I'm a brand new chameleon owner. I really appreciate all time and effort you put into creating these videos; they are fantastic! I had planned for a Veiled, but purchased a four month old Jackson's (complete impulse buy) at a recent expo (08/15/20). I'm jumping into this adventure on the deep end, lol. Your advice has been extremely helpful, so thank you!
Congrats on joining the cham fam! And I’m happy to hear the videos are helpful :) I would make sure to get your chameleon tested for parasites since most Jackson’s sold at expos tend to be wild caught.
We absolutely fell in love with a pied Veiled Chameleon at a chain pet store and I'll never forget him. He was as close to the front of the enclosure as he could get, reaching out with his front feet wanting to be picked up and held. As much as we loved him and had thought about and researched getting one anyway, we knew of course it would not be fair for us or the animal to basically impulse buy a chameleon. We know they are a commitment, and are expensive to care for plus we rent so that would not have been a great idea. As tempting as it was, it wasn't the right time. I've been considering getting a chameleon for a while now and I think I have found my goto source for the information I need to prepare. Great videos! My channel has always been about aquariums and fish, but I am increasingly interested in reptiles.
@@NeptunetheChameleon I just watched the video you provided in your original response. you stated that bugs or bug parts could end up in the water and that could cause a nasty water situation. I come from the aquarium world where water is filtered and the filtration is supplemented by the fish, plants, and invertebrates that reside in the water column/system. The critters (fish included) will eat any excess waste that the chameleons will produce. I am talking about a small water pool at the bottom of a 60" tall enclosure with a small waterfall mid way down that would mainly be there for the purposes of water filtration. I might even have the water flow over dense moss to filter even more. I guess what I am getting at is whether or not chameleons are in any danger of drowning or the like if presented with standing water?
Great video! Love all your videos, very informative! Just got my first chameleon yesterday, its a baby panther and I absolutely love it! I'm not sure its sex but I hope its a male, so I've been calling it Pablo Picasso
I got my 6 year old, male, vieled cham for free from my neighbor. However, with needing to completely get him a new enclosure, lighting, heating, and him coming to me malnourished with a URI. I have probably spent 600$ USD in the past month. Now, to me, it is completely worth it because (unlike the stereotype) my Jingo is the nicest chameleon I ever met. "Puppydog tame" is the best term to describe him.
No. You will still need a T5 HO UVB regardless of cage size. That cage is too small for most chameleon species. For a veiled or panther chameleon you'll what the XL Zoo Med cage. Here is my video about UVB: ua-cam.com/video/5RVjgaLsWn8/v-deo.html Here is my video about cage size: ua-cam.com/video/9P0uSEoFxTA/v-deo.html
i’m getting my first chameleon this Monday! he’s a male panther chameleon and i’ve done tons and tons of research to make sure i can take care him as best as i can! :D
Hmm it should be manageable if you use a hybrid enclosure. The current recommendation for panther chameleons is 50-60% during the day and 70%+ at night.
Great video my first was a male veild chameleon and yea you do grow a strong bond I sure did with my chameleon and very educational and my chameleon is very friendly
I am first owner of a veil your video have helped me tremendously on getting his cage set up! I have followed a majority of your advice that you recommended. Silly type of question but where did you get your tables to set the cages on? I feel like I need to raise my cage higher off the ground? Thx
Mine came out of his cage at Petsmart right up my arm and sat on my shoulder and looked at me. Saying "I am yours now!!" Then he came home and no longer wants anything to do with anyone. Very stubborn but one of the neatest animals I have ever owned.
How do chameleons do with bodies of water? could you have a tall enclosure with the bottom having a pool of water? I was thinking of having a tall enclosure with a foam 3D background, live plants, vines, branches, plants, etc. while also having basically a small aquarium at the bottom that has a water fall going from the top of the enclosure to the bottom and back again. I'm still trying to figure out what is realistic. if I could give you an idea of what I am thinking of I would refer you to SerpaDesigns here on youtube, I'm sure you have heard of him. To put a point on this comment I really just want to know if pools of water might be bad for chameleons?
To answer your question, pools of water in a chameleon enclosure would be a very bad idea. Waterfalls are also a bad idea, and any other forms of standing water due to their increased risk of growing bacteria. Not to mention chameleons are not aquatic animals in the slightest 😅. The only recommended water sources/features for a chameleon are a misting system, fogger, and a dripper. I'd recommend you check out my video about water and chameleons: ua-cam.com/video/3nD9lT17D9c/v-deo.html Having a 3D background, live plants, vines, branches, etc. are all great ideas and great options. I would just not do the waterfall and water at the bottom.
@@NeptunetheChameleon thank you for the response! I have had a lot of conflicting opinions about this from people that I would not consider experts. My main goal is to keep any animals I keep healthy and happy. This actually saves me a lot of money, work, and disappointment, lol. Thank you for your response, and I will check out that link you provided! keep up the good work!
No chameleon species should not be handled often. But if you have proper care, and a chameleon with a good temperament, then they should be able to be handled for short durations (5-10 min).
I bought my veiled chameleon from Petco 3 days ago and when i was trying to take it out of the box it decided it didn't want to go into the enclosure it wanted to crawl on me no hissing no puffing and his eyes stayed open! I haven't handled it since but i think i got lucky.
Ehhh they are usually wild caught and have lots of issues as a result. I think you're better off buying an established species from a reputable breeder.
@@NeptunetheChameleon I personally know somebody breeds Brookesia decaryi. And thinking about purchase a pair from him. Do you think this would be a good option for Chameleon beginner? Thanks
Are those all live plants in the enclosures behind you or are their some silk leave vines mixed in as well, doing extensive research before I purchase a veiled chameleon.
Live plants are the safest option for a veiled chameleon since they are known to eat live plants. If you choose to use fake plants, make sure they are silk leaves and not hard plastic.
