i had a thought, if you changed the position of you switch to the start of the clutch press cycle not the end you shouldnt get the rev jump between gears
I think it would be interesting to link the brake pedal to the on/off flat foot shift switch so that it'll automatically turn off when you brake to enable heel and toe while being on otherwise to keep the turbo spooled, I haven't seen anyone do that yet though
Do you need an aftermarket tps (throttle position sensor) in an earlier Miata (90-93) to setup launch control??? Please help!! I've been reading but can't find much anywhere:(
The Broke and Boosted series got me to go get mine. 10k miles and < 3 months later, I'm in love with this little car, and that's before I've got a snail in it. DO IT! :)
question? on the flat foot shifting getting in the way of heal/toe, could you add a interrupter type switch to the break pedal so whenever you're on the brake it disables the flat shift causing you to heal/toe in a normal fashion then when your back on the gas you have your flat shifting again?. Just a thought so you wouldnt have to physically do anything.
Yes. The only issue with that is if you're just rev-matching without braking, it will still interfere. (I do that when exiting a highway or if traffic starts to slow down, etc)
You could also have a button and install it on your shifter or something similar to his toggle switch to where you could have it on all the time, but it will disable it if you press a button on your shifter as you are doing a maneuver.
have you ever thought hooking up a switch the the brake pedal (or using the stock brake switch) to open the circuit instead? Would probably allow some awesome flat foot action, without interfering with you heal tow (rev matching). its something I've worked out a few years ago, but never had time to implement.
That's a genius idea. The only thing it wouldn't prevent is 2-step interfering with rev-match downshifting without the brake pedal (Like downshifting to pass on the highway).
+TheCarPassionChannel True, hadn't thought about that. Apart from having all over the freezing place, you got to use what's best for you. (Could use a "NOS" button on the steering wheel for a press to pass, Fast and furious stile! lol)
Just an idea that I had for you about this switch on the dashboard what if you were to use in Old headlight dimmer switch from a car from the 70s era that's mounted on the floor put it right next for you to put it on the left foot rest at the top then that way you could hit it real for hit it real quick with your foot
This is awesome. Any way to set it up to 'disable' flat foot shifting/launch based on braking? This way you could use it on a road course/track day but not have to manually intercept it.
There are a couple ways you could do this, I used to have a physical switch that would activate/deactivate it so if I was canyon running or AX etc, I could just turn it off. Now that you mention it, I think you could put such a switch somewhere on the brake pedal arm so it would deactivate under braking only, allowing free revs for downshifts. Good idea!
I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I want to do megasquirt on my z31 300zx na and I’d like to do my own harness and of course have 2 step and all that good stuff. What do I need and how can I learn how to do all of the tuning?
So one of my wires from my clutch switch goes to the ms2 clutch switch Lin or the launch control pin. I have the 26 pin ms2 pnp. I thought one wire from clutch switch goes to ground. And the other one just goes into the ms2.. I just don't know if it goes to the clutch switch pin or launch control pin
+Bobbie Wahab I haven't had it on the dyno, but looking at several virtial dyno pulls it's around the 260whp mark at only 12psi. I'm not going to push it too hard until I get on the dyno.
Hey cool videos, I have a question, leaving only spark cut will let injectors still working. So fuel will be kind of "washing" the lubrication out of the cylinders if it's not ignited and the friction between piston rings and walls will increase a lot? I am not sure if I'm wrong, but this sound like bad idea for the engine, what do you think?
how come in the parking lot at 8:39 you dont shoot clean flames and in general, your exhaust shoots out so much smog when it shoots out flames? and for when do you use the switch to activate and deactivate launch and flat shift?? love the video!
It shoots flames more when the exhaust is hot, and the car had been sitting for a while. The black smoke is burnt fuel. I turn off LC/FFS when I do autocross or canyon running because it interferes with rev-matching.
to make sure I understand, at 5:10 you talk about launch control working when you're in neutral. But we've got 2 different rev limiters, one for when we're in neutral and one for when the clutch is in? So to test this we'd need to set the rev limiter for clutch in below the limiter for neutral, and then try to gas it in neutral, with the clutch both out and in? I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here. Help?
No, I was explaining a flaw with MS there. Whether you have launch control active, or both launch control AND flatshift active, they both should only rely on the clutch and not be affected by the shifter's position.
I got the flaw and the need to check the crossed wires. I was just trying to figure out how we see if boost control turns on while in neutral. Can't exactly test it by launching in neutral :)
james Thaddeus You don't need to lanch the car to test the launch control rev limiter. You put the car in neutral and hit the throttle. If the LC rev limit is activated, you need to switch up the harness routing.
