It’s been 30 years since Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras and Plácido Domingo made their historic debut as The Three Tenors at the ancient baths of Caracalla on the eve of the 1990 Football World Cup. Three Tenors: Voices for Eternity celebrates the emotional highlights of that first concert and the sequel in Los Angeles. With brand new interviews and never-before-seen backstage footage, this documentary offers a fascinating insight into the rivalries and friendships of the legendary opera stars from 1990 through to Pavarotti's passing in 2007.

What they don't show here is when, at the start of the song, when Pavarotti introduced Sinatra in the audience, and the camera cuts to Frank in the audience. Ol' Blue Eyes stands and immediately stumbles back, almost into his seat. He fell because he was tipsy if not outright drunk. And that's partially on me. I was a bartender in the pre-show VIP tent just outside the stadium and watched he and his wife arrive through the tent entrance to much commotion, then going from one bar set-up to the next (there were about six stations along the interior perimeter), without stopping at any for more than a few seconds. Finally, Frank and his wife headed to my station, and I knew exactly what he was looking for and not finding. Frank was a legendary drinker of Jack Daniels, but we were only serving beer and wine before the show. So before he said anything to me, I explained the situation and asked him to give me five minutes. I ran off and darted into the other VIP tent, where the after-show VIP dinner would be served, and quickly told my boss I needed a bottle of Jack. Before he could argue, I said, "It's for Frank Sinatra." That's all it took, and he handed me a bottle from the case at his feet. When I rushed back to Sinatra, he seemed very impressed as I poured him a plastic cup with Jack on the rocks. He quickly downed it, then two more right after that, then looked me in the eye and offered a sincere thanks and a handshake. He and his wife then walked off, him quite buzzed after three generous shots of his favorite liquor. He watched me pour, so what followed was entirely on him. A while later, I watched him on the monitor as he was introduced, only to stand, lose his balance and stumble back almost to his seat. Wasted. By the way, Sinatra was famous for his $100 tips. that he would hand to any server person who did anything for him, including doormen just for opening a door for him. Given his generous reputation, I'll admit I was surprised that he left me nothing, but it was a catering event, so it didn't bother me. But I did get the amusing memory of him falling backward, drunk off his (bleep).

Ese fue el concierto emblemático de Los Angeles al final del campeonato mundial de fútbol de 1994, el de Italia tenía las termas de fondo. Fue una década emblemática para los que la pudimos vivir de cultura, prosperidad, alegría y libertad.

As the conductor enthusiastically swings his arms around none of the performers are even looking at him. Its so corny its ridiculous.

The conductor is for the orchestra, not the singers.
