I got my first chameleon, a 10 month old veiled male a couple weeks ago. His first family was moving and their new landlord found out they had a chameleon (he didn't care about their dog or cat), he told them they couldn't bring him. The family had listed him for free for over three weeks, but they live in a rural area so they had no takers. When we contacted the family they were so grateful that we agreed to keep in contact with them they gave us EVERYTHING they had for him (including a temp gun). I did upgrade his UVB and added more enrichment items to his enclosure, but she had most everything covered. We named him Jupiter, he's my pissy boy, but that attitude just endears me to him even more! He's been an amazing addition to our family! I feel so fortunate to have him in our lives! I hope to give him long, happy life with us!

I've seriously thought about getting a chameleon or other reptile lately. I kept a female veiled chameleon a couple of years ago and I loved her so much. She was one of those rare veiled chameleons that were extremely friendly and It at least felt like she bonded with me super well. She just exploded into blue and colorful greens whenever she saw me and she loved to sit on me and with me as I did schoolwork. She was the sweetest and I loved her so much. Welcome to the channel! I have a lot about chameleons and there is nothing wrong with casually getting up to speed on the latest in husbandry discoveries (there have been a lot - especially with Veileds) while waiting for the perfect window of opportunity to jump back in again. I am glad this was able to bring back some good memories!
I rescued a Juvi pied veiled chameleon from petsmart due to the care they were giving it about 8 months ago. He has grown a TON and im glad to see him a lot happier. Hes a grumpy guy and may not love me but i love him!
What in the world did i just watch!!!??? I had never seen such a well put explanatory video on chameleon education!! You went through everything, congrats!
I’ve been thinking about getting a chameleon for about three months now and people say that you have to Think twice. this video help me a lot, thank you.
Abigail Thompson it is amazing how chameleons are mostly air! And when they want to they suck it all in and hide behind branches! Although they seem to have large shapes they need to be healthy to really be a chameleon. Too much weight in them and they are challenged to move and live like a chameleon should.
Thank you for a very informative look at chameleons as pets. I saw a veiled chameleon in a pet store today, and, of course have seen videos where they appear to be enjoying their human interactions. A big thank you for clearing that up! After watching your video, I decided I'd be miserable with a pet who didn't "like" my attempts at companionship. You saved a chameleon from a miserable life! Your honesty is appreciated.
This is one of the best comments I could get! Finding a pet that matches our needs and expectations is critical to a happy life together! For example, as much as I adore cockatoos, I could never provide the emotional needs they have. They is nothing wrong with me or with cockatoos - we just aren’t a match! I am very happy you were able to learn this before getting the pet!
My first ever chameleon was a Jackson’s, and they’ll forever be my favorite species. I have three Veileds currently, one of them is a piebald. They’re my favorite reptile, but they aren’t for everyone.
I just want to say I appreciate everything you do for the chameleon community. I bought one of your enclosures and now I’m just filling it in with plants so I can put my panther in. He’s going to love it.
This was great! Thanks! If I ever get one, I think the one for me is the female panther chameleon. The one you showed was beautiful! Thanks for spreading that attitude about cage size, them being living beings deserving of care and respect, and that we are caregivers of our pets - everyone should be that way.
This video helped me decide which species was perfect to start with and when i actually went to the Reptile Store, I felt educated enough to purchase all the things my new Veiled needed! He seems to be acclimating quite well to his new enclosure but I'm still worried about his temperature and light schedule. can we get a video about proper lighting and how long to keep the lights on etc. ? Love this channel and I just started listening to the podcast as well!
My girl is a veiled who showed up in my backyard abandoned/lost last year, no owner found. She’s not shy at all and it’s been a huge learning curve learning to care for her and is the most expensive “free” pet I’ve ever heard of. Thousands in parasite meds, blood tests, and everything for her enclosure including mistking and plants (that I had to throw out bc coccidia she came with) but I adore her.
The more I watch your videos the more I am considering getting a Jackson’s Chameleon. Loved watching them in the trees in Hawaii but now that I live in Washington I’m realizing how much I miss them.
