    DIY Smart Home Guy creates how-to videos for smart home automation centered around Z-Wave and Zigbee devices. Review videos are generally centered around Hubitat Elevation, SmartThings and Vera. I personally run Hubitat as my primary smart hub, however I do test products on the hubs mentioned. I understand that a home automation hub is not a path for everyone. I chose this path because I am a firm believer is advanced automation and local control.

    I love how you included the mistakes you made. One, it makes it less harsh on us who makes mistakes or projects that take longer than what it seems like a lot of professional channels get the first time. Two, it also helps to learn if we were like “why couldn’t you have done ___”, and save us time from doing that way.

    I’ve not had much luck with soderless connectors connecting to the LED strip, though the connectors you used for the cables is a great idea! In my experience, the connection ends up not working well after a while and the lights start flickering. I find that soldering the cables directly provides better long-term results, though it takes more time to setup and requires some soldering skills…

    • @DIYSmartHomeGuy1
      @DIYSmartHomeGuy1  Рік тому +5

      I was a little doubtful, but so far they have worked perfectly. I figure as long as they don’t get bumped there is no reason they should stop working. Soldering is definitely ideal but, above my pay grade.

    Thanks for the video, couldn't have done it without watching it. I just completed installing the lights under the cabinets. I did 5 short runs, totaling about 28 ft of RGBW strips with a wt5 controller and a 24v 15a 360w power supply. Now I want to the same for the top of the cabinets. Would I need a separate controller and power supply? I would need to do 2 runs of 16ft RGBW strips. Thanks for any help.

    • @DIYSmartHomeGuy1
      @DIYSmartHomeGuy1  Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much! It depends on the power draw of the led strips if you’ll need a larger power supply and/or controller. My guess is that you have a large enough power supply but you might need another controller. And personally I would recommend a second controller for the top of the cabinets so you can turn the top and bottom lights on or off individually. Let me know the specs of your LED and I can give you better information hope that helps

      @brentjohnson6654 if you hard wired the lights and used micro switches in the doors to turn them on, it would probably be a lot cheaper than using contact sensors or something else that communicated with a hub. But those would offer some additional options like notifying you when someone is sneaking into the liquor cabinet.

    Great video and instructions, thanks for sharing.
    To be constructive, the power bar setup in the closet is a mess but that's perfectly fine because it can be covered with a box. BUT....
    The wiring harness and excess wires at 12:26 under the cabinet is pretty bad, can you not make those connections above the cabinets and have a drop come down to the light?
    I understand you can make a box under the cabinet as well, but it would cast shadows being so close to the light and it would also stick out, all of that needs to be hidden for a clean look.
    Again, great video and instructions, just that was the only criticism of this project.

    • @DIYSmartHomeGuy1
      @DIYSmartHomeGuy1  2 місяці тому

      Yes, you could have all of the wires/harnesses connect at the top and run the wires down. Based on the timing of installing the cabinets/backsplash there and being a procrastinator I kind of had to rush getting the wires pulled. Could have maybe thought that through a little more.

    New DIYer here - could you explain the reason why you have to connect the 18/6 wire from the controller to another 18/6 via wire nuts instead of just directly connecting that wire to the solderless connector / LED strip?

    • @DIYSmartHomeGuy1
      @DIYSmartHomeGuy1  3 місяці тому

      Yep. The reason is that I ran multiple wire to the different strips. So instead of connecting them all together in the controller, I connect them together first with a wire connector, then run a single wire from that to the controller. Hope that helps.

    • @JoonbiTCG
      @JoonbiTCG 3 місяці тому

      If there’s an 18/6 coming from the controller, wouldn’t those be the only wires that need to be connected to the LED strip? Correct me if I’m wrong, but it looks like you’re extending the LED strip with an 18/6 wire and using that extension to wire nut the 18/6 coming from the controller. Would it be feasible to just run the 18/6 from the controller directly into the LED solderless connector?

    • @DIYSmartHomeGuy1
      @DIYSmartHomeGuy1  27 днів тому

Hardwiring the power for LEDs is an option, but you'd still need controllers for the lights and because I wanted all of the top lights to work together, all of the middle lights to work together and all of the toe lights to work together, they needed to be wired together anyway. So this seemed like the best option.

