suzuki, very fun one. remembers me megarace. but once again sega race tv never released outside of japan. anyway cool video, nice writing and editing skills.

as a car guy and an initial d fan, I love the arcade games, and I appreciate the unrealism in the games. Asseto corsa is a good realistic game for drifting, but the initial d games are just fun and rage.

I use to play the shit out of this on the ps2, it was a great game. Also made it so i knew all the tracks so well that I was able to kick the crap out of everyone at the arcade with a unworked ae85 whilst they had fully worked cars. People use to trip right out

Extreme Stage is just a port of Arcade Stage 4, the physics are approximately as janky but fewer people in the west remember IDAS v4. I only wish that the PS2 didn’t have the region locks like with PS3.

3:40 Extreme Stage is a port of arcade stage 4, like street stage being a port of arcade stage 3 and special stage being a port of arcade stage version 2.
All Arcade stage games feature opponents that speed up or slow down by section. And also can't be outrun at a certain point.
Some cap out at a max of 90 meters, some 250, some not at all. But this means that in sections where they speed up, you will be caught by some margin.
But also Arcade Stage 4 is just very very hard. Even on the lowest difficulty levels.

use a PC emulator instead of paying so much money for 2 japanese ps2s. In the PCSX2 (ps2 emulator) setup screen you can just pick a region of which your virtual ps2 is on and i'm pretty sure it can be easily changed in the settings if you eventually want to play a game from another region. Edit: Nevermind, you don't even need to do that at all. PCSX2 automatically makes games for other region work.
pretty sure newer versions of PCSX2 solves this by making the iso dump from different region worked regardless of your BIOS settings

Mainly, cause I just like putting the disc in the console and not messing around with emulators. I suggest people to not do it the way I did it, but if you do then there's this video to show which PS2 to buy.

Don't remember which I had. But the one I had, have a big big problem. I can't save. Also, if I collide with the npc, the npc car is like a brick. It won't budge at all. It just keeps moving on its path like a preset damn flying piece of brick. Did I mentioned I can't save? Sigh.
I remember buying my friends molded PS2 in high school with a copy of Initial D Special Stage and Swap Magic... best $200 I spent back then lol
I love Initial D anime. There should be a Initial D Special Stage port for modern gaming consoles that would be amazing. Cool video. ^_^
The are also issues with fat PS2. Mine is the first model ever released in europe. CGI intro does not show uo so you'll only get a black screen, no sound at all. Press start to bypass it, then all menus seems to work with no problem until you play with the car, there you will have no more full screen, really big black borders intead, the screen is like cut in half. I use GSM in NTSC mode to play fullscreen (does not help with cgi intro,tho)

2024 here - just downloaded an english modded street stage iso and playing it on my cfw 4.91 ps3 🙏
That's really cool surprisingly I still have my original initial D silver key card that I had with the arcade problem is the initial D arcade machine I played on disappeared from where its current location was so I don't know what happened to but I still kept the key card
The special stage arcade racer at my local arcade bar is mint. Along with a gated manual shifter and drink holder....though clipping is still in it
the best is the ps1 version, the ps2 version is only compatible with the first driving force steering wheel, the ps1 version is well enjoyed with the official Madcatz MC2 Playstation steering wheel

@@superboy305 Unfortunately, I played the game REALLY young and hit a wall. I think I was playing Drift 1 or 3, and I just couldn't beat this R32 on an uphill rainy stage.
I probably would've easily beat him had I switched to rain tires, but my underdeveloped brain was more concerned with having fun rather than learning.
I tried everything (except switch my tires). I spent all my money buying the fastest car, buying the best parts, having more hp than my opponent, but could never pass that R32.
(Now that I look back on it, I remember there being several station wagons in the game, and I can't help but think of that video with the stock Subara Outback dominating a steep sandhill.)
Most of my fun was spent feeling the difference between each car in Time Attack. And recreating the "gutter" drift on Haruna, but I just didn't understand cars enough to advance further in career mode.

I remember playing Armored Core 2 and just being completely enthralled by the atmosphere. I was young playing that game, and only got to rank 70 or so. Lol
to anyone who wants to play this game now, you don’t need a japanese ps2 but you do need a fat ps2, a swap magic and a tool to force the tray open, or there’s always pcsx2 both methods are relatively easy and cheaper

Yeah, so I used the same wheel (Logitech Driving Force GT) that I used on the PS3 game but I wouldn't recommend it. The shifters don't work on the PS2.