This seriously helped me. I have not heard of some of these crucial tips from anyone else; I now have a better understanding on chameleons and I cannot thank you enough.
Excellent video. I have two Veiled males and the older Ziggy is so friendly and hates being in his vivarium and literally runs out onto your arm when you open it. He can still be a grumpy guy though. My younger boy Frodo is a more shy and prefers to be left alone.
Veiled because it was a great shop with lots of knowledgeable staff, a healthy chameleon and because we hadn’t seen this video. Great stuff. Thank you.
Wonderful presentation!! Thank You so much! I'm very happy to comment that I learned a lot today. I currently care for 2 Veiled Chameleons, both rehomed to me at about 2.5 years old. I am looking forward to obtaining my first Panther baby. I'm also looking into the Pygmy and Parsons Chameleons! I find that the Chameleons have interesting behaviors, personalities. Very conducive to meditation which is a big plus for my husband and I! I really do Thank You!
Loved this video. Very informative for newbies. My first cham was a triceros quadricornis female that I stumbled upon in the pet section at a hardware store in Germany many yrs ago. I had her for about 9yrs before she died. She laid a few infertile clutches...she started crawling around on the floor and I placed buckets with dirt all around(she was somewhat free range) and she picked a bucket, laid and moved on. Thanks for the vid, totally cool.
What an excellent informative spirited video! I couldn't be more impressed by this gentlemen and appreciate him spreading proper awareness of how to properly care for a chameleon!!! 👏
My veiled chameleon is super friendly! I’ve had her for not that long and she loves to hang out with us! It’s always nice and bright colors and rarely gets stressed
We were gifted Cami for Christmas. She is a veiled chameleon. I really thought I would absolutely hate having a reptile in my house and I couldn't have been more wrong I absolutely love her!!! She was meant to be for my sons but I feel me and her get along very well as she won't go to them or with them but she comes out willingly to me. She will also let me hold her and walk around the house with her where she seems very uncomfortable with the children. Great video!! Thank you so much for the advice I will be looking for a bigger enclosure for her 😀
I had a friend in college who is now a regular veterinarian with aspirations to be an exotic vet. She kept a chameleon on a fake ficus tree in her dorm for years. She loved that thing and took care of it so well, youd think it was her actual child lol. Resident assistants never caught her because it was camoflauged lol. It was like $500 so she went in 50/50 with her room mate and shared custody, but she loved him so much she bought out her room mates portion of the custody Haha
I've got 2 species of chameleon. I've got a beautiful common Mediterranean chameleon. Very even temperament easy to handle and can be trusted. Also have a male veiled. The polar opposite of what i said in the above.. But stunning to look at. Great information here and I'd look forward to more videos. Thanks chameleon academy!! 🙂
Hello from South Mississippi! I’m a second time chameleon care taker and both times I chose a veiled. I just love how they look with their big crests. I’d also like to thank you for putting it out there that the females shouldn’t be looked at as solely breeders and brought light to the fact that they aren’t as scary as everyone makes them out to be. Before I watched your video I was scared to death of the females because of people saying they get egg bound. And I love love love how you said we aren’t owners but car takers. Very nicely put. You’ve got a new subscriber here!
I'm originally from Kenya and I had a female Jackson's chameleon for 5 years 3months when she sadly passed away. She was a lovely pet whom I kept in our tree right outside our house. She use to turn up for feeding at the same exact time. Thanks for sharing.
Hey there I love your videos. Very informative, i do appreciate your effort. I have just bought a veiled cham. I've had an interest with chameleons since I was just a kid. They are very fascinating creatures. They remind me that the creator is the the most awesome and mysterious giver of life to have made suck a creature.
it's a real complete guide and good interaction... I live in Argentina and I've a enthusiasm for have a Yemen Velled Chameleon or a Panther Chameleon but only problem here is only official enclosure for them is the ReptiBreeze Medium (41x41x76) and not much more...
Sir, that was awesome. Definitley subscribing. The basics for chameleon stewardship is clear. What I mean is," It is all about them, and not so much showing them off to others". Great video.
