Special Stage set the bar for console Initial D games. Loads of extra content, music and even the extra story mode. I just wish they would’ve put Street Stage on PS2/PS3 instead of PSP. Ver. 3 is my all time favorite, but it would’ve been nice to see it get the Special Stage treatment. Still wayyyy better than Extreme Stage though… I’m glad they toned down the driftiness from AS5 onwards.
They did? I guess I'll have to give the later games a chance. I got the hang of extreme stage and beat it after awhile but it still felt off with how you could just gas through turns even if you wacked into every wall. Sometimes that was the better strategy against some of the AI. I do agree street stage should have been ported to another console. I'm hoping for a remastered port special stage or maybe even Ver. 3. That would be insane.
@@BlankTriggerGamers They definitely improved it. I haven’t had the chance to play 5-7 with a wheel, but from the videos I’ve seen it looks a lot better. AS5 is the closest to Ver. 1-3 in terms of cars not sliding as much. I’m not sure where you’re located, but if you have a Round 1 arcade in your state, it’s worth checking out. Mine has AS8 and it feels good with a wheel. Also, went to a local anime con and the arcade there had Arcade Stage Zero and it felt even better. If you have a halfway decent PC, look into the emulators. There’s tutorials for how to get AS4-Zero working on a PC. Even the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune games. I’m currently playing through AS7 with a controller, but it still feels loads better than AS4/Extreme Stage
AS5 is considered to be the best Initial D game period. It’s physics is more grip based with some elements to drifting. However, it also comes with a tire management aspect. You need to take corners in 2nd or 3rd gear only, with minimal steering as possible, any more then that and it will hurt your tires which will slow you down at the later checkpoints. < do all of these things and it’s possible to beat the entire game using a stock car, well… maybe not with Bunta, that’s the one person I’ve yet to beat using a stock car.

My Japanese Grandpa had bought me one back in 2001 at Toys R Us in Yokohama Japan. So I grew up playing this game, loved it. But never knew the Super Slim can't play the game. That sucks. Only later Slim models, 70xxx models still play fine, 75xxx and 90xxx series are the ones that get messy, they also screwed some PS1 titles in the process
Also, for anyone who doesn't want to import from Japan, The HDD mod that let's you boot games from a fat PS2 is region free. You can play this on a US PS2 with no hardware modding, and don't even need a working DVD drive.