ive had my heart set on getting a veiled chameleon for about 6 years now, finally have the money to build a 4ft tall 3feet wide 2 feet length mesh cage, im buying hibiscus, ficus, pothos, and some yuccas for the plants, and im gonna be kitting out the cage with all the fancy tech lol, i plan on spending around $1000 on the cage and setup alone, i am so excited to finally get it in about 2 weeks!! its going to be a male veiled chameleon
I already have a Chameleon cage and set up and I have a great vet that attends to our water dragons - I would choose the cheaper of the two only because its my personal "baby" for my office desk - I have the best spot and dont want to spend $300 on a pet - I can afford the cage, I can afford the vet and do - I can and do raise feeders and STILL dont want to pay $300 for reptile regardless of the species they are pets - Im not breeding, Im not selling Im enjoying them and I can do that with a $60 that I now can afford to spoil monthly!!
I love my panther chameleon he’s a yellow body blue bar he’s 3 months and I knew what I was getting myself into but honestly beat purchase ever they are so funny and beautiful.
This may sound dumb and be conditional stuff but I live in Indonesia and was thinking of getting a chameleon as a pet and i always wondered if its a good place for a chameleon to be living in my household (Ps my love for chameleon started when i found out theres a local chameleon breeder in my city and i visit their place Alot and ever since then i got “poisoned” into liking chameleons)
I have a veiled and was told Karma was a male but I don’t see any foot spur and his/her tail is pretty narrow at the base so now I’m in total denial because I did not want a female whatsoever. Love her or him anyway but I totally agree with what you said about chameleons. You will spend hours every day caring for them and mine wants nothing to do with me so he is pretty much an expensive home decor kind of pet 😂 Neptune is so handsome
What kind of chameleon do you have? Only veiled chameleons have tarsal spurs. I'd suggest watching this video on egg laying where I also talk about how to sex veiled and panther chameleons: ua-cam.com/video/Dy6sIPvNGUw/v-deo.html
@@NeptunetheChameleon yes she is a veiled chameleon. I did watch your video! That and a few others is how I realized he is most likely a she. My friend who is a reptile expert says from photos he believe Karma is around 6 months old so I’m hoping I have some time but I will be following your method when she is ready to lay.
Let me first start off by saying. Your chameleons are amazing. Also as far as me. I always had a passion for chameleons and other lizards. I always loved reptiles. As a young kid i always was fascinated with dinosaurs and realizing that reptiles and the descendants of dinosaurs. I always wanted a chameleon as a little kid. Than i discovered iguanas and i wanted one of them and finally had 4 of them. They can out grow your house. Lol but yes i also noticed you've named your chameleon Neptune. Thats cool. I have bearded dragons. I just got my orange hypo yesterday. And my oldest bearded dragon is named Jupiter. And my new beardie is named Mars. I was goin to get a chameleon. But they just require too much for me. Im a busy man. So i wouldn be able to take care of them like i want. Bearded dragons are more simpler to manage. I love chameleons. But i cant get one cuz of the required maintenance. But yours is amazing. I love lizards. They some amazing animals
I want to thank you 🙏.. I'm a beginner. You've been very helpful give a lot of information. I barely got my chameleon about a week ago he's a veiled chameleons I had bought the chameleon kitBut I'm so glad I I found your UA-cam channel and it helped me a lot to understand more about the chameleon his name is Gary and I threw out all the fake plants and I went i planned for him also got some Vines where he's everywhere now I felt like I was losing him so once I make the change I could see he's more comfortable he's changing colors like a nice green 💚 color it was actually turning like gray I got so scared😢😮. So yeah so I didn't mean I did make changes on his habitat and I think that's what's making things better for him he's actually exploring it right now he's everywhere he's more active I could see he's opened up his eyes now for really want to thank you because your tips been very helpful like I said I barely got my commander about a week my son was the one with the idea I was not I didn't realize what I was getting into but once I did I was like oh my God they're really hiring maintenance and I got him now I have to you know so I'm trying to make the best safe and healthy habitat for him and you know I'm wishing for the best but thank you very much
Can you do a jacksons chameleon care guide ive done qwite a bit of research at this point , however i value your opinion. If you have done one can you link it for me ?
I haven’t made one yet. But I’d suggesting checking out the Chameleon Academy care guide in the meantime: chameleonacademy.com/the-jacksons-chameleon-trioceros-jacksonii/
It's hard to find a captive bred Jackson's chameleon which means they're usually wild caught and can have parasites. There's also not a lot of good info about Jackson's chameleons since they are not as commonly kept as other species. This is a good resource to check out: chameleonacademy.com/jacksons-chameleon-care/
I love my Veiled Chameleon... I certainly didn't get him cause they're cheaper or not so friendly... I got him cause I definitely enjoy watching him I've only handled him twice an that was to go to the vet...
OK I guess I have a ton of questions because I want to get a panther chameleon a nose by to be exact and people say glass cages are no nose that the mesh cages are better and I honestly just want to get the right cage For my Chamaeleon I want to get all the things I need for him before I get him I’ve been watching your videos but honestly I still have so many questions please help
Deciding between a screen or glass enclosure depends on what environment you have where you live, and the species of chameleon you plan on keeping. There are also hybrid enclosures that are a happy in-between option. I strongly you suggest using the search bar on my channel -- I have over 60 videos about chameleons. The chameleonacademy.com is also a GREAT resource as well as the chameleonforums.com.
Brayan Gonzalez Definitely a bad thing, and typically a sign of a sick chameleon as discussed in this video: ua-cam.com/video/bUauDt_0p_c/v-deo.html I’d watch my 5 common mistakes new keepers make video: ua-cam.com/video/6TGeqZYZfH8/v-deo.html and top 5 videos for new keepers: ua-cam.com/play/PLBkCuo7YecLbG_MB7ogFmcoWP2GUXDIGJ.html
They are such awesome creatures but they can be expensive to keep with their vivariums and setup/care requirements but they (or any other pet) never ask to come into our homes. I am able to set aside some of my wages every month in a small fund to take care of my boys Ziggy, Merlin and my Degu Bo with any vet bills and so forth. I understand this may not be a viable option for some people but it works for me.