I got it working on my 97 - great fun :) - the clutch switch is independent. I want to set it up on my friends 95 miata, is it the same setup as yours ? short the clutch switch and wire the neutral switch as the input on MS ? Why can't just short the natural switch and use the clutch switch as your input ? Thanks !
Can you make a switch that turns on/off spark cut only? I want to be able to be loud when needed but be able to downshift when I’m cruising in the hills. If you can you should make a tutorial!
Hey Greg ,I need some help I got a 93 miata with pnp2 and I just got the flying Miata vtps. I installed it and I even flipped the wires like people have said to do and I got no reading on my ecu. I have jumper on the variable pins on the ecu and still no change. I can’t figure this out. Please help !!
I have a 1.8 NA. So all I would do is just unplug the neutral safety switch? I have bought a block off plate to block the clutch switch so I could start the car without the clutch (switch on firewall, not the one above). Would that matter?
So probably a noob question here but I'm trying to make 2 step work on my MS2PNP on my Nissan but Everytime it engages and i launch the car it kicks back on and doesn't let me rev over the value i have set? I have the clutch switch wired to my clutch switch input on my options port
So realistically flat foot shooting shouldn't be any harder on the transmission as long you're not dumping the clutch right? Seems that it could be useful without having to slam gears if so
I actually let the clutch out very quickly on a flat shift. What saves the trans is as the clutch is starting to engage there's still no power from the motor, it doesn't come back on until your foot is higher up. It really works better to do it more quickly.
@@TheCarPassionChannel that clears it up so much thanks, so it's no rougher on the transmission than quick shifting and letting off the throttle just with the benefit of you dont have to re build the boost!
@@TheCarPassionChannel I got mine setup today but it's a little funky on our speeduino terminology. I have it set to arm over 3k but then it has the soft rev window option and says recommended 100-1000 I gotta tinker with it cause when I shift at 3500 testing it itll jump to 3700rpm
I ran straight E85 for the first year, ended up going Flex because E85 pumps are few and far between I like to drive the car to work and back. Easy install, not bad to tune takes some fiddling which is what we like to do :). I used GM # 13577429..
+TheCarPassionChannel MS3x currently. I came across a 3X really cheap on eBay, someone had given up their project. I was using MS2 a few years ago. it's not on a miata though, I have a sr20 powered 240sx. I've been using megasquirt since the ms1 on a Mazda mx6 turbo. I really believe that megasquirt has taught me more about cars than anything.
My megasquirt is arriving this week so this video could not have come at a better time! Thanks buddy, enjoying your videos very much. Also quick question, would it be detrimental if my ecu receives a permanent clutch-out signal? What I mean is, when you intercept the signal to trick the ecu, does it affect anything else? fuel/spark tables, cruise etc. etc.
+TheCarPassionChannel Trying to word this is harder than it should be haha. When you turn your switch off so that Launch/FS no longer activates, this is because the ecu is tricked into thinking the clutch is 'out' or not depressed, so the entire time you drive with that switch off, the ecu believes the clutch is not being pressed, even if it is. Did that make more sense?
Okay cool that's exactly what I wanted to know, thanks. I wassn't sure what the ecu really uses the clutch switch for apart from launch/FS but I guess nothing is the answer haha.
Clutch switch and neutral switch wiring issue... many manufacturers wire the car for auto and manual and use the same harness. This may be the source of that issue.
hey Greg, ive been working on my 1990 1.6 miata and i bought an assembled DIY ms2 from diyauto and after wiring up my harness im not getting any tac signal.. and my ms2 is not seeing any tac either and giving me an error. and in turn the car is not starting...all the wiring diagrams for 1.6's from the internet are different... do you know or have a diagram that will work?
I just set up a MSD 6al box and the 2 step on a 94 mustang GT... I tried -5° and +20° timing spark cut only and either way it sounds like a 50cal... I’ve had 2 steps on other cars all straight piped but never anything like this!!! I’m gonna try spark/fuel cut and see if it’s not so bad... it’s so loud right now it hurts 😂
That's what they get for having school on a Saturday!!!!!!!!!!! (I was considering night time but I figured everyone would be out partying). A large portion of the followers are in the U.S. so I figured that'd be the best time to do it.
You didn't get it quite right. Launch control builds boost on full throttle when you're standing still. antilag builds boost when the car is rolling and the throttle plate is fully closed and it needs an extra air supply to get air for the combustion in the exhaust manifold when you shut the throttle plate. I am building antilag on my Sierra Cosworth and I'm going to use a modified idle control valve to supply the extra air. I allready have the anti lag wired and enabled in the ECU but it doesn't work yet because it doesn't get enough air through the stock ICV.
