Very informative video. There was one issue, though. You mentioned to mark the dull edges with a sharpie marker & when you have 4 marked sides we will know that it's time to order a new cutter. As a former military man, I was taught to always be prepared. Therefore, I suggest that when we have 3 dull sides it's time to order a new one. What do you think ?
This is all new to me so forgive my newb question… I have the Savannah 3 piece mini carbide kit bought from Amazon. Which negative rake cutters would fit those tools? I’ve been turning acrylic and while I am getting the hang of it, anything to make it even easier would be awesome. Thnx for any insight.
This sounds like just the ticket I need for my acrylic blanks. The catalog list two cutters I am interested in: Ci1 Rake R2 (2") and the CiR2 (2") Radius Negative Rake Carbide cutters. What is the difference between the two? Also I have one Easy Tools 4200 Full size handle and several Magic Pen Genie handles from Penn State. Will any of those work with the cutters I mentioned? If not, what would be a good handle(s) to purchase? Thanks in advance! John
Probably more of a pain than it is worth. The trick would be holding the beveled edge to the grinder consistently, which would probably require a custom jig. Even then you would be sharpening a corner at a time and getting an even grind would be very difficult. Let us know if you come up with something!

Carbide tools hold their edge a really long time, but like any edge it depends on what you are cutting and how much you are using it. It will definitely last much longer than a high-speed steel cutter.
That's a great question. The answer is no, because the negative rake bevel angle is on a different plane than the base of the tool. This creates a less aggressive "neutral" scrape that cannot be achieved by simply raising a traditional cutter 20 degrees.
@@CraftSuppliesUSA hmm I guess I don't know enough about woodworking angles to converse further... I figure it'd be the same as changing an angle on a plane blade for figured wood. Angles are angles? But thanks for answering
@@CraftSuppliesUSAthat sounds like a lie. By raising the tool to the point where the cutting edge is at the same angle in relation to the work piece, then you're getting the same type of cut. Obviously saying that won't sell more inserts, but you know as well as the rest of use that you can create a negative rake by the tool angle, it just takes more awareness.
Enjoy the video and give it a thumbs up!
Great video Mike! It was awesome to meet you this past week!
I was tired of sanding my rings with 80 grit 😂 awesome stuff hopefully they work
Nice video! I need to add some negative rake cutters to my christmas list.
Better send em next day air :)
I ordered myself a set of these tips today ;)
Thank you very much, what is the model of your wood gouge for making pens? Or the length?

Good call :)
Video mentioned that it cuts tough materials easily. How does it do a soft and medium materials?

OK. So, even though it's more difficult, just how would you sharpen them?
I was wondering the same
I have the AXE carbide tools will the negative rake carbide cutters work on these tools?
Yeah, they fit the axe tools.
Yes they’ll fit

John
The Ci0 Negative Rake cutter fits the easy wood tools 4200, and for the pen genie you would use the Ci2R2 negative rake cutter.
Cool! I will be ordering them along with the round version. Thanks for the rapid reply!
Thank you @aventador832. All the info is correct.
Here’s a link to all the negative rake cutters we currently offer www.woodturnerscatalog.com/t/131/Carbide-Insert-Turning-Tools?st=Easy-Wood-Cutters
So by "cannot be easily sharpened," does that mean you can't, or it's just a pain?

wow
How long do carbide tools last?
Carbide tools hold their edge a really long time, but like any edge it depends on what you are cutting and how much you are using it. It will definitely last much longer than a high-speed steel cutter.
Come up with a way to resharpen them and I will buy one for each of my easy wood tools.
We'll let you know if we find a sharpening solution.
I'm thinking a dremel set up on a mini lathe would work.
Couldnt we just change the angle we cut on normal carbide cutters? Just lower 20'?
That's a great question. The answer is no, because the negative rake bevel angle is on a different plane than the base of the tool. This creates a less aggressive "neutral" scrape that cannot be achieved by simply raising a traditional cutter 20 degrees.

Pourquoi un titre en français?
Parce que nous avons pensé qu'il serait utile
Same effect if you drop the tool rest 1/4 inch from center.
COMPLAINT: IT IS VERY HARD TO PICK OUT THE RIGHT SIZE CUTTER. PLEASE GO TO A COLOR CODE.