I made this experience before. I got an ultra rare Broadband Adapter for the Dreamcast directly from Japan - shipping per EMS was ridiculously inexpensive, less than half of what DHL would have cost, the item itself was also half of what they go for around these places, and then it also due to some shifty timezone magic, it arrived the same day that i ordered! Perfect condition, too. Crazy, right?
I would suggest the Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 (Kaido Touge No Densetsu) if you're itching for that Initial D experience, while the game itself had nothing to do with Initial D in any shape of form, there are a lot of FamilyMart versions of Initial D characters and even Over Rev characters of all things, and a pretty big car list to boot too
Problem is it's hard to find so i recommend Extreme Stage even though it's not realistic, but it's a very good INITIAL D game that i suggest playing because you don't need an emulator NOR a Japanese PS3.
Happogahara is soooo fun. Irohazaka is great with the hair pin turns and interesting. Happo keeps you on your toes as you need to stay focused on the course. Shomaru is also difficult, narrow and wall taps kill any sort of speed you have... 2yrs ago on my trip to japan i got to drive up and down the Iroha slopes, in a coach bus with the tour. it was almost a dream come true ie 95.0% as the last 5% was small bus stop we passed on the way that had an amazing view of the downhill road from across the corresponding valley. the bus took up all the lanes on the hiarpins and was one of the highlights of the trip. the Kegone waterfalls use the Iroha slope as access to get there.
Where I was from in Montreal Downtown there was a arcade with Initial D 3 that then became D 4 and Maximum tune 5 with the years, Best arcade game ever, from the amazing soundtracks, anime campaign, racing others, beating time scores of other's people ghosts, modifying, upgrading your car and it all saved your progress on your card making you always wanting to come back, no other arcade games ever gave me that kind of long-term commitment. Now I live in Calgary and there is no arcade that has initial D sadly.
All I have to say is FREEMCBOOT memory card. This thing unleashed the ultimate power of playing japanese racing gems I missed out on. Great video by the way.
yep also use ESR, lets u play any game bc it see's them all as DVD video and skips all disc checks. basicly the shortest possible Video file is used in the first sector of the dvd so it can boot the game and it immediately finishes and launches into the game
seems like sega rosso was a team only working on local titles, never released outside of japan. daytona was always introduced as better than ridge racer, but i dont really like daytona, initial d is closer to the fun of a ridge racer than a daytona is. too bad sega never trusted it's employees. so many unreleased arcade games and successfull title that never gets a sequel. sega race tv is the very last racing game of yu suzuki, very fun one. remembers me megarace. but once again sega race tv never released outside of japan. anyway cool video, nice writing and editing skills.
If everything fails, use an emulator to play the Initial D Arcade Stage 2 or Stage 3. Those games are good on Windows 7 with a good graphic card. I really missed those days when I spent all my allowance on completing Arcade Stage 3 and Stage 4. Stage 3 was really a challenge to me as I had no idea on how this game worked (such as shift point and "eraser" skill). It really took me long to know that cars would accelerate rapidly under drifting in Arcade Stage 3.
Every year I used to spend a month in China, with my missus. There's an arcade I would go to and play Initial D. Was fun as hell but I'm sure they had the difficulty setting set higher. Lol.
You actually don’t need a Japanese PS2 to play Special Stage if you softmod your PS2 to run it off a hard drive (or even a usb thumb drive if you don’t mind stuttering FMV). Basically the PS2 only does a region check when first booting up the disc so by launching games from a HDD it bypasses it so you can play games from any region. I even found a partial English translation for Special Stage that translates most of the menus. Also I have the same wheel so that’s pretty cool. I found mine on the curb for free. I don’t have the pedals though so for now I’m stuck with a controller lol. Edit: I didn’t mean to post this twice. UA-cam comments were broken for everyone yesterday and I commented this right before they were fixed. When I looked back for my comment I couldn’t find it so I thought it was deleted during the fix.
I’ve got the same wheel too, and the pedals don’t work properly with Special Stage for me. I haven’t been able to figure out why, hoped it would get a mention in this vid, but they only seem to accelerate to about 50% so I can’t shift into high gears or beat a single opponent. So if your experience would have been like mine, you didn’t miss out haha
I’ve since gotten the pedals and have the exact same problem… Also the wheel felt super loose and clunky. I’m assuming it works with an actual disc on a Japanese PS2, and is just a weird bug with OPL or something... At least I can play a bunch of other racing games like Gran Turismo. And Tokyo Extreme Racer: Drift 2 has a lot of the same mountain roads as Initial D but is more realistic.

The problem you had on Extreme Stage it's a feature if you have watched the anime then I think you might remember about the tires losing their grip it's all about how you drive and how you drift the same goes for the AI they also have to manage it the reason why drifting feels drifting.

I use to play the shit out of this on the ps2, it was a great game. Also made it so i knew all the tracks so well that I was able to kick the crap out of everyone at the arcade with a unworked ae85 whilst they had fully worked cars. People use to trip right out

Same, I was tearing my hair out for weeks trying to figure out why it didn't work even though there weren't any scratches. But yeah if your game freezes in the opening movie then it's the slim Japanese PS2 that's causing it. The fat Japanese PS2 will fix it.

Dude I swear on my dead father’s SOUL I was on my downstairs toilet at 11:30PM when the KNOCK KNOCK sound effect at 5:25 hit my ears. The window in the bathroom leads to the backyard and it was pitch black out there. I called out to my pregnant wife who I’d HOPED had knocked on the bathroom door, no answer, she was asleep. I wiped my ass, jumped up and had my largest kitchen knife in my right hand within ten seconds! I Flicked on both backyard lights and psyched myself up to go out there and face the freak that was peeking on me and knocked on my bathroom window! Finally after about 3 minutes I gathered the courage and stormed outside ready to stab or slash the first person I saw! My neighbors DEFINITELY saw me and I’m nervous they might call the cops. I played the clip back and realized it was a fucking sound effect you added in! Fuck me that was the most terrifying experience of my life! 😟🤣

as a car guy and an initial d fan, I love the arcade games, and I appreciate the unrealism in the games. Asseto corsa is a good realistic game for drifting, but the initial d games are just fun and rage.
my chipped slim PS2 had no problem with special stage back in the day though. and yeah special stage or Ver.2 is the best Initial D . even infinity nowadays doesn't give you the same feeling of the old school Ver.2 back in the arcade.

i hope you kept those ps2. because you can run free mcboot on memory cards and it works on Japanese ps2. i think you can even region unlock japanese ps2 with free mcboot.