+TheCarPassionChannel That's probably why it's called 2-step. Mostly just a second rev limiter. Allmost no one uses that in Sweden. It's boost building launch control or nothing. I have launch control on my Cosworth. It shoots flames and builds boost. But no antilag yet.
Want to get ecu and minor mods before turboing and tune car up/do maintainence before I dump money into the turbo set up, would I still be able to make noises and flames without turbo? Lol and have 2 step/launch controll on a switch. Sorry for my basic ass question 😅
For some reason it activates without my clutch pushed in. It will activate even if I'm just driving and i hit that rpm. For some reason selecting launch as my input will send me a error and my car won't start. I know i have a clutch sensor but it looks like it's pushed in all the time when the clutch isn't pushed in. Any suggestions for what I should do?
I know this vid is 5 years old but I’m trying to get a miata as a first car. What year do you recommend and what are things I should look out for when buying one or owning it?
I have an even older video called "how to buy a used Miata" that's got some tips in it. As far as the year, it depends on if you plan to modify it and if you like the NA or NB body style. Basically the newer engines are a little more powerful and make more power with mods. The 1990-1991 have a "short nose" 1.6 that's less desirable due to possible crank failure if neglected.
if the car has ABS can you use the sensor s and setup a kind of antispin?? do you know if the megasquirt is capable of doing it with these 90 s electronics????
Your launch RPM seems a bit low. How high have you been able to set it on the street before you lose all traction? How about on the strip? What RPM was it set to there? Have you messed around with the soft limit timing to see if you can improve it? I had mine set low as well but I never really played around with how high I could go. I am not one to launch on the street but I like knowing I can.
I usually have it set between 3500-4200 depending on the surface. My clutch is close enough to the torque limit that is I slip it too hard, it won't hold in 2nd gear. It's also interesting on a boosted car because power output is not directly related to throttle position, so I wouldn't say there's a "perfect" RPM to launch at with so many variables. I launched at 3000 in this video just to demonstrate the function, and the lot surface was very slick.

+TheCarPassionChannel so whenever you want to do rev matching or heel and toe you have to have it off?
Felipe Rivadeneira I mean you don't have to... but if your LC rpm is 3500 you won't be able to rev-match above 3500 which is pretty useless.
+TheCarPassionChannel
gotcha
thanks "Craig"😂
love the videos like always
to make sure I understand, at 5:10 you talk about launch control working when you're in neutral.
Maby i missed it but is this only for turbos, or for naturally aspirated too
s12c and js9 needs to have a jumper, i use a ms3x idk if the others need it
I have a 1991 miata and I’m confused about 2- step what do I need to have it or how?
Exactly what kit and components did you purchase for the mega squirt program and ecu? I would like to know for my car. Thanks man. Keep it up.
MS2PnP with IAT kit and Serial - USB adaptor. Mega Log Viewer and Tuner Studio MS both have free versions, but I have the registered versions.
Thanks !
I have no idea, seems like each year has a different problem with the launch control circuit.
Can you make a switch that turns on/off spark cut only? I want to be able to be loud when needed but be able to downshift when I’m cruising in the hills. If you can you should make a tutorial!
Very easy, just wire a simple on/off switch into the clutch signal wire. Used to run that same exact setup.
I subbed cause I love ur info n miata. :)
So probably a noob question here but I'm trying to make 2 step work on my MS2PNP on my Nissan but Everytime it engages and i launch the car it kicks back on and doesn't let me rev over the value i have set? I have the clutch switch wired to my clutch switch input on my options port
This is Mega Awesome!
What pin is the clutch wire on? I'll be running a microsquirt on an LS swap 944, I'll have to wire in a clutch switch
*_Awesome video! I like it_*
Greg, great video love the channel, but i have a NC, do you know any channels out there that have content like yours but for the NC?
@@CuttinChris Yep! As long as it's tuned and used properly. You'll know... You will be amazed how smooth the shift actually is when it hits right
@@TheCarPassionChannel thanks man I appreciate it a bunch!
!very nice! We need more budget megasquirt people around! Go e85, use GM sensor and crank up the timing! ohh it was worth it for me..
I run straight E85 without a flex sensor. And yes, very worth it.
I ran straight E85 for the first year, ended up going Flex because E85 pumps are few and far between I like to drive the car to work and back. Easy install, not bad to tune takes some fiddling which is what we like to do :). I used GM # 13577429..
Detonation MS2 or MS3?
+TheCarPassionChannel MS3x currently. I came across a 3X really cheap on eBay, someone had given up their project. I was using MS2 a few years ago. it's not on a miata though, I have a sr20 powered 240sx. I've been using megasquirt since the ms1 on a Mazda mx6 turbo. I really believe that megasquirt has taught me more about cars than anything.