@@denisbouchard4207 It's common to not see chameleons drink. As long as her urates are cream/white then you know she is hydrated. Rabbit food is not a good gutload. 300 lol? Can I have the website your shopping on ? Cause I seen them for 300 but with a 80$ shipping then with taxes comes to over 400 then a lot of websites charge 50 extra if you want a male lol
The only problem I have is haveing insects like dubia roaches nooooo if I don't like crickets then I'm good I know there really good but I don't like insects my cousin gave me my chameleon
If you don’t see yourself being about to deal with live bugs and insects then you may need to consider rehoming the chameleon. They need a variety of live insects to stay healthy. I use tongs to handle my bugs and that makes me feel better about dealing with them :)
I love ur info and videos but I think it’s really obvious you repeat a lot “a chameleon is not the pet for u” not very encouraging for the people who already have them trying to learn new things. Gives others doubt
Unfortunately I've seen hundreds of chameleons die from keepers who were unaware of the care involved in taking care of a chameleon. I don't know which video of mine they're going to see first, so I make it a point to talk about it often and frequently because I know it can prevent chameleon deaths. But I am also aware lots of people find my videos after they already have purchased a chameleon which is totally fine too. That's why I have put in MANY hours into creating free content to help keepers learn how to care for these amazing creatures. I wouldn't make my videos in the first place if I wasn't supportive of people trying to learn and care for their chameleons 😅. I'm always happy to help chameleon keepers of all experience levels.