That's really cool surprisingly I still have my original initial D silver key card that I had with the arcade problem is the initial D arcade machine I played on disappeared from where its current location was so I don't know what happened to but I still kept the key card
3:40 Extreme Stage is a port of arcade stage 4, like street stage being a port of arcade stage 3 and special stage being a port of arcade stage version 2. All Arcade stage games feature opponents that speed up or slow down by section. And also can't be outrun at a certain point. Some cap out at a max of 90 meters, some 250, some not at all. But this means that in sections where they speed up, you will be caught by some margin. But also Arcade Stage 4 is just very very hard. Even on the lowest difficulty levels.
My friend helped my download a psp emulator and I was able to play street stage which is the first time I played an initial d game and it was so awesome playing it !!!
to anyone who wants to play this game now, you don’t need a japanese ps2 but you do need a fat ps2, a swap magic and a tool to force the tray open, or there’s always pcsx2 both methods are relatively easy and cheaper
The only initial d game I need to play, is assetto corsa. Man I love to heel and toe downshift, I love to make the stock ae86 slide with 90s tires. It is just so fun.

As I recall it, part of Free McBoot's job was to reduce wear on both the HDD and the DVDs being launched, so a chipped system would still need FreeMcBoot anyway, as long as you wanted to preserve your laser and hdd.
Emulated it I have 3 originals ps2 but not the Japanese versions. It was really fun to play anime scenes, loved seeing Shingo crash in the mirror for example lol. Eurobeat and playing as Fujiwara made that game for me, haven't played arcade stages and other initial d games tho.
@@superboy305 Unfortunately, I played the game REALLY young and hit a wall. I think I was playing Drift 1 or 3, and I just couldn't beat this R32 on an uphill rainy stage. I probably would've easily beat him had I switched to rain tires, but my underdeveloped brain was more concerned with having fun rather than learning. I tried everything (except switch my tires). I spent all my money buying the fastest car, buying the best parts, having more hp than my opponent, but could never pass that R32. (Now that I look back on it, I remember there being several station wagons in the game, and I can't help but think of that video with the stock Subara Outback dominating a steep sandhill.) Most of my fun was spent feeling the difference between each car in Time Attack. And recreating the "gutter" drift on Haruna, but I just didn't understand cars enough to advance further in career mode. Was the ending rewarding? Or was it the journey? I remember playing Armored Core 2 and just being completely enthralled by the atmosphere. I was young playing that game, and only got to rank 70 or so. Lol
the best is the ps1 version, the ps2 version is only compatible with the first driving force steering wheel, the ps1 version is well enjoyed with the official Madcatz MC2 Playstation steering wheel

I played it last night first time in years n dam I didn't realize how unrealistic even compared to arcade stages it is lol but I must admit I love the story mode. Extreme Stage is just a port of Arcade Stage 4, the physics are approximately as janky but fewer people in the west remember IDAS v4. I only wish that the PS2 didn’t have the region locks like with PS3.
I had to get a Swap Magic 3 for the PS2 so I can play that game. But it was a great game and I played it a lot when I was a huge Initial D fan. I also played the arcade games. Not all of them though. Up to Arcade Stage Version 3.
For reference: the rerelease of the game (the The Best version) fixes the compatibility with all ps2 slim models and the game doesn't crash at all

I’ve got the same wheel too, and the pedals don’t work properly with Special Stage for me. I haven’t been able to figure out why, hoped it would get a mention in this vid, but they only seem to accelerate to about 50% so I can’t shift into high gears or beat a single opponent. So if your experience would have been like mine, you didn’t miss out haha
I’ve since gotten the pedals and have the exact same problem… Also the wheel felt super loose and clunky. I’m assuming it works with an actual disc on a Japanese PS2, and is just a weird bug with OPL or something... At least I can play a bunch of other racing games like Gran Turismo. And Tokyo Extreme Racer: Drift 2 has a lot of the same mountain roads as Initial D but is more realistic.

The problem you had on Extreme Stage it's a feature if you have watched the anime then I think you might remember about the tires losing their grip it's all about how you drive and how you drift the same goes for the AI they also have to manage it the reason why drifting feels drifting.

I use to play the shit out of this on the ps2, it was a great game. Also made it so i knew all the tracks so well that I was able to kick the crap out of everyone at the arcade with a unworked ae85 whilst they had fully worked cars. People use to trip right out

Same, I was tearing my hair out for weeks trying to figure out why it didn't work even though there weren't any scratches. But yeah if your game freezes in the opening movie then it's the slim Japanese PS2 that's causing it. The fat Japanese PS2 will fix it.