Beautifully made video! Well organized and your voice is like Nat Geo quality! I enjoyed the video a lot that I watched it two more times and took notes. I am new at this and currently making the transition from aquariums (yes! Another expensive hobby). I was set on getting a veiled since the research plus what you video covers for being an “easy” species. Your video has me now thinking to get a panther cham. My plan is to set up the cage and foliage and let it get established. Once I am happy with the cage, I’ll pursue a male panther from a reputable breather. Again, great video and really learned a lot. Sub’d
I am very glad you enjoyed the video! And your strategy of setting everything up and letting it run a while before introducing your chameleon is perfect. That is just one of the habits learned from your aquarium years that will serve you well into your chameleon years!
For my first chameleon I got a baby panther chameleon from experienced breeder. I got him because I’m a first time chameleon keeper so I would have help if I had any questions. Also it helped doing at least a years research before getting him I’m even still improving and learning he is now 2 years old and doing great!
You're Killin it Bill, thank you for the top notch chameleon info as always man! My first cham is a male veiled I reluctantly purchased from Petco and two months later ordered a male panther from KK. Both are growing like weeds!
Last year I got my first chameleon, he was a wonderful male ambanja panther but sadly he was too agressive for me and sold him to a breeder who really wanted him for a long time due to his exceptional coloration. And after a few months without any cham, today I got myself for Christmas a beautiful pair of yellow crested Jackson's chameleons. They are maybe too tiny but I trusted the breeder and as it is winter I felt confident enough to get them. I hope they do well... I've read (literally) everything available about this species so... Fingers crossed! Thank you so much for your work teaching us in the right way!! Cheers from Spain 🇪🇸
adrian pbarroso That is great to hear! Did you run across the jacksonschameleon.org website? I created this page to be a central hub for Jackson’s Chameleon keepers. I figured we needed a good place to collect our experiences for future keepers!
@@ChameleonAcademy wow, thanks for the info! I'll take a look at it ASAP. I've already noticed something that I didn't expect: they're eating dubia nymphs since the second week of life. Such a big appetite! 😂
Chameleon Academy can I email a pic of my veiled ? Wondering if I have a boy or girl . Store said boy but idk I don’t see the slurs or at least I don’t think I do
Jeremiah, take a look at the Chameleon Academy species profile and see if that helps you identify the gender of your chameleon. If that doesn’t do it then you can find my email in the contacts section and I can give an opinion. Check out this link for Veiled info: chameleonacademy.com/veiled-chameleon-care/
What I get from your presentation with the ivy is that something like a standard greenhouse size would be appropriate for a chameleon. This makes sense from an enrichment perspective, as it gives them a lot of different foliage and vertical space to inhabit. Makes me think that if I want to have a chameleon as a pet, I should probably move to a climate more amenable to their natural needs. Edit: I suspect that having an enclosure and accompanying foliage that are above a human height will help establish comfortability in the chamelon.
I got an vailed chameleon a couple months ago, his name is kiwi and he always gets his tail wrapped around one of his legs and then it gets stuck. I was looking for videos about chameleons to find out stuff I don’t know about them which I should be aware of, then I found this video. It’s amazing! Thanks for the advice!
Jackson Chameleon because I've got to do reasurch because I'm gonna get a baby Male Jackson Chameleon. So thank you so much for making this video know it will help me out alot
Fantastic information for people just looking to get into chameleons. I've owned chameleons for 15 years with a large collection and I'm still leaning daily!
I was thinking of getting a Jackson but once I heard of the mild personality and that chameleons can die from stress I rethought it and went for a panther chameleon. Thank you for the information extremely helpful. I will definitely be getting a panther chameleon for my first chameleon (I have had about 5 reptiles in the past but never a chameleon).
