To have Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly in the audience, that must have been one heck of a treat. You could tell Frank was touched and Gene was touched as well. What a special moment for those in the crowd.

This was at a time when Sinatra's health was declining rapidly, and he was basically unable to perform live due to dementia-like symptoms. It is very touching indeed to see him honored in this way.
I also love the expression on Domingo's face in the beginning. You can tell he is looking at Sinatra, and smiling. The three are visibly proud to sing this song for him.

Luciano Pavarotti, the best opera singer ever!
There's no such thing as "the best". Each one has a different strength. Domingo has the richest voice ever. It's like chocolate cake. Pavarotti had the sexiest voice color for sure, pure beauty in the high registry. But the list is huge. There's not one single best of all. Pavarotti sure was the one who made many of us find our way into opera, but after him, you just find more and more names.

To have the original performers of the songs in tears is very hard to do. So perfect I can’t even put it into words.

I will state though that your words" pretender to the throne" are Logically and metaphorically incorrect. There can be no throne for a king of Tenor(dom) Furthermore Pavarotti never claimed he was the best , which is the closest towards aspirations of self proclaimed king of tenors.
If you must lambast Pavarotti, do it to us the fans who are so in love with him. We like what we like, and love of music is so very subjective. Please, let us honor all our idols and loves by trying to stick to some facts.
