H.P. Lovecraft and Poe, The greatest horror authors that have blessed the face of this earth. Thank you, for narrating this story. Always a pleasure 'tuning in' to hear your take on my favorite stories.
Otis Jiry's Creepypasta Crypt While she's not as scary as she is weird, Shirley Jackson is just amazing. Her stories are very creepy. Joyce Carol Oats also wrote some horror stories you should look into.
+Otis Jiry I wonder if anyone has thought of doing a reading of Murray Leinster's MAD PLANET? Man on a planet in which insect and vegetal life has grown wild and gigantic. Leinster was a master at describing/making real and visceral all kinds of horrific encounters between man and beast---in this case, the "beast" is the realm of the insect. (However, this may fall far afield of this far more supernaturally-attuned material being posted here.) MAD PLANET, btw, was later expanded into an equally effective book called THE FORGOTTEN PLANET.
This is one of my favorite Lovecraft stories. Dripping with atmosphere and the ending really got me when I first read it. When he nopes it out of the pit suddenly when he sees he managed to dig up only the things ELBOW! how big did this get?!
what an amazing voice n talent for reading! so glad I found this channel. not many people out there among the creepypasta community that are reading any Lovecraft, especially with any talent worthy of his works. thank u for being there n making these videos!
Otis is one of the best story tellers there is. I love his voice an how he adds detail's that just improve the story, where so many try it an fail miserably. Thank you Otis Jiry you make my week. From FrancesMarie in Ireland 🇮🇪. 💚💚🍀🍀💀😈👀⏳☠👏👏👏 I forgot 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 for Otis an his story.
Excellent job. This is one of Lovecraft's best, most carefully developed and written tales. He builds believability into his story by that classic means, namely the slow accretion of minute histories and physical, even seemingly prosaic details, so that the increasing extremes of events feel real and true, in spite of being pure fantasy. The descriptive passages detailing the eerie phenomena in the cellar rival the same sort of elements in one of H.P.L.'s other truly masterful pieces, THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE, all of which creates that atmosphere of "documentary" so vital to the creation of successful weird-tale effects. And this is a really wonderful, precisely-tuned reading of the material on top of that!
I want to start by saying that you were one of the first voices that drew me in to the horror podcasting scene. I believe it was the story about the camp counselors who ended up being not so nice haha. Since then I've delved into ctfdn, no sleep, and horror hill and whatever comes up on my feed! Haha so thanks for all the amazing work you do!! Also, the cartoon icon with the hood makes you look like you are a member of the akatski haha
Lovecraft the greatest horror author since Edgar Allan Poe. The creativity of his lore and the complexity of Lovecraft's diction makes his work deserving of such an influential legacy
just subscribed! I've added a bunch of your videos to my Lovecraft playlist, n listened to a couple of them already. I didn't realize I hadn't subscribed yet.
Thank you so much for this fabulous narration! I have always been fond of this short by Lovecraft. Somehow, I feel a bit of sympathy for the poor unknowable being. The description of the nightmare always makes me think that it is just as confused as its victims... possibly it is desperately trying to reach out for help, but in doing so it harms and terrorizes those it petitions. In many ways, this feels like a forerunner for The Color out of Space, which Lovecraft penned 3 years later, though it subverts the Color, as this spectral vampire is somewhat understandable. I adore the way the narrator of the tale frames his willingness to observe the supernatural, seeing it as possibly real phenomena that is unquantifiable by modern techniques, but with a wealth of unreliable accounts -- one does not need to claim a blanket belief in the full mythology of vampires to imagine that there may be a real basis to the myths. It reminds me of how people scoffed at the concept of germ theory even into the early 1900s -- even educated doctors found the idea of invisible animals that could sneek into people and cause illness preposterous, and so thought that the washing of hands prior to things like surgery or childbirth was unnecessary. Now we take these basic sanitary habits for granted, especially as we have such powerful microscopes to confirm the existence of bacterial, viral, and other microscopic parasites and excellent system of disseminating information so that the general public can be assured of their being a real thing. This kind of initial doubt is so common with any cutting edge or 'fringe' science. It can be very difficult to try to blaze a new field. Science teaches that one cannot deny the existence of anything absolutely, all we take for 'fact' must constantly be reevaluated based on new evidence that has been discovered and rigorously checked. It is a battle of bias, ego, and social pressure that generally bars open-minded scientists from pursuing scientific reasons behind the 'supernatural' in the modern age.
Guardian Beast Um, the narrative strongly implied what we saw was actually the eldritch wizard from the historical records, grossly changed by ritual and bodily death into a vampiric being. Indeed, there's a reason the narrator focused on "a titan elbow," for the once-human thing had grown massive and fat by sucking the life out of all the hapless tenants. There's really no way to put a sympathetic lens on the horror as "confused and inadvertently hurting people as it reached out for help." Speaking of which, who reaches out to _a baby_ for help? For several decades? Killing them every time?
Otis, I hope you know how awesome you are! You are, without a doubt, the best narrator I have ever heard. You remind me a little bit of Morgan Freeman:) After hearing your narration, how could I ever let anyone else read me a story? Thank you for hours of blissful story telling:)
krissynurse Thank you for the kind words. Bless you. If you're in a position to do so, have a look at the Members Area at Chilling Tales For Dark Nights where you can subscribe to have access to all my work, plus other narrators and music and movie productions that you can download. Doing so will move me to my goal of doing narrations full time.
James Omahony Hi James. Thank you for the suggestion, however The Shadow Over Innsmouth, would work out to be just over three hours in length, which much too long for the scope of this channel. Perhaps in the future, we could look at cutting it up into several parts. Bless you.
This is great. There’s another reading of this story on UA-cam where the guy sounds like a sleepy William shatner, anyone else not able to get through that one and found this?
LOL Ummm no. I once accidentally uploaded the wrong file which was a working file, and it became known as the 'pickup' version. People actually enjoyed it judging by the comments. When I record, and I make a mistake, I say pickup, then proceed to repeat the line and keep going. Well, everyone who listened enjoyed the 'pickup' reference and got an understanding of what actually goes on when recording. When you listen to the final product, keep in mind usually it takes about 5 times as long to do the recording from start to finish. Aside from the voicing, you need to remove the errors, clean up the mouth noises, equalize the file,do various types of processing, then convert to the proper format and most important do a quality control listen for any reading mistakes such as mispronunciations, missed words, etc.
+Otis Jiry Wow - all right, now I know you're not actually a supernatural being. Lovecraft's writing must be a huge challenge even for a narrator of your caliber, and you read it so gracefully and naturally that if you were doing these all in one shot I'd suspect you'd sold your soul to the devil. It's just that I've heard narrators repeat lines they flubbed and it made me wonder whether they were doing any editing or just trying to get it all down in a single take. Even so, sir, I have never detected a "seam" in one of your pieces. Bravissimo and rock on.
Brilliant man! Have been following you for a while now with the creepy pasta shorts and especially fond of the lovecraft readings. Pickman's model was my favourite until I was reminded of this wee beauty. Lurking fear was awesome as well. You got the feel perfectly! (Anyhoo enough gushing) have you thought about a shadow over innsmouth to keep the lovecraft train rolling? I think it's a story your particular style of narrating would be perfect for. At any rate Keep up the good work and have merry xmas :-)
After seeing how many Lovecraft inspired parts there are in games like Fallout, thought I'd finally check out the source material. I see why they picked Lovecraft, this stuff is spooky.
This was amazing Mr.Otis....although I did have a problem staying awake, NOT bcuzz it was boring.....quite the opposite......but due to the mixture of my choice to put in my headphones and settle in under the covers while enjoying, and how relaxing your voice is....almost as if it was designed for the sole purpose of storytelling 😉😉😉😉. I had to go bck about 1/2way thru and start over but this was an awesome story and great narration👍👍👍😉😉
Am I the only person who thinks his voice is banal and 'just like any other American's? Is this something that is lost in translation, like ... are all you guys who jerk off to this guys voice yankees or something? I'm not American, I am a native English speaker though, but generally I find his voice quite jarring. So for me seeing everyone being all fapfapfapomgjizzjizzjizz all I keep thinking is "These guys are fucking weird, and fucking gay."
Well John, keep in mind the vast majority of my viewers are American Not English. Most Americans find English narrators pompous. So it depends on your cuppa team. If you look at the thumbs up/down index my historical rating over 300 videos is at approximately 96% thumbs up with close to 3 million views. You'll never please everybody, but I am pleasing the vast majority. As for the 'fucking gay' comment. I think you may have 'issues'.
As hard as it is to transfer written word to cellulite I wait for the day a visionary director turns a Lovecraft story into a film Worthy of the author. Mr. Del Toro I'm talking to you.
Lovecraft's stories are so hard for me to follow being a non native English speaker XD Still, I cannot stay away from them because they are amazing. Even more so with this great narration.