A favorite past time is when I lived in Florida and there were chameleons roaming around the house all the time. And sometimes I liked to just sit in front of the house and wait for a little critter to cross my path so I could pick it up, rub it's chin to relax it and maybe put it to sleep 💤 ..... Then a little while later I woke it up and released it back into the grass. These chameleons were very tiny compared to the ones you have shown here. I also caught salamanders and they were just as fun. ✌️
We have a veiled female. About 6 months old. She is great addition to our pet friendly home. Likes coming out of her cage and run around on the sofa. Very friendly and we've been lucky. Now the husbandry with egg laying was a stressful first time. have a box about 10x10x12 with sand and dirt always in cage ready.
Thank you for a great Video with helpful info.Looking forward to getting a chameleon soon. Please do more Videos !!!!>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Thank you very much for your encouragement! I will probably be more on a once a month schedule as my videos end up being a little longer than usual. But I definitely have some very interesting videos ahead that I am putting together!
You explained very clearly and gave such important details that many over look. I really hope many people find your video before deciding to purchase one.
I definitely agree on researching breeders VERY thoroughly. I was sold a 1 month old baby panther with many health issues (the breeder said he was 3 months old but was born very small). While it was my mistake to accept it without looking further into it, essentially you want someone that has the best interest for the chameleon, not the money
Hello! my name is audrey i am really wanting a chameleon but i have a big problem. i live in anchorage, alaska where tempuratures* arent the best and my house tempurature is kinda low and its very dry here although i do have a humidafier*. i am also 12 am i too young to own a chameleon should i wait? i am going to be vet when im older and i want animal experience. i want to work with reptiles. i own 2 dogs and a parakeet. is that a problem? what chameleon is best for alaska standards? if i get one and cant provide the temps for it and it dies am i a bad person? please answer if it is not a good idea to get one please let me know i dont want to make a chameleon suffer.
Audrey Groat a very active member of the chameleon community lives in Alaska. It is very challenging, but it can be done. The challenge is not just the chameleon, but making sure you have a constant supply of food! Low humidity can be taken care of by humidifiers and glass or solid side cages. Artificial lighting technology is to a point where even the long nights won’t be a problem. But it will definitely be expensive. Just how expensive depends on what kind of environmental conditions your house provides and you would be the best to know that. You might consider working with Pygmy chameleons as they are smaller and it is easier to create a total custom environment for them. You could do the same for the larger chameleons if you have the space and funds to do it on a larger scale. The pygmy chameleons might be a good first step to work out all the things you need to do to make it work. There are many things you will need to take care of to keep chameleons in Anchorage. It really will depend on how much of your time and money you want to devote to making it work. But it can be done!
You should care for more "easy" animal at first, like beardead dragon. I wanted chameleon but they are kinda hard to keep alive and happy. So I bough berdead dragon. I know they don't look like chameleon and they are not that charming but it's good for the start speccialy if this is your first reptile pet.
Panther Chameleon sounds like the one for me. I live in Florida so humidity and temperatures aren’t an issue, and is more mild like me. And I love those colors!
I recently got my first Veiled Chameleon. I was wondering how much I should feed my chameleon. He’s about 1.25 months old. I feed him about 6, 1/4 inch crickets once a day. Is this too much or too little? Thank you!
Feed him as much as he will eat until he is full grown (6-9 months) and then ease off to five food items every other day or even every third day. Obesity is a big problem in veiled chameleons so remember to ease off when adult size!
Mr chameleon Academy I want you to know how much I love your videos and that you were what started my love of chameleons. I’m lucky enough to be an owner of the friendliest female veiled you’d ever have the pleasure of meeting, and it’s all thanks to you. I hope you put out more videos soon. If you’re taking any suggestions I believe it would be a great idea to go in-depth on more chameleon species and which ones are your favorites. Whatever the topic is I’ll love and watch it!
Michael thank you so much for letting me know how much the videos have helped you! It sounds like you hit the jackpot with that sweet veiled girl! Please stick around. There are plans in the works for more videos! And I will be integrating going into different species in depth. It is a great idea!
I had my first chameleon when I was an army brat in Hawaii and it was a Jackson chameleon that my dad help raise and now that I am older I want to accompany one as well but I think I will go with a panther chameleon to start out because the females are beautiful. With that being said will a female be unhappy if she doesn't mate or will she be okay??
