I love that you take the entire time to do these videos because then I can do it WITH you. In real time. And you give random piecies of knowledge usually while you're doing something tedious, so it's just bonus! Thank you for the videos, they're awesome!
i have bought SEVERAL templates from Maker's Leather Supply and plan to buy A LOT more in the near future. these templates are amazing and the instruction that can be found here is so in depth and detailed there isnt really a way to fail these projects if you follow these tips and tricks and be careful when using your tools. i have to say Aaron you have my buisness for the foreseeable future :) EXTREMELY HAPPY CUSTOMER HERE
Please don't start fast forwarding. It's so nice to see someone struggling with the same sort of problems that we do. One thing though, strictly speaking it wasn't saddle stitch, it was pass stitching as you didn't loop the thread and make the knot. No rebukes for that though, I find your vids so soothing.
A long video but well worth it. I can really appreciate that you didn't fast forward through the key points of construction. I also appreciate the fact that you are willing to show that even professionals struggle a bit with some of their projects. I'm only just beginning, but this gives me heart to keep going with my new hobby.
It's funny you mentioned the way you hold your rotary cutter cause it was like angels were singing and the lights were shining when I did it that way instead of "how you are supposed to hold it". Great videos.
Well done Aaron, made two yesterday , if you don't use the same size zipper you must adjust or the first sewing will be off. caught it before I sewed my zippers to the body. that helped!
another great video. i purchased this template and cant wait to give it a try. i will be hand sewing the project, so it looks like i might be in for some fun. lol. thank you for another great video
Awesome Bag... Thanks for showing us how to make it... it does seem a bit easier than I first envisioned... but then everything you show here seems easy... lol
Great job, Aaron! I’ve sewn and worked with leather since I was 11 and know it’s difficult to describe step by step directions to folks who don’t sew. Fabric and leather are so different. You have to be able to envision how things flip around and may seem the opposite of what the finished product will actually look like. Awesome!
I ordered this pattern about 2 months ago along with just about every other pattern you have lol. With Christmas, other patterns, and work I'm finally finding time to make this one. I travel for work so I have to wait 8 days till I can make it but it gives me time to watch and get comfortable with the process. Also gives me a reason to stop by Tandy's on the way home from the airport for supplies lol. Excellent video as always. Keep it up.
Made it and came out perfect and better than expected, HOWEVER, I won't make another one like it without a sewing machine :-( Measurements were all good along with your advice, but my hands took a beating hand stitching this. I even used an awl and pliers on the especially thick parts. The plexiglass pattern was great too. Thanks.
FYI if you rub the zipper with graphite(aka pencil lead) it will open smooth it only works on metal zippers not the plastic kind.Great tutorial!Love this shave bag!!!Thanks so much!
This is such a great project. Your templets are awesome. Thank you for taking the time to make and share them. You have an inspirational business and i'm so grateful you've taken the time to make videos to go with them. I own a community craft space and I will be suggesting you and your products to all my members who are getting into leather work. Keep up the amazing work!
Cheers bloke, bought the template from the crew in Hobart just the other day. Got some nice purple croc-embossed kangaroo veg that I'm using it with it. Excellent work with the puzzle concept too!
Recommendation for lining leathers. I've found that HeatnBond Ultrahold works really well and is clean to work with. The only consideration is that it adds some rigidity to the final product.
I do not have a sewing machine and I used a rotary punch for in the inside. Maybe someone already gave this advice, but in case not it made those inside corners super quick! It’s not a perfect stitch line, but it doesn’t have to be if nobody can see it. :)
I love love love this template! Have you even thought about putting sewing/punching holes on the template for people that do not have a machine? That way people can decide if they want to hand sew or machine sew. It would be especially helpful on this pattern in the spot where you did your hand sewing. I cannot get my awl to punch all the layers and so I used a small punch to make the holes to make it easier to line up and sew. Just a thought. Love it and have made several.
Aaron uses a stitch wheel to mark where the stitch holes need to be. Since I can’t guide a stitch wheel in a straight line to save my life I use my pricking irons and press down by hand to mark where I need to punch the holes with my awl. Hope this helps ^^
I have made a few bags from this video using a Consew 206 RB. You make it very easy to follow every step in the bag making. Thanks!! If you were hand stitching, what would you use to punch? Thread?
New to leather work. Like what you have done. What kind of sewing machine and accessories should I buy to work with leather as shown that is tough to sew? Great job
If we don’t yet have them template you said it can still be made without it. But you didn’t say the size of the body piece or what the box corner dimensions are. Can you please post those?
Hello! I am new to your videos. Thank you for your service! I like your Dopp kit! I have known how to sew for all of my life as my Mother owned a sewing factory. I have to hold my rotary cutter differently when cutting leather or HD Military grade fabric. I use that fabric to make tool bags. I also machine embroidery them and set double slide zippers. It is easier to open from the middle to remove long tools. I put my handle just below the seam; and I clip the corners (just a bit) before I turn them. When I sew my sides I lay the seam in the direction that the zipper is already going. I suspect that by now you may be doing the same. By laying the zipper towards the bottom, the outside seam will lay flat. But HEY!!!! You and the puppy did a great job! How else do we learn but from experience?!?!? Thank you so much. Oh, DG Saddlery is a very gifted soul! He makes pattern creation look easy! I have learned from him! I especially like your quilted look tooling and the use of straight lines! Not often are we taught applications for straight lines. Thank you again. Take care. Best to you and yours. Blessings and Re Jouir -Darlene (& Scott)
I didn’t see shrunken bull hide on your website. Do you have a recommendation for a replacement leather (hopefully one I can buy by the square foot - and if so, how many square feet?)
We lost our supplier for the shrunken bullhide. I recommend the Windsor collection, Belfast collection, cowboy, legacy ranch, and especially the pebble grain crazy horse. I like leather with texture more than smooth leathers for this project.
Any tips on getting the fabric not to fray, especially along the zipper? I don't so much care about the other ends but every time I have tried to make this bag, the fabric frays all over the place and gets caught in the zipper. TIA
Hi Aaron! Any suggestions for when the "double sided sticky tape" wont stick to the exterior of the bag (using an Oil Tan Utility Side)? Got the zipper sewn to the strips (sticks to the flesh side), but a total blow out when I tried to add the zipper piece to the body. Ack!
Well, after being a tiny bit more successful with glue, I was watching another video from a friend of your I heard...don’t use oil tan leather because you won’t get the pieces to stick together! LOL! I know what he means now! Anyway, I got it to come out great! Thanks! BTW, the Tandy packaging calls for 1” and your template calls for 3/4” along zipper....
Your rotary cutting is scary. As a seamstress and quilter I was yelling at you to be careful. Love your templates. Made 2 of your billfold wallets and now working on the passport holder. Do you make custom templates for customers?
@@johnarms9680 being a damn man has nothing to do with it. I know many men that can use a rotary cutter right. If a person man or woman doesn't use one every day then it will be used wrong. Hi Rebecca, the wax serves to preserve the thread. When hand stitching you a re pulling all the thread through each hole you go through. If not for the wax you might prematurely fray and wear your thread out. Machines only pull a bit through each hole.

what are the mesurments of your finished bag? mine turned out 11inches long and 4 1/2 wide..seems long to me.thank you
Can you recommend needle size and thread size for this project and other bags on a Cobra Class 26?
I use a size 21 needle with 138 thread. If the leather is a little thicker or more dense, a size 22 needle might be better.