Detonation Me too, I owe a lot of my education to MS.
My megasquirt is arriving this week so this video could not have come at a better time! Thanks buddy, enjoying your videos very much.
Also quick question, would it be detrimental if my ecu receives a permanent clutch-out signal? What I mean is, when you intercept the signal to trick the ecu, does it affect anything else? fuel/spark tables, cruise etc. etc.
+iXiiN I'm not sure what you mean by a permanent clutch-out signal?
+TheCarPassionChannel Trying to word this is harder than it should be haha.
When you turn your switch off so that Launch/FS no longer activates, this is because the ecu is tricked into thinking the clutch is 'out' or not depressed, so the entire time you drive with that switch off, the ecu believes the clutch is not being pressed, even if it is.
Did that make more sense?
iXiiN You're asking if that affects anything? No it does not. At least not on my setup.
Okay cool that's exactly what I wanted to know, thanks. I wassn't sure what the ecu really uses the clutch switch for apart from launch/FS but I guess nothing is the answer haha.
iXiiN To my knowledge, nothing important.
Clutch switch and neutral switch wiring issue... many manufacturers wire the car for auto and manual and use the same harness. This may be the source of that issue.
hey Greg, ive been working on my 1990 1.6 miata and i bought an assembled DIY ms2 from diyauto and after wiring up my harness im not getting any tac signal.. and my ms2 is not seeing any tac either and giving me an error. and in turn the car is not starting...all the wiring diagrams for 1.6's from the internet are different... do you know or have a diagram that will work?
so by doing the jumper at 4:27, do you have to have the clutch suppressed to start the car?
No, which is beneficial to the health of the thrust bearing as well.
+TheCarPassionChannel I was thinking more along the lines of installing an automatic starter at that point. but that's just me.
I just set up a MSD 6al box and the 2 step on a 94 mustang GT... I tried -5° and +20° timing spark cut only and either way it sounds like a 50cal... I’ve had 2 steps on other cars all straight piped but never anything like this!!! I’m gonna try spark/fuel cut and see if it’s not so bad... it’s so loud right now it hurts 😂
finally decided i needed to subscribe
thinking about buying a 94 95 Miata are 5 speed what do you think of it is it a good platform to build for semi drifting and Street driving
What made you go with mega squirt vs. adaptronic I know on the forums there is controversy over which one is the best to run?
Way more turbo Miata people run MS than anything else, so I figured that would be the best way to go.
Is this only for OBD1 megasquirt or will this work on OBDII as well?
Thanks for this video, it's so useful...
can you please change the time to the afternoon. A lot of people have school around that time. thanks you for reading, love the videos keep it up.
That's what they get for having school on a Saturday!!!!!!!!!!! (I was considering night time but I figured everyone would be out partying). A large portion of the followers are in the U.S. so I figured that'd be the best time to do it.
Okay, that's understand able. Thanks for replying quickly.
What wheels do you have on both of your miatas?
+GasPedalGarage Rota Grid Concave, Enkei RPF1 replicas
TheCarPassionChannel Appreciate it man! We love your videos keep it up! Building our miata to a track car, and your videos are very helpful!
GasPedalGarage Awesome man good to hear!
+cossiedrifter This style of launch control will not build boost with the car standing still.
+TheCarPassionChannel That's probably why it's called 2-step. Mostly just a second rev limiter. Allmost no one uses that in Sweden. It's boost building launch control or nothing. I have launch control on my Cosworth. It shoots flames and builds boost. But no antilag yet.
+TheCarPassionChannel But the system you use looks like "real" launc control (my definition).
@TheCarPassionChannel 9:46 is it the same wiring for a nbfl vvt miata?
What if I am running meth tune that is activated with boost preasure ? Spark or fuel cut ?
MS3 definitely has traction control, but I don't know if it can use the ABS sensors, you may have to install aftermarket vehicle speed sensors.
Hey Greg t.j here from Phoenix next to Mike the Miata king. At Miatameca I have a 94 1.8 turbo Miata with a ms2 PNP full program of tunerstuido. I have a db26 connector to add stuff so I tried to setup lunch control by hard wireing in to a switch to turn on and off using clutch switch and the lunch control but the switch is not working when I turned lunch control on it's always on clutch in or out luanch control is always on but I trying to make it work at the flip of a switch any ideas hope to here back
This may be a stupid question but Can you have flat foot shifting on a Naturally aspirated setup
Cody McCarty yep
TheCarPassionChannel thank you brother I'm planning on getting a 1.8L motor with a dry sump, 2.1L stroker, 262 cams, and ITBS btw I'm so excited I'm slowly accumulating the parts though
Hot damn thats cool features. My car weirdly has that launch thingy stock.