Originally I really wanted a Jackson's and I've done some research on them and Panthers but while both could work for me I couldn't really choose, this video definitely helped me choose Panthers in the end, and it was great to learn about the veiled chameleon too! Amazing video!
I can certainly fit an episode on breeding into the line up. Was there anything in particular you were interested in? Are you just researching what you need to do to hatch your first clutch?
@@ChameleonAcademy I would like to know how I could get my female gravit and what i need to do and what to prepare to get my eggs layed and hatched. really like to know your best tips ! :) kind regards

surprised the chamelons you are showing arent reacting to your all black long sleeve shirt. Both of my chameleons would flare up when I would clean the cage with a dark colored shirt or long black socks. Must have thought I was a snake.
Thank you for the great video! Loved to hear that you mentioned: THEY ARE SHY. Cant keep repeating the importance of understanding the animals. They are lizards and of course it is so stressful (Stress-which is one of the biggest danger for chameleons) for them to be tamed, touched... I have a veiled chameleon - he is with me for 3 years, since he was a baby, and he is absolutely not tamed, he gets angry quite easily - naturally, just as it supposed to be - I simply let him be as a chameleon. I LOVE all the lizards and all the spiders living with me, with a DISTANCE so they can be themselves and love is reciprocated on their confidence, letting us observe them as they really are and showing confidence on not hiding all the time under some rocks scared of being touched. Also important that chameleons are used to be prey in the nature, so they must be scared to death from any kind of approach, except if it is a roach ;)

Although they seem to have large shapes they need to be healthy to really be a chameleon. Too much weight in them and they are challenged to move and live like a chameleon should.
Admittedly, I tend to overfeed my animals because it's so fun to watch them eat. Maybe other people are that way too.
@@duybear4023 Its not healthy to do that, even if fun to watch, you can kill them by overfeeding.
@@ChameleonAcademy It really is a wonderful video! I'll probably visit again just so I can enjoy seeing you with your friends. :)
He’s going to love it.
nuclearpeacex I am very glad that this outreach has brought value to both you and your panther chameleon!
This was great! Thanks! If I ever get one, I think the one for me is the female panther chameleon. The one you showed was beautiful! Thanks for spreading that attitude about cage size, them being living beings deserving of care and respect, and that we are caregivers of our pets - everyone should be that way.
So fortunate to be living in South Africa, we've got all sorts of pets walking around here everywhere...
James Stout a proper lighting video is in the works! I am very glad to hear that this video helped so much!
I picked a Jackson for my first because of the horns and mild temperament.
The more I watch your videos the more I am considering getting a Jackson’s Chameleon. Loved watching them in the trees in Hawaii but now that I live in Washington I’m realizing how much I miss them.
I think Washington would have good environmental conditions. You could get that nighttime drop that many of us struggle to provide.
I have a veiled chameleon his name is Rango :D
That's a great name for him! I love that movie
@@real6121 AWW thnx!!!
I have one named Frank, but I also like Rango😄
Mine too my granddaughter named him

This seriously helped me. I have not heard of some of these crucial tips from anyone else; I now have a better understanding on chameleons and I cannot thank you enough.
Excellent video. I have two Veiled males and the older Ziggy is so friendly and hates being in his vivarium and literally runs out onto your arm when you open it. He can still be a grumpy guy though. My younger boy Frodo is a more shy and prefers to be left alone.
Yep, each chameleon has their own personality!
Veiled because it was a great shop with lots of knowledgeable staff, a healthy chameleon and because we hadn’t seen this video. Great stuff. Thank you.
This video helped me a lot on my decision on getting a chameleon😁👍
This is by far the best video of chameleons I’ve seen I hope more people can watch this before getting their chameleons
Chichi C I am glad you enjoyed it!
This showed up on my feed randomly and very pleasant to watch. Very cool to learn about chameleons.
I am glad you enjoyed the video!
Very well-made video. I could watch chameleon videos for hours 💚
I am glad you enjoyed it!