It looks like the original wheel and pedals didn't have any sort of shiftier with them . I thought you may like to know as it explains why your controller shiftier wouldn't work as it appears to never have been designed with it in mind.

My memories of this game was it was exactly same as the early arcade games.... I played it last night first time in years n dam I didn't realize how unrealistic even compared to arcade stages it is lol but I must admit I love the story mode. It's the best story mode out of all initial d games. I'm actually talking about special stage not extreme stage

i cant for the life of me beat type r civic in arcade mode. i drive a rx7 and I just cannot pass the short hairpins near the end of the track but the civic ai does it so unrealistically well i just can't...

I recommend anyone who comes across this game to buy it, is pretty much arcade stage 2,3, one of the best arcade stages ever made.
Initial D Special Stage DOES play on slim ps2. I soft modded my 7000 series NTSC console with a swap lid and used Cogswap on an exploited memory card with free mc boot. Should have just gotten a swap lid and exploited the MC. Would have saved you a lot of money.
Special stage is arcade stage 2, arcade stage is Arcade stage 3, extreme stage is arcade stage 4 aka ice driving. It is possible to play the new ones on PC.

@AaronRowales they have it on PC now they have arcade simulators. That's how I been playing the new Initial d arcade stage. It's all in Japanese but not bad. I even got the wangan midnight.

@AaronRowales don't think you can go online as it's an arcade emulator. All the network status show offline. I just play it offline with unlimited coins still fun.
Just came to the disappointing news that you came to with this game. I recently modded my PS2 to be able to play imports only to my dismay this game doesn't even work on the slim models. Not a lot of money down the drain thankfully, but I'm still bummed. Good vid, nice editing and very informative...if only I saw it sooner...

@@BlankTriggerGamers it's no biggie, seems the only way to bypass the issue is through loading the game off of a storage like USB but I haven't tried it yet and I feel like that defeats the purpose of me buying it in the first place. It's alright, I already have dozens of other imports I was interested in, including Sega Rally which is also a fun Sega arcade racer.

I finally got both the game and console and you can use it with the Gran Turismo wheel with it I rate it a 10/10 !

You could've just tried to make a FMCB memory card to bypass region lock.
After a year forgot to tell you: you hit walls u get max speed penalty. Sometimes it's not that noticeable when there's many turns. Treat your oponnents like the ghosts that you can block if you're really lucky and just focus on the time if you have bad one they gonna rubber band af.
Drive well and embrace your inner Takumi use gutter run techniques etc. you can do that there. There are 3 difficulty levels and try the easiest one first coz game ain't ez (using controller) also it works on emulator well except drive license bug that you can fix with going into software mode then normal better resolution etc mode.
If you love anime you'll definitely love that game don't want to spoil anything except maybe that there are no tutorials and you can use jump and gutter run technique also you can switch the lights 😉
Also if your controller doesn't work somehow try running pcsx2 with steam for the controller support.

Just here to clarify it, I am using a SCPH 90000 Super Slim PS2 and playing Special Stage brought me no problems at all, I am using the Asian Japanese version which should be the same as full Japanese verision, but mine has a nice English toutrail of the basic controls and gamesaves.
In-game tutorial or an additional paper instructions card? Kind of curious! And yes this does work on 77k and 90k PS2s, I can confirm.

how curious, I have a SCPH-75004 model of ps2, it is a PAL region (but only reads usa games, how weird), it's a slim, it is hacked with matrix and I can play this game normally, I need to say that I play a patched version of the game, so it is in english
maybe I can play it due the region of the console, or matrix, or because it is patched, I don't know, the only problem i have is the screen, but I can adjust it and play the game normally
I had to get a Swap Magic 3 for the PS2 so I can play that game. But it was a great game and I played it a lot when I was a huge Initial D fan. I also played the arcade games. Not all of them though. Up to Arcade Stage Version 3.

I just mod my PS2 so I can play all Japanese games. It still works till this day. When my stepson ask why I have a old PS still. I tell them it’s because of this game.