@@BlankTriggerGamers I didn't on my own. I was recruited by a local team at my arcade and trained me. It turns out, each arcade with an ID3 cabinet had their own team and does battle. Team leaders were in contact with each other to organize freindly touge's. Man your video brought so many good memories back 🥲

Dude I swear on my dead father’s SOUL I was on my downstairs toilet at 11:30PM when the KNOCK KNOCK sound effect at 5:25 hit my ears. The window in the bathroom leads to the backyard and it was pitch black out there. I called out to my pregnant wife who I’d HOPED had knocked on the bathroom door, no answer, she was asleep. I wiped my ass, jumped up and had my largest kitchen knife in my right hand within ten seconds! I Flicked on both backyard lights and psyched myself up to go out there and face the freak that was peeking on me and knocked on my bathroom window! Finally after about 3 minutes I gathered the courage and stormed outside ready to stab or slash the first person I saw!
My neighbors DEFINITELY saw me and I’m nervous they might call the cops. I played the clip back and realized it was a fucking sound effect you added in! Fuck me that was the most terrifying experience of my life! 😟🤣

as a car guy and an initial d fan, I love the arcade games, and I appreciate the unrealism in the games. Asseto corsa is a good realistic game for drifting, but the initial d games are just fun and rage.

I was like 8 when I first played Initial D Arcade Stage 5 and still one of best racing games on arcade cabinet.
I remember buying my friends molded PS2 in high school with a copy of Initial D Special Stage and Swap Magic... best $200 I spent back then lol

my chipped slim PS2 had no problem with special stage back in the day though. and yeah special stage or Ver.2 is the best Initial D . even infinity nowadays doesn't give you the same feeling of the old school Ver.2 back in the arcade.

That's really cool surprisingly I still have my original initial D silver key card that I had with the arcade problem is the initial D arcade machine I played on disappeared from where its current location was so I don't know what happened to but I still kept the key card
3:40 Extreme Stage is a port of arcade stage 4, like street stage being a port of arcade stage 3 and special stage being a port of arcade stage version 2.
All Arcade stage games feature opponents that speed up or slow down by section. And also can't be outrun at a certain point.
Some cap out at a max of 90 meters, some 250, some not at all. But this means that in sections where they speed up, you will be caught by some margin.
But also Arcade Stage 4 is just very very hard. Even on the lowest difficulty levels.

As I recall it, part of Free McBoot's job was to reduce wear on both the HDD and the DVDs being launched, so a chipped system would still need FreeMcBoot anyway, as long as you wanted to preserve your laser and hdd.

Emulated it I have 3 originals ps2 but not the Japanese versions. It was really fun to play anime scenes, loved seeing Shingo crash in the mirror for example lol. Eurobeat and playing as Fujiwara made that game for me, haven't played arcade stages and other initial d games tho.
I just went ahead and bought the arcade machine instead, cant get any more authentic than that.

@@superboy305 Unfortunately, I played the game REALLY young and hit a wall. I think I was playing Drift 1 or 3, and I just couldn't beat this R32 on an uphill rainy stage.
I probably would've easily beat him had I switched to rain tires, but my underdeveloped brain was more concerned with having fun rather than learning.
I tried everything (except switch my tires). I spent all my money buying the fastest car, buying the best parts, having more hp than my opponent, but could never pass that R32.
(Now that I look back on it, I remember there being several station wagons in the game, and I can't help but think of that video with the stock Subara Outback dominating a steep sandhill.)
Most of my fun was spent feeling the difference between each car in Time Attack. And recreating the "gutter" drift on Haruna, but I just didn't understand cars enough to advance further in career mode.

My memories of this game was it was exactly same as the early arcade games.... I played it last night first time in years n dam I didn't realize how unrealistic even compared to arcade stages it is lol but I must admit I love the story mode. It's the best story mode out of all initial d games. I'm actually talking about special stage not extreme stage

Extreme Stage is just a port of Arcade Stage 4, the physics are approximately as janky but fewer people in the west remember IDAS v4. I only wish that the PS2 didn’t have the region locks like with PS3.

I had to get a Swap Magic 3 for the PS2 so I can play that game. But it was a great game and I played it a lot when I was a huge Initial D fan. I also played the arcade games. Not all of them though. Up to Arcade Stage Version 3.