I love your pod casts bill ,they should be mandatory for new keepers I have 7 yemen 7 panthers 1 jacksons an a oustalet amongst my reptiles
I'm originally from Kenya and I had a female Jackson's chameleon for 5 years 3months when she sadly passed away. She was a lovely pet whom I kept in our tree right outside our house. She use to turn up for feeding at the same exact time. Thanks for sharing.
Milele that is exciting! Very cool!
Donald Wilson thank you very much for your encouragement!
Thank God there are half a million views of this. Important info.
This is great to hear! I am glad you have had such a good experience!
You're Killin it Bill, thank you for the top notch chameleon info as always man! My first cham is a male veiled I reluctantly purchased from Petco and two months later ordered a male panther from KK. Both are growing like weeds!
Ben Umbras great to hear that your chameleons are doing so well! Thank you for letting me know you enjoyed the video!
Damn i thought my veiled was underfed by my dude looks just like this glad im doing it right.
Just got my first chameleon last week .
Have always wanted one & couldn’t be more happy !
Can see myself having more then one down the line
Jeremiah Neal I am glad you are enjoying your chameleon keeping so much! And, yes, they are addictive!
This is a really good video all around, very helpful
Jakob Reeder thank you for letting me know you enjoyed the video!
Thank you for such a well put, and informational video, earned a thumbs up and sub
Tabitha Myers I am so glad this video helped you! I admit that Jackson’s Chameleons are my favorite as well :)
I purchased my first juvenile vailed Cham and I would love a long lesson and lots of advice from this guy. Very experienced and informative!
I found this a very informative video
Fantastic information for people just looking to get into chameleons. I've owned chameleons for 15 years with a large collection and I'm still leaning daily!

I was thinking of getting a Jackson but once I heard of the mild personality and that chameleons can die from stress I rethought it and went for a panther chameleon. Thank you for the information extremely helpful. I will definitely be getting a panther chameleon for my first chameleon (I have had about 5 reptiles in the past but never a chameleon).
This video was really helpful! Great channel I subscribed and liked!
Thank you very much!
extremely informative!
richard nosewater thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Started with a panther and just added a veiled. Glad I started with the panther.
Would like a Kenyan Jackson’s if ever they’re available.
I live on Big Island Hawaii in the mountains. Lots of Jacksons around. Now I understand why.
oh man, i loved this video so much, thank you!!!
You explained very clearly and gave such important details that many over look. I really hope many people find your video before deciding to purchase one.
Thanks for °C from Germany 😁👍
I definitely agree on researching breeders VERY thoroughly. I was sold a 1 month old baby panther with many health issues (the breeder said he was 3 months old but was born very small). While it was my mistake to accept it without looking further into it, essentially you want someone that has the best interest for the chameleon, not the money
Fernanda Lira thank you for sharing your experiences. This is a great perspective for those looking for their first chameleon.
Hello! my name is audrey i am really wanting a chameleon but i have a big problem. i live in anchorage, alaska where tempuratures* arent the best and my house tempurature is kinda low and its very dry here although i do have a humidafier*. i am also 12 am i too young to own a chameleon should i wait? i am going to be vet when im older and i want animal experience. i want to work with reptiles. i own 2 dogs and a parakeet. is that a problem? what chameleon is best for alaska standards? if i get one and cant provide the temps for it and it dies am i a bad person? please answer if it is not a good idea to get one please let me know i dont want to make a chameleon suffer.
I do recommend waiting thoughlas chameleons are hard to care for in some ways and it will limit your college search
Very informative; straight to the point. Not a bunch of babel like so many other vids.
I’m thinking about getting a chameleon and I think that the panther chameleon is my best bet
They live 2 years
@@alienmapping3536 A properly cared for panther chameleon will live for five to seven years.

I wasn't even looking for a chameleon, but this video is quite interesting. Awesome info!
A female will be very happy never mating!
@@ChameleonAcademy What a sad and boring life.
How is that sad? They only mate to reproduce, they don't feel pleasure like humans do

I liked 2 min into the vidio, how many of u liked the vidio ?
