I'm excited for Spearhead as a way to introduce new people to AOS and look forward to giving it a go. I'd love it to be something that takes off and is hopefully akin to something like Magic where different formats are supported and enjoyed by different people. My biggest concern is the board size but I'm going in with an open mind. I am sure I will progress on to full AOS after, but it would be great if it is something that is good enough to keep going back to.
The fact that the game is on a really very small board is intriguing!
I've been playing 40K since 4th edition, and quit Warhammer fantasy battle in 7th edition. Dabbled with age of Sigmar when it first came out and haven't touched it since. Pretty much full focused financially and energy-wise into 40k. Either as purchases or already having the models, I have at least seven combat patrols and play them each week with my girlfriend. I really don't want to invest any money in spearhead but I too am curious about it. Digging through my closet of shame I found several age of Sigmar start collecting boxes. So I can field blades of Khorne and I just need to pick up some kroxigors to make the seraphon spearhead. They are the old sculpts but I can field slaves to darkness... Anyway, I don't plan to get into age of sigmar, so having the ability to get to the table and play some spearhead periodically should be fun.
I was thinking earlier today, it's easy to think of the new Skaventide box as an age of Sigmar launchbox that comes with a spearhead book, but perhaps it's a spearhead launch box that comes with an age of Sigmar rulebook...
With all the free rules I don't need the book. I ordered the cards and game board off eBay this afternoon. I will supply my own terrain.

There is a UA-cam channel called "Empire of Wargames" who focuses and plays a lot on Combat Patrol. He also talks about his local FLGS that frequently runs Combat Patrol Tournaments so there certainly are people like that. 😀
Yes, I am familiar with Empire of Wargames, I always wonder about how big his group actually is.

GW makes money from selling models. Spearhead/combat patrol is good enough to interest people in bigger game and sell more models. Its also in a good price place to trigger fomo and get bought + trigger sunk cost fallacy after the purchase.
But dont take this a critique, more hobby for us!
Well, Fomo not so much because at least the spearheads and combat patrols stay in stock, unlike the battleforces. But otherwise I agree, yes.

This seems vanishingly unlikely.
I just don’t see how a game that starts the two sides in charge range of each other is going to be an interesting, repeatable, experience. It just feels like the board is going to be extremely crowded, with little opportunity for maneuver.

I feel like the combat patrols (& likely Spearheads) are an exercise in one of those graphs where you plot lots of attributes on a scale of 1-5 & get some very wonky looking stars (think personality tests). I don’t think it’s possible to consistently balance the effectiveness of a selection of minis, the value said minis, & satisfy the accountants. I think at best you get two of those.
Now, the FOMO Battleforce boxes are 110% intended to clear out back-stock in the warehouse while selling a brand new mini. If they prove to be high value or very effective it’s pure happenstance IMO.
It is really difficult with the spearheads and combat patrols, yes you can almost see the dead hand of the accountant. Not sure I agree on the FOMO boxes, last two previewed have been very tightly themed to specific detachments in the upcoming box.
I don't see who this is for. If Underworlds and Warcry are as good as I hear that's skirmish/Kill Team sized games covered. I know its not a huge investment for Geedubz but supporting three low model count tactical games for AoS sounds odd to me.
I have heard it said that maybe Underworlds is going away because like four people play it.
Fair. I played quite a lot of it at launch, I bounced off the competitive scene because of the pay-to-win (cards locked behind purchases which incidentally also drove me out of X Wing) but I remember playing it as a 4x4 over beers and takeaway and it was a really fun game.