+Mike Y Because this is a straight audiobook style channel of my narrations. I do other narrations on Chilling Tales For Dark Nights which has music and sfx, but here is for straight reads only. Hm. True. Some people have their sound effects too loud and can barely here them. In my opinion, I believe that music and sound effects add in to the tension and imagination.
All these modern day CP writers, writing about run-of-the-mill bullied victim turning "EAVUL" should really read up on the real master of horror.... "bleah! Tikkitoby took a knife" Jesus!

+RSEFX Thank you, RSEFX. I do my best. We are big fans of H.P.'s prose over here at ua-cam.com/users/chillingtaleswi.
+RSEFX Well-said! You've encapsulated the most powerful aspect of HPL's writing in the space of a youtube comment - no mean feat.
This is a top-notch review.

yes! and M.R James
This was the first Lovecraft story I read, roughly around New Year's 2016. My sister and I alternated between long passages to narrate together.
Brilliantly read with really good annotation and register.
I love a nice long story . It's time to crack open a can and sip that sweet nectar , While I listen to Otis
this is great and the way I fall asleep. thank you Master Otis JIry. 👍👍👍❗❗❗ I suport all your work

Ah okay! Fair enough :)
+Otis Jiry you seem like a humble cool man " thats my style"
excellent once past the unnecessarily idiotic intro