      You don't have to use a hue bridge. As zigbee controllers they can connect directly to your zigbee hub. I like using the hue bridge because I have multiple hubs I use for testing and whatnot and the bridge allows me to connect them to all of the hubs at once. With a direct zigbee connection you can only connect to one zigbee hub at a time.

    I had a small facelift done to our kitchen. There used to be some low voltage lighting under the cabinet, but it got lost in the reno. The black/red low voltage wire that runs from the light switch to under the cabinet is still there. Can I use wire nuts or something similar to directly hardwire a 12v led strip without a small controller or transformer? Just a basic strip that doesn't change colors or dims. The LED strip I'm looking at already has the red/black wires so no soldering would be needed. Do I need to have a ballast for something this simple and low volt, the length of the run is 84".

    You are an inspiration. I've watched your video several times now. I am building a pantry with overhead glass cabinets over a countertop. I wanted to have two sets of lights. One is under the cabinets to light the countertop, and the other one is running in the overhead cabinets to light up what's inside. I assume I will need two controllers for this. As I do not have a smart home hub, can I control the lights another way or should I break down and buy a smart home hub. Also - How long did your installation take from start to finish?

      Thank you! If you buy the WiFi controllers instead of the zigbee ones you can control the lights with the app instead of using a hub. But I loathe WiFi and would recommend getting a hub. Hard to say how long this project took because we were in the middle of a kitchen remodel so it was very start and stop. But a normal human should be able to bang this out in a weekend.

I have tested one of the LED lights on the wheel using the Zigbee controller and everything is working properly. Since I'm installing the kitchen cabinets myself, I've been able to tweak the layout to accommodate the wiring. Great video, but I need some clarification. @1149ish, you show your Clark Griswold masterpiece. I understand why theres 3 wires running to the left... they feed that side of the kitchen (top, middle & lower). But why is there only 5 running on the right? Shouldn't there either be 6 or 3? Can you explain your wires ( what's going where and why kinda thing)? Thanks for the help!

    • @DIYSmartHomeGuy1
      @DIYSmartHomeGuy1  2 місяці тому

      Good question. The reason there are 5 cables running to the left is that the upper cabinet on that is split into two cabinets on that side so I ran a top and bottom cable to each of those cabinets (4 cables). The toe kick, however, is more or less continuous so I only ran one cable to the toes kick light on that side for a total of 5 cables. Make sense?

      So at 1310 you show the upper cabinet... there's 2 holes on either end with cable coming out. Can you explain what's going on here. I initially thought (and still do) that your LEDs are in parallel (expect you toe kick - that seems like it's in series). But if their in parallel why the extra hole? That makes me think their in series.

    How did you size the number of transformers and controllers needed?

    • @DIYSmartHomeGuy1
      @DIYSmartHomeGuy1  2 місяці тому

      The number of controllers is set by the number of separately controlled zones you want. If I wanted the colors/dim level of all of the strips the same I could have used a single controller. To determine the number of power supplies you need, you’ll have to figure out how many watts your lightstrip draws. The specs should tell you how many watts the strip requires; if you’re not using an entire strip, divide the total wattage by the length of the strip to determine how many watts per foot it uses. Then multiply that by how many feet you are using and you’ll have the total wattage you need.

    • @DIYSmartHomeGuy1
      @DIYSmartHomeGuy1  2 місяці тому

      Yes, you could use a single controller for all of the strips. You could use a single power supply as well, but you’ll probably have to find one with more wattage to light all of the strips.

    I'm about to start a project using your video as a guide. (lighting some very dark garage cabinets) Out of curiosity, how many LEDs were you able to power from one of these power bricks? I think ideally I will be running about 1.2 16.4ft spindles of the LEDs. (20% more than one spindle) I could live with shorter runs if I have to. (more wire/less LEDs) But, if there is some evidence that there is some headroom on the power brick, I wouldn't mind buying another spindle of the LEDs if I'm not going to overload it. Did you ever use more than 16.4ft on one of your runs?

      @DIYSmartHomeGuy1  Рік тому

      LEDs are holding up great! For the toe kick, yes, I ran the wires down along the inside of the pantry and through the wall to the toe kick. The biggest hurdle is making the jump around the sink for the upper cabinets. If you already have a backsplash in I would probably drill up into the cabinet and run the wire all the way up to the top and into the wall through there. It’s a lot of extra wire, but you should be able to hide it well doing it that way.