Yes! I actually made a video about different ways to increase humidity levels: ua-cam.com/video/kNhWocyfJAo/v-deo.html
Neptune the Chameleon thank you!!!
How hard would it be to care for a panther chameleons humidity requirements in Colorado?
Hmm it should be manageable if you use a hybrid enclosure. The current recommendation for panther chameleons is 50-60% during the day and 70%+ at night.
Great video my first was a male veild chameleon and yea you do grow a strong bond I sure did with my chameleon and very educational and my chameleon is very friendly
Jairo Salas Banda I think they learn to recognize the hand that feeds them 😅
I am first owner of a veil your video have helped me tremendously on getting his cage set up! I have followed a majority of your advice that you recommended. Silly type of question but where did you get your tables to set the cages on? I feel like I need to raise my cage higher off the ground? Thx
You definitely want the enclosure off of the ground! Here is what I use: amzn.to/3Wq1l56
Mine came out of his cage at Petsmart right up my arm and sat on my shoulder and looked at me. Saying "I am yours now!!" Then he came home and no longer wants anything to do with anyone. Very stubborn but one of the neatest animals I have ever owned.
He is a male Veiled and as long as you don't expect interaction and can appreciate them great incredible pets
@@scotttasler7503 is he still alive

Hi what should you buy Hatchling or a juvenile when buying a panther Chameleon
Definitely a juvenile.
Neptune the Chameleon Curious why a juvenile over a hatchling
A juvenile is more established making them more likely to survive, and can eat larger bugs which are easier to come by.
Do you have any breeder reccomendations? There aren’t any near me and I’m not sure If I trust repticon
I wouldn’t buy from an expo. Check out these: www.chameleonforums.com/sponsors/ and read the reviews on the forums before buying.
Voice of Reason 🙌 My first chameleon was an Ambilobe
Queen Gene Great choice 😏😎
@Eden Mendoza Yes exactly. Which will impact their coloration.
Is there any chameleon you can handle without it getting sick from stress
No chameleon species should not be handled often. But if you have proper care, and a chameleon with a good temperament, then they should be able to be handled for short durations (5-10 min).
Question, what thermometer and hygrometer do u have bc I cant find one that has good enough reviews to try
I bought my veiled chameleon from Petco 3 days ago and when i was trying to take it out of the box it decided it didn't want to go into the enclosure it wanted to crawl on me no hissing no puffing and his eyes stayed open! I haven't handled it since but i think i got lucky.
What you thoughts on Brookesia micra, I heard there are much more easy to care than regular big chameleons, is that true. Thanks
@@NeptunetheChameleon would you recommend the repti vines to mix in with natural branches?
I'd stick to natural branches.
i just got a 3 month old chameleon how can i get him use to being pick up

ive had my heart set on getting a veiled chameleon for about 6 years now, finally have the money to build a 4ft tall 3feet wide 2 feet length mesh cage, im buying hibiscus, ficus, pothos, and some yuccas for the plants, and im gonna be kitting out the cage with all the fancy tech lol, i plan on spending around $1000 on the cage and setup alone, i am so excited to finally get it in about 2 weeks!! its going to be a male veiled chameleon
im going to be filling the cage up nearly completely with plants, but enough room for it to actually move around, or bask
That sounds like it’s going to be awesome!!
Love to hear that 💚
Are there any good breeders for veiled or panther chameleons that you recommend?

This may sound dumb and be conditional stuff but I live in Indonesia and was thinking of getting a chameleon as a pet and i always wondered if its a good place for a chameleon to be living in my household
(Ps my love for chameleon started when i found out theres a local chameleon breeder in my city and i visit their place Alot and ever since then i got “poisoned” into liking chameleons)
I'm not familiar enough with Indonesia weather, climate, and resources to be able to say if it would be suitable for chameleons :(
im tryna get one i seen it at the store it was vary small like barely bigger then my finger is it possible to keep them small?
Yes it is possible. But the recommendation is to purchase a chameleon that is a least 3 months old so that they have a higher chance of survival.
What place do you recommend buying a chameleon from?
What kind of chameleon are you interested in?
I got my first chameleon and only chameleon about a month ago its a veiled chameleon
Congrats!!
She just started shedding yesterday
I have a baby panther chameleon and I love your channel! I don't know if I should leave my heat lamp and my UVB lamp on or off at night???
Debbie Mathews Aw thank you! Both lights should be off at night. 12 hours on and 12 hours off.
panther chameleons look cooler to me but i couldn’t find any that i could buy but i did find a veiled chameleon which i also like

What age do you think is good to get a chameleon
ua-cam.com/video/uxOQIEBzkKE/v-deo.html
So yeah so I didn't mean I did make changes on his habitat and I think that's what's making things better for him he's actually exploring it right now he's everywhere he's more active I could see he's opened up his eyes now for really want to thank you because your tips been very helpful like I said I barely got my commander about a week my son was the one with the idea I was not I didn't realize what I was getting into but once I did I was like oh my God they're really hiring maintenance and I got him now I have to you know so I'm trying to make the best safe and healthy habitat for him and you know I'm wishing for the best but thank you very much
You are very welcome and I am wishing you all the best with your new chameleon 🦎
Is it that hard to keep a Jackson because they're my force choice but I'm new in the hobby and I don't want him to die early.

What species are you considering?

Great idea! I always say, if you can't afford the vet bill, you can't afford the pet.
